Press Release - December 13, 2006

GUILD WARS EXCEEDS THREE MILLION SOLD

Breakthrough Game Series Hits Major Milestone as ArenaNet Announces Wintersday Festival and Exciting New Game Features

December 13, 2006 (BELLEVUE, WA) — Fueled by sales of the hit game Guild Wars NightfallTM, the latest release in the award-winning Guild Wars® franchise, sales for one of the world's leading subscription-free online roleplaying games have surpassed three million units worldwide in a little more than a year and a half. This milestone event was announced today by ArenaNet®, developer of Guild Wars®, Guild Wars FactionsTM, and Guild Wars NightfallTM, and NCsoft® Corporation, the world's leading developer and publisher of online computer games.

"Reaching three million units sold in such a short amount of time is absolutely incredible," says Robert Garriott, CEO, NCsoft North America. "Coupled with the recent news of Guild Wars Factions winning Billboard's Multiplayer Game of the Year, we couldn't be prouder of what the team at ArenaNet has accomplished with the Guild Wars games."

In further news, ArenaNet announced today the details of the in-game Wintersday Festival, as well as some exciting new features to be implemented in the game over the holiday season.

Wintersday 2006 — Special in-game events have become fan favorites the world over, and during this holiday season Guild Wars players will be in for another Wintersday Festival! During this event, players will find favorite outposts dressed to the nines with holiday décor, as they are invited to complete holiday-themed quests, participate in PvP snowball fights, and receive unique holiday rewards such as Winter Gifts, a Snowman Summoner, Eggnog, and Candy Canes. Wintersday 2006 will take place in-game December 20, 2006 through January 1, 2007. Visit www.guildwars.com for more event details.

Party Search — A brand new Party Search panel will be added to Guild Wars this December, which will allow players to more easily form groups. Casual and hard-core gamers alike will benefit from this new system, as it will make it easier for players to form parties for some of the tougher quests and missions in the game, find the last cog needed for a fearsome group that can tear through the PvP arenas, or just connect with old friends online to go explore the diverse Guild Wars world.

Reconnect After Disconnect — One of the most player-requested features comes to Guild Wars! If a player gets dropped from the game due to a connection problem, and that player can reconnect within ten minutes, the player's character will be relocated to the spot of disconnection. If the character was performing an action, such as casting a spell or auto-attacking a target, that character will complete the action as if still connected. If a player is in a group when disconnected, the other members of the party will be notified about the player's connection problems.

    So what?

Seriously though, how many of those people bought it, played it and dropped it like the piece of crap it is?

I'm one of them, the disc is collecting dust from where its been siting for years since I uninstalled the game.

I guess you voted with your money as is your right to do and cancelled your subscription thus denying them any more revenue from you....Oh wait....There is no subscription.

It doesnt matter if you play or not, you bought the game..

I'd rather play fun PvP, than an MMO if they're in the same setting(fantasy).  And yes mmorpg based fighting is very very differnt than a shooter.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

the best about this press is not the 3 million imo
search party and connect to instance on disconect makes this a really good news

for those that are not playing for one year , you should try it now , a lot of new stuff ingame.

Yea, I was thinking about coming back to GW and this might just be enough reason for me to.  The reconnection thing has always been a huge issue (especially in higher level GvG) where you could get an err 7 and just be screwed over.  The lfg feature will also be very useful, but I hope there still isn't a huge shortage on monks in PvE campaigns.

To me this shows 2 important things about Guild Wars that you don't often see in other online games:

    1. The devs actually care about improving a game that has very few issues with it in the first place.

    2. They are actually listening to what the players WANT.  This is where I think most MMOs fail (not calling GW a MMO, but other games could definitely take a lesson from GW).

Just love spamming the boards for getting a postcount huh guys? I think all of us have seen posts like that a dozen of times already.

I myself have played GW for over 1200 hours and I still think it's a good game and there are many more things for me to do in game.

Big deal so 3 million existing guildwar fans brought an expansion pack/Patch woopie.

Oh and its not an MMORPG

Its a CORPG. This was stated by Guildwars devs BTW. image

Just like any game, the amount of copies sold does not = the amount of players.

Game is a terrible.  I would really like to know how many people actually play the game concurrently.  I am sure like myself most people tried the game and quit after seeing how terrible it really was.  Really makes me wonder how people even give GW high reviews?  Only things I can think of is that its FREE so the standard is EXTREMELY LOW.  Or they havent ever played anything else, so basically are ignorant fanbois.

Don't get me wrong, the game was fun. For about 4-5 months.

After that it just got stale, and the Factions release didn't really help that. For a game you just shell out $50 for, its good. But for MMO standards it isn't.

So what if Guild Wars istent a MMORPG?!. People who gives a dam about that has no lifes.
It is just a bloody title....

    Grats for GuildWars.
I have played for 18 months, 3000 hours. My time has ended, it has been fun, But it couldent do for me anymore, and i got Gods & Heroes too look forward to know.

But GW was a awsome game, No doubts. image

    its really not THAT impressive.

3 million copies, that is counting all 3 campaigns, so alot of people bought all 3.  I'd say its only a good 1-2 mil actual people who have bought it.

Look at gears of war, 2 million copies or so by itself in like 2-3 months.  Big difference.

Just another eye-candy game that's completely forgettable...  Dungeon Siege comes to mind.  The reason why all the new titles, which cannot be compared with the glory of Diablo-1 or Everquest-1, are making such sales is because in today's market you can't return a game like that once it's opened and the Key was used.  Bleh!    image

    thanks for the posts all

can you tell me what are the standarts of a mmo ?
what do you mean by that.

for me the reconect on disconect makes a really big diference , its amazing how i felt diferent just becose of that , now there is a feeling of safety , you feel more stuck to that virtual place.
