A serious question about mathematics.

I'm really looking forward to trying SoH and was bummed that I missed the beta test, but one question has been nagging me since I've heard about SoH and went out and read all the reviews about this game.  As I read them about a week ago, I forget the actual numbers, but there's something like 5-10k players for each realm/shard/server, and like 20-50k square miles of ground?  Doesn't this add up to an EMPTY WORLD?  I don't like the prospect of running across huge fantasical landscapes for hours with never another living person in sight.  Am I missing something?  I hope so.

3-5k / server and sigil has stated before that the starting world of VSOH will be about 2/3 of WoW world (minus the water which is sort of enormous). I wouldnt worry about underpopulation or empty worlds because there's no wow server that holds 5k ppl simultaniously anyway.

The first part sounds right, but I think that second part is off by a factor of about about a hundred.

An early report said one "continent" is about 100 square miles.  http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/517/517254p1.html

The world of Telon is about 800 km2. The size of New York City, about a four hour run from end to end. That's a long run for an MMO.

I think its still open for discussion, no final decision on server amounts.

I would guess they have stated a number to get feed back.

Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

    Conclusions

Inside the conclusion article the following is written down (as said by VSOH employee):

    The Continents of Telon

Before I get in to the specific continents let me just drop the fact that the map of Telon is over 6,000 square kilometers! Most of this space is currently occupied by water, but it will eventually be expansion content and a lot of it is already ready for sea exploration. Those areas designated for future content will be inaccessible at launch. All of the land currently in the game occupies less then 500 square kilometers, so you know Sigil means it when they say that they’ve got Vanguard planned up to 7 years ahead.

    Thestra

We’ve all heard that the continent of Thestra is massive, but we’ve never actually had the numbers to prove it. Now we do. Thestra, including surrounding islands, is nearly 240 square kilometers of land. That’s BIG. This massive piece of land is the northern continent of Telon. Up in the north the Thestrans are enjoying a medieval environment.

    Qalia

Now we travel to the southern continent of Qalia, another massive beast that nearly matches the colossal size of Thestra and weighs in at nearly 200 square kilometers! Unlike Thestra, Qalia is a desert land and has an Arabian nights/Persian theme. There is even a river that runs through the entire continent (and yes, players can sail down it).

    Kojan

While attending Vanguard Gamer Day we got a sneak peek at the ever elusive continent of Kojan. Sigil has been quiet about this little piece of land for some time. Oh, and when I say little I really mean it! Kojan is under 40 square kilometers! While roaming around Kojan players will enjoy an Asian/Pan Pacific inspired environment. There’s not much more I can say about the continent because we had a brief fly through.

    And at the very bottom:

    Nelson’s Little Fact List

To conclude my Vanguard Gamer Day report I’ve compiled a list of various other facts and tidbits that I learned along the way:

    • Vanguard will be released in Q1 2007
    • The European launch will as soon after the North American launch as possible (localization takes time)
    • Players from anywhere in the world can play on any server regardless of the server’s geographical location
    • Vanguard will not be released on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3
    • The adventuring classes of Berserker and Inquisitor will not be in at launch (per Darrin McPherson)
    • The crafting class of Alchemist will not be in at launch (per Salim Grant)
    • A single character can be an adventurer, crafter, and diplomat
    • The amount of characters per server/account has not yet been defined
    • Server capacity will be between 3,000 and 5,000
    • Expansions will be released every 9-12 months
    • Free content pushes are targeted for release on a monthly basis
    • Approximately 10,000 people have currently been invited to beta
    • Beta testers will receive recognition for their contributions with an in-game item at launch
    • Vanguard’s foundation has been laid and now Sigil is working on completing the content drive and polishing up the game
That's it for Vanguard Gamer Day! What an event...
