Three strikes and you're out, that's my policy.
I downloaded and began playing TSoR four days ago...I gave it the boot and uninstalled it last night.
First let me praise Nevrax for having the most realistic fire that I've ever seen in a MMOPG.
Now for the strikes against...
1) Character creation is a pathetic joke in TSoR...hehe, one of the tattoo choices was purple fish scales on your characters cheeks!
2) Forced grouping to complete silly, ill-conceived missions...on the other hand, some of the missions that I soloed were so tedious that I actually had to take little breaks to grind for xp just to keep from getting disgusted! (I completed all the missions for all four classes.)
3) I had to call upon their customer service department three times in as many days! The last incident (couldn't log on) prompted me to go ahead and uninstall the game and delete the folder.
Thank god most of these games have free trials!

I sleep with a pillow under my gun.
What does that have to do with anything? And if I remember correctly, SoR is a French made game.
I think SoR is a great game, very well put together. But, just because I think the game is great doesn't mean it's my kind of game. I don't like the game itself, but I can respect the ideas it uses and

Then, whilst waiting around for the "content patch", they made it nigh impossible to do anything without a group. That was pretty much it for me.
I see it has a pretty high rating here now, but by the comments it doesn't seem much has changed. Shame, because it was a pretty good looking game with some good ideas.
1. Character customization comes in two areas: aesthetics (appearance, etc), and game mechanics (skills, professions, etc). Ryzom, I will agree, gives a fairly poor accountingo n the aesthetics (the variety is not great, and as a result most matis women I know look like clones of each other etc). However, Ryzom also allows a tremendous amount of freedom in the skills area, and there are no two characters who are alike in terms of game stats. I am willing to accept the lack of aesthetic variation in exchange for awesome mechanical customization (skills, weapon choice, etc).
2. Grouping is not forced in Ryzom. If you think that, then you simply misapprehended. Now, on the trial island, because that island is a tutorial, yes, there are some quests where you need to group -- more as a matter of practicality than anything else (a couple of the bosses are just not soloable with the equipment and at your level, on the trial island). That is because it is trying to teach you the game, which includes grouping as part of its elements. But once you get to the mainland grouping is never forced. Remember there are 4 basic activities in Ryzom -- Fighting, Magic, Crafting, and Foraging. Crafting can pretty much only be soloed. Foraging is most often soloed, though people do sometimes get harvesting groups together. That's 50% of the game right there, even if combat were not soloable.
But combat is soloable. I know this because I soloed most of my levels from 51-100 on the mainland. So I don't know what you're talking about in terms of it "not being soloable." I am in a guild and I prefer to group, but I also flat out refuse to play games that are not soloable, because often I am in the mood to just play the game for a bit and solo, and if it won't let me do that when I am in the mood, then I agree, I am not interested. So I agree with you about not liking forced grouping, but you're flat out incorrect that Ryzom forces grouping.
3. CSRs have always been fantastic to me, and I have never had any major bugs with Ryzom, so I can't really speak to your experience other than to say, it is pretty darn unusual. Ryzom usually gets highest marks in the CSR area.

I've talked to a number of people who told me that once you reach the mainland the content gets really thin, almost nonexistent...which is yet another pitfall of the sandbox games.
I'm glad you're happy with TSoR...I often wish I could be so easy to please, instead of being so demanding.
1. ONE of the tattoo choices is fishscales that's actually pretty diverse don't you think and part of the character culture. The facial customisation is actually pretty good. Character creation isn't a big deal because you customise further in game in terms of armour, skills etc, there are also additional tattoo and hairstyle plans on the mainland.
2. There isn't forced grouping. I soloed a skill to 150 pretty easily before catalyser crystals came in and another to 220 after. Speaking of missions seems like you were still on the island. The group missions on the island you don't actually HAVE to team for but they recommend it since they're tutorials and want to help teach you teaming. Why play an MMO alone anyway?
3. So you had a few problems and were unlucky. They helped you all three times, right? And pretty quickly too usually.
Just seems like you're a grumpy cuss who didn't get it to me.

There's no forced grouping and Ryzom does a few different interesting things.
* Skill customisation through the Stanza system.
* Ryzom Ring - create your own instances/quests/areas - endless content.
And others.

1. There aren't any classes.
2. Completing all the missions for each skill area gives you.. what? Level 20-30 in each area? (Craft/Forage/Fight/Magic?) There are 250 levels in each skill area and each skill subdivides many times. Characters become invidualised through the specialisation choices you make further up the skill tree.
3. Encyclopaedia missions also allow for some customisation and individuality depending which ones you've taken.
4. Yes, the game is not quest oriented, the island is just a tutorial. There are encyclopaedia missions, outposts, player events, roleplay, live events and Ryzom Ring for content though. You get out what you put into the game, it isn't served up to you on a platter.
Its a strength of Sandbox game that they don't put you on a meaningless quest railroad.

It sounds like you just aren't a fan of sandbox style games. Fair enough but your beating Ryzom up on those elements like they are flat out wrong instead of just not being the approach you like because all those 'pitfalls' are either things I just won't play a game unless they have (skills instead of classes) or I just don't notice as lacking in Ryzom or other sandboxes (content).
Again it's fine you don't enjoy or like Ryzom but others liking it has nothing to do with not being demanding in what they like from a game and everything to do with personal taste.
It's better be hated for who you are, than loved for who you aren't.
I agree, I won't play games that force teaming but in Ryzom there was only two missions I needed a team for. One because it was the tutorial mission and you had to team although right after teaming I did the rest myself and the second was the very last boss fight on the starter island and even there I only needed one other teammate. The rest I soloed and your able to solo on the mainland too, it isn't as fast as teaming but then thats the way in most MMOs and doesn't bother me.
Ryzom is a game that will not hold your hand the entire way, period. For those that need to be told what to do, when to do it, what gear to have, where to go and how to act, this game is not for you. Ryzom has always been and always will be about the freedom of exploring and expanding your character in the way you see fit, not how the game wants you to be. For some, that's just to open and lacks structure, for others, it's exactly that they need to enjoy themselves in a world like what Ryzom hands you.
No it's not for everyone but it works and it works beautifully.
I did find that the personalization on the outset of Ryzom to be lacking but once you move into the game, it's decent. There's more hair, face, tattoo options to buy in the main towns on the mainland to get even more unique and they are easy to find. Clothing and Armor is a little redundant but otherwise there's quite a bit of selection to choose from, any race can choose any other races armor selection. I can how someone would think this on the newbie island but honestly, anyone with actual experience play the game would know this, simply a matter of not playing the game through. It is by far, not a pathetic joke.
And c'mon now, forced grouping? Even on the newbie island it's easy to complete almost every task given to you on your own and on the main land there's tons to do solo. As someone mentioned also, you can easily solo your way through the level's if that's what you want. But the better question is... with a community that is so solid and so good, why in the world would you want to stay away from them?
As for customer service, sorry your experience confuses me. I had one issue the first time I tried Ryzom a couple of years ago, the CSR responded within 30 minutes with a solution, a ticket and 2 days later I was sent an email telling me what the problem had been and how it was going to be fixed in an upcomming patch. Now that is service. It's a shame you couldn't log in and that would certainly make me question whether I would want to play the game but let's make this out to be a routine thing, very rarely does Nevrax get much negative feedback on the performance of the game or of their CS.

There's no reason to attack me personally...I've noticed that you make personal attacks on anyone who has an issue with whatever game you happen to be playing; I guess you think that other people don't have the right to take issue with a game that you like...that's pretty pathetic and sad at the same time!
A few months ago I would have verbally pistol-whipped you right here in front of everyone...but I've learned that that's what people like you want...so that you can run crying to the mods who will, in turn, take away one of my stars and/or slap me with a temp ban.
Developers and publishers alike need to be lit upon and mercilessly "encouraged" to make better games. Period.
I will always bring these kinds of things to the attention of my fellow gamers...they can make up their own mind about the matter.
Ill informed and erroneous criticism annoys me. That's all. So help me.
Your better game is a worse game for a lot of people. There's no 'universal good'.

Then attack the criticism, there's no reason to attack the poster.
I rarely agree with the OP on most of his posts but regardless, if I choose to respond then I try to do so respectfully because he very rarely treats anyone poorly on these forums. He has a right to his points of view, so do I and so do you, but is it not better that we dissagree with each other based on our oppinions then on the oppinion of the poster.
Besides, attacking the person only desolves the conversation to a kindergarden level and if that's what little faith you had in your point to begin with, how do you expect anyone else to take it as any more then a rant?
Just my 2 copper.

The best Customer Service is the one that's never needed! I've played games that never gave me one single problem the entire time I played...EVE Online and Space Cowboy are two off the top of my head. After the gut wrenching experience that I had with Anarchy Online I won't hesitate to point out poor game performance...no matter how small an issue it might seem. CSR lost me as a customer...it's not the end of the world.
I've got Tabula Rasa and The Chronicals of Spellborn to look forward to.
I'm glad you like SoR. Have fun.
Go figure, I don't even play SoR anymore... :P
I do agree though, the fact that more styles can be bought later should be mentioned somehow earlier on in the game, I know it took me quite some time to figure out while I was playing.
Completely agree with the CS comment.
And yes !!! TCoS, I'm pitting alot of faith in this title, well as much faith as I can have in any pre-release title at this point. I'll be there with bells on though.

You'll be playing TCoS?...that's good news!
I fell in love with the "storybook" style of that game right from the start! It really seems to be a rock-solid game. Actually, TCoS will be my first Fantasy type game...I've always strictly been a Sci-Fi guy in the past but...
Yup I can't wait for it. I really, truly feel that TCoS is going to be one of those sleeper hits that the industry hasn't had in a long while. The hype on it as it is remains subdued and I see that as nothing but good.
I also love the fact that it's a game that revolves around a story and not a story that revolves around a game, I love the fact that you'll be able to go back in time (and sometimes forward) to change (in real time) actual game play elements. I love that people will affec the world and not just be part of some sort linear arena that really never does anything and I love the styling of the game, the Fable meets High Fantasy thing really appeals to me.
Everything from shard conquests to live events, I think this is going to be a real blast and the developers are top notch and putting some serious time and thought into fun factor and role play, which I feel the industry sorely, sorely needs right now.
The nice thing too is that I really don't think of TCoS as a pure fantasy game, sure it has those aspects but it has lots of sci-fi and dramatic tones which again, is a nice to see come around.
