Well, "early Jan" start for beta 5 is confirmed. Now, they've said that beta 5 will be the "open beta". Open beta, which is primarily stress testing, usually lasts ~2 weeks or so. Which makes the Jan 29th release date pretty viable, though they haven't said anything about that one way or the other. Unless they said it today. Forums seem to have died over there just now.
Agreed, and if it is, it will be yet another SOE pooch screw. When will the higher ups in that company LEARN that premature buggy releases and totally changing a game with a loyal fan base are not the way to MMO success. I really hope it is not released on the 29th of Jan. I was playing about a half hour ago and honestly, I got a headache. It has potential, but its not ready.
While I agree that they're releasing it to soon, if indeed they do go live on the 29th, I don't believe Sony has anything to do with it. And I think of Sony as the corporate version of Joseph Stalin.
It's simply that Sigil has run out of money, and time. The game has been in development for what, 4.5 years now? That's a damn long dev cycle with nothing to show the investors. Basically, it's sink or swim time for their baby. Will it hurt them in the long run? Yeah, but much like EQ2, it will survive. Hopefully, sans more WoWification. But as always is the way, crying will commence on the forums that the game is too hard, and that people have a constitutionally protected right to not have to think, or do other hard stuff like read quest text, and the beancounters will start to put pressure on the team at about the 6 month mark to increase it's "mass market appeal". Then it's CU redux.
But by that time, I should be testing WAR, AoC, or some other game, so...
@Anarchy I will keep an eye peeled for you ingame, should I pick it up at release. Depends a good bit on if I get my new & improved pc up and running before Feb. mmm dual core processors.
On reflection you may be right about the whole Sigil and funds aspect of this. What you are 100% right about is the "WoWification". They will all show up demanding they be able to loot the best stuff in the game 10 seconds after they have created their character. I wish these people would just stick to WoW and leave the other games alone. I hate WoW, I played it for 2 weeks and decided it wasn't for me. I didnt start spamming Blizzard to make it harder and more elaborate, I left. These people need to learn how to do the same thing. Don't like it? Too hard? Leave! Simple.

dude it's been 3 years not 4.5 and sigil isn't near out of money.
In it's current phase yes it's not ready. But every patch brings major(MAJOR)improvements and they still have a beta 5 phase which will bring a major patch to start and probably 1 before and 2 after so i'd say they will be fine. These guys are veterans of the genre. I have faith that they have things well in hand for a early-mid february release. Don't forget that Brad has more at stake than money. He has a well earned reputation. Don't be so quick to assume he'll feel pressured by the company he helped create. Remember there was no SOE before Brad McQuaid.

And we would have been better off altogether if there had never been an SOE. But you are wrong because there was an SOE before Brad McQuaid, he operated Verant. Which sold off to Sony just like Sigil will. EQ, for some it was a great game (more power to you) but after experiencing Brad McQuaid and his holier than thou attitude through the beta of EQ I was happy to stay away from SOE altogether until SWG came about. Like I have said before I cant wait for Vanguard to come out because of the amount of crying that is going to inundate message boards around the world as hype eating fanbois off themselves left and right.
You are right that they are veterans of the genre... but they are still stuck in the same mentality of nearly a decade ago. But the truth will be revealed when its released.
The open beta is supposed to start around the time of the release of the WoW expansion so that would make it difficult for Vanguard to be released in January. The middle of February to sometime in March is more realistic.

The beta starts in the first week of January as quoted in the official forums. The game will ship around the end of January from what I hear.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
There is ABSOLUTELY no way this game will be ready for January 29th. If it is released on that date 2 things are blatently obvious : 1 : SOE has a far greater hand in this than we are being led to believe. 2 : This game will not do well in the short term. I can't say much because of the NDA, but it's not ready and wont be in 30 days. S
SoE doesn't have a say in the release date. They are the publishers. Sigil is running out of cash to spend for dev work on the game. I agree that this game will be hurt big time if it launches way to early...meaning end of January. This game needs more dev time period.
One thing for sure I am going to enjoy listening to all the Vanbois crying, bitching and moaning about how this game was let out of beta in it's state. It's going to be a "I told you so" moment. Over all fanbois never learn. They are like religous nuts who don't think logically and can only see their own faith in how things should be in their minds rather then how things are in the real world. Those types of people will be......
1.) Be in complete denial and say the game is perfect.
or
2.) Angry as hell. They will have a feeling of being betrayed and lash out at Sigil.
or
3.) Will try to find some way to blame SOE for this whole mess even though it was not SOE's fault or doing.

The game has been in development for 4.5 years not 3 years. Most MMO's take 4-5 years to develop. Vnaguard is right on schedule and within the normal range.
I agree with the whole February/March release mostly because I feel that it's not ready. (NDA bound)
Also, people keep mentioning the dates from say Amazon or EB, these dates are not a good judgement of release dates. These dates are more like rough educated estimates. Especially for a game like Vanguard, which is still sitting in beta.
Basically I think we can expect mid-February, March at the latest. That's just my feeling anyways.

Ummm....Release it at the end of January, March, or right now. I don't think it's gonna make much difference either way.
I know they're out of Dev bucks but its no excuse to force the player base to pay for a game still in developement. IMHO this is basically what Sony did with EQ2. Beta 5 is basically a stess test / PR stunt in most games anyway so that means its not too far after that.
No matter, I don't think my machine will run the game anyway.
LMAO!! No game company out there is forcing anyone to do anything, if you play the game it is by YOUR choice.
Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there, 80 are nothing but targets, 9 are the real fighters. Ah, but one, ONE of them is a warrior, and he will bring the others home. -Heraclitus 500BC
This game has a lot of potential, but as some other posters have hinted to, it is not ready for prime time yet. Jan 29th is a very optimistic date for release and in my opinion at least, a bad decision if it actually happens.
Ok I like what I've seen of Vanguard. However, #1 this game is not ready for Jan release from what i've seen and heard. #2 IMHO releasing this game on the heels of a WoW expansion is just plan stupid.
Funny, given BC was due out some six months ago. I always thought Blizzard deliberately delayed BC's launch to interfere with all the new games coming out in 07, eg. Vanguard. Vanguard isn't being released on the heels of BC. BC's been thrown under that heel like a 3-day old banana skin in the hopes of making it slip.
If Blizzard had released BC six months ago, players would have played all the content and been juicy ripe for something new to play by now.
But I doubt BC'2 2007 release will ultimately have much impact on the playing field. WoW is so 2004. The MMOs coming out this year look to have so much more to offer.
I will be ready for Open beta / release regardless of the critics online.
If nothing more then the potential it offers, which imho is more then any game out today or coming up for release.
I do not look for a game I can beat in a 6 month time frame, but one I can grow with for a long time. EQ had this for me and Vanguard will offer this according to the devs.
Thats all I`m looking for, if Sigil says it will release Jan. Then I will be there, if they announce it will be June I will be there too. Brad has said many many times, the game will release when he says its ready to release, not a day before.
Vanguard is NOT ready for release this month. But if you develop a game for almost 5 years, the beta has been going on for over a year then you would be pretty much out of cash to continue to develop the game. My instinct tells me they wanna release to get an influx of cash to finish the game without selling off rights to the game to do so. Ill buy it to support this and hoping this is what they intend. Remember this isnt a multibillion dollar company like SOE developing a game where they can do what they want $ wise, these guys have to be reaching there budget after almost 5 years of development and getting nothing back from it.
whats funny is that they have been in closed beta for over a year. I was in the first stage of beta and yea it had terrible bugs like normal, but after 5 months of testing i got really bored with the way it ws laid out. Killing the same type of mob for 30 lvls gets REALY old. There was only like 6 diff types of mobs so i don't know

I read that they went to beta WAY too early because of microsoft. That was why they left ms. So yea they know that early beta was crappy. Thats why. It was also mentioned that "we paid dearly in bad PR" because of it. So to me that implies that they know it was a mistake and dont intend to allow the same mistake for release.
Does anyone else find it amusing that games can be in development for 4-5 years, and yet still feel half-assed?
Not even just MMO's, regular console games too. I'd like to start with "Fable".
I really don't mind long developmental cycles, but I've yet to see a game that has taken full advantage of these prolonged times. While I don't think Sigil is anywhere near broke, I think they're aware that delaying this game any longer is going to cost them potential subscriptions. I think they're in the mindset of "release it prematurely and piss off the nay-sayers, or release it later and piss off the fan-boys".
Just my 2 cents!
Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...
Don't forget the hype curve. Players can maintain interest in a game they can't play for only so long.
I think lifting the NDA and declaring open beta now, before BC, is a smart move. They're not making the mistake of charging fans to play an infant beta (*cough DnL*) but they're giving players a glimpse and hopefully demonstrating they're close to making good on what they've promised for the game.
