WOW = Cocaine?

zollenzollen Member Posts: 351

With all the recent posts about WOW addicition and the upcoming expansion (more grind).. I would like to discuss the similarity between WOW and cocaine. The first 1-60 leveling is fun enough to get you hooked on WoW, then the raiding grind begin... Once you are hooked, you will keep playing it regardless of the quality of the game.. What do you think?

Eh, i wouldn't go so far as to saying people are hooked regardless of quality seeing as I left because pvp quality was going down, but I do think the game is overly addicting.
  • Its not truly addictive, it just encourages obsessive behavior.

Yeah, but I like the people who I play with. We clean MC and BWL and we raid AQ40 (till 5th boss) and Nax. Cocain ? No, I think the guild members keep me in game not a pvp or gears, sets or the fat loot!

I've seen many posts here where people quit at 60 because they didn't want to continue the grind of the raiding ect..

You could make the same argument about any MMO.

Whether it's gear, the next pvp challenge, obtaining more currency, etc., games lend themselves to additive natures. MMOs in particular, since they have no obtainable end.

I was thinking this myself recently but I also believe it can be 'addictive', the same way gambling is addictive to some people. It is built upon certain types of rushes(dopamine I think).

It's got squat to do with the game, and everything to do with the individual. If it weren't WoW, it'd be EQ2, or Alchohol, or Maury Povich, or Bowling. Playing a video game is addictive only if you let it become the primary focus of your life. Saying it is addictive is just another way for weak-willed jerk offs to avoid responsibility for their actions. And unlike cocaine, heroin, et all, you won't suffer from withdrawal if you log off the game, and stop playing.

On a different note, why is it acceptable for someone to spend 40+ hours a week playing a sport, and they're considered a 'hero'. but if you spend the equivalent time playing a video game, it's a terrible addiction, and you're a nerdy, geek, loser? Hell, the average person spends somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 hours a week watching tv, which is, frankly, less stimulating than a video game, but I don't see anyone comparing their 40" HDtv to snorting rails of crack off a hookers ass...

Yes well there are rushes and other mechanics.  Read up on how random rewards affects rats versus regular rewards and you have WoW(and other EQ clones) in a nutshell.  Instead of food it just a powertrip instead as the reward.

But humans have self awareness and eventually the hollowness of the reward system is inescapable.  Thus I stand by my previous statement.  Even the people who come back do it out of an obssessive need to occupy themselves they actually don't like or even think its a good experience.  They are in fact no longer getting any rushes.

But I can buy a six pack and drink it however I like.  There is not reason I need to ever go on a drinking binge.  If I want phat purple lootz I gotta binge drink just to get through the raid.  And that is how WoW is addictive, it causes alcoholism.

  • I quit and play off and on. Normaly I come back when my guild is looking for my class again. I take about 3-4 months off each year to relax away from the game since it does consume a lot of time.

They get paid millions for playing sports.  Unless you get paid like that while playing wow, you can't compare the two.
  • VawusVawus Member Posts: 6
Nice analogy, but umm lets see lol. The reason is its harder to be really good at sports because of the training, and working out and pain u must suffer thru, to be good in a game u gotta have dedication but mostly its sitting on ur ass and being good in sports means getting laid, being good in an mmorpg (many men online role playing girls) means the "girl" ur most likely talking to is a guy or some fat disgusting excuse for a woman. But as far as calling it an addiction, there is no blame on getting addicted to it other than the person getting addicted. It's ur own fault if you get addicted.

Same for people who get addicted to gambling no? I have no doubt some people's behaviour maybe similar to what you describe which I think stems perhaps from your own experiences, but I'm hesistant to apply to that to everyone and I am going to use the term 'addictive' for some people in the same way as gambling just it's not perhaps officially recognized in the same way because it is a game.

You didn't hear this from me, but...

Blizzard actually programs cocaine into the code of their games. It's true! I swear it!

A little harsh Coldmeat, these games do have a rather subtle way of pulling you in. For first time players to mmorps, on-line friends, guilds, pvp and questing are an enormous fun experience. After playing for a year or so (even when the glitter dulls) it can be quite hard to let go.
