Yes, but it is not done with the permission of the game company. What's more, private servers have different rule sets than the main game so it really is a detour to what is offered on the main game.
Listen, you can just read a book, dislike the ending, and decide to rewrite the ending and then post the book for download for anyone who wants to give a donation. You can take a song, decide that it needs more musical material in the higher end, mix it in and then post it for download for donation.
You can take someone else's game, decide you don't like parts of it, change it, and then offer it for play for donations.
If people don't like the game then don't play. you have say as to whether or not that game can be altered and offered as an alternative to the general populace.
There is a reason we have laws. To break them. Viva la resistance!
    Now taking 5$ donations.

Your analogy is flawed. Let's use the same analogy that you have used. Let's say you don't like the ending of a novel that you read and you decided to rewrite the novel's ending into something you like. You then decide to publish the "revised" novel that is written by another author. The original author would most likely sue you for plagiarism and copyright infringement. Why? Because you did not write the whole book, you merely wrote a part of it, that is, you only wrote the part of the ending into something which you like. Now, if you were only to publish the segment in which you wrote, then by all means do it and because you have the right to your own works. This is the same case as Lineage 2, the L2extreme people didn't design the whole Lineage 2 game. What they did was steal the original server code, modify the rule set into what they want and use the game client from the original Lineage 2 which includes everything from the game client to the artwork all of which belongs to NCsoft.

IF they do not like the Lineage 2 game that NCsoft offers then by all means do NOT play it. Instead they are free to design their own game.

We have laws because that is how a society survives. Without law and regulation, a society becomes anarchy and civilization will collapse. If you break a law, be prepared to pay the price.

Is Sweden different?  Not stating these things as fact, it was just what I understood to be true.

Switzerland and the scandanvian countries like Sweden are not in the EU. They have their own laws. What we would call software piracy is legal there for private use.

Can you explain how you or any other player on those servers "learned the hard way"? I guess if you really cared about your characters then you could say that. But then why would anyone play on a private server if you cared so much about your characters?

I learned the hard way because I spent time on the servers, not much like 300 hours maybe over 4 months, but still I can't get in touch with most of the pople I met there. It's not that I really cared, I'm just saying don't play on a private server for anything. I can't stress that enough.

Nope, this is why they need to make it an international crime.

Private Servers or Pirate Servers are made caus the developers of a Pay to Play mmo are dumb. 1)they make you pay $20.00 just for some rotting game.  2) Pirate Servers have lot more features 3) not enough content

i played SWG for 2 years when they changed the combat and stuff i lost all my friends so i quit and started playing different game those games werent fast enough (leveling wise) so i quit some. they say that in COH you can easily get to max level in a few months i played it for a year and the meter would stop at 23 so it became a boring pile of !@#! so i quit and started playing pirate servers. also the GMs Admins and Support never helped me when i started L2 it took me 2 days to get help getting it fixed so i say good luck to the pirate servers that bring players enjoyment!

PS: i have an idea for those dumbA$$ess at the legit companys... MAKE LEVELING ALOT  EASIER!!!!!!!!!!!
