After playing Vanguard for a few days I don't think it's for me and not the next big mmo, from my perspective. Doing a quick search I didn't really see anything that would be all that interesting other than the BioWare project that we know so little about. The major drawback is that they are still years away from release. Perhaps soon we'll find out it's genre. Here's to hoping for high fantasy!
Anyone else looking forward to something different?

Just my opinion but from what ive read and seen. I think it will do quite well.

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith
...You know the saying?: You're either part of the solution, or part of the problem. Well....
I'm pretty much giving up playing games entirely and am starting training for a career in 3D-CG.
Gawd, I hope there will still be a Genre left once I finish schooling and get a portfolio Done.
Yeah I have been a Conan fan for a long time, but the whole console/PC combo scares me. I know what they've said but we'll have to wait and see on that one.
Definitely looking forward to something different.
I like the stuff that Bioware put out although the MMO industry is quite a different kettle of fish. I'm just not interested in any sort of aggressively level-based MMOs anymore so that rules out Vanguard or Conan. Not sure what format WAR is but if it's anything like DAoC I'll also be taking a pass.
Im pinning most of my hopes on Age of Conan
Seriously though, if its no good I could just about drop this genre. We wait years for one or two games to release only to find they are exact copies of the one or two before them.
If I had known my 6 years of UO was going to be the highlight of my MMO gaming career..... I would have just quit right then.

The problem is so many amateur companies are jumping on the MMO bandwagons and are promising everything the player wants. So for years and years we get a bag full of eye candy and so on and so forth only for us to be utterly dissapointed when its available for the public.
For all you guys and gals who remembered the hype behind Dark and Light. It was literally the MOST anticipated game out there for about two years. It blew mmorpg.com's hype meter right out of the water. Everyone was absolutely digging the screenshots of the world and the infamous sky dive and shield snow surfing. Even the talks about a perpetual weather system (of rain and SNOW!!) blew our socks off. Then we saw DnL for what is really was. Just talk and doctored screenshots. It went from the most hyped MMO to one of the absolute ones to STAY away from.
I remember 2003 being a VERY good year for MMOs. Anarchy Online had finally started to iron out there bugs and it was sci fi (the more sci fi the merrier....if I play another fantasy MMO im going to vomit. Out of the MMO list we have 19 are fantasy, 6 are sci fi, and about 3 or so are historical), SWG had just came out in all its pre NGE glory (before the DEVs who were bored got dumb and creative and the same time....bad mix), EVE showed itself and broke the mold of MMOs (as did SWG) and Final Fantasy was about to be live for us FF fans who were ignorant of the non solable after lvl 16 rule lol.
I would probably say between 1998 to 2003, MMOs were in their golden age, Developers weren't afraid to take risks and they even published their own material without signing their souls away to the Big companies. After 2003, MMOs steadily got dumber. Even the good ones in 2003 got dumber (SWG being a BIG example: first and only MMO I have ever seen where the game got buggier and more terrible as it got older).
MMOs as we old schoolers know it has gone the way of the dodo. Vanguard was the last straw for me. I know many of you love it. But, man.....after following it for three years and having experience in the MMO field for ten years, I felt like someone bashed my teeth in when I first logged on about 2 months ago.
Now highly anticipated games are now poop. Dungeons and Dragons (the mother and creator of all playable RP games {debatable}) turned out to be the biggest loser in 2006; who woulda thought? Takes talent to tear a great series to the level of chicken crap. My hats off to you Turbine for making the impossible possible. NGE SWG...well...self explanatory. Even Smedly himself admitted it was a bad idea (but it's SOE dim witted clueless thinking that doesn't revert SWG to the way it was SUPPOSE to be).
I don't know. Im keeping my eyes peeled on StarGate, StarTrek, ShadowRun, and Conan. If they fail to deliver I am going to quit MMOs all together and create my own laboratory of evilness and say
No Sony Online Entertainment, I Don't want you to publish me you crazy freaks

No kidding, I am so sick of the MMO's of today. I am actually really dissapointed in EA for not allowing UO2 to be released. I suppose all the best designers got picked up by the UO dev team? Becaue the MMO's of today are absolutely terrible. I havent played an MMO in a little over a year now, just waiting for something decent, and I do mean decent to be released. My hopes of a great game like UO have all but vanished. I just hope a decent game like DAOC is released. Maybe WAR, maybe AoC, who knows. I was hoping for Vanguard but since nobody seems to be able to say anything good about it other then its graphics, I guess that I will pass that game also.
If not MMO's then what? Nothing seems to be fun anymore.

After BioWare, they are my MAIN hope.
I always know the old priest in you has some wisdom!
BioWare is like Richard LionHeart on a crusade...while all these bastards are abusing the land! Stargate is definitely high on my hype as well, after all...Zeb, aka a designer for Stargate, make Brad dream up to the point that he name his company Sigil just after PoP pisses him...Sigil, the city from Planescape IS from Zeb's work!
Zeb has worken a LOT with BioWare in the past, so he prolly learn a LOT in humility and kindness! I am honestly thinking Stargate is going to be great, of course it might turn anything, but they did at least recruit the right folks on the design, so the first feedbacks we have are encouraging...yet, we can't judge yet, too early. They have to work...HARD.
Been named BioWare or Zeb won't create a good MMO out of thin air, they have to work hard for it. I trust in them, but they need to remain on Earth...and then we will be happy and spoiled players. As long as they don,t waste their time reading me or you or fanbois and actually create a great game! They deserve our praise for PAST achievements, but if they enjoy these, they should work hard on earning more, in the future! I know they can, but human nature is lazy! Don't want the best to go lazy, nope, they have to be kept in check!

I hear you people.
I also had Vanguard as my last hope (tm) . No i was not in beta, nor did i test the game - but i can not disregard 99%bad hype about this game. Coupled with fact that only Cray equivalent computers can run it above 14 fps ... what can i say
My problem is
I am mmo addict , and not having a mmo to play is making me...well..pretty pissed right now
And any other (presumably) decent mmo is coming out earliest 2008 !!!!!
OMFG!!!! What will I do !!!!
I am even considering playing EVE , although it is certanly not my cup of tea. But it is only mmo worth mentioning today...
What should i do

i was a big fan of UO myself, and i've followed my older brother into all the MMO's hes been to...like UO,EQ,EQ2,Lineage2,AO,DAOC,WoW, and so much more but u get the point....one of my PERSONAL favorite was earth and beyond...and it was the first space mmo i tried and loved it until EA close the servers...anyway its been 2 years now and i've been on and off going back to the games i played....the only one im hoping to play is Infinity quest for earth, although its going to be a few years in the making to come, i jsut hope it is kinda like or much better than earth and beyond...
Like most of you all that have been posting in the last few recent days, I'm as dissapointed as it gets wtih Vanguard. My boyfriend has been in Beta since phase 3 but we were hoping for something great from Beta 5.
At this point, barring an absolute miracle, I just don't think Vanguard has a shot at being anything other than a mediocre experience.
I'm pitting alot of hope on the hidden Bioware project also but I'm still holding some hope for games like The Chronicles of Spellborn, STO and a few others.
All is not lost friends, we'll get something decent at some point, don't worry.

Ragnarok Online 2 > All other mmo's in development and released.
It just had its first non-NDA beta in Korea and it isn't a burning wreck too.
A couple of them show a lot of promise. And 1 or 2 that people are expecting to be duds are going to surprise and do very well for themselves. A couple that have been badly over-hyped are going to dissapoint as well.
Vanguard: Will do ok... overhyped a bit but still not a BAD game. But it's not the 'next great game' as some of the 'vanatics' would have you believe. It does have some technical issues though... if Sigil doesn't smooth them out they're in for a very bad launch. I suspect they'll get the majority of the kinks out by release. Vanguard won't ever be a blockbuster but it'll be a solid release with a decent playerbase. Not going to be my game though. I already played EQ2
Unfortunately that is the only one who's NDA has been lifted at this point. Once the others start lifting I'll let you know how I find them
I will say, however, that 2007 will not be nearly the dissapointment that 2006 was. And, in fact, a few people (if they try them) will find some real gems that may very well become their "new MMO home".
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Still in: A couple Betas
If so, that would own. Hard.
How do you kill that which has no life?

It kills cats... and bandwidth .
And I know Ratty... you're not alone in that one. We'll get there though, come hell or high water at least one release won't be complete crap.
Errr... Let's hope anyways.

I am video games addict. And the only games i like right now are MMOs.
I am actually becoming seriously depressed if i can not play a good game.
Not kidding. And i know what i am talking about because i am also cigarette smoker , so not having a decent game to play for me is almost like suddenly running out of cigs when your body goes on a nicotine crave mod. And you start desperately searching the house for some pack you lost somwhere. Even being ready to drive to other town on sunday morning to buy a package ... (btw - if you are non smoker who is reading this - learn something )
So yes , when i say i need mmo now, i mean it !
