Don't know if anyone has done a poll on this or not, but I think it should be interesting. My questions is, "How Many Years Would You Play An Excellent MMORPG Game?"
Myself personally, I would say 3 years would be sufficient enough to complete everything I'd want to complete. Even with expansions coming out, I would probably want to try something else after 3 years. There would still be a slight chance of returning to my favorite MMORPG game if nothing else was worth playing, but I probably wouldn't play it that often.
What does everyone else think? If a MMORPG is excellent and you are having a great time playing it, how long would you play it for and why?

If there was one I liked enough to play "continually", then I would play it til I found a better/different/one I liked better. No matter how long that took.
If the MMORPG would be *excellent*, I would most likely play it all my life and you would never read me again. Folks would think I am sick to play on a 3d MMORPG when virtual reality would be around, but it would be excellent, I would not care to try to new games at all! A little like we think folks playing old games are simply sick (how many peoples you know shiver over folks playing diablo or MUDS?)
But it really need to be excellent and remain excellent(have many upgrade to keep motivating folks, not needing in graphics if the gameplay and the system are always taken care of).
In fact, what would actually prolly kill the MMORPG would be when the lack of new blood combining with poor server merging(or no new servers to merge with) would affect me outside of some soloing aspect and remove the excellent rating, lack of fellow players would remove the excellent rating alone...so let take UO or EQ and say the game would died in like 10 years after existence(could be slightly less, but could be a lot more), if they dont do poor handling of the servers merging, I would be there till the end.
The game need to be near perfect on some aspect for me to ever make a come back, considering I come back to EQ about 3 or 4 times, it mean there are many points in the game that are near perfection IMHO. Saddly, a few orthers are major weakness as well(lack of significant progress combine with giving progress to raiders while you dont want to raid would be my major thing here)
I think we just found Bin Laden! (point to the above cat snipper)

I played EQ for 4.5 years.. still pay cause I have a hard time quitting. I am willing to dedicate the same time and resources to another game if it was as faithful to my playstyle as EQ was.
No limit to my patience...

Yes, when I say "excellent", I mean staying excellent throughout the life of the game. It would always be fun and refreshing when you play it. I know there is no MMORPG out there right now that's like this, but what if there were, would you be playing it 10 years from now.
I think most people will stay for at least 3 years and then try something else for awhile and then come back to the "excellent" MMORPG. Hopefully WoW will fit in the "excellent" category, but we'll wait and see.

I'll play any game for as long as it is fun.
4 years maximum. Even though it's excellent, i could not play it longer than 4 years because mmorpg's just keep getting more advanced and advanced.
Ever see those sex crazed guys, who go around flirring and stairing with everygirl they see and everytime you see them they're with a diffrent woman. Yeah... um thats like me and mmorpgs. I love to look and stair, I love everything about them, and because I love them so much, I can never settle down. I'm always on the prowel for the next thing, and so I'm never happy with what I have.
Although I am getting older in viritual life, and I would like to settle down one day. You know, 4 lvl 50 characters, a house, white picket fence the whole deal. I don't know maybe if I found the right game and could keep myself off of boards like this then maybe, just maybe, I might be able to live a happy and fullfilling viritual life. Untill then... I off to go look at some more sexy screenshots.

3 years sounds right just about a few months shy of my time in EQ.
After that it gets pretty old and boring for me.
Thats a tough question. Under the guidlines of "Excellent" as you stated, there would be no reason for me to find another game. If "Excellent" includes adding new content, features and areas to explore I couldn't imagine having to look for a new game. If by "Excellent" you mean better than what we have and alot of fun, but moving at the pace of current games with regard to expansion. I think eventually I would grow tired of it. Prolly around the 2-3 year mark. Without significant expansion and new features, even games that are fun grow old for me. Unfortunately it becomes a "been there " "done that" type of mentality for me.
Its a pretty "loaded" question that you ask.

Difficult question. First thing, no-one would choose to play a MMOG (RPG? Yeah, right) that wasn't excellent - unless extremely limited in choice. Second, there are way too many variables to consider including RL demands (my bug-bear).
As soon as a MMOG stops becoming fun and/or dependent on RL demands then I'll stop. There are a couple of obvious points:
1. Lack of continued support
2. Lack of CS support
3. Lack of community
Equals dead game. Time to move on.
For me, MMOG's are dependent on my free-time more than anything else.
EQ:
I left EQ after 18 months not reaching my goals of achieving planar level i.e. 46+ and not performing in any Dragon raids because I was a semi-casual player and liked to do my own thing. No biggie. However, over time it began to become increasingly difficult to find like-minded players who wanted to level, gain skill and experience in 'difficult' zones such as Unrest and Castle Mistmoore. Instead, the "recruit and level" mentality started to take over.
EQ on a personal level had ceased to be fun. Yes, I could have stuck around and put some Herculian effort into meeting people who shared my interests but the ol' RL thang kicked in. Absolutely no regrets about leaving because it was the right decision at the right time.
EvE:
I do regret leaving Eve because although RL did intervene in the form of accountancy, I became bored because I did not put significant effort into what really is a social MMOG. I tried playing as a lone shark, doing my own thing - which Eve allows - but Eve is so, so much better when player dynamics are involved. However, Eve is a slow-burner and requires a LOT of effort, which if you're willing to initially put in really rewards you with immersive gameplay.
3 years is a good median figure.

P.s. As Clever_Gloves pointed out MMOG's are hobbies and NOT games.

I played Anarchy Online for 2 years, I kind of got bored and the lastest expantion killed the game for me. I'm hoping WoW or Guild Wars will be the games to keep me occupied.

Depends on how great the content and updates are. I get bored pretty fast as I am usually a hardcore grinder when I game. My longest stint in a game with a little over 2 years as a Beta tester for DAOC. I could see myself playing another game that long but it would have to be the most dynamic and spectacular game to date.
I am hoping WOW and GW will blow me away and I last a few years with both of those. I am also becoming more impressed with EQ 2 although I can't stand sony one bit it is going to have to be exceptional for me to want to try it. MEO is also looking good as of late so there are some good games on the way that may draw me in for a considerable amount of time one could only hope.

Basically I would play an "excellent" MMORPG for as long as it existed.
I would not willingly give up the effort I have invested in my character(s) in a game if that game still presented interest for me.
For me, all I really look for is a fairly simple intro into the game and a confortable UI. I don't need flash graphics or fast action gameplay. I'm happy to slowly build up my character and try out lots of different things with it while still at a low level. Doing quests and learning skills are much more fun to me usually than bashing monsters (though I do my fair share of that). Basically, if the game catches my interest early on, I will then try to do everything I can with my character(s) within the game and I'm in no rush to finish things or accumulate wealth and items.
Lot of great replies. I could definitely understand if RL got in the way of someone playing. If you got married and started a family your game time would definitely be minimal and that might take you away from the game for awhile. You could also lose your job and have to cut back on things which may cause you to cancel your account. I still say three years only because I would probably get tired of running around the same world again and again. Even with excellent content and having the time of my life playing, I would still feel like I was missing something else and would want to try a different MMO game. I don't think I would close my account. With all that time and effort I had put in on my character, I'd keep the account open. Maybe I'd sell it for a few thousand.
