I played Wow for a while myself, up to level 30 with a Taurin Shammy. And the one thing that struck me...was the grind. Its all grinding in WoW, from grinding monsters to find that rare item, from grinding through quests that usally involve grinding against monster. And, the PvP system isnt all that great either, Ive seen a better PvP system on DAOC, EVE, Star Wars Galaxies and even Everquest 2 has better PvP arrangements.

I know that WoW has been made to appeal to a wider audience, and the reason it is so popular is because it has attracted people that wouldnt normally play computer games/MMOs, but they could have put a little complexity and some more variety in ti. Crafting is basic....it just hasnt got anything to get your teeth into.

Well, thats just one person opinion, Im sure that I will get slated for this, but let me know if you agree or disagree with me.

It's hard to believe MMO's weren't all that common in 1997. Now, closing 2006, we have a multitude of choices in online games. World of Warcraft may or may not have been an original idea, depending on who you ask, but it did have a large following in the Warcraft games. This was further strengthened by Blizzard, who brought Diablo and Starcraft to the gaming community. It was released, and it was a hit. A big hit. Considering a few million players grind away daily, spending their hard earned money every month, little doubt can be found about its popularity.

In my opinion, WoW holds true with most because it's like another world. Say in reality, or "rl" as most know it, you aren't that socially accepted. In WoW, you can be just about anybody. Your friends will know your character and only your character. Whether you act as you would normally, or actually change like Bruce Banner into the Hulk, WoW can be your game.

So yes, WoW does little to change games, and grinding seems to have become the eternal staple of online games, but it's massive popularity comes from the more social areas of the game.

    Think of it this way.

Blizzard did to mmorpgs what McDonalds did to fast food.image

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

The potential of it's pvp is it's real fun for me, but as it stands I think it's a joke.

McDonald's created fast food, Dick and Mac McDonald invented the Speedee Service System in 1940. True, the company is now under the operation of Ray Kroc who started in 1955, but it's still the originator.

That being said, WoW is not the originator of MMORPGs. They did, however, make them accesible to everyone. That's probably the smartest move. Actually, I think it just says something about other developers at the time, unwilling to take a risk that the average John Q Videogamer would be interested in such a game.

We all owe a big thank you to Blizzard, proving that not everyone really wants to spend massive quantitites of time on worthless time sinks just to play a game (take that, Brad McQuaid). Now if only they'd realize that making a game for casual players that requires endless hours of grinding at the end is not a suitable practice for maintaining subscription rates. Hopefully they fix all that in the expansion.

McDonalds isn't nearly as fun as Warcraft.

Well I actually canceled my WoW account but it was really hard. I hit level 60 on my troll shaman and basically forced myself to quit cause I was too addicted and got frustrated with the End Game raiding. Before I played WoW, my only other MMO was EQ2. So bare withg me here. I was playing EQ2 at launch with my wood elf scout to 18. Got really frsutrated with EQ2 cause of no pvp. EQ2 had that awful debt system which made teaming suck. Also it was a long grind at the time too. just made no sense to me why pvp wasnt in the game at launch. But my friends said WoW had good pvp and was a big war 24/7. And WoW has that nice rested xp bonus too.

I had so much fun leveling to 60. I didnt notice any grind. Keep in mind I was an MMO newbie though. I adored the pvp. The pvp got frustrating only because I hate the way rogues can put you to sleep, steal the ore you're mining, then bounce. Really I just couldnt stand rogues much. I felt they ruined pvp. Also, didnt like how you must raid for high end gear to compete. Molten core took my guiold like 5 hrs to do. I'm married with a kid. I cant stay on that long.... So the 60 end game got me down.

But it deserves all the praise. ever since I've been playing other MMOs like CoX and Rappelz. But none of them can touch WoW. WoW is much better designed and gets tons of updates and has a thriving community. On the downside, their community is sorta full of mean people as well but thats a personal thing.
