Don't buy Vista OEM...

Veiled_lightVeiled_light Member UncommonPosts: 855

I know the price of £350-400 (in the UK about $700 US) is very expensive for retail but you can download it off of BT or try get a cheaper version if you need it that much, otherwise wait for a cheaper retail version. WIndows Vista wont be needed until DX10 starts kicking in mid 2008 tbh and probally 2009 before it becomes in every game.

Anyways the OEM version can only be installed on one peice of hardware, you wont be able to install it on any other PC ever again. It's no use to the home user.

Windows OEM is £125 and Retail is about £350.

This is false information. The OEM versions are the same exact thing as the retail versions, the only difference is OEM does not include the box/packaging, and the manuals. It comes with the necessities only, being the installation disk, and the registration key. Also you susgest downloading Vista off Bit Torrent? Thats illegal. My current version of XP is pirated, and I suffer due to that. My OS is tagged "not geniune, its all over my startup screen, and the "not genuine" icon is constantly loaded in my task bar. Vista wont be any different.

    In the US anyways.

While I'm "buying" it off of BitTorrent right now, there are draw backs as Spath said.

You can't get the service packs, updates or anything off of window's because you need to validate you version of windows and it will come up as "not genuine".

Well.. my XP is illegal too(I have a geniune for my lappy...) but I got rid of all those annoying messages and processes. I even updated everything except IE and WMP.

Not going to buy Vista untill it actually deserves to be called Final... it's so buggy is really should be in alpha state right now.

as long as they didnt changed it in recent time

    vista is the shid

vista will watch which programms you install

if they dont want you to use a programm you wont be able to isntall it

    (hail to tcpa)

and their overhyped dx10 is more like dx9.1

nothing really new besides new fakes

and dont forget how much hardware power vista demands

    and for what?

some new functions noone really needs (besides industry x.x)

    so i stay with xp

and if the hackers cant crack the shid out of it i will change to linux

As with everything until I have somthing that actally REQUIRES me to buy Vista I an't touching it with a barge poll..

Vista is the software equililent of buying a HD DVD/Blu Ray product atm, paying overpriced amounts just because it's 'new'  but it's not really supported or used fully until at least 1-2 years down the line when it's going to possible be half or 1/3 the price it is now

    Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!

Try installing Daemon Tools and see what happens.  Report back, because I'm curious.

I'm not saying don't buy Vista, i'm saying leave the OEM version and buy the retail. It's veery expensive for retail atm so you'll probally not be able to afford it though.

lol next time you try to be cool and bash someone about his avatar

look closer or buy some glasses

my ava has blonde hair bebop got black

(looked up on google if my ava was really similiar to him)

btw linux can run also popular games like ut04 /  wow etc

its just more complicated than windows

and i can say it again vista is junk

    only problem is that

if we want to play always the newest games

we will be more or less forced to use it after a year or so

Vista SP1 is due out in March. I'll probably wait until after that to even consider buying it.

Any OEM version of Windows is tied to the PC it came with. It’s always been that way. The regular retail version is not, which is why it’s more expensive.

I don’t want Microsoft deciding what I can and can’t do with my computer, so I’m going to stay away from Vista for as long as possible.

I’d run that past your legal people if I were you. Microsoft doesn’t put OS licensing into their Enterprise agreements any more and Select required you to purchases each copy you install albeit at a pre-agreed price. Of course with a Select/Enterprise install CD you can put it pretty much wherever you want and they probably will never find out, but that’s a different story.

Just checked and I guess they moved the Service Pack release date. It now reads:

Windows Vista SP1 is expected to be released in Q4 alongside Windows Server Longhorn. SP1 is expected to feature a number of enhancements as well as security updates, and will be based on the Windows Server Longhorn code. Enhancements include the support for UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), which will replace the current BIOS architecture of new PCs.

I'll need to read about UEFI. I'm not sure how they are going to do that without the hardware manufacturers buy-in.

That information is ages old. Not only has the new OS not been called Longhorn in over a year, but its refering to Q4 2006, back before Vista was delayed from Q3 2006 to January 30th.

They decided to not go along with this feature becouse they noticed they were loosing alot of potential customers that mod their pc's.

I still dont know if i should "buy" vista.

This may sound stupid but why exactly are you buying vista anyway? Is there some purpose for it yet that is greater than XP? I won't be getting Vista until my laptop dies or I upgrade which will be a long ways off

Bought it, love it and couldn't be happier with it. Since I'm only using it on one computer who cares.
