fantasy rocks, but more variants of fantasy would be good. AC/AC2 for instance are fantasy but more of an original kind rather than traditional kind.

I dont like guns.  Dont know why, because Ive never had any RL problems with them, but games that center on guns have never been all that fun for me.  I dont think Ive seen any non fantasy game that doesnt center on guns so im just playing fantasy gaming.

What I would like to see is a fantasy world where the magic is not mundane.  Wizards are all blast blast blast and no finesse.  Where does intelligence factor into that?

Not completely tired of the genre but i need a break out of it somehow or at least any kind of different fantasy genre woud do, i swear i can't stand elf or dwarves for the next few years lol. I hope either Conan, Chronicles of spellborn or Tabula rasha will be cool, to get 1 year or so out of the basic d&d fantasy genre before warhammer come out

Im personally very tired of the fantasy genre. I like historical games set in time periods. I would lose a finger if someone made a decent Car racing mmorpg. Something like motor city online but newer and better. There is a market out there for people that dont like fantasy games.

The current Sci Fi MMO's are much more exciting then the Gandalf shit on the market.

this is from the poll off of this very website:

    Western High Fantasy

    7.8%
    Mech / Robot

    4.3%
    Eastern High Fantasy

    3.7%
    Manga / Anime Fantasy

    9.5%
    Medieval Fantasy

    42.3%
    Sci-Fi

    19.4%
    Space based

    4.6%
    Super Hero

    2.7%
    Real World War

    3.5%
    Real Life

    2.1%

I've played most mmo's out there and I try all types but fantasy is still my fave, with Sci-Fi as the runner up <3

If someone were to offer a fantasy game without the same Tolkienish theme, and with "realistic" graphics, I am perfectly fine with it, even though I generally prefer science fiction. This is why I'm following Age of Conan, even though it is a low fantasy/mythos setting.

Like it or not, Tolkien is the father of modern fantasy.  Virtually everything out there is based on his work in one form or another.  Even fantasy worlds that existed pre Tolkien owe much of their current form to him and his reach isn’t just limited to fantasy worlds.  Much of what gets called science fiction is actually science fantasy with the worlds “science” standing in for “magic”.  Star Wars, for example, is as much a direct descendant of Tolkien as any fantasy world.

The fact is that an RPG is really only attractive if you set it in a fantasy world, it can be a science fantasy world, a superhero fantasy world, a post apocalyptic fantasy world or a more classic fantasy world but ultimately the whole point is escaping the constraints of the real world. All of these types of worlds have some Tolkien in their heritage in their modern form because Tolkien shaped out perception of how a fantasy world of any type is created.

For some reason, sci fi's really don't catch my attention all that much. Fantasy is what holds my interest, however variety within fantasy will always be appreciated.

Fantasy games are awsome, it just depends on the game.

I was thinking of ideas for a fantasy games.

No Orc (I'm sick of Orcs), Dwarf, Elves or Undead. Instead, you make your own species. There should be a list of different species, but you can interbreed them, up to three times. Maybe like, Humans, Goblins, Gnomes, some kind of Dinosaurs, etc, etc. And you can interbreed into things like : Minotaurs, Centuars, Serpent men, etc.

Also, to make things interesting, randomly generated maps, like in Diablo II.

You hit the nail on the head. The fantasy genre is so popular because of its creative freedom. If the game title is independent and not based off of an existing franchise, then the developers really have all the creative liberties they could ever want. This can make for some remarkable games, but it seems like recent developers are afraid to push the limits and try some new things. We are seeing alot of games that follow in Everquest's steps and even more games evolving into WoW clones.

City of Heroes in particular wasn't as great as it could be because it was very limited. Being a game placed in a super hero genre, there was no need for items, equipment, or any type of economy. This was a huge change for most MMO enthusiasts, myself included. I've heard that they have a Marvel game in the works, so it'll be interesting to see if they implement a new system.

All I found was "The combined company will introduce new online and offline gaming products across the science-fiction, horror, and fantasy genres." So unless I missed something that is a pretty bold statement without much backing. I'd love a link though, to a non-rumor page.

Here is the press realease.   http://www.white-wolf.com/index.php?line=news&articleid=629

"Conceptualization and early development has begun to bring White Wolf's World of Darkness, one of the world's strongest gaming properties, into the online world."

    Yay!!!!

well you can only do the same thing so much before you get so tired of it.   If every company in the world didn't try to get there part of the action then it wouldn't be tired out but that is not the case not is it.  So yea i would have to say that is tired and dried out..
