Vanguard's latest vid- A little concerned

This is the link to MMORPG's latest Vanguard video in the News room:

I am curious what others who are interessted in Vanguard think of what I saw when I viewed it.

Some nice video...in a way but:

This video is leaving me a bit concerned about the playability of this game on most current "gaming" computers. If you watch the video closely it seems the computer SOE is using is REALLY struggling with pushing the graphics. Not so much on the flying scenes, but the scenes with walking involved over the terrain. It's expecially noticable going through the archway/doorway; at the edges of the screen the graphics get really blocky. The part just after the horse running in the sand seems VERY choppy in what looks to be a pretty wide open, basic town environment. The scene with the lanterns stretching across the darkened streets shows much the same "strain."  I wonder how performance would be with say 20-30 other people moving in the scenes.

I realize they are still bug fixing, sharpening code, etc,but I assume SOE is using one of the best systems they can buy. I worry about the "above-average-core gamer's" experience.  It didn't seem like it was a Google video problem.  I could be totally off base but this is what I observed, and as one of those players it does leave me a bit concerned.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Everquest 2 also looks beautiful on many gameplay video's,but can run on quite a lot of systems.

i want somrthing new .. something different .. something interesting .. something i havent seen and subscribed to 5 times already ....

something like mad max ... or pirates of the carribean .. or maybe even a new cyberpunk mmo ...

They really are showing the wrong areas for advertising the game.  I saw a instanced dungeon from someone I know and it looks pretty good.  The spec mapping might have been overdone though.  If you ask me the game still looks pretty bland and ugly(not in a good way), however the game offers other features that most in this genre just don't have yet.  I think I remember saying like a year ago that if you sacrafice the 2 gigs of graphics and 1 gig of voices.  You would have enough programming room to make someone's dream mmo.  This is really where vanguard has been heading.

Now that you mention it the graphics look pretty choppy.  Even in a few of the other vids I saw, the FPS was jerky.  I am thinking it could be 1 of 2 things.  1, they capped FPS below 30 FPS. 2, they are taking the really bad approach that EQ2 took and made a game for future systems.  They are using solid Optimization techniques so it probably won't be as big of a problem on release.  That is if they want to sell more then 10k copies.

nothing against EQ2 ( I still play it and love it)

but it looks just like EQ2.  Hell....you could have said it was an expansion pack video and I would have fell for it

    Not defending the game but

When capturing the game vid, you use tools like Frapper.

And it can not capture the original FPS , it always makes it seem chopy and around 14 fps

Remember it hasnt been compressed or optimised yet so it wont run like it will when its released.

Plus the world is fully 3d and MASSIVE so it will be a big game

the gameplay is what dissapointed me the most.

I got staretd in MMOs on UO.  I played EQ1, EQ2, WoW, GuildWars, and D&D online.

I've beta tested WoW, D&D Online, and now Vanguard.

All these games when i first picked them up i couldnt put them down.  I didnt want to log off because they were so engrossing.

However, with Vanguard once i log off i feel i dont have a reason or desire to log back in.

Vanguard is EQ2's replacement pack, remember it's an SOE product now.

That is disheartening that you had to play on the lowest settings in the VG Beta with 1.2gigs of Ram, 256 mb vid and a 2.8 cpu. That's the RECOMMENDED reqs for that game- not the minimum reqs:( I knew the game was a hog but that's ridiculous.

I was hoping to play with the minimum requirements after upgrading my video to 128mb and putting an 80 gig HD in. But I'm not wasting the money if your "recommended" specs get you 2-6 fps:( I play AC and WoW with the minimum specs and am able to play with no problems (just choppy in the high pop areas) -but looks like that won't be possible in Vanguard. Thank you- you saved me the grief of buying it and finding out the playability was zilch on my machine.

Oh well- now I get a few more months to do the upgrades needed to play my 2nd most wanted game next year:)

Vanguard is upcoming junk just like 99% of the rest of them all are. Bunch of rehashed Everquest trash.

    Exactly.

Vanguard uses 1 large world instead of many maps using the Unreal 2.5 engine.  Its going to be a processor hog.  Your Sempron 2800 is less then 2ghz and can't be overclocked.  So thats the limiting factor.  Also 256 mb ramm was 3 years ago for a game.  Not you should try and get 1 GB to play well on a game.  1 GB DDR costs about $100.

Gravity rescently had the same problem with RO2 using the Unreal 2.x engine.  The system specs were too high.  So they completely re-coded the engine to meet thier requirements for a year.  Vanguard might have to do the same thing if it the same case.  If they don't it will severely limit thier playerbase.  The average current PC has 2.4ghz processor, 512 MB ram, and shader 2.0 support Graphics card.

SOE hosts, markets with our invovement, and will distribute the game.  But it's Sigil's game -- we own it and we call the shots.

    Exactly.

Hopefully everything good about EQ 1 and its predecessors, MUDs, plus addressing EQ 1 and other game's mistakes, whether they be old games like EQ 1 or as new as WoW.  Plus, built on this solid foundation, all sorts of revolutionary features, ways to advance your character, immersive next generation world, etc.  Check this page out for the info you need to know it's NOT 'just another EverQuest clone'.

Hello Brad.  What kind of Janitor did you hire to clean up Vanguard.  Most of the textures look really clean.  He is doing a good job even scraping the barnicles from the pier.  Does he use some type of extra strength chemical solevent, because if he is then it may pose a danger to the wildlife that feeds off the sea.

My biggest concern right now with VG is that the animations look very very clunky. The Environment looks amazing but when it comes to player combat actions and such its just... well bleh.

I really hope that changes before it's release cause if not ... in todays games, that is sort of an immersion killer.

We make art assets clean first, and then dirty them up later and make multiple versions of them.  So some of the world you see looks too clean or new or newly built, but that will change.  It's just our production methodology -- you build the 'perfect' model of a building or a brick or a bridge, etc. and then you make alternate versions of it, whether dirty, or old, or damaged, or influenced by magic, etc.
