May as well put another story update on. It seems that a lot of people like Guild Wars story. Same with Warcraft. Lineage II seems like it may have a good story. I heard one post saying that City of Heroes and City of Villians was pretty good. Anarchy Online seems to have a few posts showing it some love. I heard one or two posts supporting Everquest. FFXI has two posts supporting it, but one out of two says the game blows, just not the story. I heard that Shadowbane had a good story and plus it is now free to play. Star Wars Galaxies has some support.

But overall, Guild Wars is winning, and with Nightfall on the way, I'm guessing that there won't be any shortage of people supporting that statement.

I have not played too many MMORPGs, but I can tell you about Dark age of Camelot. The more classic areas have wonderful quests and many an NPC to tell you pieces of the story. The game takes place in dark ages England, Ireland and Norway. They even have mythical Avalon, Hy Brasil and Aegir to visit too! All complete with wonderful stories if you like the mythology of these places. Mythic/EA has really screwed the story up in the last few years though I think, what with all of this Atlantis, Darkness, and Crete rubbish.

Alot of good roleplay can still be found in DAoC though, you have to look kind of hard though, I can recommend a group of people called Sangreal (Holy Grail in Gaulish Gaelic if Im correct). They are hardcore roleplayers, veteran DAoC players (since beta) and all very nice. They play on the Gareth Server on the Bossiney cluster.

Someday, if Mythic/EA can be persuaded hard enough, they may create a server of what playing the game was like back in 2001/2002. It was phenomenal back then I think, for the story and community I mean, I wasnt really involved in the RvR things ever.

Dont go right into the game expecting to be impressed at first though. You really have to ask around and dig deep to find the good stories that are still in DAoC, trust me though, they are there. Who knows, maybe the Atlantis or Darkness falls things or this new Crete thing may work for you. This is all from my perspective, after all.

There are actually some roleplaying storytelling events barely alive on the roleplaying servers too though, just barely.

I'm into Guild Wars right now which isn't *officially* an MMO, but still a great rpg, and Nightfall is coming out soon. Good place to start.

Sp1te, Guild Wars is an MMORPG, you can speak with other people from all across the globe. It is *officially* an MMO. If you couldn't speak with other people, I could understand what you were saying, but you can. Do not say such things as that, because it shows that you don't know what you are really talking about.

i have played WoW and for what you are after i have to say you wont find it in WoW.

I have played and still do play EvE im not sure if this is what you are after but it has a lot of player made content in it and you CAN affect the ingame world by your actions.

Guildwars has the most ingame storytelling ive seen tho this one may be the game for you plus the graphics are very good. And its got no subscription fee.

Everquest has some interesting quests but it lacks a cohesive storline.

Anarchy online is bugged to hell you give it a go and see how many times you need to repatch it erase it and repatch it again just to get it to work  im sure there is a good game there somewhere but ive yet to get past the patching...shame really.

    I hope this helps you.

All I have to say is...wow...not the game, just...wow. You must have plenty of free time...I don't know how you've managed time to play all of these games...all I can say is that I admire people like you. The true geeks (geeks are better than nerds, tell me if anybody needs to know the difference), and if you take offense to that, I apologize.

David1x, if you could explain why those games have great stories, that would be great.

without a doubt the best story IS: Lord of the Rings, hands down, period.  No other mmorpg can even compare to that story, none.

Well, you are judging from stories OUTSIDES the mmo.  This is quite pointless.  You have to judge from within the MMO, what stories does it provide you?  Is Turbines MMO better because of Peter Jackson?  I don't think so, it got more spotlight, but they are not better...and I am pretty sure they will screw this story.  They screw a BIGGER franchise after all.  They have the KING of rpgs, and they manage to fail.  So...

To the guy asking WHY CoH/CoV is 5-10 years in advance.  Well justifying that would be long, but it is the sums of the features that make a global result.  See, the stories for example, since we are talking about them, they are easy to access, to re-read, to check as often as you wish (until completion), yet, they are not crushing you, you are not summerged by stories.  If you don't want to read, you can bypass it, yet, it is there, easy to access.  Very sweetly incorporated, instead of been enforced on you or been unexistant...it is there, accessible, sweet, but optional.  When you enter the zone, there is a clicky-funny sentence, even if you don't like to read the stories, they can put a smile on your face.

5-10 years in advance for City of Villains/Heroes is indeed for the whole game, not just 1 aspect.  Instancing is another aspect, it has the best edges from it, without the flaws.

Very nice post Anofalye, I agree with you on that MMOs stories should be based on the content within the game instead of the original story (also, Lord of the Rings was written by J.R.R. Tolkein, not Peter Jackson) I still disagree that CoH/CoV isn't 5-10 years in advance. It may seem like it, but if you look at some games in 5-10 years, you'll probably say, "Wow, I was way off!"

We are making long strides in technology everyday. To say that we have games that are 5-10 years ahead, I have to disagree. It may be 2 years ahead at most, but not 5 or 10 years. The story for CoH/CoV most likely is great and easily accessible considering that I have yet to hear a single negative comment on it. I still refuse to believe that its 5-10 years ahaed of our time.

An optional story is always nice incase you don't like it form some odd reason. I hope that this has helped along with some of my other posts.

I have to put in a big vote for CoH/V here. The backstory's concept, inserting superheroes into most of the 1900s' history (heroes fought in WW2. there was a second Pearl Harbor in Paragon City, analog to the war in Europe over the Pacific) always interests me. The in-game storyline is pretty damn good, as you get higher level you start to uncover incredible secrets about all the different villain groups. The game is hurt a bit by the ... well, I don't lie, CoX's missions get a bit repetitive. Different teammates, different maps, and different combinations of enemies help break it up a bit, and the better story arcs throw in an elite boss or even an Archvillain. The Task Forces are pretty fun stand-alone storylines that can take hours to complete, with some neat twists thrown in. (the final mission of  the first task force is a three way free for all between villain groups, stop them or a dam goes kersplode.) not to mention the people who give you the task forces are the signature heroes and villains. I'm in the high 30s and am having fun digging up dirt on Crey Industries, the evil corporate conspiracy villain group. Damn their oily hides.

Wow, when I made this topic in October, I didn't think it would be remembered even in December...amazing. Anyways, may as well update or something. I've heard good things on CoH/V multiple times, Warcraft is getting its ass handed to it by the posters (mostly), Lineage II I've heard good and bad. Yulgang slipped in, I've never heard of it...FFXI is obselete in my opinion (FFXII kills!) Guild Wars is pretty good. I haven't heard anything about Anarchy Online recently though...Overall though, I'd say CoH/V is winning in the race to become number 1 though. I know that there are a lot more games out there people, lets hear about them.
