Err, I did not say that you need prophecies to play factions or nightfall.
I said "you need the base game" to play any of the 3 partsl, meaning, they are all 3 based on the same base game code.
Oh and juicebox, you carefully avoid my question. If Everquest would be repackaged as "Everquest Classic + Expansion X" x 12 times. What would be different between that and 3 guildwars packages?
Lets pick at those now.
I answered the first one.. why would a company change its coding, graphics, etc from game to game? Why oh why are all the other games out there like that... same reason all mcdonalds are set up the same. Its marketing and comfort to keep your clients. Walk into one mcdonalds, you've walked into them all. Size may be different, one may not have a play place!... but all in all, mcdonalds is mcdonalds... worldwide. ITS SMART BUSINESS!!
Secondly, everquest is packaged like that.
Everquest Trillogy (original and two expansions)
Everquest eveolution (original and a few more expansions)
Everquest Titanium (original and more expansions)
See the pattern? They're giving you the original GAME in each box set. Not the base code bullshit you want to focus on, but the WHOLE GAME ITSELF! There's a reason for that... oh yeah.. its so the EXPANSIONS can be played and you aren't sitting there with your thumb up your ass, wondering why oh why when I installed an EXPANSION without the original, can I not play it?
Seriously.. am I just crazy or are you completely missing the point? Have any more questions you'd like me to demolish, or ya good now?
Originally posted by Death'sHand Fair enough, I understand they're seperate campaigns and not expansions, with each having it's own merit. But hypothetically if everyone were to follow GW's game model then the game list would be even more adversely effected than it already is. I am wondering how that can be justified?
I do understand your point Death, and again, it's just simply my opinion on it being able to take 3 spots on the rankings. You do make a point though about everyone following it.. it would be a mess, and like I stated, it may turn people away that they have to pay $70+ (i'm canadian.. i pay more than you americans for my games here ) but they made a choice of how to market it and sell it, and its obviously paying off (not basing that on the rankings list here) and no I really don't care how much they've made compared to WoW or any other mmo.
I don't change my stance on it, but I'm sure if every other company started to do the same thing, I'd call it rediculous and change my stance of saying it should be allowed up there 3 times. But for now, since they are (to my knowledge because I could care less at this point) the only ones doing it, I say all the power to them!
Originally posted by darktravesty I agree, there shouldn't be three damn copies of the game up there. Leave room for other games that don't have a strange system for making expansions.
because this game with a strange system of releasing stand-alones you and others talk is not the norm in other games that they be excluded from the list?
Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished
Okay, so Guild Wars are stand alone games and EQ's expansions are stand alone expansions.
So :
For Guildwars Prophecies you need to buy Guildwars Prophecies, nothing else.
For Guildwars Nightfall you need Guildwars Nightfall, nothing else.
For Ruins of Kunark you need EQ classic + Ruins of Kunark.
For Shadows of Luclin you need EQ classic + Shadows of Luclin.
etc
So while the base game is not included with the expansion in EQ, you can buy and play each expansion seperatly.
If EQ would bundle these, then it would be the same as guildwars.
Okay you are right, it is not.
But that does not warrant the listing and ranking of guildwars 3 times, cause it is still the same online world we are talking about. Just different regions, backstory, etc, just the same as with expansions in normal mmorpg's.

But GW isn't bundled...
Look, Im not a mean person, and never intended to be mean about this. But seriously. I don't disagree with you that GW has the same base code, but as I said.. what game doesn't? Again it's just smart business. You don't think that the way people play WoW right now, are going to zone through that dark portal into the expansion and find a brand new WoW with no similarity to its original do you?
Its just smart business and common sense to keep the same base coding. Again, I'm not saying I disagree, but simply because a game has the same base coding, doesn't make it an expansion... which is what MY argument has been about.
I think it is important for GuildWar's chapters to be listed seperately because they can be bought separately. Let's face it, should I go to the store to buy EQ or WoW or whatever, I'd be sure to start with the original game because this is the founding stone of the whole serie and everything will be based on it. Where as if I were to go buy Guild War I would have to chose between the 3 version. So, I would assuredly not spend 150$ on games I have never played and would only chose 1 of them. The rating help me know which one is a better investment of my money.
You may argue about EQ + 1 expansion but let's face it, if I go to the store I'd better either buy all of them or the latest bundle package. I would never consider buying ruin of kunark only when I could get titanium which include all expansion released to know including kunark.
To make a good analogy, traditional MMORPG are like a book triology: it doesn't make sense to start with anything but the first book. Guild Wars however is more like 3 different book/stories in the same setting: there is no logical start in the three book. Therefore as a customer, in the first case I would simply buy the book 1 of 3 and thus need only a rating for the triology whereas in the second case I would need a rating for each of the three books to know with which one to start.

Couldnt have said it better myself. Great analogy! To everyone that thinks its unfair I have just three words for you: GET OVER IT! Just because its not your same old grind of an mmorpg doesnt mean you have to pick at it at every turn. What it comes down to is simple: GW fans and competent players think its fair, those who dont care for guild wars or dont like thier cookie cutter mmorpg challanged dont think its fair.
Originally posted by CyberWiz read my post above ... Guild wars DOES need the original game. The only difference is that the base game and the expansion are integrated and sold as 1. So like I said before, if Everquest would package their classic game + expansion X then it would be a standalone game. Then they repackage all and they have 12 standalone games. So do you agree that 12 packages of Everquest ( EQ classic + Expansion X ) would be the same as the 3 packages of guildwars, and if not, why not?

Either you consider Guildwars as an mmorpg ( or close enough to be on this site ), and as 1 online world, then you can have it on this site, but only rate it once.
OR
You say it is just an online RPG as diablo, and then you can rate it 3 times but not on this site.
Probably the only fair solution would be to let it have seperate entries on the site, but not on the Top7, there you should take the average of the 3.
But perhaps this might be too much work for mmorpg.com
It will be funny when GuildWars ranks nr 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7 on the top 7.
Thing is, the GuildWars fans will review all 3 guildwars ( or 7 when more come out ) basically the same.
So if they like it at some point and rate it high, then all the packs will be rated high.
Same goes for City of Heroes / City of Villains.
