Veteran Gamer Looking for a New Game...

Hello everyone. Long time visitor to the site, but I've only recently signed up. Been bored over the past couple of weeks, so I decided to throw up an account on MMORPG.com to kill some time. I've got a big question, though that's been plaguing me.

I've played games online since around 7th grade. It started with Command and Conquer Renegade online. Though it wasn't an MMO, it got me hooked into playing with others online. I've found games to play over the years, but now there's just nothing out there that I can bear to play right now. And I'm looking for some outside opinions or possible help to point me in a new direction.

I'm going to list the former games I've played and some comments. I'm really looking for a new game to play before college. I leave in July and I won't be able to play MMO's very often after then. I'm going to a military college (VMI for those interested) and it won't be plausible to play there.

Any suggestions? ...

C&C Renegade: Fun game, community died without EA support.

Planetside: Played for a couple of years. Game is slowly dying because players quitting. Played it last week on a free trial; locks up every hour or so because of newest patch.

World of Warcraft: The giant of MMO's right now. I grew tired of it, and sold my account on EBay. Not going back.  Ever.

Runescape: Played for a couple years. Got hacked after I downloaded a bugged "toolkit". Quit afterwards. I would go back if not for my retarded name I had there and for the super rare items I lost (Holiday stuff).

LOTROnline: Too much like WoW. Played beta. Not my cup of tea.

MapleStory: No. Just no.

Auto Assault: I liked the concept; just not enough people playing.

RFOnline: Too much of a Korean grind. Played beta and a month into release.

Silkroad: Stupid china grind & graphics.

EVE: Got really into it the first couple of days. Bought a new ship and was heading to my new Corp station. Autopilot took me through 0.0 space and I got podded. Quit.

Carpe Diem: Alright game. Graphics gave me a headache.

Puzzle Pirates: Sadly, the only game I'm playing online right now. I can't find a new game!

Can anyone maybe suggest a game I have not played or give me some insight into games that have changed since I've played them? I really need another MMO in my life right now. Thanks.

Oh dear... try to have a little more backbone than a 3 year old...

Did you speak to anyone after you were podded?  Did you actually speak to anyone before you got podded?  Did you understand why you got podded?

If you gave up that easily after saying you were 'really into it' then I'd advise not playing Eve again.  Oh yeah, and don't bother going to Military College because with that amount of determination I don't think you'll make it...

With the possibility of getting flamed I would suggest Vanguard. Why? First, I was a big naysayer, the game I've been waiting for is Age Of Conan. However, I was bored and got the vanguard beta, and was hooked. I'll tell you why this is a game to get into now. A. Getting in on the ground floor is a cool thing. The game tells you if you're the first person to discover and item or find a place. You will know as much as anyone about the game from the start. B. Although new and containing some non game breaking bugs, Vanguard is just an awesome game. The world is huge and veried, the mobs and quests are as well. many races and many classes. Also your crafting and harvesting is not directly linked to your level... your adventuring level that is.  C. If you have a moderatly fast rig the game playes well and looks awesome. People that are used to high frame rastes in game slike quake and CC may bitch but even with lower frame rates the game is extremely playable.  Just my opinion but why not jump into a great game that is just statrting.

Yeah, I'ld have to agree w/ the above. VG may be your best bet for now. I was also in Closed Beta and it is amazing as you explore the world. You mentioned one that Im in closed beta in now, and all I can say is much improved, wait for April. Hope Im right, good times to all...

I would say you should play Eve because it's immense and amazing... but you all ready tried and quit. If you are so easily discouraged by losing a few days of effort, Eve might not be for you.

But, if you think you can toughen up, it's a fantastic game. The learning curve is steep, butIf you stick with it for a month or so, you'll start to get a feeling for how much there is to the game and how many different things you can do in it.

If you're looking right now for a MMORPG-alike, yet very distant from all other MMORPGs, you could try Guild Wars. Conversely, if you're willing to wait (I don't really believe in Vanguard or WAR, sorry) then Spellborn is the one that intrigues me the most.

You might also try Ryzom: it's a sandbox game, free & unlimited on the small noob island, and it has the nicest community I've ever seen. However, whether you might like it or not depends on your age and open-mindedness.

Try Guild Wars. It's very different. No grinding and silly quests. Give it a try.
  • MajorBiggsMajorBiggs Member UncommonPosts: 709

If your computer can handle it, i'd say try Saga Of Ryzom.

Currently im pretty busy with schooling, so I play City Of Villains. We just had a double xp weekend and it was fun as hell. I've soloed this entire time...fun stuff. I haven't gotten bored with it yet. But the next game on my list to resubscribe to is Saga Of Ryzom. And then EVE prolly :-/.

To be honest it doesn’t sound to me like you are really that into the MMORPG format.  Other then WoW the only games you speak highly of are FPS and RTS. I’d probably point you away from the MMO’s altogether into an online game, perhaps something along the lines of Battlefield 2142.

I'm merely discussing video games here. I didn't type out a life story of each experience in video games, and obviously it wasn't enough to give a decent impression.

It was a while ago, but I think I remember a text box up on my screen when I came back to the computer. The guy had logged off by the time I had come back, however. I had got up to do something and I had auto-pilot on jumping through about 28 systems. I wasn't going to sit there and stare at it for an hour. The ship I was in would not have put up a fight anyways, so it'd be useless to try to fight back, I'd imagine. In conclusion, I was simply traveling. Not egging someone on or trying to draw fire to myself.

Do you follow the same system as I? If I'm not having fun in a game, I throw it out because it's taking up space. I tried to play it some more, but I finally gave up after a while. EVE is a team-game and obviously didn't find a decent corp for me to start with.

Making observations of someone you don't know outside the gaming world is bad practice. You don't know me, nor do you know my values.

I appreciate everyone's input. I'll look around at some of the stuff you guys suggested. I forgot to mention that I have also played BF 2142 for a while, but the massive load times on each map. I have a decent machine, and the load times are utterly insane. The games good and smooth, just too much loading to it. I jump on to play for small amounts of time, and by the time it loads, it's time to leave. :-

I agree with being an FPS / RTS type of person more. I only played WoW for as long as I did because of the people I knew. But I also like the idea of character advancement like Planetside had. I just hate playing for no reason in games like Counter-Strike. I like to stand out from new players or vice-versa.

Grrrrrr.........I'm thinking about Company of Heroes.....Best Buy will give a $10 gift card with the purchase, and I have a 10% off coupon, so that makes the game equal to $35.

On the other hand, I was thinking of buying Vanguard......Grrrrrrr.........I hate these choices........Grrrrr

Dont be a jack because someone doesnt like to PvP like u do. So he got blasted for no reason, he got pissed, I was too when I got blasted. There is not much fun in jumping into a system, seing a bunch of red guys locking onto you, trying to right click somewhere on the screen to pull up a list of objects I could warp to (hard to do with shaky hands) and praying my lock goes faster then theirs. I played Eve for severals months in total, and I didnt PvP once there - I dont like PvP in Eve, its way too complex. I liked the trading and crafting. I had a few close calls but those were acceptable risks. I quit becuase of time issues, becuase I wasnt gonna risk all my fortunes trying to mine in low sec space (I didnt seem to fit recruiting profile for any major corp) and becuase people had attitude like you - if you dont like it, eat it.  Pirates like you give bad rep to Eve community. Picking up noobs who cant even lock onto you and then boasting "Go back to WoW, carebare noob" is just an expression of your own noobishness (if such word exist).

You sir are a pirate, in real life.

More info would be required to suggest u a game:

    - how much time do u spend  playing per day (on average)

    - do you like grouping or solo all the way?

    - do you like best: Crafting, PvE, questing, PvP, housing, harvesting, socializing, raiding (list in order)

    - do you like fantasy or scifi settings?

    - do you like to have fun at level 1 but get to high end fast and get stuck there or you dont mind spending a lot of time and effort (usualy means grinding) to get to the juicy and fun high end?

Those are just a few questions that could help us make a suggestion. Best is if you could describe what you are realy looking in a game.

    Peace

Just as a word of advice...

If you're flying through 0.0 (and don't tell me you didn't know, the Autopilot tells you it's route before you even begin), don't go away from the keyboard.  Come back and check, or stay near the computer.  Hell, use the Autopilot as a guide and warp yourself (you can get to the gates sooner, and if you're in a slow ship that's a lifesaver).

Try giving EVE another try.  If you played for three days and lost the ship you had, I can't imagine it'd take much work to rebuild.  I've been playing for a while now, and for my first ships I lost countless frigates to NPCs and pirates.  But I didn't quit.  I collected the insurance (usually for a bit more than what it was bought for, if I'm lucky) and brought myself back up.

I play EVE for the risk, for the impact.  You make a difference.  There are consequences, but there are rewards as well.  Maybe I just don't agree with the whole "No risk, all reward" factor.  It's one thing to have "uber" stuff in the game.  It's another to have it destroyed and scammed away, only to rise from the ashes and learn from your mistakes.  It's punishing and puts off many, but not me.  I'd hope you give EVE another chance, but I understand if you don't want to.

    - Average time I play per day really depends. I used to come home in the afternoons and go straight on the computer if no one was doing anything around town during the day / night. Weekends if nothing is going on (most of the time this is the case) I spend roughly 13 hours on the computer I guess. 26 per weekend?

    - Group or solo really doesn't matter. I will group if need be and if it's required, I try to get into either a big guild / outfit / organization and make friends. New people over and over gets old.

    - PvE, Raiding, PvP, Socializing, Questing, Crafting, Housing, Harvesting

    - I really like space-games lately. But I can go with any genre, really if the story is good and thought out.

    - If there is content waiting for me at the end of a grind, it's time well spent. Like in WoW, new 60's have a ton of stuff to do, but it doesn't hold up for long. RFOnline had little to nothing after grinding rather than stomping people's faces in.

Thanks for the questionnaire, jimmy. :)

Too all the EVE guys: I really have actually thought about returning to it since the clan I'm in has recently shown light interest in it. Just a couple of guys, though. Anyways, I just feel the game would take a lot of time that I don't have left. After all, I really only have 5 months left in me. EVE will probably be there after college, but who knows. If I can come back to it and still be decently-placed in the field of players, it'd be worth it.

Do you guys think I could take some time off from EVE and be able to pick it right back up again? Not saying all the knowledge I need to retain, but rather...will the game extend past me and eventually I'd be pushed back to the beginning?

Guild Wars is good for casual and hardcore players alike; as I like to say, it doesn't demand your time, but you rather invest time into it to grow into a better player. I don't really know about Ryzom's "time requirements", but - being a sandbox game - I'd imagine it feels less like you've "fallen behind". Spellborn ain't out yet. :P

    - Group or solo really doesn't matter. I will group if need be and if it's required, I try to get into either a big guild / outfit / organization and make friends. New people over and over gets old.
GW can be either solo'ed (with AI henchmen) or grouped, although it's a team game. About Ryzom, I hear soloing doesn't get you far and socializing is strongly encouraged. Spellborn ain't out yet. :P

    - PvE, Raiding, PvP, Socializing, Questing, Crafting, Housing, Harvesting
With this order, it's a little hard to fit any of the three games I suggested.
Guild Wars has good PvE, a limited number of "elite missions" (which can be compared to raiding, as they require time and are very difficult) but the party size is limited to 8-12, so you won't be raiding with 40 people at once. PvP is awesome and basically GW's endgame, as PvE tends to get old sooner or later; the PvP in GW is voluntary and only in special areas (so you can't get ganked). Socializing can be a bit tough in a game like GW, most people don't just sit there and AFK because it's action-oriented. There is limited crafting (by NPCs), and no housing or harvesting.
Ryzom, conversely, would be awesome for PvE and socializing (again, best community ever) but it's all about crafting and harvesting, which you seem to like the least. There seems to be occasional and mass PvP between the factions, and I haven't heard of raiding. Last, there is almost no questing in Ryzom besides on noob island.
Spellborn - again - ain't out yet ^^ but it looks interesting enough from both the PvE and PvP aspects.

    - I really like space-games lately. But I can go with any genre, really if the story is good and thought out.
GW is fantasy, although very different from the Tolkien standard (no orcs, elves and the like), and its plot/s is/are good. Ryzom is a fantasy/sci-fi, while I guess Spellborn is supposed to be an exotic fantasy more planar-oriented.

    - If there is content waiting for me at the end of a grind, it's time well spent. Like in WoW, new 60's have a ton of stuff to do, but it doesn't hold up for long. RFOnline had little to nothing after grinding rather than stomping people's faces in.
GW has little to no grind. Ryzom has grind, but you create your own rewards rather than drop them. Spellborn ain't out yet. :P

Heading to VMI huh?? Well, forget about playing any mmo for a long ....long time...Get ready for standing guard every few nights and running on lil bits of sleep...Once you hit the real military you will be thinking about how to take care of your men if  you plan to be a good officer......Every once in a while you may be able to play an mmo on leave....other than that forget it....

if you don't have a group of friends to play with most mmorpgs are boring, and if you do have a group of friends to play with it really doesn't matter what mmorpgs you play. EQ2 and WoW  would be on the top of my list though if i was looking for MMO to play or recommending one to someone.
