That video impressed me even more than I already was! The boats, the dungeon, the mounts and the jaw dropping world, all just candy to me. Can't wait for this bad boy to release!
The narrating was sleep inducing but at least gave plenty of information. Sounded like they had tons to say but had to pick what they could in the time they had. I enjoyed the time sink it took to go through the video
Originally posted by phennexion They didnt mention it, but is houseing going to be like SWG Where people can plant the house where they want it and will there be player towns and cities? Will players get to craft the houses? I don't really like EQ2's idea of player housing. If i find a nice spot while im exploring and want to put my house there, it'll just mean that much more to me. I can't wait for vanguard tho
Yes, housing is said to be very much like in SWG. I haven't play it, though, so I'm not entirely familiar with housing in SWG, but I have read a lot on housing in VSoH. Housing in VSoH isn't like in EQ2. If you noticed they mentioned that there is zero instancing in VSoH, which includes housing.
Your house does have to be built on a predesignated plot, but these plots are scattered throughout the world rather than in apartment-like zones, and most of them are in clusters. There will definitely be player cities.
It won't quite be like in UO where you can build your house anywhere you can manage to squeeze it. You can't build right smack in front of a dungeon. I think that some plots are in dangerous areas, though, and they have said that they'd like to make it so monsters can attack your house (I don't remember if this was going to be in launch, but it makes PvP servers sound interesting), but I have no idea how they'd implement something like that. I think they said that you can build guard towers or something like that.
Player housing is one of the things that really draws me to this game.
Just think of running your own shop. You have all your weapons on shelves in your house, and someone comes in and says, "I'd like that one," so you take it off the shelf and hand it to them. Of course, crafting is a whole nother story for a whole nother time.
Or maybe you decide to run your own tavern (in a player city, too), and every time you close, you take all the chairs and turn them upside-down on the tables. Then when anyone looks in the window, they can see all the chairs on the tables, and they'll tell their friend, "Looks like we're too late. They already closed."
EDIT: I found a whole section of their official FAQ dedicated to housing. It turns out I didn't make up that part about monsters attacking your house!
Still sounds to me like they are out of touch and not making any sense. For example the comments on instancing, what are they going on about? Just because you're in an instance doesn't mean you're cut off from the world outside, if someone leaves you in a WoW instance you put out a request for another and they join their group. Why are they acting like this is a massive problem in games that use instances?
Frankly for roleplayers, instance gaming can be a god send when all you wanna do is run a few quests with your friends roleplaying as you go without having to put up with "zgomz y r u talkin funnie?".
Having said that this video did show me what I wanted to know, the game will be massive in terms of land and water mass and I will be playing it, but I'm this close to walking away from MMORPGs for good and maybe even PC gaming so I hope it's worth playing.
Been a long time since I've wanted a game right now! After beta testing some major bombs...SB and Horizons the big winners of that catagory, I've soured on any new game. Everything that is fed to you is designed to hook you without any real bait. VSOH is changing my viewpoint that there are still quality developers and producers in the online gaming industry that wants to give you value for the money you're going to spend each month.
While I see some things, that can be improved on (combat is standard looking), I really don't care with the main course and desert being so spectacular. I like a huge world, which is why I didn't play DDO after beta. I want to explore, find odd out of the way locations. Housing anywhere? Wonderful! I don't want an insta location for my home. I want travlers to ride/fly/sail by it. The incentive for levels (which I"ve come to despise) is there. I want my house, my ship, my unusual mount. I am not a big loot hound, just enough to get me by so this gives me a reason to be in those dungeons. To put those really nice candlesticks on the table a friend made. I've never had a ship ..well I did in DaoC but I hated operating it, so if it's similar interface someone else is going to have to be captain.
I also feel it was very cool that Sigil wasn't afraid to show the public what they are producing before it's out of beta. That shows the pride they are taking in designing this game.
wow, this game looks frikkin' amazing. I'm glad they put emphasis on how you can play in shorter time-bursts, like 2-3 hours a day, and it sounds like they know people want to experience good online gaming without giving up their life to see it all.

I don't recall seeing any fanboi type linkage in his sig for or against a game. And breaching a NDA doesn't make his a liar. It may make him dishonest but dishonesty is different from lying. Someone can have the best intentions when they first enter any contract then finally break said contract for the betterment of the people around them. Simple fact is the VSoH fanbois are the most rabid fanbois to ever exist. Many have been anti SOE anti WoW and talk about how this game is going to 'save' MMO's. Simple fact it's not going to. It'll have a following and playerbase that'll play it until it gets tedious.
And all the 'good stuff' people can get and do is spin. Those who tear through the game in a decent raiding guild will see all the fruit. Those who don't have that ability will get cast offs. You'll end up with plots of land unable to onsell. Boats that appear similar to everyone else since you won't get the good drops that'll allow for some great customization.
Yes it'll be performance heavy. Tney're banking on this game taking them through the next few years. DX10 is coming. With a whole lot of new capabilities. They'll be attempting to 'future-proof their gfx as much as possible. EQ now appears to be crap gfx. VSoH doesn't want that. I don't really see anything groundbreaking here. Appears to be the same old grind. And while I'm not a liar I'm pretty sure I have the capability to be dishonest.
oh and for those who aren't aware/ Anarchyarts 4519 posts in less then two years may not make him a troll. But old adages definitely have some truth to them. Now what is the one about empty vessels...

Out of touch? No different view of what a MMORP is about.
Instancing cuts you off from the real world. Combat locking is another example.
Why play a MMORP if your seperated from anyone else (but your party)?
Some of my best experiences in MMORP have been helping people in trouble, or groups running into each other in a dungeon and chatting or helping each other out.
One of the biggest problems with Instancing is getting the person to the instance (which can be painful) then getting them through the dungeon to the point the party is at.
Safe areas and communication with everyone in and around the dungeon area is vital for getting another person for the group quickly.
WoW is bloody aweful if you dont have a Warlock and someone leaves. You either all go back to the start or you pick a class that has stealth (druid/rogue).
As for roleplayers, most (in my experience) prefer no instancing as its destroys immersion.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS) Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
Just to clear any possible misconceptions on these points, as per the currently released info:
1. You don't need a super-computer to run the game. As long as vid card can do shader 2.0 and you have sufficient RAM (1 gb to what I've heard) you can run it at low settings.
2. Housing isn't instanced, but won't exactly be "free". You have to buy a plot on which you can then build the house/shop/whatever. Players cities not in at launch, but sometime post-launch.
3. I doubt anyone sees instancing as a "massive" problem. Sigil just found a way to do better than instancing.
4. Every MMO combat, especially at low levels, can be played whack-a-mole style -- maybe at low levels because you have but a few skills, maybe at higher levels if you don't know how to play it. VG will encourage you not to play that style, but rather to get to know your enemy, environement, items, etc. and take advantage of it. This will become even more apparent in group situations (solo fighting is and always will be less complex by definition).
lol he has less then 200 posts in 3 years and he's a troll?

Simple fact is the VSoH fanbois are the most rabid fanbois to ever exist.
Umm, ever heard of EVE? Simple fact is Vanguard is a target because of A) Brad McQuaid (creator of EQ, biggest MMO ever) and Sony Online Entertainment. If you are ignoring that, it kind of makes you a troll too. None of which is going to change the fact that Vanguard is going to rock and there's nothing you can do about it. Troll on you crazy diamond.

Sorry nothing you or they have said has made me feel that no instancing is this HUGE plus that I keep hearing about. Fact is, there are as many good reasons to have instancing as they are to not have it.
You talk about instancing destroying immersion but ignore the fact that waiting for 5 other people to kill the same boss mob kills immersion even more. I still don't see how they truly plan to stop this from happening, unless a Vanguard fan would like to point it out if I've missed it along the way.
You talk about instancing destroying immersion but ignore the fact that waiting for 5 other people to kill the same boss mob kills immersion even more.
You bring up a very good point. Neither exactly makes you feel immersed in a fantasy world. But what is more immersion killing, waiting for another group to kill a boss you are waiting for, or knowing that 17 other groups are currently killing the same boss you are fighting? For me, one copy of a dungeon that everyone has to get along and exist in is more immersive than every group getting their own private idaho. Just my opinion.
Plus, some of the best times I have had have been in EQ and UO dungeons where people are all in the same dungeon. Especially for PVP!

That can be swiched around, claiming that Vanguard gets hassle just because of Brad McQuaid and SOE really does make you a fanboi. Coir is right, I've never seen a more rabid set of fanbois, it started out funny and now it's just getting annoying and very very lame.

You make a perfectly good point anarchyart, but in a way that's my point as well. For me stood waiting for 5 other people to kill a boss that spawns is far far worse than entering an instance with a group that cuts me off from other people for half and hour. For someone else it might be the other way around.
I can put up with just about anything in a game but when I'm pestered for being a roleplayer it gets on my nerves and sometimes an instance run for fun with a group of roleplayers is the way to go for me.
The point that I'm making is that I'll buy the game with or without instance runs, I see the up and down sides to both BUT I really don't get why the "we don't have instancing" flag is being waved over and over again like it is this massive big deal.
There are just as many downsides to no instancing as there are upsides, what WOULD impress me is if they went into how they are going to combat the downsides while keeping the upsides. So unless I've missed this information I can't get that excited about a lack of instancing.

I agree with you on both points. Please keep it mind though that the game still has an average of 3-4 months of developement ahead of it and that they're currently reworking animations big time.

No. Claiming that Vanguard gets hassled because of B McQ and SOE makes me awake. And no, Coir is wrong, the WoW fanbois who troll Vanguard constantly are far more rabid because they troll a game, every day, that they DON'T EVEN LIKE!!!!! Also, see EVE.
who cares about trolls anyways I never take anyone seriouly that goes to a game forum and post I hate this game and im never going to play it , errr then why go to that games forum , this is not a flame about people making constructive comments or airing likes and dislikes about the game , thats all good and healthy , I just question the sanity and the persons social skills that goes onto something they claim they will never touch... I still think the idea of highlighting these posters somehow when they are secertly playing the game so people can point and laugh would be funny , they glow neon pink all the time but they cant see it
I'd like to say that the WoW fanboys are the worst, but that's only because I played EQ2 for so long and had to deal with "OMG DIS GAME SUX IM ONLI PLAYING KUZ WOW IS DOWN" syndrome. And I really don't like WoW, so it just rubbed salt in the wound.
I agree with previous posters that this is a great new thing for advertisement. Not everyone wants to be the guy who delves through hours of information just for that new little bit. I mean, I am, I've tried to find out everything I can about the game, but I want my friends to play this, and I'll now be sending this vid to everyone who I'm trying to convince. It's a nice summary, and if you combine it with the class rundown that was released that delves more into the individual combat mechanics of each class, it's an excellent way to summarize the game in its present state.
Combat looks fun itself, even if right now it doesn't look good on the outside. I have bad memories of PVP in EQ2 thanks to the attack range, and since a PVP server has been confirmed for Vanguard, I'm hoping they fix it up. I know they're paying very little attention to PVP, but I'm a PVP addict thanks to Ragnarok Online, so I'll probably be playing on that (ESPECIALLY if they make a RPvP server).
Overall, great new vid. I can't wait to get me one of those Galleons (sp).
I watched this video and seeing how they originally created EQ in the first place to me it matters not what they say. Its an EQ2 world graphically. As far as what they have said on thier website about Economy and such, i personally believe that this game will eventually become EQ with housing options. (Which they both said they were going to add in to EQ at one point) This game is just another SOE Raiding only game keep up or fall behind. Perhaps not at the start up but it will as in all SOE games so become that way.
I don't think Brad is tired, some people's normal voice sounds abit "tired" or "sluggish". A guy in my old guild's teamspeak chat had a voice like that (omg I might have played EQ2 with Brad McQuaid )
As for the graphic lag I expect they built the graphic engine to last a few years, so the best computer today probably can't play it with everything on high.

The combat does still looks stiff as a board though =(

I agree with you on both points. Please keep it mind though that the game still has an average of 3-4 months of developement ahead of it and that they're currently reworking animations big time.
Everquest, with over 10 expansions, is the biggest MMORPG ever. Big, as in large, not as in bajillions of subscribers.:D
Also as an aside, no Everquest=no World of Warcraft. They basically borrowed the entire game, but I digest.
who cares about trolls anyways I never take anyone seriouly that goes to a game forum and post I hate this game and im never going to play it , errr then why go to that games forum , this is not a flame about people making constructive comments or airing likes and dislikes about the game , thats all good and healthy , I just question the sanity and the persons social skills that goes onto something they claim they will never touch...
