Here are just a few other MMO's that have more subscribers than Eve...
    - City of Hero's/Villians
    - EverQuest 1 & 2
    - LineAge 1 & 2
    - Star Wars Galaxies
    - Final Fantasy

To say the truth.. thats not really true.

    Just look at the statistic:

WoW - it is the nr. 1 with over 7 million subscriber world wide( and at least over 2 million in europe/usa)

LineAge 1&2 - have both around 1,5 million subscriber, but just because the asia market(and this market is a lot different, no real subsriber), if you look just US&Europe they have both below 100k, not really relevant in any way.

Runescape - you cant count it either(above 500k), it is a free game(aol?)

Final Fantasy - it is the same as LineAge, in US&Europe Market it is almost unimportant.. i dont know the exact numbers, but not more than 200k

And now come the real follow up games after WoW

    - EvE(above 200k)
    - Everquest 1&2 (i really dont know the exact numbers, both maybe around 200k)
    - City of Heroes/Villians  (200k maybe)
    - DAoC (nowadays a lil below 200k)
    - SWG (below 200k, or even below 150k nowadays?)

All the rest is below 150k.

And now why is EvE more important nowadays than all those other games? Really simple, because it is the only game(except WoW of course), which have up to now increasing subcriber numbers. The good days for all the other games are all in the past.

With other words, nowadays, we have just WoW(and only WoW) and a lil follower with increasing numbers called EvE Online... all other games are almost history, and EvE cant compare with WoW.(Subscribers above 2million and above 200k is not really a comparison in any way)

Your post is laughable at best, MMOGChart.com supports my findings.

    Your stats are wrong
    • WOW: 7mil or so.  Actually I suspect this is heading downward slowly now.... I think they've plateaued finally.
    • Lineage 1 & 2: Both at about 1.5mil as you said.  Both under 100k subs in US & Europe combined.  However, you can't just discount asia because you don't like that they have high numbers.  They have 1.5mil subscriptions being paid to them.  That's really all that matters.  So, yes, they're bigger than EVE.
    • FFXI: 600-700k subscribers worldwide
    • EVE: Since we're going with worldwide:  170,000 Subscribers in World + 300,000 Beta Accounts in China.  If that holds up it will be well over 400,000 subscribers worldwide once China Servers go retail.
    • The rest:  No other games even come close to those.
To steal a term from the 'leet' folks:  Kthanksbye

    1. The idea that WOW has plateaued is only your Eve fanboi wishful thinking.  They continue to dominate the NPD Top Ten Selling Games list and will have a huge bump when Burning Crusades comes out.

    2. Speaking of the Eve fanboi wishful thinking - I just had to laugh at your counting of Beta Accounts in China.

    3. The only place with any data to support subscription arguments is MMOGChart.com which shows Eve has having less players than EverQuest, SWG, and COH/COV.  Sorry if I tend to believe research over fanboi ramblings.

I also find it hard to believe that these 2 games are the only choices for game of the year.

Come on ppl, there are so many more games out there that are better IMO.

For PvP , DAOC is the best... period. Not even a choice in the polls.  image

    MMORPG's played-
AC, AC2, AO, CoH, DAOC, GW, LOTRO, SB, SWG, WOW

That had to have been the most broken exercise in logic to which I've ever been witness. Wtg, ManInTheBox and Gameloading, you win at life. Better than last year too!

I think the trouble with EVE is it's "sandbox-ness" - it's a means to fun, rather than fun in and of itself.
In other words, playing with Pirate LEGOs (EVE, and yes, it'd be a poor analogy if I didn't limit the LEGOs somewhat) vs. playing Super Mario Bros (WoW).

I suppose the same "means to fun"/LEGO typification could be made to WoW, but there I think the anti-griefing constraints unfortunately act as brakes on a lot of otherwise interesting interactions. Baby with the bathwater and all that. image

Well, like I said before. The party that wins the election is the party that gets most of it's supporters to actually vote. At least that is how democracy works here in the US.

There is no evil in CCP informng players about these rewards, they are free to do so, as is any other MMO dev. So please stop complaining about it.

And, IMHO, both games, WOW and EVE, are high quality games. I can respect both, and probably would enjoy WOW for awhile (but I doubt it would give me any long term satisfaction, based on my experiences with GW and COx). The path the two games take in their gameplay mechanics are exact opposites, and both succeed in their own right.

That is the ultimate expression of quality, being able to succeed in a crowded market place.

So play what you want, vote how you want, and leave it be.

    • Best PVP game: WOW
    • Best FPS game: WOW
    • Best single player game: WOW
    • Best console game: WOW
    • Best game with spaceships: WOW
    • Best game without spaceships: WOW
    • Best board game: WOW
    • Best pen and paper game: WOW
    • Best EVE clone: WOW

When I was playing WoW I never realized how great the game was.  But with it winning all those awards it must be a great game.  I guess I should go back to playing it again, my opinion had to be wrong.  Thanks to these Awards I now understand that WoW was really actually the perfect game for me.  Now I am really going to enjoy this game when I resubscribe, because if all these people love it, then I must love it also.  Therefore I DO LOVE IT.

Blizzard won't link to this site as they try not to support sites that support "virtual good sellers".

We can say EVE is a titan in US/Eu market, only WoW,EQ1,EQ2, and CoX have more players, so it is at 5th place.

Concidering EQ,EQ2 will die with vanguard and CoX will die with criptic new super hero game, EVE will be on 2nd place

  • TechleoTechleo Member Posts: 1,984
People have been saying EQ would die for years. The reality stands most of the games you said would die wont die. They just fade down to a base level of players and drag on for a decade. Sorta like UO, AC, AO and various other games. I frankly dont see many people leaving CoX for the new Marvel comic game though. We will see.

Most ppl here are from the upper elite of MMOs and understand that WoW is a prettty over hyped. Secondly, EVE Online has won many awards from MMORPG.com bringing even more MMO players here. The game itself does not have very many subscribers compared to it's competitors.

OR #3 Eve actually links this site directly on its main webpage.  Therefore has all the Eve fanatics coming here to vote.

The contest is irrelavant because most people voting havent even played all the games to know which is better then the other.  All it tells is that EVE directly sends its players here to influence voting.  And WoW dominates the market and therefore has alot of people voting for it because they too are fanatics.

Yes this is a fact they actualy have a Pinned Thread about this vote on the Main forum. If Blizzard or NCsoft would do the same they would start to kick EvEs ass into the Space.

We're not debating that EVE has a stickied thread. However, you conjecture about if those other companies would do the same and cause a substantial reverse in voting trends is just that, conjecture.

More Eve fanboi hopes and dreams...  Just curious does CCP give all Eve fanbois crystal balls or is your thinking that EQ will die pure speculation on your part?  Also, you have no idea how many of the 500K+ subs to Final Fantasy are from the US.  If 1/2 of those are from the US then that pushes Eve out of the US top 5.

I still dont like it, i want a clear vote without the help from the Developers of the Games. But i see it EvE players seem to be very fanatic about theyere Game.

I think for a lot of us, EVE is one of those games we wished we liked.
Unfortunately the game has the mass appeal of a scifi-flavored cough syrup.

    Very subjective best MMO list:
Saga of Ryzom, Anarchy Online, Lineage 2, WoW
    Waiting for:
Age of Conan, Aion, Lineage 3

Yes, that would be ideal, having a completely open election. The same can be said for RL elections, a system where you don't need millions of dollars and sponsors in order to be a strong competitor, where anyone can compete.

But that simply isn't the case (at least in vote's regard). It's simply the freedom of choice here. Those devs that wish to put in the effort to energize their bases to vote will likely be rewarded so. It's their choice.

But I have to ask, if this wasn't about CCP and EVE, would their be as much contraversy? EVE is probably the most contraversial game here. The 8.4 review by this site spawned it's own huge debate thread where the language got pretty harsh. I have to ask you guys that are complaining about CCP's sticked thread, would you be up in arms if it wasn't about EVE?

No its becouse i hate fanatic fanboys and thats the case it seems. Everytime i check the gamelist charts i see EvE on first. How is this even possible? I dislike this site more and more it seems the provider of this site all play EvE themself.

I think the issue is if Eve was such a great game and deserved such awards & accollades then why were the retail sales so bad it got pulled from shelves and isn't even in the top 5 in terms of subscriber base?
  • Pride7Pride7 Member Posts: 289

Also I hate to point out the obvious but on any other major gaming site WOW beats Eve in both editor and player reviews...  Here is just a small sampling where WOW kicks Eve's butt:

    IGN

    1Up

    GameSpot

And on GameRankings.com WOW has a combined review score of 92% while Eve is struggling at 74%.  I say let the Eve fanbois stack this vote, they need all the help they can get!  LMAO.

Well, EVE abandoned the retail means of distribution when it's publisher went under (last I heard) and now does it's sales completly online (which I a better method IMHO).

But back to the crux of your question, I think the fact that the numerical advantage/disadvantage of subscribers isn't everything. I think the important issue is that EVE has been consistently growing. Since I've been playing (started 7/04, about a year after it went public), the max simultaneous players count has been going up in leaps and bounds. The game is thriving, and as a qualitative metric, what more do you want?

EVE deserves it's accodalates because it does things that are almost completely unique, and the fans are fanatic about it simply because of that. It isn't everyone's cup of tea, but once you get in your niche in that game, odds are that you are hooked for a good long while.

The simple fact is, it gives the players freedom to do what they want, the game mechanics are simply a means to an end in that regard (in that light, I think Ryzom should have been better represented in these awards, I hope that game survives). Does WOW, or many other games do that. That's not a dis against WOW, it does what it does pretty well, but honestly, what other games offer the players freedom?

    My 2 cents.

Yeah they are happy if they get Killmails (this is like a forumblog were people post theyere Killmails from Eve) from Noobbashing so they need new players.

The Eve retail product was pulled from retail shelves BEFORE their publisher went under.

    qft

I played eve for 6 months.  I gave it a fair try.  I liked the space theme, i liked the physics, i liked the market.  I loved the interface.  The graphics kick ass.  They need to add line of sight to weapons and PVP is a little too all-or-nothing, but for the most part there are many good things to say about it.

Only one problem, and it's a big one: game play.  There is too much waiting.

Waiting to complete warp.  Waiting for the next system to load.  Waiting to tow into station.  Waiting to leave station.  Waiting for your skills to finish.  Waiting for the market window to load.  Waiting for that BS rat to finally die (this is a big one).  Waiting, waiting, waiting.  I want to click, i want to type.  And when i do i want things to happen.  Occasions in which you interact with the game are sparsely placed between waiting sessions.  In this respect, eve plays kind of like those old animated movie games in which you make decisions at critical intervals in the plot, but otherwise just sit and watch.

You have to find something else to do while you play the game, and i tried it all.  I tried reading the forums, watching TV, reading books, surfing porn, playing other games in windowed mode, etc, etc, etc. What it came down to was that i always needed something else to do while i played, and with that realization came the inevitable question, "why am i paying for this?"

    So i stopped

To the OP, no they are not the only games just the only MMOGS that currently matter. Are there better games out there, definitely.  But the purest would have a fit if I called games like BF2 and the new BF24 or COD, etc.. a MMOG.

So what does WOW and EVE have that these other games don’t?  Is it fantastic game play, both are fun to a point but I have played better. Do the have better graphics, PVP action, emersion or anything that would make these games stand out? Not exactly, again I have played better. If you want emersion play Return to Wolfenstine or DOOM3, my son (16) could not play these because they were too intense, he ended up using all his ammo up halfway through the first area while I had plenty to spare (mainly cause my reflexes are so slow that I don’t jerk off a shot at everything that twitches). The point is that an MMOG that gets the awards should emerge you at least as much as RTF/D3.

So what makes these games so playable, could it be that they just have the right mix to work or is it that they suck but everything else sucks worse. Below is a list of the recognized MMOGS most of which I played, I will give a short opinion of the game. Note: I say recognized because one of my favorite games Shattered Galaxy nor Rune scape is listed.

Anarchy Online: This is a really fun game for about 3 weeks. The it becomes Wash, lather, Rinse, Repeat.
ArchLord: This one was fun for 2 months then it became WLRR
Asheron's Call: Just could not get into it.
Auto Assault: My son played this for a while; I just could not get into it, actually I had more fun playing matchbox racers.
City of Heroes: This is a fun game, but it becomes WLRR after a month so it’s on my rotation list.
City of Villains: Got this for my sons, I could not get into it. I am a paladin at heart so whole EVIL thing just fills wrong.
D&D Online: Bought this as soon as it hit the shelves, I had great expectations or maybe just flashbacks from my school days where we played the P&P version of this as well as MechWarrior and Warhammer (sadly I still have my miniatures some 20 years later) It’s not a bad game but just to WLRR without the necessary distractions.
Dark Age of Camelot: Have not played this yet.
Dark and Light: I just could not get into it.
EVE Online: What can I say; I started at BETA and have played off and on since then. It is a good game but not a great game. It’s going on 4 years and the game has still not lived up or become the game they sold me. See my end notes .
    Everquest: Never played it.
Everquest II: Tried it, was too WLRR.
Face of Mankind: I played this one for a few months, it simply is not geared to be enjoyable by a casual gamer. A hardcore would love it.
Final Fantasy XI: It’s on my list to try soon, it actually is going on my long rotation list to replace EVE depending on the next few months and how revelations turns out.
Guild Wars: Absolutely loved this game, I took every class to endgame which was the problem. Once you hit endgame there is nothing to do.
Horizons: Never heard of this one.
Knight Online: Looked at it, looked like a DAOC clone so am going to do DAOC first.
Lineage II: This looked great but also was going to require WAY to much time so I gave the account to my nephew, he loves it. (not the game for a casual gamer)
MapleStory: Never heard of it, will have to look into it.
The Matrix Online: My son and I tried this out for a month; it just was not clicking with us. My youngest does like it but then again he still plays runescape and D2.
Phantasy Star Universe: Have not looked into it yet.
Planetside: This was a very fun game for about 6 months. If you looking for something to play while you waiting for a new game defiantly give this one a try.
RF Online: I had high hopes for this game and had preordered it. The Battles are, well you have to experience them to believe them absolute best non-fps PVP I have seen, It’s the rest of the game that sucks, so WLRR that you get a headache.
RYL: Unforgiven Wars: on my list.
Ragnarok Online: never heard of it.
Roma Victor: Roma Who> I do need to look at these games I have never heard of.
The Saga of Ryzom: Just could not get into it.
Second Life: not seen it yet
Shadowbane: This one just fell short on so many things.
Silkroad Online: No info on this one.
Star Wars Galaxies: My son and friends played this they like it; again a casual gamer does not have the time to invest so it did not click for me.
Ultima Online: Oddly I never tried this one.
World War II Online: Will definitely look into this one.
World of Warcraft: I preordered WOW and have been playing it off and on since. It’s on my long rotation. I had learned from GW so even though I have 8 avatars on 4 servers none are above lvl45, I do not want to get to endgame and have a lot more fun trying out different combos of class and skills.

Just a short explanation, my sons and daughter all get a $30 game account allowance for doing their chores and I give my self a $60 a month allowance for my game accounts (because I deserve it). So I have 3 rotation groups. Short rotation 2 months, med 6 months and long 8-12 months. EVE is on my med rotation so I play it for 6 months then cancel the account and activate my COH or which ever game is in that rotation slot.

Ok after that long winded post back to the original topic. Are WOW and EVE the only or best games, well it’s not that simple. See it’s like having an Ugly girl friend; she’s not the best, just the best of the available choices at this point in time. EVE/WOW is just the best choices at this point in time.image
