When asked by other posters on this forum for new ideas, I consistently see people say they want to see a setting in a world other than a fantasy world. I can understand that. It is overwhelmingly the genre of choice for developers, probably because there are so many possibilites with it and it is probably about as far from the dreary world of reality as you can get. But after being done over and over again, it might get kind of old for some. Is this the case? Is it possible to create a different MMO with as many options as the fantasy genre?
I played City of Heroes for a while which is a very interesting idea, but has its limits. I was a little turned off by the lack of items you could acquire as you can in a fantasy world. For me, I don't care if they keep coming out with fantasy MMOs, I just want them to be good. When I think of new ideas, I think of new ideas to improve the already popular fantasy world. How about you?

Gamers aren't getting tired of the fantasy genre any more than players are getting tired of pve games and migrating to pvp games. There is an absensce or surplus of one and alot of people think they'd be better off with their choice of a game.
Personally, I'm getting tired of the "same" fantasy genre.
Seems fantasy means "Dwarves, Elves, Humans and Orcs" these days.
As long as there are no raiding involved, any genre that would get a teen/general rating would suit me.
Fantasy is as popular as ever. I understand that some peoples dislike it, but there always have been.

Yea, I wouldn't mind a MMO in todays world. Don't know how good it would be.
Personally, I don't care too much about themes, one way or another. Even a 16th century historical game like Voyage Century can hold my interest if the gameplay is good and different. Not that theme doesn't matter, I'd be more into it if it were sci-fi, or even fantasy - but if the gameplay weren't something different, I wouldn't have spent more than 15 minutes on it.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I like SoR's setting, futuristic medieval fantasy. I forget what that's called, but it's popular in the Asian culture.
Though, Post-Apoc I can't wait for. Fallen Earth is on top of my list of watched games.
Or hell, just a medieval game like Darkfall. (it has a little fantasy thrown in for variety, but I think it's mostly medieval)
A Work in Progress.

As far as Fantasy is concerned, I will have to agree with most of the other posters in this thread. I'm not tired of fantasy so much as I am tired of the same'ol experience.
with a better release and more/quickier updates than the current one

The main problem is that 19/20 of the mainstrwam and non mainstrwam MMOS's comming out the past few years are all Fantasy ones with only the odd non fantasy such as City Of Heroes/Villains Anarchy online and EvE and The star wars one.
What we need is 3 things.
1. More Sci fi based MMORPG's
2. More games that are based not on sci - Fi or fantasy but either a combination of the 2 or based in the real world for something new and refreshing.
3. Or a post apocolyptic MMORPG in the way of say a survival horror like the resident evil games or based on a world like you get in the Manga Nausicaa of the valley of the winds [Its isolated city layout seperated by poisoness jungle wioth giant monster would make a good PvE/and PvP game.
Thats what we need something trully new and daring.
I think the main problem faced is that the fantasy genre is the one that so easily lends itself to the basis of and MMORPG - individuality. The era of the sole adventurer. Progression of technology and knowlege somehow escalated the size of general conflict. Thousands of troops with guns and tanks and fighter jets are sent to war, not 3 or 4 adventurers with swords and slings. And not only that, but gamers have a craving for the arcane, and our perception of magic seems pretty rooted around a medieval setting.
As the OP noted, City of Heroes does exploit probably the only niche we have in terms of fitting the variety lent by arcane and superhuman power into a contemporary - even futuristic - style persistant universe. However, now that it's been done, it's just another thing crossed off the list of the possible.
I personally would like to see Warhammer 40,000 Online, because if the army based combat of Warhammer Fantasy can be broken down into the singular MMO style, then perhaps the same principle could be applied to the futurism of WH40K.
Probably the restriction of most MMO's to the fantasy genre is driven by the close-minded gaming community. There is a certain element of "it has to be believable," which puts developers in somewhat of a bind. There is only so many ways they can include the gameplay features in demand, while building them into a universe that maintains the believability gamers crave.
All I found was "The combined company will introduce new online and offline gaming products across the science-fiction, horror, and fantasy genres." So unless I missed something that is a pretty bold statement without much backing. I'd love a link though, to a non-rumor page.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

WWIIOnline The Real War!
Maybe Sociolotron is your thing then . That name was a random piece of trivia I never thought I would use, but back when SL came out and the online brothel news was flying someone brought this older game up. Not my kinda thing personally, sends a shiver up my spine....
From the main page:
While other online role playing games mostly focus on monster bashing or warfare, Sociolotron has a totally different focus. This game is all about social interaction. If chatting with other players, combining your talents to accomplish tasks together, and having a lasting impact on the game world is your cup of tea, then you have come to the right place. But what's more, this game is specifically designed for players age 21 and older!
No censorship of your game play, except for legal reasons. Game elements that enable you to run around and eliminate monsters (yes we DO have the standard monster treatment also), elements that enable you to blackmail your fellow players, eliminate them, have sex, live out your darkest fantasies, and even establish a lasting dynasty. PK is a reality in this game and you must be prepared to pass on your belongings to a worthy heir!
