It's apparent that no one can say anything negative about GW without Niteblade crying like a girl. Srsly...someone needs a hug. Deal with the fact that not everyone likes the game, I certainly do but, do not find the point and click pvp challenging in any fashion. As for the "strategy" of picking 8 skills to use...it's a damn joke. Everything is cookie cutter and unispired leaving the only real skill needed to be mashing the keyboard after double clicking your opponent.
nightblade, you seem really disturbed that some people hate guild wars.
i thought gw would kick wow's ass, but my character felt stuck to the ground... there isnt any jump physics in the game.
also, you cannot move and attack at the same time.... the only real way to be effective is to use the click to move and the click to attack mouse commands-else other people will pwn you.
there really isnt much immersion in the combat... in wow you get to jump around, circle, and bash people in back... you feel very much that your character is an extension of you, because you can make all the general moves you can in real life.
the fact that gw combat is merely click the target, then press hotkeys while the character does the rest makes in... very... uninteresting...
also, having the game world instanced really detracts from the entire experience.... plus the fact that you cant jump and climb objects or leave the path the game designers set up at all... makes the game pretty claustrophobic.
the game does have some beautiful graphics, the ... i cant even remember it, but the sand levels i thought were really awesome. it's just too bad the gameplay took such a backseat to the graphics.
--people who believe in abstinence are unsurprisingly also some of the ugliest most sexually undesired people in the world.--
I played GW slowly for a few months, an hour or two a night. I had more fun getting my chars to lev 20 then in other games.
Some points that affected my enjoyment of the game :
- I have little time to play, only 1-2 hours late at night to play.
- I prefer solo to multi games (Morrowind/Oblivion, Gothic 2+3, Spellforce 2).
- was my first real journey in MMORPG's (trialed WoW before and enjoyed it)
- I will never pay for monthly subscriptions to games, initial cost is bad enough.
- my first char was a dumb build, R/E, pretty weak in both classes.
- second char, M/W is my favourite and the one I still play, good skills, everyone loves a Monk in their party.
- no local Australian servers, had to go US so the time difference mean't less peeps to group with.
- good/bad group affects your outlook on/experience in the game.
- only tried PvP a few times and did'nt really enjoy it. I was the only Monk in the group on two occasions and everyone considered it my fault when we lost because I could not heal them fast enough....bunch of pansies.
- I could finish a quest or two each night which showed me that I could still get somewhere without constant grinding.
- I got the original game just after the Factions came out, so it was an excellent bargin.
- I have no interest in joining a Guild because I don't really play to go PvP.
I left the game for a few months when I got a new PC and didn't install it until just recently during the Winter event to get a few free goodies. I'll be getting Nightfall shortly and will get back into it again as time permits.

Originally posted by Slangroth Hi, I have 3 level 20's and a I quit guild wars.after a month.I bought factions back in may, and quit at level 4, as you said, but anyway I came back, got addicted, bought nightfall, and got bored of the game. The reason is simple, I want game where I can pvp alot, and earn something, if its not the respect of others, maybe sometimes that actually changes the game for me.
No, you can't earn something that makes you superior to others in-game, because the whole point of Guild Wars is not giving someone with too much time in his hands an unfair advantage over others.
Pvp is so repetitive in guild wars its not funny, infact in alliance battle i dont even use my mouse, if I remember clearly, I press tab, 2,3,4,5 and basically do alot of damage or kill someone, however pressing those buttons gets very boring. And whats to earn from pvp? Maybe you can control the armory or so, get some armor, but its not gonna make a difference cause I already have max armor.
Alliance Battles... you've said it all. That's probably the most random and least serious form of PvP in Guild Wars, where no matter what build you bring you have a chance to be successful, because there's always be someone worse than you that you can kill. Also, the point of AB's is not killing but most people don't really realize it. If you actually bothered to press B and observed a top guild play, or at least gave Team Arena a shot, you'd have seen what real PvP is like.
I mean fissure of woe armor is another huge joke, waiting for the things to drop for them, taking months or so, and it doesnt even give you a benifit. At level 4 on my nightfall character someone offered to take characters to a place to buy max armor, he did it, and at level 4 i had max armor in nightfall, at level 7 or so I believe I had the best sheild / spear in the game.
Read above: just because you're a nerdy farmer it doesn't mean you should deserve to have an armor with, say, 100 base AL as an advantage over others. You'll have a super cool armor that others will envy for the look, but nothing else. Time spent shouldn't net you an edge over others. About getting max armor at low levels, that's you spoiling your own game experience. ANet has never introduced "hard" item level restrictions, it's your own choice whether you want to powerlevel or enjoy the game.
Out of the tons of skills there are, only a select few are used anyway, so many people have the same builds.
More in PvE than in PvP, many have the same build because they don't want to put effort into creating their own, and instead rely on cookie cutters that generally work. At the same time, you see dozens of different builds created by people and they keep changing as the game evolves and balance updates are done. I'd like to remind you that WoW has two viable builds (generally a PvE one and a PvP one) for each class.
Finally there is no freedom in that game, In example one cant go out chilling on a mountain top without bringing a group behind them, I mean you say its not PVE?
Why would you go "chilling" on a mountain top in an Action game?
Guild Vs Guild was ok, still nothing to gain though
Except real cash, yeah.
P.S. 1 elite skill at a time? lool royally screwed me over.
Elite skills are called "elite" for a reason: because they would be too powerful if you could put more than one on a bar. If you couldn't even grasp that simple concept then yeah, it's good that you quit Guild Wars (go quit if you haven't yet).
Originally posted by Raize I had two level 20 characters in the first one and a level 10 in Factions when I quit, I quit due to the forced grouping. There was a severe limit as to what could be done soloing, sure it could be done, if you had the right set-up, but there were far to few options for the game to be enjoyable outside of mass pvp.
"Forced grouping"? You're playing a MMORPG buddy, do you expect to play alone at all times? The game was never meant to be a solo game but a team game, although henchies/heroes can fill up spots pretty well.
Originally posted by Kyleran Best pvp to date... DAOC.... Guild wars was .... meh.... only so much you can do with 8 skills on your bar....
DAoC was probably the best zerging up to date, I'd say. The 8 skills limit is exactly what defines player skill: not being able to use the perfect counter to every situation you face, but instead designing an optimal build and working with the tools you've got.
Originally posted by LordSlater I found the lack of community and the huge ammount of instances a bit distastfull.
I assume you mean "distasteful", and that's definitely not the correct word. The game is completely instanced and you knew it when you bought it, so I'd say it's your own fault for not understanding what exactly it was that you wanted. Community, well... I think the slowness of the Guild Wars Guru fansite speaks for itself. And if you meant about quality rather than number, it's been proven several times that GW's community is no worse than the average MMORPG community.

By your definition, Starcraft is not PvP either. Then how come they have tournaments on TV in South Korea? If you're playing Guild Wars by double clicking on your opponents, then it already proves that you suck at movement - and henceforth, at PvP; the average newbie realizes that it's not the best course of action in a few hours, tops. If you actually had to aim to attack your opponent then GW would be so absurdly complicated that it wouldn't even be fun to play, for - as I said many times on other threads - there are so many things to do and think about while fighting that you've got your hands full. And please don't mention jumping, everyone can see how silly WoW fights are when people keep jumping around each other. Oh, also "target lock" is way less influenced by lag.
And please don't mention jumping, everyone can see how silly WoW fights are when people keep jumping around each other.
Especially when a fireball is heading towards someone, and they make a futile attempt to jump around and somehow "dodge" it. Of course, we all know the fireball follows the target.
In GW, you can dodge arrows and fireballs with skillful strafing. Of course, this is much harder if you're still clicking to move.
Originally posted by cointerm In GW, you can dodge arrows and fireballs with skillful strafing. Of course, this is much harder if you're still clicking to move.
True, but your second statement is incorrect from a game mechanics point of view
Not everyone knows that click-to-move is actually faster than keyboard movement. If you click on a spot on your side, your character will instantly face the new direction and run at normal speed; conversely, if you hold Q or E to strafe there, you'll be moving at a slightly reduced speed while still facing front. It's more or less the same difference between walking backwards and doing a 180° turn to run, although less dramatic: you can still dodge most projectiles coming from aggro distance easily by strafing.
(Just wanted to provide some useful information :P)

Ok, you don't find having dunno (I'm just guessing here) 10 Elite Skills, 60 Skills that relate to your build and only allowed to choose 8 challenging? Ok, that's understandable... I never said you can not say anything negative about GW or any game for that matter but atleast make sense or have logic behind it. It's not like you can just throw any 8 skills in your slots and go out and kill everything in sight. As for the point and click I dunno, I don't point and click my targets I find that slow. Maybe you should check the game guide on how to target that they have set up. Exactly, what are you comparing your "mashing keyboard" logic to? I don't mash my keyboard while playing any game.

Really? dam that's not what I was going for...
Look, I don't care if a person has a negative opinion about any game. But, if you are going to state your opinion atleast have something better besides "mashing the keyboard" as if we are apes. I maybe went a little overboard with the "dumbshit" comment and I appolgize for that. I find alot of games good games in their own right and I have negative opinions about GW also. And when I say negative things about the games I don't just say "Oh, I just sit there and click and I don't like that and therefore the game sucks cause I'm no ape and I don't like mashing the keyboard like a brainless zombie." I would give an logical reason and maybe give advice on how to improve the game instead of bashing it in the forum with no advice on how to improve it.
I find the graphics beautiful as I do WoW, SRO, 9Dragons and others, But I don't play a game for graphics. My friend that is strictly a WoW player and is all about the graphics said GW graphics were beautiful also and I was shocked, he's even got an character on one of my accounts. It is just a matter of opinion.
Even the old folks at rest home i used to work at couldn't stand to play this game they played it for a day and went back to shuffleboard lol. It's funny to see people praise such a terrible game when even an old fart can't stand it lol.

Exactly! We wonder why people praise WoW, we just can't understand why people would play such a crappy unfun game.
Am I the only one who hates Online games that allow you to bunnyhop ?
I can partly understand all the bickering I hear about a game "not being truly 3D" because of it but MMoRPGs and shooters aren't supposed to be Jump'n Runs. Jumping in itself would be a nice feature but in all MMoRPGs and shooters the ability to jump has always looked stupid, especially while fighting. Therefore I am glad that GW has no real jumping because it would downgrade the fun of pvp by a hundredfold.
Go play Tomb Raider please because jumping makes actually sense there. In MMoRPGs however it doesn't.
