To buy the expansion or not...

Okay I bought WoW the day it came out and played it for 9 months.  I quit in September 2005 for a variety of reasons and have not renewed my account since.  I had one level 60, but was sick of waking up early on Sunday mornings to spend 6+ hours in Molten Core in the hope of getting some nice shiny purple item that will improve my stats by a few measly points making little to no difference in the grand scheme of things.  I had no life back then and I admit it.  I would stay home and miss family dinners just to raid with my guild.  I hated that every level 60 of the same class looked nearly identical, that we were promised hero classes in the first year of the game and even the expansion has no new classes.  I hate Blizzard after playing WoW because they take forever to patch, lie, and their idea of "soon" is 3-6 months.  Those are just some of my gripes with the game.  There are more.

However, as the release of the expansion nears, I find myself drawn in by it.  The new areas and cities look amazing, and I love to explore.  As well, we will finally be getting new spells and talents which I was always begging for.  The new races are interesting as well.  It will be nice to finally level to 70 and I hear that Blizzard is cutting down on the raids, making them smaller and less time consuming.  This is all good news.  I'm disappointed that no new classes are being added, but there's not much that can be done about that.

Now that I am no longer working part-time I will have time to play an MMO again.  Sure I'm in grade 12 and I'll have less time than back in grade 10 when my biggest worry was reaching the next level, but I'm really bored in general and need something in my life.  Anyways I'm debating whether I should get the expansion or not.  I have a good friend who might get it also and we'd start new characters together.

Your advice is appreciated.  I'm looking for constructive suggestions, not people bashing the game.  I know it's weaknesses and strengths, and I'm wondering if the expansion is going to bring some new life to it.

Stay strong and dont go back to WoW.

My #1 reason so far, and I have too many to list, is the fact that they allow Alliance to be Shamans and Horde to be Paladins.

This, to me, is Blizzards way of giving in to ALL the cry-babies that were crying "nerf Pallys or nerf Shamans," depending on the side they were on.

I think a game with only 8 classes is pathetic enough, but when they made even the Horde-Alliance sides look the same its the final stroke (cough lol) for me. Indeed, for an EXPANSION, you'd think they add a NEW class and or TWO new classes (one to each side).

Imo, an MMORPG should have a direction and it DOESNT need to appeal to as many people as possible.  When you try to appeal to every single cry-baby out there, your mmorpg will be of lower standard for everyone of these people.

WoW was my last major MMORPG (6-8 months subscribing), and now I would rather play no mmorpg at all (and I do not atm) than to back to WoW.

Sorry for flaming but its just my $0.02.

I agree, it's truly sad that Blizzard is making the horde only and alliance only classes available to all.  It is their way of showing they screwed up, big time, and want to fix it.  I think they still have no idea how to balance the current classes.  But adding none is just ridiculous.  The current classes get so boring after awhile.  They don't like to take chances with anything new, which is why we still don't have hero classes (they have been on the drawing board apparently for 3 years now lol).

I also wish they sit down and make different skins for races.

You made an undead, you look like every single undead there is.  You made a night elf? Guess what?

Combined with the fact that ALL classes have access to the same exact powers, there is absolutely no uniqueness.  I used to be afraid of "gimping" a character but after playing WoW, I sooo long for the game where I'd actually have to start multiple chars so I can try out different builds before I get whats right for me.

And the talents didnt do much for uniqueness in WoW because most of the people spread the point in exactly the same way (cough pallys and devine shields cough).

    Once again, sowwy for twolling.

It isn't trolling, I completely agree with you.  They said hero classes would be in the game AT LAUNCH over 3 years ago so that you could make your character unique.  But they couldn't get that done so they quickly came up with the idea of talents.  However talents make for SO little differentiation.  There is no point where you can pick one spell or the other; every person of one class has the EXACT same spells which I just hate.  Add that to the fact that you can't change your appearance at all and, well, it sucks.  Blizzard seems to be completely against dyes or anything that could add some difference.

Peenk I agree with you, when you are a designer of a game especially a MMORPG you have to stick to your bases. You developed the game, why change your image of your game to better suit some cry babies. There will always bee cry babies. You need to have an idea in mind for where the game is going from expansion to expansion, and try not to stray far from that idea.

Perhaps you should go outside with your friends once in a while? If you can't get off WoW and do something else, to a point you must quit, then you got a huge problem. I used to play DAoC alot, then I left and went to WoW, since then, I haven't played as much and I don't feel burn out anymore. There are plenty of other things to do besides playing games. You either decide you want to play and lose everything, or control it and play once in a while, for fun.

I got the game 12/26/04 and played it 14 months straight. I slowly convinced my friends to play and we all had a blast leveling together. I got 2 60's and a 54 that I'm working on getting to 60 now but last year i took a much needed long break from the game. I basicly stopped playing towards the end of February and picked it back up in October. I plan on getting the x-pac. I have not pre ordered it and it won't kill me if it's sold out come 5pm on the 16th, about the time i get out of work. The only real reason I started playing again was to have some fun with my friends. I don't really even care if the game sucks at 70 cause come spring, I'll be giving WoW up for my Harley again

Blizz delete inactive accounts after 6 months =D

The expansion puts many things right IMHO, smaller raids max 25, no more zerg 40mans, 8 our of the 10 new dungeons can be run by 5man teams.

You get a whole new world to explore, i read some place the outlands are a little bigger as 1 of the original landmasses.

I can see a good 3-4 months of leveling form 60-70, im not a no-lifer, spend about 20-25hr a week on the game, remebr you wont be grinding/questing all the time, you'll be exploring.

Much improved crafting, recipies that are usfuls even at lvl 70.

2 things I wish blizz add:

Dyes to change colour of clothing

    Solo dungeon content

I don't think that is true, I have had an inactive account for almost a year and it's still working fine.

I preordered, cant wait to play. I hate the raid side, but then ill only subscribe for  maybe two months, enough time to get to 60 with a BE and explore draenor. When I hit 70? Ill quit.

I agree, some new classes would be nice. Hero classes would be excellent.

yes.. my bad.. just found this on offical site:

Blizzard’s current policy is never to delete active characters of inactive accounts. If you reactivate your account at any point in the future, your characters will be ready to play. If this policy changes at any point in the future, it will be announced on www.worldofwarcraft.com.

must of been thinking of a different game. maybe from my SWG days?

Did I ever say anything about me sitting at home being a computer nerd now?  I was one back two years ago, and I quit because I got bored and wanted to have more of a life.  I realized how stupid and how big a waste of time it was to spend days and nights raiding, and there was really nothing else to do at level 60 aside from that.  I do have a life now and am not planning on playing nearly as much as I did back when.  Lots has changed, I have changed, and I'm just interested in having a good time and enjoying the game once again.

I wonder why more people dont pvp. Is the prospect of getting owned that mind blowing? Well we know a lot of WoW fans pvp but the ones that come to this site appear to be the fluffy carebears that thought they had to raid or die lol. I only visited end game instances like 3 times. Earned all my gear from honor and some blues from casual dungeons like dire maul

Cause PvP in WoW is not all that appealing?

I am a big fan of Shadowbane..... now THATS PvP.  Only better PvP you can get is from an online FPS.

Plus, why the hell would I want to GRIND PvP ? Its suppose to be for fun not so I can get stupid items.  You want to test your skills against human players not the fact that you have better gear and thus unfair advantage(sp?).

I really didn't find much appeal in PVP when I played.  I did the battlegrounds a bit, but that was back in the days of the old honour system where it was based on how well everyone did overall.  You had to literally PVP all day to get any progress.  Now if I'm not mistaken you earn points with which you can buy the PVP items which is much better.  However, doing the same battlegrounds over and over just got tedious.  There was no point of raiding a town because of the massive guard spawns that would appear and the lack of any incentive whatsoever for doing so.

    Well, it is easy stargazer.

The BC will not be a revolution in mmorpg exactly like WoW wasn't. But what they do, they do really really well. Don't listen to the "omg, horde got paladins now, i quit" crowd, they really have no idea what they are speaking about and blizzard had very valid reasons to do so in the expansion, beside.. i will take the 9 WoW classes over the 24 EQ2 classes or the 40+ DAoC classes ANYDAY, at least those 9 are well made and ALL play differently from each other with no copied skills from one to the other.

So, consider BC will give you more of the 1-59 stuff, did you liked it? yes? great, get the expansion and you can look forward to some nice months of that old fun. From what i heard it is even much better than before, quests are better, the zones are huge and better... you get the picture, everything is better.

About the end game, the pvp has been changed to be more casual friendly, there will be more world pvp opportunity in the expansion, including fun "bomb the base" scenarios and griffin bombing runs. On the raid side, they got some reaaaaally interesting stuff, the cavern of times for example and Mount Hijal!! plus now it needs 25 people and many raids are now scarlet monastery or dire maul-like. in pieces so it doesn't take forever.

    So innovation but not revolution.

    SWG doesn't delete.

I hadn't played since June 2004.  I fired up my account 2 days ago to see what all has changed, and to use my 2 day Vet pass . . .ended up getting 111 days free somehow.  GO figure.  So 2.5 years without even logging into the forums, and my toons were alive and kicking.

ok well i played wow about a year ago,and now with burning crusade looming, i rejoined last week on a casual basis spending a few hours playing, and i must admit i am enjoying it, but this time i will not be playing for hours on end trying to get them nice purple drops, just a few hours a night and atm i am having a lot of fun by just limiting my game time on wow
  • jippyukjippyuk Member UncommonPosts: 95
Pretty much same as previous poster, been back about 2 weeks now after taking a year break when hitting level 60.

Get the whole "Have you only just turned 60" from players in game because of my terrible armour. But you know what? In pvp, ok I'll get smacked by alot of players with higher armour. But with a little skill and timing, you can still win a lot of the battles.

PvP isn't for some agreed... and grinding BG is also a bit tiresome.

TBC introduces an Arena System. Where you and friends for a kind of mini guild (2v2/3v3/5/5)

You then spawn in an have a 2v2 battle, with a leaderboard kinda system. The better you are, the more rewards you get.

Another time sink in effect, but 2v2 battles suddenly elimates the common zerging found in pvp battles at present. Will be interesting to see who dominates.

and the 1-60 in WoW was the most fun I've had in an MMO in a long time. Can't wait to do the 60 to 70 (though I wont be grinding as quickly this time round as I dont want to get bored during the levelling process)

I really think that WoW has a lot of good things going for it, and am really looking forward to picking up the new expansion.

After a nine month break, mine was fine.

I have ht expansion on pre-order and am not really intrested in playing more until it arrives.

If you're into PvP, don't bother because it is still awful. If you like raiding dungeon after dungeon and grinding numerous reputations, then by all means pick up the exp.

After taking 2 classes to 70 in beta there isn't any new ground breaking content or changes. Its the same old clear dungeon X to acquire gear to proceed to dungeon Y. But before you do you must become revered with so and so to gain the key to dungeon X. Just look up the mount hyjal requirements sometime.

Thanks for the response Volkmar.  I loved levelling from 1-59, it was amazing and lots of fun.  One of the main reasons I was extremely disappointed with level 60 was all of the 1-59 completely disappeared.  You could no longer improve your character by levelling up, only through items, and the thrill of visiting new zones was completely abolished.  There was nearly no point in questing anymore either except for a nice item reward which was rare.

I've heard levelling from 60-70 will take a few months which will be great.  The new zones look amazing from what I have seen and Outland looks fun to explore.  The caverns of time sound awesome, going back to the past and messing with the timeline is definitely my cup of tea.  And I won't be playing nearly as much as I did back 2 years ago, so it's good that raids aren't a major focus.

Still debating but I'm leaning toward getting it now.

  • narvanarva Member Posts: 37

If you like WOW as it is today then yes you would be crazy to not get the expansion.

However if you have been unhappy with the raid or die direction of the game don't let people fool you that much have changed. Of course there's going to be casual content but as good as 100% of that is inbedded in the leveling up content 61-70. Once you reach L70 is back to raid or die again.
