Been playing since preorder beta. So far I think good graphics, good game play, good mechanics, good grouping, good fun.
Started online gamming when I beta tested Meridian59, then went to EQ the day it was released. Played Camelot for two years. and have played most every other game out there. I preordered Horizons and the book. I played for two months and decided it wasn't my game. All I know is City of Heroes is a blast, no looting, no camping, no killing bats, no money, and the chicks are hot. Nice change and a nice new genre. Will I like it a month from now? Who knows, I don't own a crystal ball. We all fall from a different tree and one man's trash, is another man's treasure. Who am I to knock any game? If you enjoy it what difference does it make what I think?
Hope to see you all in release have fun and drive fast and reckless.
Nuff said, go kick some booty.

Whee! I'm a hot chick
That said, I agree 100%. I think this game is one of the most amazing and cutting-edge to come out in a long time. The potential for explansion is so vast and the limited options for playing outside the realm of gameplay is decent.
I have high hopes for the success of CoH as well as the longevity

Completely agree. I love how you can just jump right into the game and in a matter of minutes be in a group doing a mission.
It's a lot different from FFXI standing around for half an hour looking for a PT .
Anyways, although it's only been a week i've been playing i can so far say that this is one of my favourite MMO's and i hope it has enough content to play for at least a couple months.
With the game not even at release yet, expect to see new additions to the game in the future

So far so good. I personnaly like loot in a game, but I haven't really missed it in CoH. Teaming is a blast, I willl join a Super Group when I get the final version, but until then I'm loving it.
Glad to hear that Saranth,
Thats all you can hope for. Time will tell and I am looking forward to release. Hope to see you in Paragon City.

which one is true?
they are opinions, my friends.
This game is a LOT of fun, but the missions do seem to be very uninspired, which can give you that repetative feel.
Some people need more, so they get bored, and some people dont, and they have lots of fun no matter what their missions are.
The only truth you'll find is your own, when you try it and decide for yourself

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
Anything can get repetitive if you play it long enough. The main problems for me, after playing for about 2 months, are the lack of mission tiles and mission variety. There are only a couple mission tiles - an office building, a rundown office building, a warehouse and sewers, there are also missions that take place on the regular world map (i.e. find and kill 10 Circle of Thorns wizards in Kings Row). Missions mainly revolve around combat with an occasional "delivery mission" and one, that I am aware of, mission that requires you to read a plaque near a statue. However, most of the combat missions have a twist to them. Either saving hostages or finding clues or even disarming bombs. Not to mention that the storylines are great, if you take the time to read them.
Then again, I've been playing this game for a few months and definatly longer than any other MMORPG besides UO, which I played, on and off, for about 3 years.
What keeps me coming back for more are the combat and the AI. Both are definatly some of the best out of any MMORPG I have ever played. The combat is fast, furious and yet it has this perticular randomness factor where even a fight against easy enemies can sometimes become a hard fight.
The AI makes the enemies run if you overwhelm them, and usually run towards their friends. Which can turn perticularly deadly if you're not carefull or if you're a blaster or controller.
Besides, Cryptic has a content patch scheduled 4 weeks after release, so if the game got a little repetitive to me after 2 months of play during beta, after release I doubt that I'll ever get bored.
Anyway, I can't compare it to SWG because I have never played it but the repetetiveness is nowhere as bad as Lineage 2. Lineage 2 is just horrible.
Yeah its amazing how little people seem to read in the tutorial section, the number of newbies i group with who don't know to press the green mission complete thingy to teleport straight out is weird considering how clearly it is written in the tutorial. It does make me wonder if lack of reading will adversely affect the whole mission storyline attempt to make the game more interesting.
Regarding the sameness of the missions also, I have been told that they do have more interesting maps when you get up to higher lvls, more special rooms and so forth. But so far I have 4 chars at lvl 11 and heaps of lower due to the fact that i prefer to explore the different character types so i have no high lvl experience.
It really is a surprise to see the AI in the fighting in the game though, I started on everquest where very few mobs had decent attacks and generally the reason you died to them was the game gave them huge hitpoints and very nasty damage. Here the mobs start having special attacks similar to player attacks around lvl 8 and they use them, I play a cleric and crowd control, and I am used to mezzing nasty mobs, but to have them chain-mezz me instead.... at lvl 9, was quite a shock, lol. It is much harder to single pull, plus you get things like ambushes waiting outside the elevators in office buildings, or mobs sniping you from ledges in the cave missions.
Plus the fact that you actually have to press every attack, no more 'press autoattack, go get a cup of coffee' I really think that, even though they took alot of the classic MMORPG stuff out, they did what they did do well.
When I first got into CoH beta, about 2 months ago, I really had a lot of fun. Creating a character, and going around the city stopping bad guys from commiting crimes is a lot of fun.
But now I'm bored of the game, the missions are all pretty much the same, so the first time you do a mission it's a whole lot of fun, but the 100th time, it's just boring. Also you need to do a LOT of missions to get anywhere in this game. Unfortunately there isn't anything to do except missions, or killing random street urchins. Which I have done plenty of in other mmorpgs. I don't think this game is going to last long unless they add a lot more content regularly. I won't be buying the game after beta is finished unless there is a damn good expansion. It seems to be another game cutting corners and trying to hook gamers who "just want that next skill/power/ability".
Some ideas:
Being able to own your own vehicle/ apartment/ business which makes money, and sometimes is attacked by street thugs. Something to do besides level grinding, like gambling. Being able to play as a villain. More well designed missions, like ie the riddler leaves a puzzle for the heroes to find, which they need to solve, to find out his whereabouts. Giving people a chance to sit down together and talk about something. Socialisation seems lacking in this game. There is no resting period, where you just sit and talk to each other, you will always be fighting generic enemies. When I imagined City of heroes I hoped it would be a fully functional city. Instead I see empty concrete blocks, shaped as buildings, and random useless sprites shaped as people. I want to be able to get a job, pretend I'm just another civilian, then run around the corner and come out in my superhero outfit, ready to save the day.
I would have posted these in the CoH beta forums if I had access to them.

Well, I agree 100% with what Geld said.. sound bad? Not really. This game is fun! That makes it great. The graphics are great. That makes it pretty to look at. I have a level 17 controller and I too see the end to this game. BUT! thats assumming the dev's don't read boards or care enough to listen to the teeming masses crying out into the dark allys for more content and life sucking attributes interwoven into this game. I have preordered and will play on day of release. This game is a breath of fresh air, and I will stay at least till I am convinced to move on. Come on people, I don't drive down the road and throw $50 bucks out the window ether, but it's only $50 bucks! It's not a down payment on a autombile.
My hats off to the peeps with the imagination and forsight to step outside the common bountries and strike out with a bold new adventure.
Nuff said, now go out there and kick some booty!

CoH is as solo friendly as EQ. If you solo at all you are reduced to grinding for exp to be able to do your missions and for influence to buy enhancements. The kill missions they give are all designed for groups or twinks. With out the best enhancements you can barely take out mobs your own lvl. The hunt 10 of xxx missions are made more difficult by all the kill stealers in the game. I had 1 such mission where I was down to 3 more kills, I found a group of 5 of the required mobs and happily started kicking their butts but was only able to kill 1 because 3 higher lvl blasters ran over and AoE'ed the group to death while I was still fighting the first 1 I attacked. This type of thing has happened to me many times in CoH and I've heard others complaining about it too. I could put up with the repetative missions if they put in a system that tailored them for you/your group similarly to how EQ does the LDoN adventures.

Gosh Reddog00, I hate to admit... But I mostly agree with you. I have had nothing but praise for this game. (And still do) But after two weeks of playing and level 17 Controller in beta, the release for preorders is tomorrow, and I really don't have any desire to play. But I have preodered, and will start tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed the dev's are listening as this game has a solid foundation. It has been fun and very easy to get started which is a plus. Lets hope for the best.
See you in Paragon City slayers of ill doers

If you play CoH in the same style that you have played SWG, EQ or DAoC when it comes to fighting mobs, you will not enjoy this game. You have to take the 'hunt' style of level advancement out of the picture. Sure, it is easy enough to run around the city and kill mobs but the game is very bland if you do that. To get the best experience, missions are where it is at. Beyond the individual missions, there are also Task Force missions. These missions require several groups of heroes to complete. And there are rumors that there will be SuperGroup (the term for guilds) based missions as well after release.
A key point for folks to remember is that what we have experienced thus far is beta material. Do not expect that you will have seen all of the content that will be in release. Further, post release is when the CoH storyline starts. This ongoing storyline will impact the missions and the mobs you are encountering. It is very easy to become bored with a beta of any game if you spend enough time with it because you really are working with static content and a limited view of the world. For example, HQ's for SuperGroups are not in the beta. These will be coming shortly after release thus satisfying the need for a 'GuildHouse'. There are interim provisions to still allow SuperGroups to have a shared vault to put enhancements and inspirations in so the main functionality is there but the pretty skin and the satisfaction of having a 'home' are just a short ways away.
All that said, CoH won't appeal to everyone and some people will find it boring because they prefer to play in a manner supported by games like EQ and SWG. If, however, you are looking for a change of pace, enjoy action and aren't a die hard MMOG crafter, then you should probably give CoH a look.
Finally, I must say in regards to the devs, this is a Grade A team insofar as staying in tune with the community. They are communicative publicly and privately, they have listened to and directly responded to tester feedback and they have not been swayed by the highly vocal minority that would seek to essentially change CoH into a clone of an EQ type game. If you haven't participated on their beta boards as a tester, you missed out on 1/2 the experience.
Well the game any way you look at it is pretty undiverse. What there are like 40 different things that a mob you kill will drop into your inventory. Come on??? How can 40 game items keep ones interest peaked?? I did not play EQ or SWG because they just did not cut the mustard either. Yes the gameplay is fun in CoH but for a very limited time. The devs were the best I have ever seen in dealing with their community. But that does not make up for the shallowness. A very different kind off MMOG it is and I think it is probably the best one to hit the market so far BUT the grinding and repetitiveness is just bad You do a mission to what? 2 things: Kill mobs to gain experience and push the story along. Thats it! What more is there after the novelty of timed combat wears off? Nada.
Yes CoH is a different type of MMOG but it still does nothing to keep a player wanting more in my eyes. I hope other people like the game because the devs deserve to reap the rewards of their efforts. I just have no taste to play after just 2 weeks. Why is that? I do not care to even try to get deeper in the story. If I wanted a story I would go read a book. If I wanted to kill mobs I would play CoH. Something big is missing and contributes to my utter lack of interest for this title even though it is a pretty cool setting for a game and plays pretty much flawlessly. Even with the introduction of PvP and more content I do not see anything that will change about this title. I am wishing for the devs to make it better but from what I see it just cannot happen.

ok for the missions want to make a few points on this. I dont think they have put in all the missions yet. I think they held back but put enough in to give you a tast and to give them some idea how well they will work. Second if you do them like you would a quest in all MMORPG your going to get bored really fast. The fact is the missions have a reason behind them. Its telling you a store and leading you some were. Were that is who knows. Now in beta its pretty basic but when it goes live and if im right they will be more missions then you can count which means there going to be so many story lines going on that you shouldn't have a problem with getting bored.
Remember point of beta is for them to get players in and balance out the game and test things make sure every thing works the way it shoudl before launch. Its not to give you the whole package. So there lot of things they havent put in Beta that will end up in when it launches on Sunday.
Also not some one said tomorrow it doesnt go in to Pre-launch till some time Sunday and only players who have bought the pre order will be allowed in. Every one else will have to wait till wed.
You should never get bored with this game. If you think of it in terms of all the other MMORPG you will be bored silly in no time. This game is built around SuperHeros so act the part be a Superhero. The game is so much fun. You want grinding and staring at your Exp bar for hours on end hoping to make progress and feeling like you are getting now where go play L2. If you want a game were its so fun you dont even really pay attention to your exp bar or how fast you level then CoH is for you.
You dont have to worry about saving money to go buy armor. You dont have to worry about any thing other then having fun. Its simple to play an not hard to figure out how every thing works. You can't retrain in any thing but you dont have to. The game is Idiot proof, no matter what you do you flat out can not gimp your character.
Now the only thing I haven't really seen is the Events which are gone happen once a month but what ive heard is that there awsome beyond belife. So I highly recommend this game. Forget all the others they suck in compared to COH.
You will have fun but dont take my word for it go buy it and try it out for your self.
