Hmmz, sex and MMO's. Maybe in the near future there will be more possible then people would think. I've seen the weirdest USB devices and sexual toys that can connect to the computer. I'm in a guild-wars guild with males AND females aging 18 to 51, 33,3% female, 66,6 male. We once started a discussion on our forum why most guys use female chars (in our guild). Some of the guys in the guild said, they'd never had sex before, so they create a female char to still have "some form of contact" with a female, even when it is non-existent.
I also know lots of people whom don't have girlfriends/or ever had one. Somehow i can support a MMO for those people whom are too shy for "going out" but still, it's not the reaal thing. I myself am married and for me, such MMO would only be fun to see in an open beta :P
A small conclusion.

I'm just calling it like I see it. It's not uncivilized to voice your opinion. It is uncivilized to bash someone for their opinion in a public forum because you don't agree with it. Thank you for calling me a jackass. Thank you for correcting my usage of a colloquialism based on a spelling (pedophile) that is both accepted in dictionaries and used in academic literature on the subject. As you probably know, the term "paedophile" sees heavier use in the British Isles because it is truer to the Latin root (ped = foot, paedos = child). Of course, even the residents of the UK pronounce it incorrectly if they trying to stay true to the Latin root word (paedos is pronounced pie-dose). Finally, thank you for putting words in my mouth. When I included deviants in the list of people I said inhabit virtual worlds with sex present, I was referring exclusively to pedophiles, not to furries. I don't consider furries to be deviant or immoral. As a note, though, the furry subculture is one that sees heavy overlap with many other sexual subcultures as well as fringe fetishes (as evidenced by the babyfur community on Second Life). In addition, there are a dozen or so variations of sexual fetishes that are nearly unique to furries. Do you really think most psychological or sociological literature on the furry subculture describe it as a healthy lifestyle choice? No. Most papers detail a subculture based around a common inability to deal with sex on the same level as a normal person. These views, while coming from reputable researchers from reputable universities, are largely conjectural rather than scientific, but there is some truth to these early assessments. Furryism isn't deviant, but I'm not going to say it's normal. That's all secondary, though. What I'm saying is that, at present, sex in virtual worlds is so poorly done that it only appeals only to people who must act out what they can't in the real world. Amidst a sea of commercial pornography with attractive actors performing every fetish that can be explored in the real world, as well as imitating those that can't, this stuff is just not aesthetically pleasing enough to appeal to a broader audience. I stand by my statements. Hopefully this has made them more clear to you.
I could've cared less about this thread other than a quick laugh over my morning coffee...until I read your posts. Your tone is elitist and you come off as someone who is proclaiming themselves more knowledgeable and better than others....and your audience is an online roleplaying gaming forum...in other words, mainly young people who are here for fun and to chat about playing video games (not to be lectured by some wannabe online professor). Lose the 'holier than thou' attitude and chill out
I think the success of such a game would depend on how it was executed. A game based purely on meeting, dating and getting laid would become tiresom for most players pretty fast I think, so there would have to be more to it. I think if sex was included as part of the game rather than the whole point of the game then that would make for a better gaming experience and could be an interesting innovation in mmorpgs.
From what I read of Sociolotron, the sex side of the game seemed to be what it was originally marketed to be, but things changed over time. Players asked for more and different content until eventually the sex was just an extra option, giving players the freedom and game mechanics to include that as part of their game if they chose to do so. By all accounts, most players seem to enjoy the fact that the game is over 18s only, and including sexual content in the game gives them a more mature player base.
When it comes to role-playing games, I think that the more options there are, the better the game. I think that those on this thread asking why anyone would want to have sex online instead of in real life are overlooking the role-play element in these games. People don't just play them because there aren't dragons and space ships in real life, they also play them to be able to act and behave in ways that they wouldn't in real life. MMORPGs give people opportunities to become generals, guild leaders, famous warriors etc, and we could easily argue that if they want to do that, why don't they join the army or join a street fighting gang. I could easily see the attraction of playing an outrageous flirt in game, when IRL you might be shy, or playing a slut when IRL you would only ever sleep with a significant other.
I think you are right there. If there is a sexual oriented MMO out there, maybe the role playing factor should be highter than the sexual content. Why? Because feeling that you are good at sex mostly outways sex itself. In a MMO with a good role plying story, you can then be indeed be the best flirt or play a pimp or something like that. Whatever else someone does behind is computer, i don't have to see, but mostly it's the status of your character that counts.
Come to think of it, it can be fun to have a char called "Ron Jeremy" which is lvl 60 and has a good "skillbar"
Well, if you google the words "sex mmo" you can get some results. There are some MMO's in development.
BTW, with this title, you might as well have posted a giant neon sign saying underage teens look here. DO NOT to them is the signal to do it anyway just to spite you.
I think if you did a psychological profile on a cross section of online gamers you'd find that the mentality they most often exhibit is borderline psychopath. Something about being safely tucked away in a room in a home with a computer allows a lot of people to be the @-hole they always wanted to be. I guarantee you an online sex MMO is not going to attract the most mentally stable examples of humanity.
Really though, not everything has to be done via a computer. Believe it or not there was a time not so long ago where humanity had to function entirely without a computer or any electronics what so ever.
P.S. To the chap who thought I played EVE, I am an ex-EVE player. My sig is meant to be a slight.
lol. I knew my reply would get some heat. I act like a total.. well.. asshole online, because I simply can. Am I immature and such like that in reallife? No not even close, but do I give a flyingf*? NO. Reason being is I don't care nor ever will care about you or what you have to say about me. Thus giving me 100% freedom with nothin to hold back what I want to say. So to those trying to "insult" me go right ahead. I could careless.
Now that i'm done with that. Back on topic. It's a stupid idea. As I said before it's a loser game for losers who don't have the balls to go out and get some poontang. Except for the few that'll play it for laughs and that's the furthest i'd go with it. Other then that it's freaken stupid. Don't give me this crap how I shouldn't bash on someones concept. I'll bash it all I want, because IT IS F'KIN STUPID. Got enough weird ass people into some weird ass shit. Don't need them gettin' off to games now. Be hearing stories about people rapeing their computers and ending in tragedy. Then we'll have cracked out computers on street corners. It'll be a sad day in computer life.
Hell even a loser like me managed to find a girl and well i'm engaged. So hope isn't lost after all. There is a girl for everyone. It just takes getting off your fat lazy ass to do it. I lost 70 pounds eating right and working out quickly. It really helped my image. So fat ass get off yee butt and do sumpen already besides bitch about being lonely. As for the other people.. Sorry there is no cure for ugly. Just find another ugly =(
Also the reply about most people in sex games are guys. That's sooo freaken true. An attractive woman wouldn't need such a game, because well they could go get laid any day any time. I put money on that. So basically it'll be a homo infested game. HAH have fun.
To everyone insisting that this kind of "Sex" is somehow immature and inferior to RL-sex, I pose the question: Which is more dangerous? Look at all the complications that exist in the Real World Dating and Prostitution which do not in VR:
-Drug Addicts
-STD's and genital parasites
-Getting "Rolled"
-Beer Goggles & Hangovers
-Costly Alcohol exploitation
-Date Rape
-Bar/Club fights
-Jealous & Violent Spouse
Sure it's inferior to a MEANINGFUL relationship, but how many people go out looking for those? The natural state of human behavoir always trends more towards recreational stimulation so game devs and profiteers might as well just embrace that. I mean if you're single but want to have casual sex every day or every week or whenever, it might as well be as sanitary and safe as possible if the technology eventually supports it. Women can pretty much already have it this way b/c all they need for stimulation for the most part is the fantasy itself. For un-imaginative guys, the Optical and Physical technology will just have to catch up I guess (Can you say pocket-pussy with USB connection? I can!). The only thing missing will be Pheromone generation and I'm sure biologists or neurologists will eventually figure out a way to simulate those as well.
I think this is a brilliant, funny and thought provoking post. I wish I had written it ! lol
The use value that MMOs have to develop explicit sexual content for disabled people, older people and those who have difficulties establishing good sexual relations in the material world is potentially very liberating. The fantasy aspects of MMOs also have the potential to widen people's sexual horizons and allow them to explore things they cannot (for whatever reason) otherwise participate or indulge in. As iller suggests much of what is considered good or bad about Adult and X-rated MMOs depends on what we mean by "sexuality" and whether we believe meaningful sexual relations can take place in "virtual" as well as "real" environments - although I don't think the distinction between the two dimensions holds any longer.
It seems to me that much of this discussion also involves deciding on our sexual preferences. If someone believes "healthy sexual relations" are primarily based on a monogomous marriage between an ethnically identical man and women, that is one type of sexual preference. On the other hand, if someone thinks that sexual pleasure can be gained from masturbating to on-line imagery or fantasy material, or even having an on-line cyber sexual relationship primarily through textual excitation then this is yet another expression of sexual preference. We might sum up our contemporary situation as a "postmodern libidinal politics".
Ultimately, MMOs will begin to cater for fetishes or the fetishization of virtual sexuality. Again this can be pitched at different levels and accommodate different sexual preferences or politics. Fetish sex sells well and begins to lift the taboos off conventional understandings of sexuality. In other words, fetish can broaden the horizons. A definition of fetish is nicely developed in the following:
"The fetish is always a meaningful fixation of a singular event or imagery: it is above all a "historical" object, the enduring form and force of an unrepeatable event". This object is "territorialized" in material or virtual space (an earthly or image driven matrix) whether in the form of a geographical locality, a marked site on the surface of the human body (tatoos, shoes etc), or a medium of inscription or configuration defined by some portable or wearable thing. This territorialized object is also "personalized" in the sense that it evokes an intensely personal response from individuals. This intense relation to the individual's experience of his or her own living self through an impassioned response to the fetish object is always incommensurable with the social value codes within which the fetish holds the status of a material (or virtual) signifier. It is in these "disavowals" and "perspectives of flight" whose possibility is opened in the clash of incommensurable differencesthat fetish might be identified as both the site for the formation and the revelation of ideology and value-consciousness". William Pietz, 1989, "The Problem of Fetish"
So fetish is radical, alternative and gets played out at the limits of acceptable norms and values. Adult and X-Rated MMOs are likely to become (financially viable) sites for the formation and indulgence with sexual fetish objects as well as more "normative" objects. We see how conventional stereotypes of male and female are already (narrowly) constructed in this way in dress, costume, fashion and character building in MMOs. But MMOs will also offer the opportunity to develop distinctive fetishized relations that cannot easily be obtained elsewhere. These may be fetishized aspects of alterative sexual preferences (such as BDSM or D/S) or extensions of already commonplace fetish preoccupations. The inevitable blurring of genres between Adult Sex orientated MMOs and fantasy gaming MMOs (the conventional type discussed in these forums) will be a moral, economic and imaginative test of sensibilities for all gaming developers and ultimately game players.
Psychoanalysis appears to show that pain plays no part in the formation of the purposive aspect of the instinct drives.
I can't believe that I didn't think of this sooner, but I just thought of a reply to the sex in RL being better than cybering thing. Think of all the things that you actually can't do, sexually, in real life.
I'm not talking about the standard taboos against things like incest, bestiality, etc. I'm also not talking about famous people that you're never going to bone. I'm talking about sex with a female Centaur. I'm talking about sex in zero gravity. I'm talking about harems of robot sex slaves. While these games would pale in comparison to the "reality" of such acts, they'd be a way to experiment with these ideas. Going back to the furry thing, who wouldn't do Lola bunny if given a chance? I'm not a furry, and I would.
I'd have to pass on the female centaur thing though. The smell of horse shit is not sexy.
If you look around this post and many others talking about the same subject you can see why society today is so fucked up.
People accept senseless violency and rampant murder and destruction over the act of making love. Its funny that in the online world, it is 100 times worst to pretend to fall in love with someone then to pretend to decapitate them. And that is more fucked up then anyone who has the ability to get off to a digital image.
In society it is supposed to be the otherway around, sex is supposed to be accepted while death and destruction should be rejected.
But its good to see new mmos are slowly pushing what they can do interms of nudity and sex appeal, games like 2 moons, and age of conan, there are already a few Sex oriented MMO but arent even known about because people are so ignorant they actually have the nerve to insult people who play these games. Telling them they should get a GF/BF in real life, sex in game is wrong, etc, all the while they are getting ready to put a bullet in the head of their opponent in their favourite fps, or ram their sword into another in their favourite mmo.
These are the people who retard society, who wonder why their kids turn out emo, who freakout when their children hear some minor foul langauge on tv, but allow them to watch cartoons that revolve around fighting. If you honestly belive sex has no place in a roleplaying game then you should stop playing role playing games. And if you honestly believe sex is worst then violence then you should get yourself checked out period.
Then theres the arguement that there are no female gamers online, so is it that sex is wrong in general or are 100% of online gamers extremly homophobic? I am just interested to find out why our games cannot progress devolopmentally.
It is only a matter of time before sex creeps into games, and people use MMOs as a makeshift online dating service. With online dating going up the past 5 years, does the fact that people seek it in games actually surprise anyone?

{ Short Version: If Adult Gamers/Designers don't accept fringe fetishes or explore them on their own terms, they may be forced to cope with them at a later date under the terms of players who take them to extremes }
fantasy gaming MMOs (the conventional type discussed in these forums) will be a moral, economic and imaginative test of sensibilities for all gaming developers and ultimately game players.
Interesting.... This contrast between what's considered a fetish and what most claim is "normal". To other people, the Fetish is a Taboo...sometimes even a source of revulsion. To the person who enjoys the "fetish" it's the opposite, it's a source of comfort or familiarity, or atleast a something that really helps them stay interested. It's also a major source of personal frustration to me as I read this thread because so many people insist on doing eaxctly what you're warning against.... in that they're applying some kind of Moral Superiority to one Sexual Preference over many others as if one is healthier than the others based purely on the content that it focuses on rather than Medical reasoning and execution(Stimulatory Merits).
I wonder how this would translate to tasks in the MMO'? What if players avoid one path/task of character progression in the game b/c they find it somehow repulsive or worse; Boring, while others effectively "farm" it b/c it satisfies their fav fetish and keeps them interested a lot longer. Often times in MMO's, I lose interest when Weapon types that I don't care for continually "drop" while I'm only trying to get a certain type that I decided I wanted to find on that particular day. At some point it gets tiring enough that I log out embittered by the thought that the Designers only wish to cater to Sword and Wand users when I just want a cool looking Axe. ...And because people seem so prone to injecting Moral Authority where it does not belong in healthy sexual relations, one would have to wonder just what kinds of conflicts would develop between the players themselves, especially if any of them allow sexual involvement to translate into emtional involvement.
(Often moral values don't hinder Sex, but rather act as prohibition and THAT is what prompts Obsessive/Compulsive responses in the Psyche and then turns into reprehensible actions or behavior.... just like the age-old Gamer debate that acting out something violent in a game MAY actually alleviate the inclination to act it out in REALITY)
Hopefullly though, the game would allow smooth transitions between Sexual Preferences and simply Introduce players to them gradually by maintaining some level of control over the communities within them. The biggest Concern that seems to exist among Gamers anytime this comes up( again )is their fear that major parts of the game could become "infested" with sexual extremes that "Squick" them. ...Just like Hardcore Gamers and P.K.s (player killers) are seen as extremes to Casual players or players who "Turtle"... often insisting that the Extremists ruin the economies and balance of the game. Just maintaining a balance in that area is already a full time Job for the entire Design team... one which WAY TOO MANY companies already appear to be trending towards Negligence in their responsibilities for.
1) Since there have been dumby terminals there has been cybersex. Just because cybersex is a popular 'sport' *coughs* doesn't imply it's a good topic to handle in an MMO as an integral part of the gameplay. Why? Because it doesn't follow that people would pay to do the same thing they can do for free via Social MU*s and Second Life. So your business model surrounding a 'sex only' MMO isn't going to last for long no matter what ploy you try, be it item shop or whatever. It just won't sell on the Internet since sex doesn't sell on it like it does on other media outlets.
2) Cybersex is all well and good, but why design a game around in the first place? I know there are a few board games that are orientated toward sex, but most of those integrate it with satire and other humorous ploys. Are you going to make this more like Leisure Suit Larry or make it more realistic? If you do make it more realistic, expect people to reject it out right, since people prefer the romantic, exotic, and humorous to gritty dark 'realism'. If you want proof, just go and look at the list of the top games here at MMORPG.com and you'll see not many are gritty or uber realistic [not even EvE is close to realistic].
3) ... Nothing here to add, just that I wanted to say, I'm not trying to bash folks for attempting this project, but I just want them to know that they chosen the hardest possible play style model in the world today. Sex is complicated, just by itself, and cybersex doubly so. If you fudge this attempt up, you're toast.
I think i agree with what 'lady' just said.... a "sex only" mmo might be a little weak. I can see all kinds of sex related activities as a kind of add-on, addendum to an mmo, but it needs to be just a part of the overall gameplay, not everything. (maybe it's because I'm getting old, but there really isn't that much to it is there? I mean, once you've done everything hundreds of times... well, maybe as an activity to try and imagine doing something you've never thought of before? sex with centaurs? lol)
Anyway, if you had a heavily adult-oriented type of game, 95% of the players would be teenage kids, and it would be them exploring and imagining different situations etc. Kind of a sex-sim game, where you didn't have to endure your mistakes... But then because everyone is pretending, anything they think they have learned would most likely be wrong and not carry over into real life. It's this effect of the genre that I think would mess up kids more than help them.... just speculating of course.
From a moral point of view, sex in MMOs will definately increase over time. It's inevitable. And I don't see anything wrong with it really. From a commercial point of view, I'm suprised there's not more of it already. Sex sells... period. But a game with nothing but sex?
Totally... Porno in general gives everyone, not just kids, fucked up expectations of what sex is.
But that doesn't mean parents and activists are right in protesting this Phoney-sex. The reality is that they're not even discriminating in the key differences that seperate the two, they just don't want EITHER activities happening, Period. ...Which is hello... IRONY too ... because it's such an incredibly unrealistic expectation as well.
As for Sex-only... if the games anything like SL, most time online would probably be spent doing all the setup-work. Anyone at a Porn studio could tell you it's 98% stage work, fluffing, surgery, gymwork, and awkward positions just to get to that 2% of the written Script and Money shots. ...No, most likely if a MMO like this came out that accurately reflected the creation of Porn, "GRIND" would be the biggest complaint, not "too much sex".
There may someday be a cyber sex MMO, but I do not believe that all MMOs will go mature.
The crux of this idea I believe is that sex sells, therefore MMOs will become pornographic. I don't believe that.
Society has changed and shifted, but it's not ready to make graphic sexual activity an open experience. As such, it will always be considered a "Mature" only subject. That said, games will gear themselves to the Teen Market. Like Hollywood, gamemakers know that the Teen market is the largest market, therefore has the most money.
One could counter this arguement with GTA and Halo's popularity and that they are M rated titles. I would point out that they did not have any graphic sex (only suggested sex in GTA). Society is more forgiving of violence than it is of sex, thus though these games have a Mature rating, they would slip under parents radar. The current wave of government attempts at regulation are being fed by the Sex Scandal in GTA (Hot Coffee), not the violence. Without Hot Coffee, there would still be grumbles but that's about it.
Originally posted by airhead I think i agree with what 'lady' just said.... a "sex only" mmo might be a little weak
About two months ago, I would have agreed, however, that's when a friend of mine sent me connection info for a Neverwinter Nights server with the comment "You won't believe this sh-t...". This was an Adult Oriented Persistent NWN Server which had custom "Adult Content", skins, emotes, everything. I couldn't believe someone made a world like this, but what was more amazing was the number of people on it! So out of curiosity, I wondered if this was just one persons crazy fantasy and in looking further I found there's a ridiculous number of "Adult Oriented" persistent servers out there.
So people are out there playing, but not paying. I imagine with the graphics improvements in NWN2, these worlds will just get more insane.

Here's my rant on the issue.

So do you have to buy items for... you know.....
I'm new to this web site...
Be nice to me plz!
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
I want a ".hack dojinshi" MMO plz! xD
