low quality You Tube version can be found here ...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vM6bz-Z6-Ew

I however STRONGLY recommend the high res download from the DF site, it's only 50 megs and well worth it.  The level of graphical detail as apparent in any of the close up shots is amazing, eg. the wood work on the ships, the detailed player armor and weapon models, markings on buildings and  the way the sails bluster in the breeze!

    I also forgot to mention

    ++ realistic physics

++ collision detection making realistic battle tactics finally possible!

The way they move looks very unnatural.

I smell the stink of Dark & Light's rotting corpse on this game. The graphics in the video were suprisingly bad (yes, I have seen the high-res), and that wasn't naval battle. As far as I could tell, the ships weren't even moving; they're just props with cannons on them.

Looks OK, some aspects in the art direction don't look too hot like animations, textures, and techniques used.  If they get the other things good then it should make up for it.

On Naval Combat, it usually is very hard to move and fire at the same time and usually takes a couple hours to get used to.  I can see everyone in the ship complaining to the captain to stop so they can aim and shoot.  At the beginning they did show them moving in.

true, graphics are not AoC level, but they were aiming for low poly count (or so i heard) so thats what you get. But who honestly cares? Darkfall offers so much more than any other mmorpg in the near future. Graphics only take you so far.
  • dark-merlindark-merlin Member Posts: 314

the graphics are beyond reproach when you think of the low poly count they work with to minimize lag from FPS combat

graphics are great (specifically Darkfall style) and the gameplay looks very fun

Will combat be completely twitch based?

    Otherwise, I'm = Meh

combat is twitch based iirc.  None of this standing 5 hours for you're turn :p

I think the graphics are fantasitc, especially when you consider the scale of battles there will be.  Anything more would mean you need a monster machine to run em on.

They look much better than what Vanguard's offering IMO, and will actually run on a "normal" computer.

As to the guy who made the comments about the ships not moving... you can't have both realistic physics and ships that accuratly hit when they fire if you have to actually aim the damn cannons.  This isn't an xbox360 auto aim game, or a pirates of the carribean movie set.   You want to hit a target from a ship with cannons, you're prolly gonna have to park you're ass

The movements of the combat seemed somehow off to me.

The naval battle was pathetic. The animations were crappy, as well as the explosions. No damage could be seen being done to the ship, it just descended straight down into the water.

I'm not much impressed with the video. Its vaporware until proven otherwise.

looks like whoever has better twitch, and can jump the most wins.  well thats what the players will turn it into(the devs don't want to show that since it annoys soo many)

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

when it goes to twitch over brain.  it becomes pointless to play.  so alas I'm counted out of a open PvP game that'll flop and reinforce the major Devs ideas that no one wants open PvP.

Ugh--yeah that would totally ruin the RPG (immersion) for me: Jump Jousting! Just say No! No to Jump Jousting! lol

Well, you might want to consider that just about no MMOs requires a great deal of brain. Only a good guide to explain where to get all the good stuff.

That said, you can still have all the stats, tactics and so on and so you'll have in a normal MMO. Combine that with twitch based combat, and you'll actually have a game that requires skill for a change.

Ohh please, there are alot of people that want open pvp, Just look how active the Darkfall main forum is. If you don't like it it's one thing but don't come saying there is noone that want open PvP.

And well darkfall is looking great, i have been following the game for about 5 and a half year now. Just don't be to overexcited about it.
  • paulscottpaulscott Member Posts: 5,613
I love open Player Vs Player myself,  but if darkfall flops for whatever reason it'll just reinforce the current thinking that its a bad idea.

no most MMO's don't require a brain persay,  but if you're the kind of person who likes to unhide semi-hidden mechanics and work out the best system for just about anything in the game or RL it does.

The bits where they played in-game sound seemed pretty well done.  And you can never be sure how good they did at vidcapping but it's safe to say this game's graphics look a lot better than most MMORPGs, so it's hard to guess what some people are comparing them to.

I admit that I don't see the whole fascination with strafe-shooting and jump-jousting in the first place.  But I can't help but think the competition from like a hundred console games might hurt subscriptions just a little bit.  Trying to stick a "role-playing game" label on something like that might fool a few of the kind of people who have access to credit cards for a while, but it's hard to see how that could last very long.

Darkfall isn't the only game going that way either. Oh well. I'm really just waiting for them to come out so I can see what all the fuss is actually going to ammount to, instinctively it seems like if there is any way to maximize your movement speed you'll have a huge advantage. Maybe I should try DDO or Asheron's Call or something that has done twitchiness before.

People like opne pvp, maybe not all of them but many do. Lineage 2 is very active and if it wasnt for its sadder than life economy the game would have triple the amount of players. Dark Fall is offering me something i can already in EvE online but in a fantasy setting and ive been waiting for this a long time, so i hope development goes smoothly.

Well then, it's not really naval combat then, is it? What do you think happened when fighting ships engaged in battle? They'd just park next to each other and fire away? Blackbeard would keelhaul you for even suggesting it. Ship to ship combat is about mobility and tactics. This is just two forts built a few yards apart, whittling away at each other until one "sinks." That part had a champion animation, by the way.

This game is like a dressed-up RYL that pretends to be better than it actually is...

Just a couple of quick points to make.

MMORPGs have not been about "role-playing" for a long time now.  The only realy role-playing that happens tends to be on RP dedicated servers in most MMO's.  In all other servers it's the same old same old...

    grind

    get the best items

    get the highest level

    show off massive e-peen

    socialise

    grind some more

    pvp if you can etc.

To say that people strafing or jumping ruins immersion is pretty ridiculous.

Also TWITCH combat and THINKING aren't mutually exclusive.  Take starcraft.  It's the most BALANCED and DEEP RTS game ever created with countless possibilities and still new strategies being invented EVERY DAY for it ten years after it's release.  But in South Korea where people get paid to play the game professionally on TV the top PRO's can go up to 400-600 actions PER MINUTE, that's 600 mouse clicks/ key presses in one frigging minute.  But just because the pro's are skilled and so fast that the twitch portion of the game has become a reflex does not mean there is no strategy involved.

THere will be plenty of strategy in Darkfall, and the thinking player will have pleanty of advantage, but there will be a balance of strategy and skill, don't expect to win if you have only one and none of the other.

Also the reason FPS players love jumping is because of a bad habbit from Quake, to avoid splash damage.  I used to jump around all the time when i played DAOC, no one else seemed to mind and a lot of other players didnt.  It'll be the same in darkfall.  Ex-quakers /FPS players will jump out of habbit, others wont.

But personally for me the immersion comes from compelling game play and open ended PvP that is goal oriented, not from 'Let's cyb0r hotelf3192'

Maybe you didn't notice but those two ships were fighting in a small bay, at pretty close quarters, not much room for 'mobility' when 30 cannons are sinking you in a few seconds.  Naval warfare in the open sea would probably be fairly different.

Also I noticed one of the ships in the video actually moving into position before it opened fire, maybe you should watch more closely.   I'm sure there is nothing in the game that prevents you from moving AND firing at the same time, though it's probably not as accurate to aim if you are moving  (which makes sense?)  It's ridiculous to say that the "combat sucks" because the people playing fought that way or because whoever made the video didn't think it was necessary to depict "moving ships" etc.

THere will always be someone who nit picks over pointless details.

There will always be someone who conjectures about a game he's never played because he's desperate for one that is made according to his personal wishes. Darkfall is just the latest lightning-rod for jaded gamers looking for an impossible idealized MMO.

Id like to point out one thing which naysayers may have overlooked. This game intends to have a 10k person limit on the server. The ship sinking seemed kinda stupid but if you think abotu it...calculating damage and having destructible sections will be a large issue for the servers to handle once the server is populated, which also explains why the devs went for the low poly count. You cant possibly run graphics on a massive level and have optimal performance with close to 10k people doing their own thing.

I hope the devs finish this soon and well get a chance to truly see if the game will be good or not.

As far as twitch based combat i can see no better otion out there, its a skill based game primarily therefore you shouldnt be able to win just cuz you have more free time than everyone else and got the uber armor/lv (though lv wont be in game rather than skill lv). And for the record i suck at FPS, i never played Quake/UT...played BF2 and im not to great at it, played Halo and i suck horribly and even still im exited that this game will be FPS control based. Simply because it wont be a boring click-this-skill-and-do-nothing-else-cuz-im-autolocked-to-the-poor-fool-who-im-nuking GAME.

Its a rather small dev team with seemingly low budgets trying to change the MMO status quo. And even if they fail i dont think itl spell death to open pvp or FPS style MMORPGs, every failure has inspired others to try and expand on the good ideas brought up by others and let go of the ones that didnt work or perhaps change them in a way which will make them succed. Thats what excited me about this game, the fact that its going out of its way to make a dent in the already monotonous MMORPG market filled with useless MMOs.
