Are there MMORPG's out there that offer the choice of player vs. player? And I don't mean that just certain areas are no pvp....I mean are there games where you can choose pvp or not and NOT be penalized (some weapons not available or level restrictions) if you do not pvp?
I enjoy games where I get to go out hunting monsters with other players but truly dislike fighting other players. I find that it almost always means that several times a day some tweaked out high level will come by and nuke me just for kicks. I hate that and it usually stops me from continuuing that game.
Also, I have seen some games where all the good equipment is in a pvp area, so for those of us who don't want to get squashed by some high level warrior we are just SOL for decent equipment or the really exciting zones.
What I am really looking for is a game that either has no pvp or some sort of flag that will only allow those who choose to participate in pvp be allowed to do it.
Any ideas, suggestions, rants........???

Some people do not want PvP, that is a fact, and an opinion I am fine with.
There are games that have no PvP. Most of the EQ servers are non-PvP. At least they were, I have not played in years...
I am sure there are more that have no PvP.

Ya games like AC you can be totally non-pvp, all but one server are carebear servers. I think CoH everyone is a good guy and not a villain. And a lot more.
Even if you take a game like Lineage 2, you can attack anyone you want. But the penalty for PKing an unwilling participant is so extreme, no one does it. The only time you will get PK'd is if you fight willingly, or if you go red - then everyone will kill you on sight until you are lvl 4 and lose all your gear.
if only you were as powerful as me
For KS I see the best answer I could not have seen from a little 2d MMORPG.
Once a mob is engaged, only the group of that player can attack it.
No PvP, no KS, nothing but pure raw respect.
Of course some folks will try to click it before you, now it come to who have the right to be in a place and call it a camp or not, which have nothing to do with KSing or PvP!
I rather just have an issue with who own the camp then have issue with KS or PvP, since here it is an issue of who have the camp more then anything, KS is impossible, as someone that engage a mob before you cannot KS what you didnt have engage yet. Now, they steal a camp mob or something and it need an answer, but it is a lot easier to handle then handling KS or PvP. I would simply give a timer before anyone can engage a mob that just spawn, and that time is reduce with the time you have been in a camp, simple enought, fair enought. Only remain the worst case, as only the worst case will come after you and dont leave, the GM are there for that and you just call him and he kick someone that arrive after you out, or maybe you can even just kick them out as well with a button option for it. No KS, no PvP, no stealing, nothing, very easy to handle, very simple, very efficient! You come after that player, well, deal with that players rules or leave! Now it bring a new very minor issue, how about someone that is to weak to handle a camp and just claim it, but this is so much easier to handle once you have those tools, so easy and simple... and fair! Effectively, someone that is to weak to handle a camp will leave eventually unless he have the support of some players that aggree to play by his/her rules and that can handle the camp, this is not yet a solution for the problem, but it is a start of a solution. PvP favorise the stronger player, which is unfair for all the weakers toons, they have the same right to enjoy the game and evolve no matter how weak their toons are.
Back to the main topic of this subject: EQ, AC, AC2, FF XI, Horizons, SWG, Sims, all handle a very nice non-PvP system. EQ2 and UXO will be non-PvP for folks that dont want to PvP as well. (most of them have PvP servers, just make sure you know which server is what before joining a place and then finding surprises)

Far more games have PvP than people give credit for. Nearly all of them have PvP? How, ever been KSed? Anyone ever sit in your camp and tell you what they think of your mother? Even been trained? Has someone used some bizarre game bug to cause you grief?
PvP happens even if you don't want it to. The question isn't does the game have PvP, if it's a MMORPG you'll be competing with other players either directly or indirectly.
The question is really "Does the MMORPG you want to play allow you to retaliate against those that would slow your progress?"
