If you look at my posting past, you will notice one thing right away ... I don't like WoW too much. With my typical line being "I will not give blizzard any of my money for that piece of shit game".
So i have a buddy that i have gamed with for the longest time, i met him in the original EQ and we have gone through MMO after MMO. He's stuck in WoW and loves it, he also knows that I dislike it and wants me to change my attitude. So he tells me "I wont have to give blizzard any money at all ... " and offers to lend me his account for 30 days to give WoW a chance to grow on me.
after nagging and nagging ... I finally say ok ... actually it was more like "fine just stfu about it". He told me to start a paladin since he knows i like a fighter with healing abilities ... So i do.
So I log in for the first time and I look at the races screen and just shake my head thinking ... hmm i wonder if i can get my character close to He-Man look wise. (I pick human)I try and find theres about 5 hairstyles that all look really crappy ... so my character has a shaved head. no sliders, no nothing So every human male in the Warcraft universe is the exact same height? wonderful.
So I log in a PVE server with a name that escapes me at the moment ... thor's asscrack or something to that extent. see the movie talking about humans and thier struggles ... blah blah order good ... blah blah horde bad ... yada yada generic plot., Ok into the game i go. get in game look around and see a couple of my server mates ....
"Blackdude"
"Magikguy"
"lotsapuss"
"BallofFlames"
/exit
I'm not a huge stickler on names but when thats the first 4 names you see ... eh its enough for me. I got an idea I will try an RP server.
log into one of the medium capacity RP servers with another unimportant name. Remake my paladin and skip the damn human movie again. by the way I love the pajamas paladins start with
walk over to the guy with a BIG Bright question mark over his head. he tells me he wants me to walk over to a guy with a BIG BRIGHT exclamation mark over his head. So i do, as i walk I wonder if my character can pull the carrot out of his ass so he runs a bit more like a man.
WOW xp for running 10 feet ... fun!
the guy with the exclamation over his head tells me i have to kill some mobs. I run out and see the mobs and as i attack they yell "no take my candle" ... great. So i start battling the forces of candlewearers!
Autoattack , next ... Auto Attack , next ... AutoAttack, next ... AutoAttack, next. how exciting!
well I ding i say to myself well maybe now i will get skills that will make combat pretty exciting ... 10 levels later ...
Autoattack, next ... autoattack, next .... autoattack, next ... autoattack, next ................ great at least i can buff. I buff you and you and you and you.
So i figure, maybe the game gets more fun in groups ... usually soloing does suck to me.
"wanna group up?" .... "nah"
"hey you wanna group?" ... "no way"
So at this time I ask my buddy where do i go to group with people? he says ... oh people don't start grouping till instances and higher levels, your better off solo you get more xp.
are you kidding me? i have to solo till 60? um isn't this a MMO or something? if I wanted this i would have played Oblivion.
Boring classes
Boring Customization
Boring combat
Stupid people with stupid names
Shitty Graphics
Boring Races
this game is exactly what i thought it was going to be like.

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Amen. Yet it seems to me, that this is why this game is so successful. Scaring...

Right so i "play" WoW,then Burning Crusades comes out...my friend yells at me 2 go get that wich seems preaty pointless because WoW has shitty quests, and mostly assholes that play.
The best thing about the game is the dungeons or pvp(as a rogue anyway iam not good with anyone els)
I dont recommend this game at all unless you want to spend 4 months to get to 40,get a mount do a semi-high lvl dungeon and figure...well this was all that this game has 2 offer? Then quit and regret spending $75+ on a game and not a something useful...
Well, your last point is quite interesting and I wonder about that often myself. Why don't people just play oblivion when most of MMO players don't like to group?
But I agree, hard to understand the success of WoW, some things are pretty good, e.g. clear quest descriptions or the graphics engine (just the technique, not the look) and I don't even want to start about the negative things, sure got mentioned zillion times on this board ....
So quest after quest after quest after quest ... on thing remains the same items that should drop for these quests never do. but again why would blizzard want the game to make sense right?
for example I get told to go get 8 "mudpaw" claws. I figure ... well 8 is not so bad ........... 40+ kills later I have 8 claws. I get another quest ... get 7 pig livers, figure well maybe i was just unlucky with the claws. 30+ kills later i have 7 pig livers.
Now i think to myself I must be pretty fricken uber to totally mangle not one but 2 mudpaw claws SO BAD that they would completely disappear, and to totally obliterate a pigs liver that it not longer exists is pretty amazing as well.
then it brought me back to an earlier quest "bring me the head of <insert defias leader name>" ... I thought, I am surprised it dropped on the first attempt.
I mean I would understand if the quest said "some mudpaws have special golden braclets to show thier rank, bring me 8 golden braclets". then i could understand not all of them having one ... but CLAWS?!?!?!? they have 4 technically (hands and feet) and they rarely drop 1?
I actually really liked WoW when I first played it. I'm not saying it's the benchmark for all mankind in the genre of MMO's but it's not bad. It's easy and fun. Challenging, not in the least. It's funny but the only true challenge is giving your time to run the same instances over and over again to get gear.
Like several of you, I've played many games (some longer than others) and the game I played before WoW was FFXI. I took one job to the 75 cap and another close to cap with 70. FFXI has a long ass grind but I made some friends there and wanted to stay and play. It took me waaaaayyy less time to cap in WoW plus it was all solo, not including the instance pugs here and there. I think I capped in about a month both times I took jobs to 60. The funny thing is it I wasn't even trying to hard. I just did quests where it told me, followed the path so to speak. All I can say is IMO a bigger leveling curve gives you more of a sense of accomplishment when you complete it. Once upon a time I used to hate how hard it was to get xp and how much I needed to max my toon out in FFXI but in retrospect it made more valuable of an experience. I know TBC has raised the cap to 70 but big deal, what's that another week or two of grinding from 60-70. You really feel you've done something at the end of a marathon, a short sprint is just BAM and it's over to leave you standing around shuffling your feet.
Lastly, what really killed WoW for me was the community. I tried several servers before I went with one and even ended up moving one character to a new server (back then you had to pay) I started on just PvP servers and ended up on a RPPvP server hoping the community would be a little more mature but it was actually worse, lol. Silly me thinking the "RP" meant "role play" which if you brought up the lack of roleplaying in chat you pretty much got laughed at. Or if you asked a person to stop spamming global chat to sell his crap instead of using the trade channel only to get a bunch of BS. Same goes with guild recruitment on global (last I checked there was a channel for that too) or the eternal chuck norris debate. I really came to play and experience a game with other people but it just wasn't happening. I had shut off chat channels, ignore/blocked people etc etc and pretty soon I was down to guild chat and LFG if dared to turn it on once in a while. I really tried to leave as much communication open as possible without getting harrassed. I mean, it's Massively Multiplayer right? I was there to play with other people but some people want to have their fun at the expense of the majority's fun. Eventually I ended up in bg's where I could be around different people and not have to talk too much but even that went sour. Every few bg's you'd get some ass yelling and screaming how dumb everyone one was blah blah blah, you all have no skillz blah blah blah. At any rate, I wish WoW all the best. Maybe if they do some server housework and enforce some of their policies I might come back, but I doubt it.
Oh well, that's my rant. I hope one or two of you can relate to it.
I have played most MMO's such as UO, MxO, SWG Pre-suck, EvE, DAoC, etc, so you cannot throw the n00b crap at me either.
You people will not like a game if it is not like
*Eve
*SWG Pre-CU
*UO
or
*DAoC
That is a fact that I have gleaned from these forums. And the pure hatred and venom! Good God.
Get over it already. You may not like the game, but 8,000,000 other people do. Yes, the majority is not always correct, but neither is the minority. If you do not like the game, why talk about it so damn much? All you do is drive more people like myself to try it and get hooked, totally defeating your purpose.
I honestly do not see a major difference in this game than any other MMORPG that would make it suck as bad as you want everyone to believe.
Edited for spelling
You are right xxpigxx ... I agree with your comments & like you, I've played several mmorpgs; DAoC the longest.. When I first started WoW, (& DAOC) it was to play along with my son (US Marine) & some great friends.. he got me started onlines games while watching him play UO..
I too, at first, did not think I would like it (WoW) ... I went into a *Normal* server pver... really had *fun*, same grind as ALL the rest, just a bit more *Flashier* so to speak..(Pretty cool imo) lol my son went to a PvP server.. ugh!! see, in DAoC, I started out as a warrior when the game 1st went live... GREAT CLASS until Mythic changed the game from melee to stealthers then to a Caster's world... (btw, the reason I said UGH for pvp... Andred killed any love for that type of server) Soooo now a pvper in WoW... I LOVE IT!!!! I love having fun & not worring about having to grind if I don't feel like it.. I enjoy the crafting... I enjoy the *fashion*... I love the fact, that when I am face down in the dirt, I can go back and not lose the xp I worked on... I love the fact that it can be fun being the class you want to be & not have to be concerned of unblanced with another.. (the Talent tree of your choice )
No matter which game you jump into... My God man.. Have fun!! they are really all the same... no matter what game. Maturity?? I have met some *kids* more mature in playing then adults
yes, I betaed LoTR, ArchLord, Vanguard, & a few others... I still enjoy WoW.. well like many, will of course get in to Warhammer.. or Star Trek... who knows.. whatever I get into.. I relax, get my mind away from the work thingy.. & Have Fun!!!

WoW could have been the very best game you ever played and you'd still be here, on this forum, writing a post about how horrible the game was just so you could say you were right the entire time.

What amazes me is how "people don't understand" wow's success. Is it that you actually know and don't want to say or is it that you really don't have the capacity to figure it out? There is a lot of hateful passon towards WOW, and by passion I mean you really put a lot of emotion into it. Too much emotion imo.
You don't come here to comment about the limit selection of colors in the shoelace industry. Why? Because you don't have any emotional investment in shoelaces. But you do have an emotional investment in hating wow. If you don't like something, why not just move on or get on with you life about it.
If you dont like the game FINE - that in itself hardly makes it a shitty game. I hate EVE but think it's a fantastic game and community. I think Guild Wars SUCKS but think it's awesome that a company has made a f2p peusdo-MMO. I LOVED SWG but realize it was a total failure, and while I'll never argue the fact that WoW is simplistic and unimmersive I think it's a wonderful success that was really opened up the genre of the MMO to the mass market where previously it was fairly niche.

Okay...
So i have a buddy that i have gamed with for the longest time, i met him in the original EQ and we have gone through MMO after MMO. " and offers to lend me his account for 30 days to give WoW a chance to grow on me.
Wait! At this point I get the impression that you've never played WoW before this incident. If that's true.... Then how did you know that you "hated it?"
Autoattack , next ... Auto Attack , next ... AutoAttack, next ... AutoAttack, next. how exciting!
You just described Combat in every MMO I've ever played since the hayday of text based MUDs.
So at this time I ask my buddy where do i go to group with people? he says ... oh people don't start grouping till instances and higher levels, your better off solo you get more xp.
Again, you just described the community of every MMO I've played since EQ1. I could argue that this has been the norm since the outbreak of Diku Gamma, but I don't think most readers here would know what I'm talking about.
this game is exactly what i thought it was going to be like.
Yep, you found exactly what you were looking for. Whether it was there or not.
odd, i will let the rest slide, but my be paladin (under level 10)do not use only autoattack... maybe you missed something, i dunno, like judgement? that you get at level 4 or 6 ? that permit to take your short duration buffs and make them do something else, like, dunno, instant damage? making mobs weaker to holy damage? things like that?
that said, paladins are not exactly known for being an overcomplicated class with tons of ability. or better they DO have tons of abilities, like all wow classes, but theirs are auras, healing and long and short duration buffs, so not much in the offensive areas (beside judgement that is and the different combos you can do with it)
"If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, if you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime"
My experience with WOW is much the same, lukily i had my grandmother, 9 yr old cusin and two of my friends in "the RL"
Anyway, my two friends who are just as much MMO vets as i am
(brief history- Eq1 pre luclin-gates of discorde -- Planetside--SWG--eq2--Swg--WoW--lil bit of eve and CoH-- curently Eq2)
Anyway, when i logged in the only reason people whould group is to kill one mob then theyd all break up for all those who say you could get a group at lvl one is stupid because you get to lvl 2 in aobut 3 seconds. Anyway the only thing i realy liked aobut wow was the seamless zoning as its the only game ive played with no loading times.
Other than that i didnt like it, one thing i will point out tho is how people say that WoW sucks because a bunch of 12 year olds play WoW, but when i played eq1 i was 10 shortly turning 11, to say that 12 year olds prove a game is simplistic is definately wrong becaus ei think we can all agree Eq1 was far from simplistic
thats it, in short dont play wow its isnt very good not to mention blizzard rakin in 15 bucks a month from 5 million subscribers can only produce one expansion and 12 updates, yet SOE with a total of 1-3 million players on all games, can make expansions and updates for there games constantly
but SOE is money hungry bastards THEY KILLED SWG FOR MONEY GAH!!!

WoW is no shining example of MMO greatness. But yet I have found NO MMO to be really that great. His experiences are what he will find you will find we all will find in every MMO thats out there PERIOD without exception end of debate and yes game set and match.
You will find the same experience in
Eve
DAOC
EQ
EQ2
DDO
COH/COV
Lineage 2
plus many many more
None offer the perfect experience and WoW is doing so well because it does many things ok but nothing spectucularly well. Thats the best you can get in the MMO world atm sorry but thats just facts.
In the end every MMO is at its core and I copy and paste
Boring classes
Boring Customization
Boring combat
Stupid people with stupid names
Shitty Graphics
Boring Races
yes every single MMO period. No deveoloper wants to risk venture capital on something new something inventive. So if you want to play an MMO you will have to fiind one that is LEAST of all the above for you but accept the fact that they will be exactly above. Yes even Eve :P since this was obviously a smash WoW and prop up Eve thread by the OP.
So in the end why do people bash WoW ?
Because they are insecure in their current game and are actually threatened that WoW may damage their current game of choice. They prop up low self esteem by bashing people that play it and say how they are simple minded and to stupid to enjoy anything else.
To the op considered yourself educated :P
