My Thoughts On Vanguard ( NO FLAME/TROLL)

DruNk_DwArF2DruNk_DwArF2 Member UncommonPosts: 196

Hey guys ive been looking at Vanguard for some time now and gunna try it out..I see they have a long variety of races i belive 18 in total...And around 15classes (dont smash me for being wrong) Ive been hearing good and bad about this game,I see people complaining about it not being finished on time before release! But what MMORPG is released fully done!! Alot of people also dont like Sony and smash the crap out of them..Ok there not a great company but they have never botherd me in anyway and yes i have played EQ1/EQ2....I also hear that this is "EQ 2.5" Or "EQ3" I seriously like the idea of this being "EQ 2.5" Or "EQ3" Simply cause i love the EQ title....So overall i will be playing Vanguard and i hope to see the people that love the game play and make it a great play experience, and the people who wanna smash and troll the game stay away to your own game! this game will not be for everyone as of every MMORPG isnt right for some people!..(I was trying to get my hands on some game footage i couldnt find any besides the offical,So if you have any decent footage that works! Please post!!!)

If it looks interesting to you-why wouldn't you try it?

I never said you said anything.

You said you wanted to try the game because it looked interesting to you. I only posted saying that you should. So many people here let others opinions influence what games they play.

What were you just expecting someone to flame you or something? To each his own I always say.

I still am not sure what your trying to say to me,I was looking for good conversation about Vanguard, and possibly some other peoples opinions about what they think the game etc..

I find the game to be increasingly fun, these day to day patches make me a happy camper, the game is improving so much through the beta process.

I agree with that - the game looks better every single day (graphic is still the same) - and im having a blast playing this one  even though i have an avg of 10-15 fps (5 if its a cave) - but im getting my new X1950 Pro today - so it should be fine now.

Downloading the beta at the moment. Cant wait to give it a spin . Im trying to be optimistic about it despite the whiners.

Yes, best to form your own opinions. It seems to be a "love it or hate it" type of game. Lots of fixes/patching going on at the moment in preparation for launch.

I don't bother to post here usually because it seems no one can say a thing without being jumped by the fanboys or the trolls and it's really not worth it, but since you put the NO FLAME/TROLL line in the subject I decided to give YOU my opinion. Anyone can read this but it's ment for the OP only.

That said, I've only been playing since the beginning of BETA 5. The live servers are suppose to be open in 9 days for those like me who preordered, at the same time I assume the game will be gold and the last bit of production being finished up and boxes shipped out to stores and homes. It won't be ready. I'll get flamed for that remark, and people will throw up the line "No MMO ever ships in a finished state" of some very tired version of that. Fine. Doesn't change the fact that THIS one won't be. The Devs and programers ARE working very hard, but the last few patches I've seen seem to fix things that were having no effect on me while breaking other things that worked fine the day before.

The perfomance on my system, which runs every current high end game out right now at with 75-85% of the max settings without slowing down chugs along poorly in this game. In game people with much lower end systems report better results while many high end system folks report problems similar to mine. There are some tweaks people have posted and they help greatly, but currently I have to run the game with settings that make it look like EQ1 and early DAoC. Again folks will flame that it's not optimized yet. Game hits store shelves in 11 days, might wanna get on that.

Eighteen races... that sounds about right (I haven't bothered to count so just going by memory) BUT 4 of them are human, 2 are barbarians (so... bigger humans), half-elf (so... half-human) etc., etc. Nothing innovative. All standard fair. Three furry races, but no tails (even EQ1 had tails as early as the Iksar). No four-legged races, no reptiles. The goblins are kinda fun though and a nice change of pace.

Fifteen classes, but they took the annoying approach of putting each class into a group which just reminds me too much of EQ2, although once you start playing them it's not so bad. And thank god they didn't go down the "All races can play all classes" road that EQ2 took (yes, sometimes you had to betray to do it, yes the new fae can't betray yet). But in some cases they choices a race gets don't make much sense to me, though it's possible if you play every race and get into their history the reason they have access to a class will be obvious. Again the classes are pretty standard with a few exceptions like the bloodmage, the not ready or playable yet inquisitor, and the different than you're probably used to seeing druid. So far I've tried a shaman, bard, necromancer, and cleric. The cleric is only level 8 but so far is quite the tank and has been more fun than I'd have thought. The necromancer has some interesting traits, but I hit a level to get them the same day the Patch O'The Day broke my pet so I decided to camp him until the issues are fixed.

If you read this much you may get the impression I don't like the game, but that would be wrong. There are aspects of it I don't think are ready for Prime Time and it's getting pretty late in the day to wave the "It's a BETA" banner (might want to get working on the "It's Release Version 1.0" banners). I'm annoyed by the areas you can't get to because of terrain crafted to keep you on the road and in the areas they want you to go to, makes that whole promise of size seem a lil empty when I'm still routed around most of the time. I'm annoyed that the horse vendor lists a horse as costing like 50 copper and I have 75 silver and still get the message "You cannot afford that" and so am still a pedestrian. I'm annoyed that I had to make a "/shout The Quest or NPC you are asking about is currently broken. Please use /bug and then move along" macro because all you hear all night long is "Is the quest Running with Scissors broken?" or "Is the guy for Wasting your Time bugged?". I'm annoyed that the map, or the game options window, or the abilities window, or the pop-up asking you to rate quests often screws me and forces me to go into windows mode and back into the game to fix the problem. I'm annoyed that my goblin wins EVERY diplomacy game playing the same cards at the same time everytime BUT I like the diplomacy sytem and think it's pretty cool.

I like the diplomacy (needs tweaks, and SOME kind of penalty if you don't win), crafting and harvesting look very nice (I've barely done any), I like the quests and the history/lore that goes with many of them. I like the feel of the game and indeed I have bought the big collectors edition and from the time I got into beta have not even thought about cancelling my order. I know the game is getting better daily (in spite of what they break for me). I like how much of the game is set up. I would NOT recommend a friend buy the game on release unless they are prepared to deal with all that I've written above- but I am ready to deal with it.

I worry that shipping the game as is will create some very negative feedback for it and THAT will be hard to recover from. With the state it's in I think it'd be wiser to release it like EVE where you pay to play, but you download the client for free. People get a lot less upset about shelling out $15 for something they end up hating than they do $50. But that won't happen so *shrug*.

This is MY opinion about the game, intended ONLY for the OP. I've listed its faults but I still like the game... so flame me if you want, I don't think I gave any of you ammunition but I'm sure you'll suprise me. If you ARE gonna flame me, get that "It's a BETA!" thing as many times as you can, cause you won't get to use it much longer. If you're gonna tell me how stupid I am to defend such a piece of crap I can only say "You're here why?"

Hope some of this helps DruNk

Next time try using the Traditional BBML editor mode for long post such as yours.  I find it works somewhat better than the Enhanced editor.

Hundejahre, i did not beta this game or know much about it.  You seem well informed and experienced. imo you didnt say anything that a flamer could attack you with but you never know.  The last mmo i beta tested and played for awhile was RF online(35 siege gunner).  Ive never gave Wow a try, but your thoughts on this game give me pause.  Maybe just maybe this game will be worth  looking into mmo's again.  You seem like a gaming community member that makes playing mmo's worth it.   If i play this game i hope to quest/ group/party with you...

Thanks for your opinion on the game Hunde, I thought it was one of the best and most reasonable I have read so far. Much better than the usual crap of "This game is the best ever" and "This game is complete crap" that don't really have any actual specific input.

    Um... wasn't expecting THAT.

    Thank You

I played WoW for a while, and on-again off-again too. It is a pretty interesting game, you just need to ignore the folks who say it's crap and ignore the folks who hype it like it's the second coming. If you go into it knowing you will never be uber and will solo a lot it's a very easy game to have fun with for a few months... and these days it seems like that's about all you can ask for in a game. I really think the days of playing the same toon (or toons) for 5 years like we did with EQ or UO are long gone.

    My opinion FWIW

it is EQ 2.0.  Unfortunately for it, EQ2 is now EQ 2.28 - yes I play EQ2. it's my current MMO, but Ihave played a LOT (there was a time I could claim I had played em all heh).

Anyway.  it's NOT a bad game in any way so far as I have gotten into it.  There is just not enough that is original, unique, or compelling about either its system or its content.  It isnt a bad system, it isnt bad content.  In fact I would rank it as...somewhere in the top 6 to 8 slickest MMOs I have ever played.   In fact it really is truly cookie cutter.

most MMOs strive for some earth-shattering gimmick to stand out compared to the others - usually in tying underlying mechanics to the flavour of the environment - but...Vanguard tries to do with a "combination" of things, most of which have finally failed to be compelling to me

The IP of Vanguard is new.  I dont need another IP at this point.  i need an updated one I am familiar with.

The mechanics are ...evolutionary in minor ways

the interface is a step backwards.  They tried to marry the cartoon style of WoW with the customizable elegance of EQ2 and failed on both sides.

the races are bleh (no trolls! ahhhh!! no trolls!)

the classes are standard to me so far.

Diplomacy sounds like a cool concept - not enough by itself to differentiate this product for me tho

if I was grading I'd say C+ to B- area or 6.5-7 out of 10

I have played most of the main stream mmo and some of the not so mainstream ones as well.  i agree with the op and others in saying that while this game may not be fully ready yet it is still a good game.  Iplayed WOW up to lvl 54 and gat tired of the higher end gear grind that it had.  The first mmo i played was Asheron's Call 2, and for those who have not  played it, i am sry for ti was a remarkable game tht was killed to quickly. sry for the ramble but i base most mmos i play off AC2.  imho it had all the elements that madea mmo great a good story, good lvl exp, great groups and solo,  awesome graphics.  As of now vanguard is shaping up to be pretty awesome.  I will disagree with the poster who say the classes are not that great. yes they may be grp in to archetypes, but each is pretty unique. since i have spend a lot of beta trying different one i hve not grped that much but i think in grps each class has something to bring to the grp that will make strategy inportant.  all i have to say in closing is give it a try  and try judging on its own merits and not based on other mmo( even though in this post i did so a little bit but when first playing i viewed it as its own)

A lot of people don't think Vanguard is polished enough, but from the start of Beta 5 to now it has changed a lot becoming more and more polished.  There aren't any games released today w/o bugs, due to the funding that is required for these games.    I remember played WoW when it first came out it was buggy, can we claim it was a bad game.  It's all about the team working on the game, seasoned dev's that listen to the community appeals to me.  My personal grade of Vanguard in it's current state is about an 8.0/10.0.  But from the changes that are ongoing and making the game much more fun and playable, I say in a month it'll be around a 9.0/10.0, which at this point is better than WoW.  IMO.

Just wanted to say to people not in beta and are going to pick up the game, please be prepared, ALOT of hype on this game.

I'm lvl 8, Im sent to a NPC as part of sending me to a new area I get to where the npc should be hes not there, I /shout and ask about it, log off and come back in the npc is back, later I cant attack a merchant im send to kill, quest borken. please be prepared the game is going out and stuff is missing its a bit unfinished, if they had more money they would still be in beta, I read brad's post, the cash has gone and the time has come VG is hitting the selves at the end of the month.

but... I had this quest, npc told me to be carefull mabye get some friends.. its a hard quest bloody mobs keep grouping up and kicking my ass, Im doing naked corpse runs back and fighting my way back in, anyway after a while i do finish the quest got a nice staff and just felt great like id done something good.

I LOVE being in a new game, I played wow on its first day and SWG with both those game I didnt notice bugs or unfinished stuff but with VG I see alot of stuff not ready, Im willing to buy the game and I'll be prepared to scrap a quest or two coz its broke, The people in game are good, its a nice comunity so far as iv seen, i get buffed so much I'm making a point to give out my own buff more than ever.

GL to all hope to see you in game.

Everyone loves this game, especially people who complaint o the point where they say the game is unplayable then stay in the forums.  They are closet Vanguardians.  This is like another man said, an either you love it or you hate it kinda game.  I think the old schoolers like D&D old school are into this kinda game - usually the types that prefer a good story, great character choices, and look at more of the heart of the game, rather than the bowels. . .everyone else, really can't cut it.

I do not understand the main argument against vanguard, but it appears to be a mix of the game not being "polished" when ti is compared to games that have already been out for a few years and i don't know what the other issue is.  The thing that screwed Sigil over the worst was the time they spent working on a game engine and combat system for a couple of years that they ended up scrapping and changing into something else, thereby making them look like they have had their fingers up their asses instead of on mice and keyboards.

This is an absolutely marvelous post! You actually manage to pull of a moderated opinion, telling what you feel for the game and why. You have impressed me and managed to earn my respect. By all means, keep commenting! Serious comments are way to scarce!

    Thanks...
