You are playing your favorite online game with a group of friends.  You and your group are at a spawn point, mission, camp, or whatever and are doing very well on XP and loot.  Someone comes along and asks to join the group and you invite them.  After a few minutes the new person says "This XP sucks I know a much better place where we can level 10 times in one hour".  So with a sigh of resignation you follow this person to the new place and you and your group are promptly killed.  If you dont go you lose part of the group and are no longer able to handle the place you are at.

You are sitting in a town resting from  your recent adventures and someone comes up to you and says "Let me see your <insert weapon name here>.  After a few seconds the person says "HA HA you pansy you need a weapon like mine it does 10 billion points of damage per hit.  You are stupid to be using that lame <insert weapon name here>".

You are traveling to a zone to see what adventures await you and someone stops you and says "Congrats on making it to (Master Doctor or Level 50 or whatever)." "How long did it take you" they ask.  You answer with pride that you have been playing for 3 months and thank them for the kind words.  They then laugh and say "3 MONTHS, HAHAHAHAHA, I have this macro I run and I can get that level in 3 days, wow you must be stupid. "

What I cant figure out is why people like that even bother to play a game.  What fun is there in running macros to level, being so anal about reaching the top level and having a weapon or item that allows you do that so quickly.

TAKE THE TIME TO ENJOY THE GAME.

Many times I have come across people with such character. I believe it is their goal to be better than anyone else and at the least amount of expense possible. Hence the use of hacks, third party programs and other elements that give them an edge over anyone else in the game.

TAKE THE TIME TO ENJOY THE GAME.

You mean enjoy the game like you are right now? Complaining about other players who hurt your feelings? Maybe you should work on not letting other people bother you and get in the way of your enjoyement, since it is a 'massively multi-player' game, and you will need to learn to deal with all kinds of people.

Perhaps this is the only accomplishment that they ever performed in life. I use the term "accomplishment" loosely. image

Dude, you are just as awful as the morons presented in the earlier post.  Maybe if you take your head out of your @rse and read the earlier message, you might learn something from it.

Patience is the key to dealing with anybody.  If someone ridicules you for the above explanations, they are very shallow people.  Take this quote, for one.

It's part of human nature to take the fastest and/or easiest route to success. That's just the way we are. However, some people decide to immerse themselves in the experience.

In otherwords, some people want to achieve a goal and some people just want to take the journey.

"Dude." Maybe you should cut down on the name-calling and say something meaningful. The initial poster invited criticism by sarcastically commenting on others and expressing a specific lack of knowledge regarding their intent. I merely responded with a reflection of my opinion on the matter and offered practical advise. Empty insults are useless. Next time, try producing a valid point or argument. THEN feel free to throw in an insult...retard.

WHat was sarcastic about my post.  Oh and I know their intent.  They belittle others to boost their own ego.

If you run into a character like that in a PvP game you should just kill them.  That will teach them a lesson.  image

The initial post pointed out some typical griefer scenarios. Nothing new, but spot-lighting etiquette failures is always worthwhile in my view, and I didn't see any sarcasm. The post you then quoted was a fair assessment of what I am sure others were thinking. Then, the classical use of "retard" to prove your point. Bravo.

I'll have to agree with feedtherich here. People complain too much about other people that don't play a game as they would. Those people have the right to play anyway they want as long as they aren't hacking. If they want to move in and steal your kill, good for them. You might not like it but I'm sure he did. So does your enjoyment really outweigh the other guy's? Remember, the guy you are calling a griefer didn't design the rules of the game, he is just utilizing it in a way that you wouldn't. So, why are you mad at him and not the people who designed the rules?

Since everyone has taken my post in a bad light, I will apologize now for my behavior and in handling the situation as badly as I did.   My name-calling was unjust.  But a point must be brought to attention.

On the side of human nature, it is true that people will take the fastest and quickest path to reach power and fame.  Once that has been achieved, they have no other enjoyment but to ridicule others.  This phenomenon is known as powergaming.  It's basic human nature: to take the rules and use them to your best advantage.  Once accomplished, the game has no meaning and morals take a backseat.

Respect is a very powerful tool that can be utilized in this arena.  Once someone has griefed another, that someone is not worthy of any respect.  A basic formula to remember:

    Normal Person + Anonymity + Audience = @rsehole.

No One should be the victim of Stealkilling, Ninja Looting or Ridicule.  But it happens. And how one deals with these matters determines the strength of one's character.  Complaints are valid, even if they invite ridicule.

In my saying so, feedtherich I would consider to be the usually griefer.  Even when emotion has taken the best of me, I must apologize for my actions.  I did act as a "retard".

But let me tell you this once, DUDE, just enjoy the game you're playing.  Obviously, whiners are your cup of tea and you have a need to demean them.  By all means, do so.  This just reveals your character in a very bad light.  I just hope you can live with your image.

I believe you are referring to a common phenomenon expressed quite aptly by the famous Gabe from Penny Arcade. The following link displays it quite nicely.

    Being a good Player
Many of you are aware of the problems that other multiplayer games have encountered with the public.  Player Killing, hacking, cheating, even the crashing of servers for fun so that others can't play.  To make a long story short, the problem is people.  When you make a game available to the mass public, you get a lot of weirdoes wanting to either ruin everybody else's fun or command and control everything in sight.  It's pathetic (and these people are scum), but it's a reality.

Thats from the instructions of Demise : Rise of the Ku'tan (very fun game I may add)

I agree with the last part .. "It's reality ."

  • NasasNasas Member Posts: 73
I just see things like that, common courtesie (sp?).  You should have respect for the other players.  Yes they have a right to play, but why not play with repspect in mind.

  • CthulhuXXCthulhuXX Member Posts: 9

The rules for the game should be clearly outlined.

If kill-stealing, looting, and PKing mercilessly are a legal part of the game, then someone should fill that role.

    good guys and bad guys.

However, if kill-stealing is not allowed and people do it anyway, then they need to enforce the rules somehow and punish the grief-players.

I've played games where kill-stealing was not only legal, but encouraged. It could also lead to "good guys" coming to the rescure and killing the bad guys.

Of course, i'm talking about the old 2-d, free, no level-cap type games. You'd really think that the commercial games would be able to make and enforce rules better...but they don't.

  • TaskyZZTaskyZZ Member Posts: 1,476

ShadowBane allows it. They allow kill stealing, training, etc... As long as you are not actually hacking the game, you camn pretty much do anything you want. Of course, we can all see how well that game is doing. Even full-on PvP'rs do not like it...

There are people like the one described in the original post in every game. Give some people anonymity, and the owrst comes out of them. Of course, they always give the "it's a game" response. Imagine how bad people would be driving if driving were an anonymous act...

The main question is, "What is unethical?" The only things I see that are unethical are:

    • Hacks - examples include speed hacks and wall hacks.
    • Exploits - exploiting a game bug is just a low level hack. It is up to the developers to fix the bug as quick as possible, but those who usually exploit the bug aren't going to tell the developers about the bug.
    • DOS Attacks - this can even be something I've seen in Neocron a some time ago when someone distributed many small items throughout the game world which caused the server to lag and everyone's graphics to crawl. (This example could also be an exploit and the developers fixed this by the way)
    • Aimbots - or any other bot that was not intended for the game by the developers.
    • Unintentional Macros - usually this uses some outside program to continually do a sequence of mouse or keyboard inputs in a fashion to increase a player's skill without them having to be at the keyboard.
Other than that, I don't see any other behaviour that I find unethical even if it's not the way the designers of the game intended it to be. I would call it emergent gameplay behaviour. If what emerges causes the game to be unbalanced, then the developers have every right to nerf the gameplay to balance it as they see fit.

So, you may consider these other players unrespectful, griefers, and what have you, but they are playing a game with the rules given to them. And a player can do all he can to take advantage of these rules to advance in the game as he sees fits. If you don't like the rules, try to get the developers to change the rules or go play some other game with rules better suited for you. It's not the player's fault, he is just playing a game. It's the rules. Complain about the rules, not the players. Don't be a player-hater. ::::26::

  • TaskyZZTaskyZZ Member Posts: 1,476

So, don't expect people to play with respect, expect the game makers to make the game so limited as to control every aspect of the game?!?!

I don't see it. There is such a thing as common courtesy. Just because you are anonymous does not mean that you should be a total jerk.

Hmmm, my car allows me to drive 120mph, so I should be able to do it... Hmmm, my car can run over pedestrians, so I should do it... They should make the cars not be able to do it, not make rules telling people not to do it... Is that the mentality here? "It is the car manufacturers fault, not mine officer. This car should only be able to go 65mph..."

  • MalkavianMalkavian Member UncommonPosts: 2,995

Task raises a good point. Cars, padestrians cops.... hehe reminds me of GTA. image

People seem to forget that we're talking about games. For the enjoyment of the masses, rules are set in place. By paying for / playing the game, you are agreeing to the rules set by those with authority. If you cannot abide by these rules you face the consequences. (Ie. Hack & get Banned.) Same thing applies in real life. Run over a pedestrian, you face the consequences. (You face jail + other penalties) By getting a driver's license your agreeing NOT to run over a pedestrian(s). image

If you cannot see yourself abiding by the rules, don't hack or get a driver's liscense.

If your afraid of someone who hacks or someone with a license, dont play the game and don't go outside. image
