EQ2 is tiny in comparison to Vanguard. EQ2 is tiny compared to any other game than WoW which is miniscule compared to Vanguard. Vanguard puts the MASSIVE in MMO. If you put EQ2 and WoW together Vanguard would still be a bigger game. I think the only game out right now that has it beat on content and world size is EQ.
It's not fair to compare them, really, because Vanguard is newly released and has all the issues of a new release, whereas EQ2 has been out for 2+ years now and has had a lot of the bugs worked out of the system.
Vanguard appeals the most to folks who liked EQ and the EQ style and approach to MMOs. That's probably the best barometer as to whether you would like Vanguard (note ... EQ, not EQ2).

I've got to say I agree with this. You cannot judge a new game on release with a highly experienced game such as EQ. I'm sure Vanguard will live up to, if it hasn't begun to already, all the hype and euphoria surrounding it. It looks like a stroke of brilliance, and may in time surpass even the wonderous EQ series. Only time will tell .

Dark & light's world is probably twice as big as Vanguards. see where I'm going? vanguard is only bigger in terms of world size.
howdy warcry, i wont be able to answe this with any truth or even a good opinion until i have played it for 2 years like i played eq2 for 2 years, so far they seem completly different, i couldnt say either one is better, just different so far.

If I HAD to choose right now, I would choose EQ2 over Vanguard, but I'm fairly sure that in a couple month's time, Vanguard will appeal to me more. I have station access and play both games, but Vanguard has a little too many issues for me to fully enjoy playing it right now (though the last patch helped a lot). There's a lot potential in Vanguard, and I really enjoy its harvesting/crafting more than EQ2's new dumbed down WoW-like approach. Also I think diplomacy is a nice and fun feature (could get boring in the long run perhaps, but fun for now).
If you have station access already, I would definitely recommend getting Vanguard. If not, I would wait a few months for Sigil to iron out the worst bugs and performance issues.
I think it's hard to compare EQ2 and Vanguard, because imo, they target different players. EQ2 is a lot more solo and casual friendly than Vanguard, while Vanguard has a lot on offer for the hardcore gamer, who enjoys very challenging content and have a lot of time on his/her hands. In EQ2 you'll have no problems soloing your way to the level cap, whereas in Vanguard, the challenge to do so is extreme for the average player (like myself), with a severe death penalty to make it even harder. You are pretty much forced to group, which is a double-edged sword imo.
I've heard some about what vanguard has, but the combat is what is holding me off from it. From what I've been told, it's pretty much the same fluffy magical stuff. How does the combat in vanguard compare to eq2 or even most mmo's so far? I tend to be real picky, I like to see my character do what the skill sais, instead of some flashy poof. I also like to be in first person and actualy see the weapon or other gear. Eq2 combat was decent enough for me, it was the rest of the game that bored me to no end.
I hate leveling and I realy dont like the same old class systems, but I hear vanguard uses them but goes somewhat beyond, true?

Vanguard has a choice of first-person or third-person rendering. Both allow first-person and third-person views by use of the mouse scroll wheel. Confused? First-rendering renders the world as though from the viewpoint of your character's eyeballs. You see parts of your own gear in combat, and the world bounces and shakes as you move around. Third-person rendering does not show your characters personal effects when in first-person view. I use third-person rendering in first-person view most of the time, because I don't like the bouncy world effects. I thought I would prefer third-person over-the-shoulder view, but I don't at the moment.
Characters do swing weapons, move their arms portentously when casting spells, and go through appropriately-styled motions when harvesting and crafting. Whether the effects are realistic or lame is a matter of judgment. I have not paid much attention to them. I have been paying more attention to my combat opponents to avoid losing experience.
All EQ2 really has going for it over Vanguard is polish.
What Vanguard has that EQ2 can't begin to compare to:
- A huge open and zoneless world.
- An interactive crafting system unlike any other MMORPG.
- You can use diplomacy to advance yourself, you can alter the world with your diplomacy, and the act of diplomacy itself is a skill based card game.
- Player housing, guild owned towns, and the potential for this being a staging ground for PvP conflict in the future as guard towers are already supported.
- Boatmaking and customization.
- A more interactive combat system than EQ2 with reactions and sympathetic powers, and much more.
- The basis for the most advanced character creation system outside of City of Heroes. Things like more hair styles and clothing options can easily be plugged into the existing system.

At this point I would say EQ2... That being said, given time... say till vanguards first expansion and judging the way SOE has been screwing up EQ2 for an expansion or two... I'd say Vanguard will be the better game in the long run.
At present EQ2 has comparable graphics (not quite as good but close), more polish, and a better optimized engine. I think that will change over the next ~year.
I've never been one to bash the hell out of a game. However, I can't bring myself to understand why people think its so damn good. I really find it dull and boring. I think the character models are dull and boring. I just don't know about vanguard. It's really nothing I can get excited about. I'll try again next week.
One of the first things i heared about vangaurd was how nice it looked. I was very much looking forwad to this amazingly looking world. Started the game up and felt like i was playing Asherons call. The graphics in a playable mode on a medium end computer are terrible. Trees are simply 2d drawings and animations are so bad it seems like they put no effort into animations at al; amd animations shouldnt change depending on your settings. But im not one to get stuck on graphics so thought i would give it a go. My g/f tried it first and made her self a character at level 2 she ha dall her items taken away from her as part of a quest and was told to go kill some monsters with her bare hands. She found the mobs which were higher level than her and presently found out she cant kill them, is this forced grouping at level 2? If this is the case i cant see Vangaurd beating WOW at all as its been shown that games need to cater for both groups of players, solo and group. She quickly got bored of this and logged out so i made a character and logged in. I quickly found out the quests are written terribly and overall the leveling seems very grindy allready and im level 4. The amount of bugs i found in 1 hour of playing shocked me. I get a month free so will try it again in a week or so but on what i have seen so far i really beleive this game isnt good enough to compete with the games on the market right now. It feels alot like a EQ clone and not even a good EQ clone, on the plus side the instant regen after battle seems nice and the instant respawn of mobs seems like a good idea, untill you get to the agro mobs..
I have station accsess and ive been playing Vangaurd, and as of now, eq2
Vangaurd was fun and all at first, wow the world is so big!!..but my problem is that it is SO BIG, its to big, alot of area is pointless, just trees and mobs that serve no purpose to the game other than for it to be the biggest game in the lockeroom...WOOOHOO, i eman it took me an hour to get from the wood elf town to the asian themed human town....and its on a small island, what is the point of the game being this size, it will just spread the population into a vast area
I really liked the art especiaclly int he wood elf city, it really is fantastic but the buginess...and lag AHH the lag made me cringe
THe gameplay felt slow and choppy, the fighting was slow...and there werent really spell efects , i mean i expected the thunderbolt type of animation from 2004 to be worse than the one from 2007 but no , the eq2 thunderbolt animation is wayyyyyyyyyy better just as an example
The graphics were good, but they seemed inconsistant, ins ome areas, they were incredibly rich and detailed, while in others completely flat and devoid of textrure, and actually i think eq2 has better graphics
vangaurd has alot of potential but it seems to me that alot vangaurd is more behind than ahead, if realesed say in 2003 befor eq2 and wow im sure id be amazed at it, but eq2 and WoW have changed the standerds, people dont want and enldless uber grind evercrak style, they want a GAME key word GAME, a thing they can sit down for an hour two maybee even three at a time and just have fun, not grinding to be the highest and most uber, just to get a place to escape from the hastle of there real lives and just have a little fun
which is why i dont believe vangaurd is gunna be an amazing sucsess and id choose eq2 or even WoW over it any day
Vanguard needs more work, and lots of it! The animations are terrible, the character generation only just passes as 2nd Gen. The newbie experience is poor. The way they have setup the quest dialogs is annoying. I have only played a few hours over a few characters so far but at the moment I would say its a 2nd Gen game, it plays just like EQ2 and WoW. One day I am sure we will see a 3rd Gen mmorpg that when we play it we know its next gen.
WoW set a new standard for the level of quality required on release and Vanguard is months away from it. WoW is so popular because they had a solid product on day 1. The interface was good, the newbie experience was solid. When you log into WoW for the first time it is a nice clean easy process to get into game. VG is clunky, does some wacky odd things and displays odd graphical things players should never see (reminds me of Horizons to be honest).
Vanguard may be worth playing in 6 to 12 months time, I am going to force myself to play a few more hours but expect I will end up back with EQ2.
So now that Vanguard hit the stores, and all people is tring his content.

Thats what they said about DnL. Vanguard's Massive World, just like DnL's Massive World have led to many of the problems you see in both games.
When it comes to an actual playable experience, I would go with EQ2. However, I am not fond of either game. Both are practically the same, and totally boring.

And we all love empty virtual real estate, don't we?
I may give Vanguard a try but not now. From what I read it seems to be a grind treadmill like EQ1 with prettier graphics. The size of the world means absolutely nothing to me, what is in the game world matters more. You make the world too big and you're spreading out the players too thinly. This is why SOE consolidated EQ1 servers 2 years ago, population decline meant you could go several zones before seeing anyone else.
EQ2 is a great game. They have made it more for casual play and well the graphics are just amazing. With the Fae release they really took the game to the next lvl. I have played the Vanguard beta and the first few days of the release. As it matures it may become funner to play but personally I just could not get into the game.

Vanguard and eq2 has at least 1 thing in common.
they both suck.
my opinion of course.
I agree on this
