Vanguard: Saga of Heroes to hit store shelves on January 30th.
Sony Online Entertainment and Sigil Games Online today announced that the upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game Vanguard: Saga of Heroes will be released to retail outlets across North America and Europe on January 30, 2007, for the suggested retail price of US$49.99. A limited edition is also available for a suggested retail price of US$89.99.
Currently in beta, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes features vibrant environments reminiscent of oil paintings, a robust character customization tool and three distinct spheres of advancement in a seamless world without zoning or instancing. The immersive fantasy world is comprised of three massive, uniquely-themed continents for players to discover new creatures, new items and unlimited adventure. Players have complete freedom to roam the world whether flying dragons to islands in the sky or riding swift steeds to exotic lands.
"We are excited about delivering an MMO with immersive gameplay features that bring new depth and fun to the genre," said Brad McQuaid, CEO, Sigil Games Online. "Vanguard gives players the chance to live in a breathtaking world and try new things such as our diplomacy system and our unique approach to crafting. We're proud to be delivering this level of great gameplay for years to come."
"SOE is pleased to be working with Sigil to bring the eagerly anticipated Vanguard to fruition," said John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment, "Vanguard not only broadens our product portfolio in the online space, but will also be a welcomed addition to our already value packed all-in-one Station Access subscription line-up."
Players can pre-order Vanguard: Saga of Heroes now through a variety of methods including digitally and at retail, and by doing so, obtain an invitation to entrance into the live beta and, with purchase, access to the live servers up to three days prior to the official release. In addition, players that pre-order and purchase at retail will receive an exclusive in-game scroll that will allow their character to sprint for longer periods of time due to an endurance buff (one per account). Its great when people talk and really don't know what they are talking about because they fail to see the big picutre, nor understand business what-so-ever.
Most developers don't want to finish unrefined products or what the clueless call "beta releases", they do it because they have to. They do it because of pressure from investors, investors screaming at them that they have to start making money now or they are going to cut funding. Investors don't care if the product is a perfect finish or not, they only care about numbers, they don't know a thing about the business and need to put money into their own pockets. There is a veil of ignorance that blankets many gamers, which in turn generates great respones such as the ones above, i guess ignoarance is bliss, but if being misinformed is blissful then count me out.
This game is totally unfinished. Not to go into detail, but let's just say that if they release 30 Jan, they are just wanting folks to buy the game and then expect 40% to cancel and hope to keep the next 60% while they try to fix the problems.
Bad business practice.
Unforuntatly I pre-ordered the game.. but I can tell you, I can still cancel before it ships. Save my $50. IF the game improves over the next 2 weeks, which in my experience isn't possible with the number of broken issues in game (although props to them last night), I would honestly say another month,,, maybe March 1st would be a more prudent date of release.
i expected it to release in march, i remember a post about brad said, if everything goes well, it would be in march, this sounds like rushed, becous of something we dont know about
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

As a long time Closed Beta Player i have to say that i am more than impressed what Sigil has been able to do in the last few days. The game is taking leaps forward with every new patch. If this continues i can definately see the game ready end of the month.
Performance and stability is getting better aswell and after removal of the Beta code and packaging of the Client (right now it is an unpacked UT2.5 developer version we are testing with) we will get another significant boost in performance.
I am very optimistic right now.

You're the one who doesn't know what he's talking about. The MMO industry is the ONLY industry where this type of behavior is acceptable. In fact, in most all others it would be illegal!

Please. Spread you're BS somewhere else.
EVE was also ground breaking in many ways. Nothing new in VG.

I have pre-ordered and will be playing as soon as I can start!
(Beta doesn't have too much interest for me as I won't be keeping my chars, only lvl 8 atm)
Lol they already admitted that they ran out of money(taken from vanguardsoh.com):

People are saying Vanguard is being rushed out before it is finished, is that true?MMOs are unique in the gaming world because they are never truly finished. Vanguard will continue to be added upon and evolve for years to come. That said, no matter when you release there’s always going to be things you wish you had time to add or would have liked to have done but didn’t have time. Fortunately, with MMOs, we actually can add that stuff in later.

We don't want to rush things but like I said we have a solid launch date. People are crunching and working long hours but the financial reality is we need to launch commercially, and soon.
I know that is not the answer you want to hear, nor I, but it is what it is and I've always been straight up with you guys. We will have a lot of work to do post-launch and the first couple of months post-launch will be just as busy as beta 5 with lots of patches, bug fixes, new features, etc. In that sense, things won't change.
I promise you we are doing the best we can with the time we have, even though we all, the players and Sigil wish we had more time, but like I said, there are financial realities. We are still I believe the 2nd most expensive MMOG to-date after WoW and that is something, despite the desire to have more time, I have to be grateful to both MSFT and SOE for.

I like how he presents this like it was expected...cheap $oe won't give them funds...
Oh well.
But I wil support Brads game by buying after I upgrade. In 6months- no offense

Exactly what I was thinking as I read this post
No you were right, fan bois.. SOE really has nothing to do with this product, or the quality. No leverage at all.. They cant influence Sigil in any way.
LOL Here we go again!
"This is not a game to be tossed aside lightly.
It should be thrown with great force"
This is too early to release. I don't think Sigil can fix the problems that exist and polish the game before Jan 30th. I was expecting a March launch, which even seemed a bit rushed. Things have been improving for a long time now, however, so I am going to be getting the game eventually, but probably not on Jan. 30th.
Tolerating the problems in the game is something I do now because I am supposed to, as a beta tester. It will be interesting to see if all of these problems go away for the launch. I know there will be a lot of things the Sigil plans on addressing post-launch, but I am talking about the significant things that need fixing right away, the things that can really ruin the experience for you (like terrible lag, crashing, many graphics glitches, stuttering, etc.) These are things that need extra time so that players can enjoy the game while other less significant things are polished up.
I'll be tracking progress though, and will have my fingers crossed that everything will be polished up for Jan. 30th.
This move has SOE fingerprints all over it.
The game has promise, but this release is about 3-5 months to early easily.
I guess all I can say i good luck, but i really hate when companies do this. If the community would stop paying for these beta tests, the practice would stop, but i guess that isnt going to happen anytime soon.
Edit - on second thought, singling out SOE for this is a bit harsh, so many people do it, but I think given SOE's past they are going to take the brunt of the outrage when this thing launches unfinished.
Can't wait to start playing for real! It's gonna be a ton of fun!
The sad fact is that no matter what stage the game is in it still will not be good enough for the vast majority of those posting all the hate. Some people simply live to complain and it's an unfortunate side effect of the forums that the very nature of the message boards breed those type of people. It's the only valid reason they hang around and whine over and over and over and over again. They are all self proclaimed experts who's only hope is to cling with others that are like minded.
They are still missing 2 classes from the game! 2 entire classes are not even available and playable... Really, a majority of the changes they have made in the past week have been things that should have been fixed during closed beta. All I see are a bunch of lines about:
1. MOBs being stuck and relocated.
2. Skills that didn't work right being fixed.
3. Screwed up quests, descriptions, and dialogue.
4. A previously UNIMPLIMENTED aspect of the game (Diplomacy).
5. Errors with the crafting system (even on basic levels).
6. Poor client performance (that has been experienced since closed beta with little response until now).
Open beta is a time for stress-testing and fine-tuning. It is NOT the point where you work on the fundamentals of the game and the most very basic aspecs. It's expected that an MMO won't be completely "finished" when it releases, but what about PLAYABLE? They still have constant server crashes and expect them to be completely solved in 2 weeks? And I think anyone who wanted to play an Inquisitor would be pretty pissed about this whole situation. You can't even play the bloody class! It's like saying, well, we're going to release a D&D game, but you can't play elves or dwarves... If the game was finished, or at least close to it, I would be willling to give it more of a benefit of the doubt, but not right now. I have the game pre-ordered, but I'm seriously considering just returning it and waiting a few months to see if they can get their act together...
