Go outside. You can tell it's there. Everyone's having record warm winters and the like. There's something going on more than just the government trying to scare us or something. Yay conspiracy theories.

We're certainly not having a record warm winter here. And even if it is getting warmer that doesn't mean the 'global warming' theory is right. One of the main arguments against the man made global warming, is the fact that the Earth has gone through many natural temperature cycles throughout it's existence.

I have to agree with the first poster.

Then can someone explain the big hole in the ozone layer? It IS getting bigger every year, ya know.

Seriously. I mean, we rely on oil companies like Amaco and BP a LOT. They pour billions of dollars into the government in taxes. Why on earth would our government try to pull a global warming scare, and try to work on alternative fuel when doing so would ruin their relationship with really really big international corperations? The United States tries to keep their deficit in check, not save the world from frying eggs on their sidewalks in the middle of winter.

BTW, I realize that our petrol usage isn't the only factor, but its a big one.

I have to agree with the first poster.Sorry, I shouldn't have said "everyone". It isn't everyone, just a large number of places, including where I live. Besides, the gov doesn't really get anything out of saying there's global warming, so I don't see why they would lie about it.

The thing that keeps me in "doubt" is the fact that in the last 4 billion years there have been countless cycles of extreme climate changes.

For any scientist to make the statement today that "the globe has heated faster in the past 100 years that at any time before" is just out and out guesswork.

They dont even have ice core records that go back any more than a few hundred thousand years, so the FACT is we just dont know whether the globe has ever warmed this fast.

In realitry the climate change we are seeing now could be on the low end of the severity scale and we just wouldnt know.

We assume way to much and give ourselves way too much credit for understanding the climate. Most meteoroligists cant predict the weather with any accuracy over periods of 24-48 hours.... but they expect us to believe they can say whats going to happen in 50 years.... I have to chuckle Im sorry.

Especially when I was watching the news yesterday and the weather guy says "there is an even chance of Australia returning to "normal" rainfall over the next 6 months". I was ROFLing my butt off...

On average there is an average chance that the average temperature will be average....

Nice work.... any 7 year old maths student could have predicted that.....

The average global temperature for the last 130 years would beg to differ about your little conspiracy theory my friend.

Cant argue with numbers. Almost the entire world is hotter than normal and there is a DEFINATE trend towards getting hotter.

Here is another one, using proxy data and observations from the northern hemisphere to go further back, as well as current trend predictions. note this one is  Variance of the temperature of the earth's surface, not actual temperature, if you notice in recent times it has increased.

    Full sized image (here)

You cant pass definative judgement either way, but there is some strong evidence.

Scientists don't argue whether Global Warming exists or not. This is no longer a debatable factor amongst the scientific community. The FAR FAR majority of scientists know that global warming exists. Anybody who chooses to listen to politicians as opposed to scientists is a puppet, also the "advisers" to the politicians don't hold much merit either. Go to any environmental scientist, physicist, chemist, anybody related to the the biological or physical sciences and they will tell you.

Global Warming is best served as a political agenda for most nowadays. But here is the thing, if we act upon Global Warming and it doesn't actually exist what do we get? Cleaner cars, less dependency on oil, and less pollution. Nothing that I would spit on. However, if we ignore it, the affects could destroy millions of species, humans, and possibly destroy entire land masses, all this so people could enjoy their SUVs a little bit more? Who are you kidding?

Thats pretty much my take on it...

The solutions are about 99% good things so the existence of the problem as a debate is basically irrelevant.

Gotta wonder about the drop in average temperatures between 1940 and 1980 though lol... thats basically exactly what Im talking about... We think we get it.... but I dont think we really do.

Nail on the head. Global warming? Walk outside and its "warm?" please...look at the climate history of the world. I've had tons of teachers over the years come out and prove to me that global warming is false, and it is something that goes in a cycle. There'll be a "global warming" and a "global freeze" etc. It's just the way it goes. This is NOTHING new.

it's real-it might not be bullshit, but it is shit. I don't see why there are a bunch of posts about it. We get the point-it will happen. I don't see why people are worried about it

also-the reason it hasn't developed over the whole time period this fast is because no species has released so much polution in the air. Before us the earth balanced itself out

Global warming is a reality.  The earth goes through cycles of warming and cooling, and we're on the rise right now.  This is not debatable (well, unless you're a young earth creationist).

What is debatable is human impact on global warming.  I personally believe that humans are impacting the speed at which the earth is warming, but it isn't very significant.  We still need to develop cleaner technologies and push for stricter laws regarding polution though.

lol, this is great stuff..just think about it for a moment guys

do you think pumping trillions of litres of toxic fumes into our atmosphere would be

    a) a good thing

    b) a bad thing

    it's happening,we're doing it,and it's a bad thing,k?

good, glad we cleared that up..oh and you don't need to take my word for it

As a Environmental Science student, I have had the opportunity to sit in on many guest lectures.  And yes, some of them have been related to Global Warming (Its rare to find one directly related to it).  Statistically the US (the lecture was on the US only) is warming.  The north west US is in the +1.5 degrees C range, and the south east is near the opposite.   There is a line in the St. Louis-Chicago-Detroit range where there is no significant climate change.

Now.. that said... It's not the typical warming everyone is thinking that it is, where the summers are HOT, and the winters are mild.  Statistics show that the summers actually do not show a statistically significant warming (in the past 80 years, which is the furthest back that we have reliably recorded history - its ~150 years in areas, but ~80 years throughout the country).  However, winters do actually show a significant warming.  To picture this think of a Sine wave, and basically stretch it - it's not the perfect way to visualize it, but without a picture it's really difficult.

So, Is Global Warming occurring?  Reluctantly it is.  But, I am by no means stating that it is caused by anthropogenic factors... yet.  And also it is important to note that there ARE colder areas, but as a whole the US is warming (but I forget the US average increase - pretty low though as it is across the world)

As for reading articles about this topic search academic sites (google scholar is a great start) but without University access many articles are restricted by memberships.  Although news sites are typically the easiest to find - they are NOT always accurate, and actually rarely are accurate.

As for the Ozone hole comment.... Please, you need to do some research on that before you make a post - it's barely a topic of interest anymore other than its use as an example of how we can restore the environment.

I've passed on posting on so many of these topics because in reality in a few posts someone will get mad at my post, and respond with an absolutely ignorant comment - only leading to an argument (not with me) and accomplishing absolutely nothing.  So read this and before you respond, use google scholar (or something else like it) to make an independent assessment.

And remember that I did not say humans are responsible.

well i am. over the past few years, winters have (here) become over 10 degrees (celsius) warmer. Obviously global warming is taking place right now. but to what effect it is made by man we do not know.
