Good call. Almost forgot about it! I saw it in a magazine and the crude graphics of Civilization 2 intrigued me. I bought it, it seemed fantastic.
It did not disappoint.
It seems earlier Game deisgners were way more original in the developing of their games than now. Mostly nowadays, new games are just a complete copy of the last game in their series, with better graphics (take Heroes of Might & Magic V as an example).
edit: i'd like to take most back of what i just said. More properly phrased, what i wanted to say is that games nowadays are less innovative than before, but are still fun to play
Something is wrong with that game. I love HoMM1-3, skipped 4, but 5? Wtf? It takes the computer over an hour to finish it's turn!
I dont have that problem. try re-intsalling. I like the earlier HoMM versions better though
Civilization 1 was great game, no question. I skipped number 2, only to find that Civ 3 was pretty much the same game, i mean wtf was that about? It still had the same moronic things that drove me crazy in the first one, like sailing boat pwning a battleship or musketeer killing a tank!
Well, as time has marched on, various games have blown me away: Super Metroid, Final Fantasy 7, Morrowind,.. The list goes on and on. Point is, these are just my favorite games. Other people like diferent games. And many games they like I've never played.
In other words, the "best" game ever is hard to pin down.

that was horrible It's supposed to be fixed in IV, but i don't believe them.
another great classic i'd like to mention was Doom. Although i guess thats a love or hate game.
I'm the only "real" gamer that I know who has never played fallout.
I think that if I had to pick the game that I enjoyed more than any other game...I would have to say probably Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas. When I played it there was just such a feeling of completeness to the game, I couldn't think of anything that I wished was different...that's very rare. I would put Starcraft, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Metal Gear Solid in the same category though, all truly amazing games.
Me, I dug Vice City a whole lot more than SA. In SA especially the countryside missions were just a real drag and seemed like such a filler. Also I think the "countryside" in GTA has always been lacking. Vice City probably had the best soundtrack ever in a computer game, period.
As for the best/most time consuming game I've ever played: DotA for Warcraft III and The Frozen Throne. Here's a link to a goddamn sucky song about DotA by a guy who topped the lists in Finland and Sweden with a song about internet relay chat and the album that had the song(and this DotA one):
The guy actually does get chicks by playing DotA and IRC:ing. And yes the song is a very close clone to Daddy DJ.
Morrowind, Diablo II and WoW come in as the next "most time consuming". C&C was excellent for it's time. Fallout II as well. But when I try them now they just seem mediocre even with the positive nostalgia factor.
For me, it is a tie between Freespace 1 & 2, and Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Freespace 1 was my first game, and FS2 was my first online game. Every other space sim looks like crap next to Freespace. Even now, 3 years after they took down the online servers, I am still involved in the mod community and the Source Code Project.
Morrowind I have spent over 5000+ hours in that game. I have never played the expansions, or mods. Just plain, vanilla Morrowind. It doesn't need any mods, it's perfect.
Icewind Dale. Period. Strange choice to many, but I have yet to find a game that has given me more pleasure. And I have played a great amount of games.
Daggerfall, for making me loose sleep and play for more than a year even with game breaking bugs... it was epic! And at the time, such freedom in a game was ground breaking...

Trust me mate, its fixed, no more fortified spearmen holding off tanks. And boy was I relieved when I started playing the game. The new system is actually quite innovative, especially the promotion of units, which plays a crucial role in strategy.
For me it was final fantasy 7, that game blew me away, and considering the fact that i could replay it over and over and still have fun with it is a small feat in itself, i cant believe nobody else said ff7.
my vote would be runescape, i mean where esl would u be able to play around like ur in the mid ages. if i had to rank runescape on a scale from 1 to 5 it would be a /( a 5 out of 5)

#1 Morrowind, #2 Black & White 2, #3 Final Fantasy 7, and uh..oh god. #4 is the first C&C(tied with Warcraft 2). I loved the music to that game lol.

Some other favorites in no particular order:
Age of Empires 2
Halo 1
Counter-Strike
Project Gotham Racing 2
Gears of War
Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield
"Kaneda! What...do you see?"
Hail DnDOnlinegames!
My mind has changed so much. Yet I'm still acting like I'm the same.

O_o o_O
Every one of you are forgetting to mention the BEST games of all. (the Fallout series was grand though)
Bomberman.
Mario Cart Racing.
Oddworld - Abes odessey
Aladin.
Ghouls and Ghosts.
Gauntlet Legends. (only game I'd go for at the arcade, that or the sniper ones)
And many more.. But maybe it's just me who loves those games. Grew up with 'em, and they are killer fun even today.
the greatest game ever is Dungeon Keeper;) it's the collest game i ever playd. anynoe should play it.
Beware the lord of the land approches;)
I got two Words for you
SUCK IT!

Personally, I think the best game of all time is Dungeon Keeper II! If I had to rank it out of 10 I would have to say it would be a
"/" !10 out of 10!
