A person who devotes most of his time to gaming. It is the person’s main interest/hobby. The person often want to play the newest game, or dedicate his time to one or a few more games to become very good at them. Good examples of this can be some World of Warcraft gamers. They use lots of hours each day to go questing with their mates, in search for the best equipment in the game. Hardcore gamers follow the gaming scene actively by participating in forums, reading news and articles about games.
Stereotypes: Hardcore gamers are often negatively stereotyped as asocial geeky adolescent males who seclude themselves in their rooms and play console and computer games for most of their day, not venturing outside their room except to shower, eat, and take bathroom breaks; and sometimes considering some of these optional. Another assumption is that they become violent or mad when they fail or loose in a game.
This if of course not the case most the time, even those these types do exist. Many hardcore gamers do have a perfectly rational and social life. They just see gaming as hobby and perhaps even a lifestyle.
A gamer who thinks old games are just as entertaining as new games. It’s the old school gamer that are responsible for creating emulators so you can play old games. An emulator is software that can emulate a NES, and render you able to play NES. They are also responsible for creating abandonware sites, where you can download old abandoned DOS games. They generally play lots of different games, mainly for the sake of good gameplay and entertainment.
Also known as a cyberathlete. They play a certain genre (fps, rts mainly since the competition in these areas are biggest) in order to become skilled within that genre. They play for the competition and enjoy winning over other people, which mean they almost only play online. Most competitive gamers strive to become “pro” so they can join a clan, join a league with that clan, earn sponsorships and ultimately, earn money from gaming. Also active in the gaming scene. They read forums, discuss playing styles and tactics. They follow top players and clans, like football fans follow their teams.
Gamer who doesn’t play a whole lot and has other hobbies than gaming. A casual doesn’t necessarily play the newest games. They aren’t active in the gaming scene, though they might want read reviews of certain games before they go out and buy them. Casual gamers play both single player and multiplayer, but their skill level is lower than the hardcore gamers and than the cyberathletes. An example of a casual gamer could be a person who enjoys playing a bit counter strike after school. He doesn’t really care whether he wins or losses, he just wants to relax. It could also be a gamer who plays The Sims, a game where there’s no real competition. It’s a game where you can take your time, and enjoy the game whether you’ve played it 2 hours or 50 hours.
A mixture of the two gaming classes. Two classes often mixed are Hardcore and Competitive gamer. They follow all the gaming scene and they often have a favorite cyberathlete they are cheering on. They use a lot of time practicing their favorite genre and might even have a secondary genre to relax on or even also play very competitively. It can of course also be a mixture of other classes.

My mind change me so much I can't even trust myself
I would say I'm a hybrid HardCore/Casual gamer
I just really depends on whats happening in my life... so i consider myself right in the middle
What's your Wu Name?
Donovan --> Wu Name = Violent Knight
Methane47 --> Wu Name = Thunderous Leader

10 hours a day? Pfft, newb.
Anyway, I'm mostly an extreme-hardcore gamer, with competitive tendencies.
casual. i dont have the time to play 16 hours of games per day.
I'm somewhere between hardcore and casual. I'm good at almost every videogame that I pickup and usually can school people within 30 minutes of the time that I begin playing it...but I don't play games all day every day, I also watch TV
If I was going to get into competetive gaming it would be in RTS though, I was really friggen good at starcraft at one point in time. I never really got into Warcraft 3, but I do enjoy Dawn of War.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
Hardcore as much as I can. Then competitive, but it is 75%-25% hybrid, competition is an extra, I will go to great lenght to help other, even losing a competition by doing so...as anyway, it developp competition in the long run.
Of course, sometimes life limit my time allowance to games...or lately, "poor games" send me to online forums!

I hope some day we can all put aside our racisms and prejudices and just laugh at people
I am a hybrid type player, I consider myself casual/competitive.
Casual because I do not have enough time to play constantly and competitive because I am attracted to PvP such as Guild Wars and I am always pushing myself to get better. I do not necessarily need to compete against other people to be really competitive. It is a sickness really.
As Sassy mentioned, if I was independently wealthy and did not feel the need to spend time with my wife, I would be crazy hardcore.

Casual- I don't have much time to play and I don't focus on just one type of game... I play most of them..
Old-school- My computer is a piece of crap, so I MUST be an old-school gamer... well, not really that old-school, but Morrowind could be considered as the most system demanding game I can play (5-10fps )

Played- Runescape, Conquer
Tested- EQ, RYL, Freeworld

That's the sterotype of a causal gamer. You would think that one dosen't play the newest games, but as a hobby in your terms, they would. When one has a hobby, you are usually up to date with it. Casual gamers are mostly always active in the gaming scene. They are gamers, if it's somthing they enjoy of course they would. You can't necessarly say they always go by reviews, becuase usually they don't care what others think. They play what they are intresed in. To say that their skill level is lower than a hardcore gamer or so called cyberathletes is not true. A casual gamer or any gamer for that matter has the ability to take down anyone at any skill level.
To tell you the truth, I don't think you can catagorize the skill of a gamer, but most likely at the different levels they play. For example say you can play normally, but play around yet you can start being serious with it. I think the list of what you got is inaccurate in most cases. I would have ot say if you can shorten it all down to one sentence, it would be most prefferable. You can't catagorize a gamer so easily other than Old School and Hardcore.
I think that the Xbox Gamer Zone has a better view of it:
I like that you have a hybrid catagory, but one can be in more than 2 of those catagories. They can be in all of them. That is why I said you can't necessarly catagorize a gamer. We all have different taste and different methods. I would say I'm a hybrid, but you say only two so I would have to say none of the above. I can be all of them, yet when I play old school, I'm old school, if I'm playing to win, I can become hardcore, when I want to relax I can be casual, if I'm competing I can be competitive, if I can be any off the above twice, I guess I would be hybrid, but I can be all of the above or more than there which would make me none of the above, but I'm a gamer.
I think you should have just asked us instead of catagorizing us.

RISING DRAGOON ~AION US ONLINE LEGION for Elyos
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
not sure I try out a bunch of FREE games every chance I get and stick with the funnest for a while
P.S. Lats time I checked Myth Wars has a virus
My mind has changed so much. Yet I'm still acting like I'm the same.
But I got lots of other strings such as working out, working for $$ and swimming. So I switch back and forth. When I have nothing but a good game to play, I'll play the entire day withough a second thought.
Im definately hardcore and always have been. I got into gaming on computers with a VIC20 and havnt looked back. Poured WAAAY too many hours in and at 40y/o I keep expecting the novelty to wear off.... but it doesnt.
In fact in the last couple of years as grafix have got better and better, Im finding that my expectations of PC games are really only just reaching the point now Id hoped they would be at several years ago. So its kind of like gaming is getting more interesting and enjoyable for me as time passes rather than less.
Whilst Im not the stereotype geek, I would rather be in front of my PC than almost anything else. I have other hobbies and Im married and working full time, but pretty much everything takes second priority to my gaming.

Yea I'd say im a competitive gamer, and ill admit im not a hardcore gamer i have other things to do with my life. But after counter strike was first realesed tell now I have all there games to Source and ive been in Cal-I and Czl-I for awhile now. And trust me its no peice of cake. It takes a lot of time to get good at that game. Plus theres all thsoe weird types of servers like Surf servers and WC3 style and all these weird ones that are kinda fun but take no skill.
And I play all types of games from Guild Wars, To BF2, to Red Alert, MidEvil II Total War, To Line Rider . But I always fall back to counter strike when bored for some reason.
