The other day I was looking for mmorpgs to play and came across some free servers for games that I have played in the past. Is playing on free servers that people have created for games that have a monthly fee illegal even if you bought the game?

Technically, yes. Will you be prosecuted for playing in a free server? No chance in hell.
The legalities behind private servers are shaky at best.
well, heres the thing. Private servers, what you are refering to, are NOT THE REAL GAME. They are mostly buggy, virus-ridden and make the experience very difference from the real game. They pretty much take the challenge away by giving you, say, 30x gold of EXP off mobs.
Youre better off fessing up $15 a month than putting you computers state at risk.
I have yet to find a single private server that has not tinkered with the game or the experience gain. I personally hate leveling faster than I should or be given access to teleporters so I generally stay away from those games. The only private server I really ever enjoyed was an EQ one callled....."Shards of Delaya" or something like that mainly because the exp gain was alot similar to EQ's.

There are a lot of Ultima Online freeservers, mostly because I don't believe they can be easily shut down. You are only bound by the UO ToS, if you play on the official servers.
UO free servers are far better than the official servers, in my opinion. They bring back the old game and many experience considerably less lag than the official servers.
I've never played on anything else that wasn't official, but then I don't play too many mmorpgs anymore.
The modern MMORPG is simply not worthy, of the acronym RPG. The straight grind and lack of atmosphere leave me with no choice. From this day forth, World of Warcraft, Everquest 2, and all the games like them shall be referred to as PIGCRAP. People In Guilds Constantly Raiding And Power-leveling
