Some questions

I have a few questions that can hopefully be answered without breaking NDA.

1. Is there any plan on implementing raids in this game? Just to clarify I HATE raiding, and want nothing to do with it so if the answer to this question is no I will preorder right away.

2. Is there a decent amount of character customization? I like to make really strange looking characters sometimes so I am wondering what the range of options are in this game.

3. Are there mounts? Not all that huge a deal to me as long as travel isn't SUPER long.

4. How does gear work? Are there certain levels you have to reach in order to be able to equip stuff (IE in WoW how there were no helmets till 30)? Is there a decent amount of gear available, or is it limited (IE FF11)?

If anyone could answer these I'd really appreciate it. If any are against NDA just say so. Thanks!

1(Raids) I do remember reading somewhere about large groups being able cooperate to take down the biggest mobs the gameworld has to offer.  Sounds like raid content to me.  Personally, I consider the big question to be how necessary that content is to reaching a character's potential.  If there are other ways of getting comparable rewards, i don't mind raid content being in the game.

2(Customization) I guess you mean visual customization at creation?  I'm not sure how that could be commented on without breaking the NDA, but maybe someone will anyhow.  I just want to say, a lot can change in that area, in three months, and it's often one of the last things to be added just prior to release.

    3(Mounts) and 4(Eq.Reqs) No comment.

It's still the plan. You should be able to get equal level gear from the limited raids (and never fear, it's about 1-2% of the raid power you saw in LOTRO: You can never raid and still get the top level gear, it just may not have the same name), solo adventuring and crafting. There is a thread on these forums where a guy listed a link to a recent dev chat at lotro Warcry. They touch on where the top gear comes from in the chat.

I saw a screen of a human riding a horse so I am guess mounts are in.

What I am wondering is how large the world is, and how freely a character can explore it. I like to climb mountains and stuff when I play MMO's. I know this cannot be answered without breaking NDA so it's not a question so much as a general wondering.

This is what i have read in dev chats and the official forums.

Yes there will be 24 man raids. Some raids will require 24 men others will be smaller raids that require only 12 men. Wich is 2 fellowships of 6 each. The best gear will not come from raids alone. You will get comparable  top end gear from soloing, crafting and raiding. The devs have said if you never want to raid you don't have to and it is not a requirement in order to get the best gear.

Character customization you will have to wait to play the game as far as i know.

Yes mounts are in . It is in the FAQ on the officials and has been confirmed in dev chats. Along with being able to sit in chairs.

You will have to wait to play the game to find out the answer to number 4.

    Hope this helps you out.

"How large is the game world planned for launch?"

"The approximate size of Eriador at launch is 50 million square meters."

compared to wow, how would that equal up? one continent? one zone size ( heavens no plz) or maybe two continents or more (heaven plz i love to explore)
  • GrindalyxGrindalyx Member UncommonPosts: 657
The only way to actually know how it measures up is to play the game. All we really know about the game size is by looking at the map of middle earth in the book. The top left corner of the map is eraidor. That is ther region that will be available during launch. The other regions will become available during expansions. Exactly how 50 million square meters measures out in the game in size there is no real way of telling until you are in the game.

My turn for a couple questions!!

Will you be able to have a last name?

Is the release date mmorpg.com gives confirmed?  Or just a speculation?

"Sir, the fish market is quickly emptying. I need you to out, get me 5 tuna, 4 blue snappers, 3, uh, Darkshore groupers, and 2 goldfish please. And then report to the docks. I'll see you there, goodbye."

  • panchoviapanchovia Member Posts: 31
they havent said anything about last names, but they probly will put in last names, maybe the "of" thing to

like *random name here* of the shire? that would be kool. but for the release mmorpg.com says that the date that turbine announced  they would release the game.

I hate to keep bringing up the same point but Turbine is notorius for making small worlds.

50 million square meters is a square 4.4 miles on a side.  About 3 or 4 WoW zones, or 12.5 Vanguard chunks, for comparison's sake.

  • CandidQualitCandidQualit Member Posts: 26
First off Size.  At launch it will be roughly 70% of the size of WoW, with as much content.

Just as many things to get into without so much wasted space in-between.  And notice I said at launch.  when all the updates are out it should be roughly seven to nine times the size!

    but back to the Op:

    1. Raids are one possibility, but not the only possibility.  there are 5 paths that can be followed and each one offers comparable rewards.

    2. Customization is one of the last things to get into the game.  No one knows what will be available for launch.  not even the beta testers(or media).  As far as getting strange. the races are limited by the books and they will not be allowed to deviate "at this time"™

    3. Mounts are fast travel and have been in for some time according to the dev chats.  As far as ridable mounts that you can direct, thay are in the plans(again according to dev chats) and will in all likelyhood make it to launch.

    4. No official answer available to the first part. As for the second part, it again falls under "fluff" or some of the final elements to be added into the game.  No one will have the answer to that untill launch.  Even open beta will not be granted full access to all items.

    Hope this helps a bit.

But keep in mind that they will be adding more land mass with every expansion. This is not the "entire" middle earth, just a section.

A larger world doesn't mean more content.

Vanguard is so big so they can have player housing.

The problem is that people want to be able to hike to mount doom on opening. They are not going to get that. The game will be adding pieces to the land mass as they update the game. So, there will be plenty of places to "explore". Just like any online game you just have to be a little patient. It's like a good book: you are not going to get everything in the prelude.

so, how are they gonna close off the boundaries of the game world? if they made frwaking big mountains to stop from getting to say rohan, it would ruin lore.

You'll just have to wait until open beta to see. I don't see it being a large issue, personally, because it allows them to actually expand and add new, solid content. If they put every single region in at launch, with the way many gamers play today (ala speed gaming), the content would get burned through and then there would be an outcry for more content. As it is they can put in quality content instead of being under the gun to just put something in to quiet the masses. It's also not like they aren't going to or don't have plans to add more regions and make the world larger. It's just at a pace that allows a great many players to get through all the current content and have as large a "new" audience for the additional content as possible. If they had no plans to expand the world, then yeah, I'd be worried. But they do, so personally I'm ok with it. BTW, I like to roam and explore as well.

Um, I'm pretty sure towns are not instanced. Not all zones are instanced either. Not even a majority. I'm pretty sure its only certain quests that are for lore purposes. It's not like Guildwars or DDO when talking about instances.

So pre-order open beta begins on March 30th.

The game comes out April 24th.

Pre-order open beta characters transfer to release.

You get a three week head start as a pre-order? Thats the way it looks to me. Am I wrong here?
