Thomas Jefferson. The best President this country has ever had. And one of the greatest philosophers to back personal freedom and liberty this planet has ever seen.
Sad to say, but if he were alive today he would be considered a radical by most Americans. Not only that, but he probably wouldn't even make it to the presidential runoffs.

Killing and injuring hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians. That's wonderfull, a great man he was. Indeed, it did keep japan from getting very involved in WWII, but still, did he have to kill so many innocents in the process?
Take a lesson in the Japanese culture of the time period, and you will understand.
Heres a scenario, civilians armed with hand tools charging one soldier on a hill with a high powered machinegun. If enough come, they will eventually kill that soldier, but huge numbers would die in the process. Much of Japan's population were quite willing to make that sacrifice, preffering death to surrender. That was proven beyond a doubt to Truman and the rest of the world when we fought them on the outer isles.
The bombs REDUCED by leaps and bounds the numbers of civilian casualties a conventional attack would have caused.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. Hemingway

Lindon(sp?) B Johnson, he took over when Kennedy was assasinated...and you hit the nail on the head as to why I dislike Carter...how he is acting in the present isn't helping him either.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
2) Bush Jr - For being a strong president, his agenda is getting done despite the shrill cries from traitorous libtards. Good personality, I approve of the way he is handling the Islamofascists.
Those are the only 2 I like, the rest of em were pretty much all pussy cowards.
In the grand scheme of things George Washington doesn't matter. If he wasn't around we'd still be Brits and everything would pretty much be the same.
You can bash Bush all you want, but his accomplishments have made America stronger and better. I know the list is long and dont expect you to read the whole thing, but they are all true. He is truly a great President IMO, no matter what some of you say.

Defense & Foreign Policy
Successfully executed two wars in the aftermath of 9/11/01: Afghanistan and Iraq. 50 million people who had lived under tyrannical regimes now live in freedom.
Saddam Hussein is now in prison. His two murderous sons are dead. All but a handful of the regime's senior members were killed or captured.
Leader by leader and member by member, al Qaida is being hunted down in dozens of countries around the world. Of the senior al Qaida leaders, operational managers, and key facilitators the U.S. Government has been tracking, nearly two-thirds have been taken into custody or killed. The detentions or deaths of senior al Qaida leaders, including Khalid Shaykh Muhammad, the mastermind of 9/11, and Muhammad Atef, Osama bin Laden's second-in-command until his death in late 2001, have been important in the War on Terror.
Disarmed Libya of its chemical, nuclear and biological WMD's without bribes or bloodshed.
Continues to execute the War On Terror, getting worldwide cooperation to track funds/terrorists. Has cut off much of the terrorists' funding, and captured or killed many key leaders of the al Qaeda network.
Initiated a comprehensive review of our military, which was completed just prior to 9/11/01, and which accurately reported that ASYMMETRICAL WARFARE capabilities were critical in the 21st Century.
Killed the old US/Soviet Union ABM Treaty that was preventing the U.S. from deploying our ABM defenses.

Globalization & Internationalism
Challenged the United Nations to live up to their responsibilities and not become another League of Nations (in other words, showed the UN to be completely irrelevant).
Killed U.S. involvement in the International Criminal Court.
Told the United Nations we weren't interested in their plans for gun control (i.e., the International Ban on Small Arms Trafficking Treaty).*
The only President since the founding of the UN to essentially tell that organization it is irrelevant. He said: "The conduct of the Iraqi regime is a threat to the authority of the United Nations, and a threat to peace. Iraq has answered a decade of UN demands with a decade of defiance. All the world now faces a test, and the United Nations a difficult and defining moment. Are Security Council resolutions to be honored and enforced, or cast aside without consequence? Will the United Nations serve the purpose of its founding, or will it be irrelevant?" We all know the outcome and the answer.
Told the Congress and the world, "America will never seek a permission slip to defend the security of our country."
Government Reform
Improved government efficiency by putting hundreds of thousands of jobs put up for bid. This weakens public-sector unions and cuts undeserved pay raises.
Initiated review of all federal agencies with the goal of eliminating federal jobs (completed September 2003) in an effort to reduce the size of the federal government while increasing private sector jobs.
Led the most extensive reorganization the Federal bureaucracy in over 50 years: After 9/11, condensed 20+ overlapping agencies and their intelligence sectors into one agency, the Department of Homeland Security.*
Ordered each agency to draft a five-year plan to restructure itself, with fewer managers.
Converted federal service contracts to performance-based contracts wherever possible so that the contractor has measurable performance goals.
Health
Strengthen the National Health Service Corps to put more physicians in the neediest areas, and make its scholarship funds tax-free.
Double the research budget of the National Institutes of Health.
Signed Medicare Reform, which includes:
A 10-year privatization option.
Prescription drug benefits: Prior to this reform, Medicare paid for extended hospital stays for ulcer surgery, for example, at a cost of about $28,000 per patient. Yet Medicare would not pay for the drugs that eliminate the cause of most ulcers, drugs that cost about $500 a year. Now, drug coverage under Medicare will allow seniors to replace more expensive surgeries and hospitalizations with less expensive prescription medicine.
More health care choices: As President Bush stated, " when seniors have the ability to make choices, health care plans within Medicare will have to compete for their business by offering higher quality service [at lower cost]. For the seniors of America, more choices and more control will mean better health care. These are the kinds of health care options we give to the members of Congress and federal employees. What's good for members of Congress is also good for seniors.
New Health Savings Accounts: Effective January 1, 2004, Americans can set aside up to $4,500 every year, tax free, to save for medical expenses. Depending on your tax bracket, that means you'll save between 10 to 35 percent on any costs covered by money in your account. Every year, the money not spent would stay in the account and gain interest tax-free, just like an IRA. These accounts will be good for small business owners, and employees. More businesses can focus on covering workers for major medical problems, such as hospitalization for an injury or illness. At the same time, employees and their families will use these accounts to cover doctors visits, or lab tests, or other smaller costs. Some employers will contribute to employee health accounts. This will help more American families get the health care they need at the price they can afford.
*See Government Reform above. Under President Bush's leadership, America has made an unprecedented commitment to homeland security.
Has CONSTRUCTION in process on the first 10 ABM silos in Alaska so that America will have a defense against North Korean nukes. Has ordered national and theater ballistic missile defenses to be deployed by 2004.
Announced a 9.7% increase in government-wide homeland security funding in his FY 2005 budget, nearly tripling the FY 2001 levels (excluding the Department of Defense and Project BioShield).
Before DHS was created, there were inspectors from three different agencies of the Federal Government and Border Patrol officers protecting our borders. Through DHS, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) now consolidates all border activities into a single agency to create "one face at the border." This not only better secures the borders of the United States, but it also eliminates many of the inefficiencies that occurred under the old system. With over 18,000 CBP inspectors and 11,000 Border Patrol agents, CBP has 29,000 uniformed officers on our borders.
The Border Patrol is continuing installation of monitoring devices along the borders to detect illegal activity.
Launched Operation Tarmac to investigate businesses and workers in the secure areas of domestic airports and ensure immigration law compliance. Since 9/11, DHS has audited 3,640 businesses, examined 259,037 employee records, arrested 1,030 unauthorized workers, and participated in the criminal indictment of 774 individuals.
Since September 11, 2001, the Coast Guard has conducted more than 124,000 port security patrols, 13,000 air patrols, boarded more than 92,000 vessels, interdicted over 14,000 individuals attempting to enter the United States illegally, and created and maintained more than 90 Maritime Security Zones.
Announced the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), an internet-based system that is improving America's ability to track and monitor foreign students and exchange visitors. Over 870,000 students are registered in SEVIS. Of 285 completed field investigations, 71 aliens were arrested.
This week, the US-VISIT program began to digitally collect biometric identifiers to record the entry and exit of aliens who travel into the U.S on a visa. Together with the standard information, this new program will confirm compliance with visa and immigration policies.
Eliminated INS bureaucratic redundancies and lack of accountability.
Split the Immigration and Naturalization Service into two agencies: one to protect the border and interior, the other to deal with naturalization.
Signed the workplace verification bill to prevent hiring of illegal aliens.
Established a six-month deadline for processing immigration applications.
Information regarding nearly 100% of all containerized cargo is carefully screened by DHS before it arrives in the United States. Higher risk shipments are physically inspected for terrorist weapons and contraband prior to being released from the port of entry. Advanced technologies are being deployed to identify warning signs of chemical, biological, or radiological attacks. Since September 11, 2001, hundreds of thousands of first responders across America have been trained to recognize and respond to the effects of a WMD attack.
Judiciary & Tort Reform
Is urging federal liability reform to eliminate frivolous lawsuits.
Killed the liberal ABA's unconstitutional role in vetting federal judges. The Senate is supposed to advise and consent, not the ABA.
Is nominating strong, conservative judges to the judiciary.
Supports class action reform bill which limits lawyer fees so that more settlement money goes to victims.
Politics
His leadership resulted in Republican gains in the House and Senate, solidifying Republican control of both houses of Congress and the presidency.
Signed an EO enforcing the Supreme Court's Beck decision regarding union dues being used for political campaigns against individual's wishes.
Second Amendment
Ordered Attorney General Ashcroft to formally notify the Supreme Court that the OFFICIAL U.S. government position on the 2nd Amendment is that it supports INDIVIDUAL rights to own firearms, and is NOT a Leftist-imagined "collective" right.
Signed TWO bills into law that arm our pilots with handguns in the cockpit.
Currently pushing for full immunity from lawsuits for our national gun manufacturers.
*See Globalization & Internationalism.
Traditional Values, Compassion & Volunteerism
Endorses and promotes "The Responsibility Era." President Bush often speaks of the necessity of personal responsibility and civic volunteerism. He said, "In a compassionate society, people respect one another and take responsibility for the decisions they make in life. My hope is to change the culture from one that has said, if it feels good, do it; if you've got a problem, blame somebody else to one in which every single American understands that he or she is responsible for the decisions that you make; you're responsible for loving your children with all your heart and all your soul; you're responsible for being involved with the quality of the education of your children; you're responsible for making sure the community in which you live is safe; you're responsible for loving your neighbor, just like you would like to be loved yourself."
Started the USA Freedom Corps, the most comprehensive clearinghouse of volunteer opportunities ever offered. For the first time in history, Americans can enter geographic information about where they want to get involved, such as state or zip code, as well as areas of interest ranging from education to the environment, and they can access volunteer opportunities offered by more than 50,000 organizations across the country and around the world.
Established the The White House Office and the Centers for the Faith-Based and Community Initiative located in seven Federal agencies. The faith-based initiative supports the essential work of these important organizations. The goal is to make sure that grassroots leaders can compete on an equal footing for federal dollars, receive greater private support, and face fewer bureaucratic barriers. Work focuses on at-risk youth, ex-offenders, the homeless and hungry, substance abusers, those with HIV/AIDS, and welfare-to-work families.
The White House released a guidebook fully describing the Administration's belief that faith-based groups have a Constitutionally-protected right to maintain their religious identity through hiring even when Federal funds are involved.
Issued an EO implementing the Supreme Court's Olmstead ruling, which requires moving disabled people from institutions to community-based facilities when possible.
Increased funding for low-interest loan programs to help people with disabilities purchase devices to assist them.
Revised the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Section 8 rent subsidies to disabled people, permitting them to use up to a year's worth of vouchers to finance down payments on homes. HUD has started pilot programs in 11 states.
Committed US funds to purchase medicine for millions of men, women and children now suffering with AIDS in Africa.
Heeding the words of our own Declaration of Independence, the president laid out the non-negotiable demands of human dignity for all people everywhere. On January 29, 2002, he said, "No nation owns these aspirations, and no nation is exempt from them. We have no intention of imposing our culture. But America will always stand firm for the non-negotiable demands of human dignity." As stated by the President, they are a virtual manifesto of conservative principles:
As outfctrl said, that is really long and most of us probably won't read all of it. I made it about half-way through lol.
Anyways, about half the things I read are in fact not good things. I support Bush, firstly because I support the President in virtually all actions, second of all because I still think he is a decent President, the vote is still out on this one though. I'll decide some years down the road, I suppose.
The abortion laws are imo not a good thing. I am morally pro-life, but I don't feel the government should be able to tell people what is wrong and right on moral/ethical matters.
I'm also against your mention of reintroducing religion/God, in government/society. I'm a 'spiritual' person, but yet again am against forcing things on the people. I support Bush's display of devotion and religious ethics, but only on a personal level.
I think Bush is a VERY good PERSON. I am not too sure about his presidency, however. I am for small government, limited controls, etc. Bush has made the government larger and given it more power.
Of course, the Bush administration is not the only person causing this. Congress is just a joke. We don't need to have these crooks in session year round. Maybe one month a year. Senators like Ted Kennedy make their living off of sitting in Congress and not doing anything. The last thing we need is MORE laws. They sit in session so long they have to keep pumping out more laws to make it look like they are doing something.
The Bush administration isn't bad, the way our government functions is.

Having commanded through peril his armies to victory, he gave up power. He suppressed Shays Rebellion and preserved the Articles of Confederation. He presided over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. He created the informal term limits for presidents. 2. Thomas Jefferson His purchase of "Louisiana" did not just double the size of the United States, but it meant that the refugees from Ireland, Italy, Poland, Russia, and Germany would have land to settle and - with all the risks inherent in true freedom - to thrive. Jefferson also defeated the first, and in many ways the greatest, threat to our constitutional liberties. When the Federalists passed the Alien and Sedition Acts, it was serious business. 3. Ronald Reagan He won a Cold War without bloodshed and restored the principles of limited government to their proper place. Ronald Reagan faced the nearly mortal gunshot wound from a would-be assassin not just with courage, but with humor. 4. Abraham Lincoln His tenacity preserved the Union and his vision began the process of emancipation. Lincoln was a very political animal, but he was also a very benevolent man whose fundamental goodness has been an inspiration to later presidents. 5. George W. Bush He has already established himself as at least our fifth best president, and he may well end up higher than fifth. That is, of course, the obvious fact about George W. Bush. He has always done much better than expected. Al Gore was supposed to whip him in the debates. Democrats were supposed to steal Florida, while Bush fumbled around. Washington was supposed to be immune to his charm. Long before September 11, George W. Bush had shown all sensible people that he was much more talented than liberals liked to think and that he wanted political power to do good. President Bush has the confidence to surround himself with men and women who would be great presidents themselves - Dick Cheney, Lynne Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, and Condi Rice - and this willingness to trust that other people also can carry the banner of liberty is the perfect bookend to our first president. President Bush is also proving his greatness by defining evil and focusing his attention on that evil. It is easy to paint with broad strokes, and men like Clinton and FDR were great at lumping people together. It is hard - intellectually and morally - to pinpoint what needs to be done. President Bush is relaxed, good natured, but above all he is focused. Those are the five best. America has generally been blessed with good presidents. Dwight Eisenhower, Calvin Coolidge, James Madison, John Kennedy, George H. Bush, and Harry Truman should probably be on a short list of very good presidents. President Bush, like the great presidents before him, will bring to us what Abraham Lincoln so eloquently described as "A new birth of freedom." Let us give thanks.

--Was the only true "commander in chief," actually donning a uniform to put down the "Whiskey Rebellion," personally.
--Prefering that Congress be able to pass laws in an unencumbered way, he exercised his veto prerogative only twice, and gave good, non-partisain reasons for the veto in each case.
--Refined the constitutional role of the president by including diplomacy alongside the role as commander in chief, as practiced in terms of negotiations between France and England.
--Was responsible for defining the scope and methods of the office, much of which are practiced to this day.
--Was the only US president to serve the entirety of his presidency in Federal Hall, NY.
2) Franklin Delano Roosevelt
--Put unemployed Americans back to work, all while building dams, roads, bridges, and public works.
--Created the Securities and Exchange Commission to prevent fraud on Wall Street.
--Created FDIC to protect the savings of bank patrons.
--Stood up to an activist Supreme Court.
--Provided naval vessels and supplies to Britain, even when Congress refused to side with Britain officially.
--Though he armed the US considerably, building "the Arsenal of Democracy," he only deployed American troops upon a true, constitutional declaration of war as passed by both houses of Congress.
--Was a shrewd diplomat, and was present at Yalta, which laid the foundation for the modern, international system.
--Appointed some of the most sound, articulate, and restrained legal minds for the Supreme Court (Hugo Black and Felix Frankfurter come to mind).
3) Theodore Roosevelt
--The first "modern" president who spoke with the people directly.
--A war hero, TR crafted the "big stick" policy. Offered humanitarian aid to undeveloped nations.
--The first president to have an "environmental policy," by setting aside lands for conservation.
--The Panama Cannal opened up naval and merchant shipping between east and west.
--Negotiated settlements between large industries, and the workers who worked in them, using the White House and the "bully pulpit" to get each side to come to a resolution.
--Due to the health risks posed by the industrialization of food processing, TR enacted standards for food safety, and labeling.
4) Dwight D. Eisenhower
--Reformed the way the White House functioned as a modern, responsive organization. Some of the improvements Eisenhower created, like the Chief of Staff position, can be readily observed, but most are not seen.
--Mobilized the National Guard to enforce the Supreme Court ruling in Brown v Board of Education to desegragate the schools in Little Rock, Arkansas.
--Ensured that the Soviets wouldn't engage the US directly by negotiating with strength, yet prudence.
--Governed with restraint, and neutrality in terms of political partisainship.
--Allowed Congress to make laws, and did not see it as the president's role to propose much legislation.
5) James K. Polk
--Responsible for forming the continental United States as we know it today (sans Hawaii, Alaska, and small parts of the southwest). Expanded US territory to the Pacific Ocean, due to purchases, negotiations, and the capture of Mexico City.
--Worked constantly in his office, crafting policy singlehandedly, without the need for many advisors.
--The first US postage stamps, the first national museum, and many monuments in Washington DC and elsewhere were created by Polk's administration.
--One of the most efficient and productive "policy presidents" in US history.

Did you, yah know, actually think while typing that out? Yes. As I reread it now, I still stand by what I said. The government is too big and it's using religion and personal ethics to control people.

Originally posted by Spathotan An American who puts a Bush on his "top 5 best" list, and not FDR should not be taken seriously.
I am tired of people bashing Bush about the war in Iraq and making him a bad president because of it. I believe he did the right thing. As far as FDR...he made some serious blunders.
Iraq pales by comparison with FDRs acts of hostility to Japan and Germany, provoking Pearl Harbor, when he knew or should have known we were drastically unprepared for World War. When FDR taunted Japan, stopped shipping them supplies we had always sent them, and practically begged them to go to war with us, it was probably the right moral thing to do. In fact it surely was. But he was the most popular President of all time. He had fairly good (but far from perfect) control of Congress. He could have made sure we were better armed before he got us into war. The unpreparedness of U.S. forces caused us terrible losses at Pearl Harbor and far worse ones in the Philippines. They let hundreds of U.S. vessels go to the bottom along with their brave crews under the U-boat onslaught. Yes, he did learn and geared us up for total war. But the mistakes at the beginning were extremely bad.
That was a far bigger foreign policy mistake than Iraq.
FDR caving in at Yalta, baiting the greatest man of all time, Winston Churchill, and instead siding with the worst killer of his own people of all time, J.V. Stalin, to create a Soviet slave empire in Eastern Europe that was a far worse mistake than the Iraq war and cost far more lives. Sending captured Russians back to Stalin to be murdered by the hundreds of thousands that was a far worse mistake than Iraq.
That was a far bigger foreign policy mistake than Iraq.

2) Bush Jr - For being a strong president, his agenda is getting done

for ulcer surgery, for example, at a cost of about $28,000 per patient. Yet
Medicare would not pay for the drugs that eliminate the cause of most ulcers,
drugs that cost about $500 a year. Now, drug coverage under Medicare will allow
seniors to replace more expensive surgeries and hospitalizations with less
expensive prescription medicine.
President Bush stated, " when seniors have the ability to make choices, health
care plans within Medicare will have to compete for their business by offering
higher quality service [at lower cost]. For the seniors of America, more choices
and more control will mean better health care. These are the kinds of health
care options we give to the members of Congress and federal employees. What's
good for members of Congress is also good for seniors.
Accounts: Effective January 1, 2004, Americans can set aside up to $4,500
every year, tax free, to save for medical expenses. Depending on your tax
bracket, that means you'll save between 10 to 35 percent on any costs covered by
money in your account. Every year, the money not spent would stay in the account
and gain interest tax-free, just like an IRA. These accounts will be good for
small business owners, and employees. More businesses can focus on covering
workers for major medical problems, such as hospitalization for an injury or
illness. At the same time, employees and their families will use these accounts
to cover doctors visits, or lab tests, or other smaller costs. Some employers
will contribute to employee health accounts. This will help more American
families get the health care they need at the price they can afford.

Traditional Values, Compassion &
Volunteerism
"The Responsibility Era." President Bush often speaks of the necessity of
personal responsibility and civic volunteerism. He said, "In a compassionate
society, people respect one another and take responsibility for the decisions
they make in life. My hope is to change the culture from one that has said, if
it feels good, do it; if you've got a problem, blame somebody else to one in
which every single American understands that he or she is responsible for the
decisions that you make; you're responsible for loving your children with all
your heart and all your soul; you're responsible for being involved with the
quality of the education of your children; you're responsible for making sure
the community in which you live is safe; you're responsible for loving your
neighbor, just like you would like to be loved yourself."

they are a virtual manifesto of conservative principles:

1) George Washington

Yes. As I reread it now, I still stand by what I said. The government is too big and it's using religion and personal ethics to control people.

Iraq
pales by comparison with FDRs acts of hostility to Japan and Germany,
provoking Pearl Harbor, when he knew or should have known we were
drastically unprepared for World War. When FDR taunted Japan, stopped
shipping them supplies we had always sent them, and practically begged
them to go to war with us, it was probably the right moral thing to do.
In fact it surely was. But he was the most popular President of all
time. He had fairly good (but far from perfect) control of Congress. He
could have made sure we were better armed before he got us into war.
The unpreparedness of U.S. forces caused us terrible losses at Pearl
Harbor and far worse ones in the Philippines. They let hundreds of U.S.
vessels go to the bottom along with their brave crews under the U-boat
onslaught. Yes, he did learn and geared us up for total war. But the
mistakes at the beginning were extremely bad.
That was a far bigger foreign policy mistake than Iraq.
FDR caving in at Yalta, baiting the greatest man of all time, Winston
Churchill, and instead siding with the worst killer of his own people of all
time, J.V. Stalin, to create a Soviet slave empire in Eastern Europe that was
a far worse mistake than the Iraq war and cost far more lives. Sending captured
Russians back to Stalin to be murdered by the hundreds of thousands that was a
far worse mistake than Iraq.
That was a far bigger foreign policy mistake than Iraq.
