DDO is already a small niche game. If someone is willing to accept that a good portion of the DnD "fanatics" are going to leave for NWN2, it seems one is accepting that the game is now a niche with in a niche offering. How long can a game like this survive? How long before it's sold off like Horizons was, with the niche shrinking with every passing month?

The exodus may be a trickle now rather than a flood, because NWN2 shipped with some annoying flaws. With no monthly fee, NWN2 doesn't need to be as good at offering the DnD experience to become the game of choice for DnD fans. Maybe not all the DDO fanatics are DnD fanatics, but when you start with a small niche and half your niche finds a viable alternative, that's never a good thing.

DDO offers MMORPG designers a nice template for making instanced dungeons with in their games better, that may be it's legacy. Too bad the designers of DDO focused on maybe a tenth of what they needed to offer to have a successful MMORPG!

DDO is just a single player game with online capabilities and nothing more. The market is full with such instance games which actually do nothing to prove their 15 every month.

D&D rules have not proven that can be applied to a massive online game without problems.

D&D rules are NOT balanced for MMORPGs. In D&D games you don't care whos is the strongest since you are all in a group. DDO tried to simulate this but failed.

DDO is a waste of time and money.

from what i've heard on massively online gamer, this game isn't worth 15 bucks a month.  i listen to this podcast weekly and this is the podcast to listen to for mmo gamers.

their opinions of this game were not very stellar.  from what i can remember its a lot like guildwars which i have not tried, but i do know that guild wars does not have a sub fee.  whereas ddo does.  i'd rather go to the movies once a month....

IMO, this is not the worst game I have every played, but not good enough to keep me paying.  I think other games out there are better and more fun.  DDO is almost fun.  I didn't like the quest only XP and extreme item damage.  I also like to solo sometimes and explore large outdoor zones.  so I play other games.  if you need to get your D&D nerd on then this is ok.  I think NWN 2 is better for that though.

NWN2 will never hurt DDO because BOTH games are owned and put out by Atari folks. So the dollars go to the same folks. If you buy NWN2 you are inadvertantly supporting DDO and vice versa:)

DDO is a solid game and even though it has had its  problems it is going in a good direction:)

    No,
actually, Wizards of the Coast owns the rights to DnD. Atari makes DnD
based games for WotC. Turbine currently owns the video game rights of
DDO. So yes, it's possible for NWN2 to hurt DDO. DDO has already lost
players so no it's not going in a good direction.

I would have to disagree because there are many things that DDO offers that GW does not.  In Guild Wars you have to select the target and then "commence the button pushing game"!  In DDO you have to actually move around to hit your target and aim, click and then also be conscious of the severaal spells and other things you could use as well.  There is much more thought and planning involved IMO.  I also have not seen GW implement any sort of Voice Technology either.  Actually the only thing I can see that is similar is the use of instancing.  DDO is unqiue in several ways, and comparing it to other games is sadly a waste of time.  DDO is very unqiue in several aspects.

I have noticed so many who flame DDO, but sadly I look back and grin.  Most play it like any "grind" MMO, and then become infuriated that it didn't play the way "they" expected it to.  Simply put its not your run of the mill MMO.  I have enjoyed PnP for many years now and was excited to see how it could be made into a game.  I think they did the best they could considering DnD truely cannot be imitated or coded.  Real DnD can never be truely recreated, it takes the intellengece and creativity of a true DM to make this happen.  If you were expecting more than what you recieved, you are sadly pushing your expectations beyond what anyone (i.e. Blizzard, SOE, Mythic, NCSoft......) could recreate.

PLAYING DDO IS SADLY A WASTE OF TIME.image  IT DESERVES THE DOUCHENOZZLE GAME OF THE YEAR AWARD!

I briefly tried the trial and absolutely hated the game.

    What I hated.

Character creation, Movement, Combat, Voice Acting, Interacting with NPC's, Interacting with Content, Graphics, Contineous stream of wordy useless pop-ups, Important pop-ups mistimed, non working newb specials, combat rolling of 20 dice.  Weak descriptions of what selecting any proficieny "meant".

Mainly it was combat that was so lame for me.  Turn based systems are great for pnp games.  It is really rough to force a dodge/block fire a special or attack, keep the mouse focused and deal with a dice coming up 1.  The games combat is just to clumsy and not fluid.  I could get over the rest if combat was engaging but it aint.
