BIGTIME BUMMED about my Playstation 3 reservation! ARGH!

I wanted a PS3. They started taking pre-orders last January. January 4th of this year back when a spring '06 launch was still the story was when I officially plopped down $636.00 of my hard earned money to reserve a PS3 at my local Game Crazy store. Been told for over nine freakin' months I was for sure gonna get mine. Now I get a call and because I was #3 in line, they only got ONE in. They expected 6. They gone freakin' ONE!

They said that the Sony rep told the store manager that Sony's promised 400,000 units shipped to the USA has been cut to only 134,000 total units. Yikes! I called two more Game Crazy stores in my local area to confirm this BS. Both stores managers I talked to repeated exactly the same news to the T. They didn't say to 130,000. They all said "134,000".

This has to be the worst game system launch ever! First spring '06 release promised world wide and they don't back out until like freakin March or April and announce November. They PROMISED 400,000 and likely more by launch. I have read article after article that they were on pace for the promised 400,000 coming directly from Sony.

Now 134,000. Talk about total BS. And my local Game Crazy has had $640 of my money for ten damn months and I still ain't getting nuttin' but the run around.

Weren't 360s also hard to come by around their launch and for months after that? I remember no stores here in suburban DC had them reliably for months.

I don't play console games much, but I've come to believe that this "undersupply" tactic is a marketing technique for consoles. By keeping them rare, they keep demand high, and they also limit the number of units that are in circulation until there is more software to support them.

I feel for you bro... I really do! Saying that, WTF do you expect from Sony? It isn't like this company is known for quality or keeping their word on anything. This is the company known for breaking the law with privacy invasion and illegal copy write protection schemes. This is the company that did the notorious NGE disaster to SWG. Why would you reward them $636 for their game system and the pleasure to play $60-$70 for their games that you can beat in 20 hours or less?

Again, I really feel sorry for you... at the same time all I can recommend is /cry more

Isn't it amazing that these ebay power sellers with their online stores and such have their stock yet your store doesn't have your system for you. I'm telling you, these "suppliers" that distribute to gamestop and such know they can make a LOT of money selling on ebay. Someone is going to have a very Merry Chistmas. Unfortunately, it won't be you.

Sony completely bombed the launch of the Playstation 3. too little units, MONTHS behind the release of the Xbox360 and European release of the playstation 3 is delayed untill MARCH 2007. After being a Playstation fan for years, My money is going to Xbox360.

Honestly did anyone expect anything less from Sony? From SWG, to batteries, to PS3. I'm surprised anyone would be surprised that this actually happened. Been a bad streak for Sony. I remember when Sony=best quality. I sure wouldn't say that right now. Anymore when I say a Sony product, I stay away from it like the plague. It might be unfair but I think they have lost their goodwill and can't be trusted anymore.

Their stock price had a small 1-3% pop due to ps3 release, barely noticible. Kind of shows how confident their buyers are about the system..

ps3 isn't worth it

A.) you can get 2 very differnt game consuls, the best game or two for ea. and an extra controler for each.

B.) its system setup makes it a pain to develop for, thus games more annoying to develope for and upset devs=bad games(buggier, less gets in for deadline, more expesive)

C.) blue ray disks while holding more data take much longer to load. if
sony doesn't pull some fancy junk(making it harder to develope for),
the game will take 20-30 mins to load.

D.) blue ray is locked down by sony, making it a bad format. and from sony's history their previous locked down formats have never gotten anywhere.(technically shouldn't hurt the system, but it annoys me)

E.) sony has reduced the number of systems in my cryptic future site, as they know its buggy and by reducing the # of systems there are less to replace/fix.

F.) they are going to allow you to have a key board and mouse... bye bye shooters and the only point for playing them on the consul.... the controler limits you in ways, and the people you are playing with.

G.) the only game that you can't find similar else where would be final fantasy, and possiabley the metal gear/suicide gear

Are you kidding? Sony is just doing what many companies have learned. People eat this stuff up. Hard to get the PS3? It must be worth it.

Until people, like OP, stop reserving up front and waiting to see the goods on the shelf for a while (30 days or more), they can and will keep using this marketing trick to get you to be an drooling fool. But no, people want to be the first on the block to have it. Why?

I don't believe Sony really wanted to limit supply. I think the quantity demanded for the product is really high now, especially right before Christmas. The demand in the future (thus quantity demanded) will shift downwards. Sony is going to lose money. There are already 2 viable alternatives and both cost less. Microsoft is far more experience when it comes to computer software. It would stand to reason xbox live would be far superior than what Sony could produce. Nintendo has the innovative Wii controller plus a plethora of retro Nintendo games available for the Wii. It's also going to be about 1/3 the price of a PS3.

Granted there will be those that will buy a PS3 no matter what. PS3 may also have the best graphics of new systems. Still the lack of supply is going to kill Sony (andchan also will decrease demand). I'll say this, if Sony can get theiir consoles out by a reasonable time before Christmas they will probably do all right. Yet they have already delayed the release of PS3 for a year and given Microsoft a headstart with xbox 360 (which has improved since release). In the last few months HD-DVD has gained momentum as the standard for videos. They are cheaper and have a bigger selection. Mess up here and it may take Sony a long time to recover. Personally I think the PS3 is way too expensive for what you get.

Ive known several people to work computer retail

I remember buying the x-box when it came out through an employee EB who was a friend of mine and having him "specially reserve" one for me. What happens is that the employees buy these things even before they give them to the pre-orders whether or not they put money down on them.

chances are they got enough PS3's, but the computer nerds at the shop bought them and the ones that didnt gave their friends a "special reserve".

I mean, after all.. these kids work in PC game retail. Theyre gamers just like us. If you had their job, wouldnt you feel that you deserved that pre-order PS3 more then some customer?

and by all means im not justifying whats going on, I think its BS. But if I still had this friend in retail PC games, I would have expected the same "friend" treatment.

Can you bash SOE? Yes. Can you bash the Playstation series? Not really IMO. Can you bash anything else Sony makes? I don't think so.

They have good quality products, aside from gaming stuff, almost all my electronics are Sony and they work so well it makes me want to cry at times. Just cause they fucked up on the PS3 release doesn't mean there should be an anti-Sony movement. Though I will agree SOE sucks ass.

Funny thing is. I will bet you any amount of money it's the stores that are putting those up for offer. They tell you hey yeah we'll take your pre-order. We plan to get in 10 PS3's. Near launch sorry we only are getting 1 shipped to us. Then they put the other 9 up on Ebay.

If I were you I would get a xbox 360. I was talking to guild mates the other day and we were comparing all of the systems. Hands down xbox 360 was the fav. You have to consider the pros and cons 1st. By far the playstation is the most expensive and I would imagine the first units sold will be bugged and prob overheat. Second, you have to realize to get anything worthwhile from the ps3, blueray has to become very popular. Im guessing though many ppl wont go for the pricetags of blueray movies/disks that are starting around 25-30 bucks a piece. Third, we tried to figure out what games for the ps3 will make the system stand out from all the rest, and have yet to figure that out. Xbox has games like: oblivion, bioshock, army of two, assassins creed(will be on ps3 also) gears of war, halo 3, etc. I wasnt a big fan of the original xbox but allready the 360 shows great promise with these titles coming out. If your still going for the ps3 i hope it works out for you but dont be suprised if the system doesnt live up to the hype. =-)

Unfortunatelly The 360 failed in japan, The best games(rpgs at least) comes from japan, With soo very little numbers in there, I don't see any great games comiing for the 360 from japan(only Blue dragon, But thats pretty much paid by MS.)

If I'm ever going to get a next gen console, it'll propably be PS3. Why? Because of the games. XBOX360 has no games that interest me. Wii is innovative and not so expensive, so it might be a good choice too. But I want to be able to play DMC4 and the new Final Fantasies(unless FFXII blows which I highly doubt)!
