Sorry. I assumed that by using the word "active" he meant a paying EA account.

Oh, I also assumed you saying "it's crazy, but I do", meant it was crazy because you bitch so much so it would be crazy for you to still pay/play the game. But aren't the free servers a different ruleset? So you could play UO using a ruleset from 8-10 years ago right? A ruleset that was pre-bullsh!t?

I'm confused. (hard to believe isn't it?)

So many assumptions; always so many assumptions here on mmorpg.

Who said anything about a free shard?

I have a lifetime complimentary EA account.

But, UO is so lousy now, I don't even play it for free - the game just flat out sucks.

    It's a real shame.

UO went from being one of the greatest MMOG virtual worlds ever designed into just another garbage fantasy MMOG for kids.

Well I am glad I have gone back, the graphics are not very good but that will change soon, but the gameplay is still among the best.

I left the game during the introduction of the 3D client and just resuscribed last week because of lack of any decent alternative and the prospect of the new gfx update.

The game is still lots of fun. There is plenty of housing room on any shard, already found 2 tower spots without really looking. You are not limited anymore to predefined house templates, but can build the custom house you always wanted:

    http://uo.stratics.com/content/aos/customhouse.shtml

Of course the game has been "itemized" with the introduction of many magic item properties: http://uo.stratics.com/content/arms-armor/itemproperties.php

But I spent 10k (which takes you like 5 minutes to get) on leather armor and now my mage can cast without any reg requirements. A new decent quest system has been introduced and I did the "bag of sending" quest just this weekend solo without much troubles.

Unless you are heavy into PvP where items do matter quite alot, you can play the game just like you did >5 years ago. Just ignore the neon, ninja, artifact and elf crap and nothing will prevent you from having the same fun you had years ago ;).

There is so much new content to explore that (now that I am playing more casually than before) I will never see the end of it.

I do not really understand why so many people are turned off by the game now; probably the disappointment that the game did not quite evolve like they expected. If you never played the game before, then I would perhaps not recommend it. But as a former player, the new content coupled with the nostalgia is IHMO unbeatable. I would turn to one of the heavier populated production shards though, or perhaps Siege.

PVP is tough but the UBER loot doesnt unbalance it too much.  Your skills and tactics can still make a difference.

Nope, I'm right.  In fact, in your own reply you go on to mention that uber gear is a part of UO now and then you give the excuse that so what everyone else is doing it in other MMOGs.

The uber loot completely imbalances the gameplay and destroys the integrity of the game.  Just keep playing a few more months and you'll see.  Or even better, develop your character until you have a great template with great gear and then try to play through the next expansion - all your time building your gear and character will go down the drain in favor of EA's business model of encouraging players to buy their next crappy expansion by dangling more uber gear carrots and skills in front of their playerbase.

    Funny post, GungaDin.

Ok , been back for over 2 months now and i'm still loving it.  The high end gear is not that difficult to obtain and every character i've developed has no issues with any of the new lands.  Infact, all the new content has just increased each profession's potential and viablitiy.  I have zero clue what your talking about half the time.  I too played in 1998 and hated the changes, but when you compare UO now to other MMORPGS of today, I still think it reigns supreme its character development (skill based) and openess of the world.  Thats why i returned after all these years.  There wont be another old school UO game made.  It sucks, but its true. So you have to play in the environment that you enjoy/enjoyed the most.  For me it was UO and thats why I play it again.
