CoX would probably be a lot more fun if they gave the Hamidon enhancements as pvp rewards (this way people dont have to raid the same old instance over and over). Instead, would've been nice if they woulda focused the end game effort on pvp for the hardcore role players that wish to stick with their toons. I just noticed _Castle_ once again promise Brutes a fix to fury. I'm interested in how that will turn out.
looking forward to the next gen MMOs that will try to eliminate raiding (fury, conan) or guarantee the same rewards from PvP. WoW comes really close but unfortunately the honor system is a bigger grind if you trying to reach warlord
I have now played both. I left CoX to play WoW and am now starting to really yearn for CoX again. The biggest reason is the community. I find the vast majory of players in WoW to be jackasses and immature punks. Anyone that has sat in the Barrens and read the chat there knows EXACTLY what I'm talking about. I DO enjoy gathering equipment to make my character better, but the 40 man raids are just a pain in the butt. You get 40 people and have to try and organize them? its a nightmare. And then when you do take down X Boss, your chances of getting something are low, unless you raid all the time and earn up points.
One of the biggest negatives for WoW, at least for me, is travel time. I find that I'm traveling from point A to poitn B 70% of the time. Sure I CAN fight along the way, but then it takes forever to get to where your going. You do get a mount at lvl 40, but damn, thats a long grind. In CoX you can have a travel power by lvl 14. Anyone that has played CoX will agree that the game gets MUCH better once you get a TP.
WoW is a great game, and fun to play, but after a few months I'm starting to get a little bored of it to be honest. The biggest reason is what I talked about before travel time. Its just such a grind to run from place to place. CoX has its faults, but its a faced paced, action oriented and lootfree game.
I think I just talked myself into renewing tonight. GL

All the MMOs right now are really all just major grind from what I've seen (WoW, CoX, EQ2 well only level 18 in EQ2 so my opinion doesnt count much there). Ya, because a free game with no content is better than GW. All Guild Wars is is a haven for noobies that can't afford online fees, all the PvP is rock paper scissors.

Um, maybe you should try reading my signature before replying to me. Btw, Guild Wars isn't an MMO. Anyone with a brain knows this it says so on their front page. Not sure why you trying to bring that up?
And just because you don't like Guild Wars doesn't make the PvP suck lol. Obviously thousands of hardcore pvpers disagree with you. The entire game was built around pvp. But since you tried to take it there, unlike your post I'll point out the facts:
- Guild Wars was built for PvP. You can respec your character at anytime. In CoX they have limited respecs. Many players keep asking Cryptic for a flexible system that lets them have a pvp build and PvE build at sametime. But Cryptic has ignored their cries. GW doesn't suffer from such poor design. You can instantly swap out your powers so there is no need for a 'PvE' build. GW offers 100% ability to configure your toon
- In order to fully enjoy Guild Wars, you must participate in a 'Guild War'. The random 5v5 arenas aren't considered the real pvp in this game
-CoX loses thousands of subscribers a month. It is now down to 171k. Guild Wars has millions of players (edit: well millions of copies sold). You'll always be able to join a competition. You only wait 30 seconds - 2 mins max. CoX pvp zones are basically ghost towns. Only Siren's Call gets decent traffix, a LEVEL 30 Zone. So, players have to build min/max builds for a LEVEL 30 ZONE.
-The organized pvp is Arena in CoX. Certain SGs get together and try to fight other SGs. I've done this with my SG. Most players switch from Villains to Heroes because Cryptic made the pvp so unbalanced. Guild Wars doesnt suffer from this because there is no 'hero vs villain'
-Many SGs have quit CoX and transfered to WoW. Others, like I said before, rerolled heroes like LOTD. The serious SGs like Freaks of LEgend will bring Heroes to Arena events. The Devs dropped the ball on Villain Patron powers. Thus, Villains are way weaker then Heroes. This is fact, not opinion. No Villain SG can hope to beat a Hero SG that bring Radiation Defenders and ice/em blasters. Villains simply cant deal with the spike.
-Guild Wars gives players 150 powers to choose from. CoX only gives players 24 powers. It takes about countless hours and grind to hit max in CoX. In Guild Wars you can play a toon at level cap.
-Both games are heavily instanced. However, Guild Wars is considered an 'Online RPG' versus CoX which they label 'MMO'. However, in reality CoX players are really just running around in the same instances over and over. You CANNOT hit Level 50 w/o farming instances or doing repititive content in CoX. In Guild Wars, you can hit level cap without repeating a single instance
-Guild Wars doesn't suffer from Flavor-Of-The-Month like CoX does. It takes so long to level in CoX, players try to create min/max builds. Their leveling system is too static to support a robust pvp system. Additionally, the Devs have stated numerous times in interviews their focus is on PvE because the vast majority of their players is PvE only. Only a fool would try to assume CoX is a PvP game. It's not, PvP was tacked on in Issue 4 (Arena)
-Guild Wars has a ladder system and records matches from the top guilds. GW has a strong, competitive atmosphere. If you want a community then you need to join a guild because people not in your guild are your enemies, literally. Guild Wars is NOT an MMORPG. It's a Competitive RPG. If you want a carebear community then you might want to look elsewhere. GW isn't really a strong social experience. Personally, I had a strong social experience in WoW (played it with my real life friends) however WoW isn't for everyone. But I can guarantee you WoW has millions more subscribers then CoX. Like a real MMO should, WoW grows every month. Don't take my word for it, check the ncsoft quarterly reports.
-In order to reach your full potential in CoX you must hit LEVEL 50 plus raid for Hamidon enhancements. In order to get Hami-Os it takes hours for the chance to get the drop you want. So, you're looking at raiding the same content over and over just to get a fair shot at another player using your same Archtype. GW does not suffer from such poor design, when you create a max toon you get all the top gear. You do not have to farm the same content over and over to get a fair shot to PvP. GW is based on skill, not hours played
-Your post sounded realy newbish talking about how GW pvp is rock-paper-scissors. Show me an MMO whereas this doesn't take place. MMOs are about TEAMs, not about you. If you dont like rock-paper-sciccors in pvp then you need to go play an FPS shooter like Unreal or Quake whereas everyone is the same (no classes).
Anyway feel free to reply to my post with more inaccuracies (and biased opinions) but really anyone that has fully pvp'ed in both games extensively like I have will recognize the blatant facts presented in my post

That's just me though. Your mileage may vary.

Wow Wow for me is like real life you get up in the morning and go to work and grind the day out. Taking on one enemy at the time if you're lucky you will go and buy gold to make you take on two enemies. wow in my opinion is uninspiring mundane mind numbing crap. Spend nine months of your life just grinding and going into battle ground for what? I believe that it is worse than a prison sentence. Mind you if you are unemployed maybe you have the intellectual capacity to put up with it. As you can tell I do not like this game.
City OF Heroes You come home from work you load up login with your level 41 stone tank grab seven of your other fellow heroes and kick pure ass. There is not a better feeling than having 25 enemies surround you and try to kick your ass with no effect. Then you click on your area of effects power and you watch how much damage you have just cause which makes you feel like a hero. Then you just watch all your enemies fall around you helpless and incapacitated. Then you get to the archvillain and pound your guts out until he has been arrested. You then sit back and think wow that was so much better than wow.
Come back once you have been dancing in Atlas Park for several years.
Still, much better than raiding! Once you are bored, you log and you are still happy with the game since you don't lose precious loot, DKP, or anything. Dancing in Atlas Park has no heavy obligation on you, you may quit or resume as often as you want, with no negative impact on the remaining of the game, not suffering any ill consequences in the grouping gameplays because you dance enought or too little. You may even cancel subscribtion, but still be happy with the game. When you come back, you are not hopeless, you get back where you left and you are still full of potential, positive thinking...and HAPPY!
As soon as they will add something interesting, or release another game (such as Marvel MMO), I will buy it will very little restraint, trusting them. Not something that is going to happen for most MMOs companies these days, as I will request warranty that it won't end in some lame PvP/Raiding ways.

CoX pvp zones are basically ghost towns. Only Siren's Call gets decent traffix, a LEVEL 30 Zone. So, players have to build min/max builds for a LEVEL 30 ZONE.
Well, Siren's calls is a mistake. They ENFORCE PvP on players who just want PvE rewards. And min/max for a level 30 zones has no negative impact on the min/max for 50ish zones...since you can't place the 31+ enhancement slots there...so you just change the order in which you pick your powers...
- "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. " - Ren
I know it's kind of pointless to say this now, but I think you would of been better of with CoH.
The loot point is a good one. WoW is fast paced but it's alot like a single potato chip, you can eat it fast but there's not alot of gratifcation to it. If you're really hunger you'll end up eating alot of chips. CoH is more like a steak, it's way more rewarding especially if you are hungry. Basically, potato chips are easy to snack on and WoW is easy to play but you shouldn't try to make a snack into a meal.
As for community, it's the worst one out there. And WoW does not have items a la Final Fantasy. I mean, I'm an adventurer. I was to quest for the legandary sword of Cortez. In WoW finding such a sword will take me a litteral lifetime, I'll end up buying it first.
Like I said, large community/=/Good community. If you get a bunch of water fromm all of the place(Canadian Spring, Pittsburg, Dejion France, Milwake Beer Manufactury Run-off), than it is not going to equal the flavor of a fresh montain spring :P
Personaly, WoW crafting was lame. I wanted to be a miner and a metalsmith so I could make my own weapons. What I ended up doing was was taking mining(as you can have only 1 proff till level 320924*10^340304), mining ore, making it into bars and than selling it. It probably would of been more fun if mines were epic. Instead they remind me alot of CoH instanced but with weird rat-things and spider instead of criminals(downgrade) and random ore deposites instead of a huge XP bounis(downgrade)
Talents are really lame compared to CoH abilities. Most of the time the abilites are things like "With this skill your target will take DoT 20% of the time" or "with this ability your dodge rate will increase 1%!" It's the kind of stuff I feel should be left to levels ups. Also, unlike CoH, WoW's abilities are tiered. In CoH, all you ever need is fireball, you get that once and then you can move onto other abilities. In WoW, you need fireball, then fireball 2 then greater fireball, ect. and so-forth. Sure, WoW levels faster, but you get pretty much the same overall reward for your time.
On a side note, WoW's community can't hold a candlestick to CoH's.
I could not agree more. I left WoW on part because of the stupidity I saw every day. The community I saw was roughly divided halfway between noobs who asked questions you find answered in the manual and the elite long time players who felt that their time spent playing somehow made their opinions the only ones that mattered. Sure, WoW has a playerbase about the size of New York City, but I pick the CoH community hands down. The WoW community was immature at best and devoid of any intelligence whatsoever at worst. City of Heroes has a tighter-knit community. The game isn't perfect, but the feedback between developers and players is excellent because the developers actually listen. They explain WHY the make certain choices that affect gameplay (like the infamous Issue 5 nerf, which, in my opinion, made things better) and take player comments and criticism to heart. The players mean so much more to the developers because there are fewer of them. It will be a sad day if City of Heroes shuts down (though Earth: Above and Beyond is the only MMO I've seen take such a turn in my lifetime as I recall, and being as high-ranked as it is, I can't imagine that happening until some time after CoH2 comes out).

good points.
i come back to cox about every issue, sometimes it's for a month, sometimes for several. sometimes just to try out the new powersets (which i8 won't have!!!!). but wow.... the only time i went back, was to try out the changes to BGs.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
Guild Wars: Take Dungeon Siege, mix in amazing graphics, and there you are. Pretty to look at, and fun for a while, but for the long term...hrm. For me it wasn't a good investment. I still have the shortcut on my desktop, but it's been gathering dust.
WOW: I tried the free trial. I just could not get past the cartoonish graphics. Elves with three foot ears, garish colors, and a bazillion choices. Lord.
COX: I was hooked from the get go! Great Sound! Power effects! Costumes! and FREE expansions! And now with the free rewards for playing. What more could you ask for. Of course all this is just my take, but there are few superhero mmos and about a trillion fantasy mmos.
It really isn't fair of me to compair them with each other. They are so vastly different in game play. COX is fun right out of the box, yes , there is leveling, but Istill get intrested in My character. I think that NC did it right. No wonder they will also be doing the Marvel mmo.
I'd stay with CoH over WoW if I were you. It sounds like that's what you're leaning towards anyway by what you're listing as important. CoH has a better community and plenty of fighting action for my taste!
You are spot on! You don't have to wait to get to the fun stuff! Last night made my first winged character. Darque Wing. I saw some characters flying around Atlas Park! I have to agree with you about the community. COX is very diverse! Read the Wikipedia article about it and you will see.
Just goes to show...Size doesn't matter. WOW has more subcribers, but it doesn't mean it's the best.
Personally I enjoyed the questing and travelling in WoW though the end game requiring 20-40 man raids is uncalled for and quite possibly the worst idea ever. Some of my friends left WoW for CoH and want me to join them. However CoH left a bad taste in my mouth with all the idiots running around with customes and names close to heroes from comics. Granted I have not played this game since about its 4 th month of release. I have heard great things but am still leary due to my early experience. Also I wish it was a little more solo friendly I don't mind grouping but sometimes i would not mind going off on my own and actually getting stuff done.
I would give COX another try. The first four months on any MMORPG is bound to have it's glitches. There has been tons of upgrades and power editions since you last played. You can solo in COX. The Master Mind in City of Villians is perfect for that! The Corrupter is a good build to solo. In COH you can try the Defender class. Self heals and buffs and debuffs. Just take it slow. With the addion of Supergroups and bases it's easier than ever to join a team. The Community is great. Friendly and helpful.
If you need to get stuff done on your own (lone hero or malajusted villian) there are independant missions you can get on both COH (police scanner) and COV (the paper). Finish a mission and jump right ino another right away! Do enough of them and you will gain the notice of a contact that will give you a mayhem mission in COV or a protecting missoin in COH. These should be done in teams as they can be very hard. But they are a BLAST! I love them.
And don't forget about the costumes! With every new update there are more and more additions to the costume database! Wings are now available to people who play long enough! Vetean rewards is just that. The reward you for playing! The longer you play the more rewards you get! Bonus powers, items, costume pices and more!
I would give it another try. Paragone City needs you!
Ive played both games and each one has its pros and cons.
CoH/V is a great game for people that dont care to team. A vast majority of missions from 1 to 45 are easily done by yourself. But after that the AV mission; which become very frequent need teams to complete. If you wish to find a team its very easy also. The one thing that the game really lacks is that end game for your 50s. Once you get there you have very little to do. Sure you can raid the Hamidon and earn the enhancements but that gets really old and tiresome; dealing with alot of people you may be unfamiliar with can get frustrating. Of recent they have given us the ability to do Police Band Mission and Safeguards but after a ny length of time that will begin to grow old. That is truely one of the biggest defects of the game (to me at least). There are alot of other things to do in game, PvP (which is no where near as fun as in WoW), badge collecting, and milling around AP passing out influence. Or you could just sit in your ultra cool base and wait for the SG Trial to go online.
As for WoW, its a very fun game. Very immersive and plenty to do. The PvP is a good time (either through battlegrounds or open field). One of my favorite parts of the game is the whole loot concept. I actually miss that now that Im back playing CoH/V. Cant tell you how many times I have defeated and enemy, ran over to the body, nothing...so sad. Teaming can be a bit frustrating in the game, for the whole possibility of loot stealers and such but if you can find a good guild then you can drastically cut down on that chance. The end game in WoW provides alot to do. Seems each update gives a new dungeon, new armors, weapons, and host of other cool items. Earning respect with different factions is whole other aspect as well. Though tedious sometimes your efforts pay great dividends.
I love CoH/V just as much as I love WoW but at times you need to take a break from one or the other. I am back to playing CoH/V and its just as great as the 1st time I played the game. I plan to go back to WoW but not sure. I miss some parts of that game. I read somewhere prior you took CoH/V, I hope you are enjoying it.
I really am enjoying playing both COH/COV. It's great to be evil and then the next day be nice. I've started a new hero character. A mutant defender called Darque Wing. He is in the SG Acendence, a SG of bad turned good heroes. Playing a winged character is great! I'm really gunning for lvl 14 so I can take flight. I love the sounds of the wings flapping. I've seen some really creative uses of the new costumes and veteran rewards. But to be honest I've been playing EVE more than anything. Oops...wrong forum for that!
To anwser your quest- you can pvp in CoX as soon as level 15 (booty bay). It can be fun too if siren's call / bb is jumping. just try it yourself. Recluse victory was a huge let down for me at the most only saw like 8 heroes max even on a saturday on my server liberty. maybe you'll have some better luck on Freedom or Virtue. I think I did hear even those more poopulated servers had ghost towns at high levels but I cant be certain cause I was on liberty.

Anyway for me city of heroes will slash over wow

It's hard to fight in a gazebo.

good points.
i come back to cox about every issue, sometimes it's for a month, sometimes for several. sometimes just to try out the new powersets (which i8 won't have!!!!). but wow.... the only time i went back, was to try out the changes to BGs.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Im currently deciding to either resub to WoW, or CoX (with a new char).
Im a PvP addict, i love it. If i started up WoW again, my character is already 60, all geared out, ready to pvp.
When can i PvP in CoX? Tough decision.
I just resubbed to WoW for a month, and the first thing that happens. Some guy starts dancing with me and saying all these sexual things...
Needless to say, CoH here i come!!!!! Just 1 hour and 30 minutes til its done patching.
