I hope the mmorpg industry doesn't make it the 3rd :( It's such a shame because in 2003 and 2004 there were soo many fantastic titles coming out or being developed at the time and it looked sooo much better than it does now! However since the release of many of these games they've been ruined or totally lost their playerbase....

EQ2 - Playerbase is tiny, the EU servers are virtually empty.

DAOC - TOA expansion

PS - Core Combat expansion

Horizons - Dodgey dev teams

SWG - JTLS,ROTW,TOOW which were all crap + the patches ruining the game and the adding of Jedi then the fact there was a CU and NGE lol. Lucas don't know how to treat their fans tbh :P First 3 shit movies and now this : "noooooooooooooooooo" - Darth wanker who cant act.

MxO - lol........................

RFOnline = Archlord - Korean crap tbh...

DnL - Why did people think it would be good?

DDO - Turbine screwed this one up

Vanguard - Just a unpolished buggy peice of unispired crap : They say the game has freedom but tbh it's just like anyother mmorpg with a bigger world and less content + just looks horrible and all the rest

LOTRO - Another Turbine flop, i don't understand how you can get 2 of the biggest fantasy genres and make them into 2 crap mmorpgs.

etc etc.

So lets not carry on the trend please :) I don't want to be saying in a year how WAR and AOC sucked.

Lord of the Rings Online is a great game

lotro has little to do with lotr.

it's a cookie cutter mmo just trying to make some cash off the name and using the WoW style.

this is the only game i've been looking forward to because I thought maybe they'd make something as awesome as asherons call, but no such luck.

Perhaps you need to actually go out and socialize in the REAL world as opposed to a virtual one.  Ya know like take in a movie or go clubbing with friends or a concert.

You seem to be a bit obsessed and jaded with MMO's at the moment.

    So true mate. So true

I also hope AOC and WAR will break this horrible trend. But ..we can only hope.

As for LOTRO. The rest of games are so craptastic , that even a mediocre game like LOTRO actually stands out as good game

    Did the original UO suck?
    Did the original EQ suck?

Sure the graphics and game engines are "dated now", but were'nt they fun?
They were by todays standards... "hard core"

The players made them change. The complaints about rules and consequences, looting and PvP had developers dumbing down these games in order to please a more general audience. So now we have a market full of "casual" games that don't seem fun to a large group of players. Also some that currently are playing are finding themselves bored after a while.

Maybe it's EndGame? Or it could be a general lack of challenge in the game. Either way they are bored and want "more" (however you define "more" to be)

Now we are seeing a couple PvP titles coming in the near future, AoC and Warhammer. You ask will these two titles be any different? I'd have to say PvP will obviously add to the challenge and variety in the game. Will that be enough, or won't that become old and stale as well? I think these games will, but in a couple years also end up with a tired playerbase. More of the same....

Nope I think the original models of UO and EQ should be revisited. Darkfall may be one game that is going to do just that (the UO model).

The difference for me between the old and new is how these games have evolved. The games have become more trivial over time. Players have no real sence of accomplishments, as everything is "expected" and nothing truely earned.

Trivial as I define it: "The more a game does for you, the more trivial it is"

This is a broad and general definition of how even the tiniest details are not appreciated, and yet this can also be carried to extremes making a game unfun and tedious. Compromises between gameplay mechanics and graphics as both affect performance. More and more, the focus has been on the graphics, and less on gameplay. More on gameplay convenience, and less on real detail in activity. Make it easy to have fun or fun = easy, seems to be the general philosophy for developers. Additionally the content itself (quest progression) is designed more to occupy the player and lead him through content by hopefully fun tasks with rewards. Rather than allow the player freedom of choice in what his activity will be (solo content), The developers attempt to control you through a simulated freedom of breadcrumbs and brass rings. This "formula" is trivial, the developers are "doing it for you".

Unfortunately, easy has become trivial, and trivial becomes boring.
Removing the challenge in games has made the games pointless, and unfun.

I can describe the challenge of the original UO, in everyday activitys, in basic taken for granted stuff we do in these worlds when we play. I can also describe how they have changed over time, and why these changes mattered or how they made the game less fun.

To sum up, I don't see much changing unless players themselves make their desires known to developers. I won't play a trivial game anymore, I'd rather starve or play an old and meaningful game. I may yet be suckered into another box sale, but not a subscription, but I'l look real hard before I buy.

The only game I'm seriously considering right now is Darkfall, and that only because it is skills based (UO format), Full loot, FFA pvp, with more reality in gameplay than I see in other games. (more of a world than a game)

No more Trivial MMO's, let's get serious "again". Make a world, not a game
    What I listen to :)

My suggestion is Sword of the New World.  It should be entering US/EU beta soon.  I have been playing in its Singapore Closed Beta rescently, and I just have to say its the most fun I have had in an mmo in 3 years.  Its gameplay is very refreshing.

I agree 100% with the OP.

atm all you can do is play Guild Wars for excellent PvP,  WoW to get your raid on, and Eve for your community/politics.

The problem with giving players freedom is that a small percent ruin the game for everyone.

For our project we are creating an amazing crime and punishment system that will put a lot of the populous control into the players hands.

Much wealth can be made by being honorable.

But again much wealth can be made in being bad. But what we have managed to do is create a system of rewarding a good type of bad, not the kind where a player spams the town and lets everyone know his vocabulary is at a second grade level.

I think atm that the only game that is going to keep you happy is UO on a player run shard, or a good FPS to alleviate your frustration with the MMO genre.

    Good news is coming soon!

This game will fail, and I know this sounds retarded, but this game will fail in America due to the name.... They should have kepted it as it was or came up with a shorter name or even something besides 'Sword of the New World' (WTF)...

Americans believe in the KISS(Keep It Simple Stupid) method and the cool factor, even with our video game names. We do not want to play a game thats name is almost a freaking sentence or that sounds freaking retarded. People will take one look at the name and say to themself's, thats a stupid name, and pass it by.

Picture some kids outside saying "Hey dude, we gotta get going our guild in WOW is about to start that instance run". Now picture the same guys with 'Sword of the New World' as their game.  "Hey dude, we gotta get going our guild in SOTNW (WTF?!?) is about to start that instance run".....

Oh btw I agree with the OP this is borderline disgusting with what the MMORPG developers of the world have put out there for us. And once you look past AOC, Huxley, and WAR it looks like we are up for another 2 years of total crap, WEEEE!!!!....

As for great game sthat are out, vanguard is very fun right now, not sure where the op is getting the crappy gfx from, perhaps a dodgy pc or lack of tuning skills, in any case if you want a game that is fun , finished, and has content coming out the wazoo, try ffxi(if you have a considerable amount of time to play that is, unless you don't mind slow progress).

That is without question the most ludicrous statement on why a game would fail I've read in a long time!

Dude how can you say SWG Pre CU was crap?

JTL was such an awesome expansion.  The others, i couldve done without.

A good name goes a long way for alot of people, try this test if you don't believe me.

Say the name Bathtilda to yourself 3 times, now close your eyes and see what image comes to mind. Now say the name Angelica 3 times, close your eyes and see what comes to mind.

Im willing to bet (provided you people don't lie like usual) that 7 times out of 10 Bathtilda made your produce a very ugly woman, while the name Angelica probably was a more favorable looking female.

I agree with tinybina.  The name is a huge turn off.  I think they lengthened the name more to "Sword of the New World: Granado Espada"

However, it really doesn't stop the game from being monumental.  I mean there really is no mmo that compares.

Your point is flawed my friend...

Those names you just mentioned have already been established.  They have survived the test of time and are all well made products.

Your same argument can be said about all the Brand names you listed.  Don't you think people said the same thing about how stupid the name Bentley was for a car at it's conception?

If the product is good and unique people will buy it.

And I've known an Angelica and she was butt ugly!

Keep thinking that names do not mean a thing.  And have fun playing SOTNW:GE whenever it comes out, you will probably be one of the few that will be actually playing it.

  • tinybina sadly enough you are a fool.  you know what people will prob end up calling it for short "sword" now thats pretty fing simple if you ask me. plus the name angelica to anyone that was 15 or under some time in the nineties would recall a girl from the show rugrats who was a dizty ugly nasty 4 year old.  now say what you want about names but something like sword of the new world at least can spark some imagination in someone and isnt that what games are really about. i know nothing about the game but you need to step away from the computer and find something else to bitch about.  besides eq tends to do okay when if you took into effect all their expansions the name would be something like eq:ythekljasdf n,cmhkcjayidu and then some.  so really dont just go bashing things because you think you should be heard and that you have the skills to be a professional marketing agent for a worldwide product unless that it your job in which case you should be fired.

I was going to post on the original topic but this thread went all weird.

Here's my thinking on the name issue:  If 'Sword of the New World' is so long a name that it flusters and confuses enough people to matter then I think we might as well kiss online gaming goodbye because civilization will be falling soon.  So I guess it's back to the caveman days for us.

I don't think I will mind too much except that I might get a little starved for conversation haning out with all the troglodytes who can only handle one or two words at a time.

    "Me hungry"

    "Got women"

    Me: "Got mammoth"

    "Mammoth good"

Me: "I'll trade you some mammoth for your women", <puzzled, incomprehending stares."

    Me: /sigh

Your write the above um paragraph, yet im the "fool"...

And to the poster above me I never once said it would 'confuse' anyone I basicly said the name was a turnoff. It sounds like a freaking Sci-Fi book not a freaking video game.

It don't matter this game will do about as well as RF:Online anyways.

And for you people who still think that names don't matter.  Feel free to name your first child Lucifer,  Zues, Claud, Hercules, or some equally silly name.  You know since names don't matter and all.

Some might say that you're just overly critical, demanding and negative.

Others might say "CRY HARDER NUB"

Others yet might say "Well I'm enjoying [insert one of those games here] quite a bit."

    ------
Played - UO, FFXI, WAR, WoW, EVE
    Currently - Bored.

Yeah names don't matter much, I mean if you are superficial enough to judge books by the cover, you may as well stick to pictures, because you obviously can't read...

No more Trivial MMO's, let's get serious "again". Make a world, not a game

I really have to disagree with you here.  EQ2 at first was hardcore.  It failed miserably.  Vanguard is trying to be hardcore...its failing.

DAOC is well past its prime, as well as Horizons.  I wont talk about Planetside or SWG (its an SoE product enough said). MxO and DnD was a disaster from the get go.

Many of the games that the OP listed had one thing in common.  Alot of companies jumpin in to make that big WoW buck.

I think WoW is an okay game with great polish.  Many of the games that the OP listed suxed, were buggy, and lacked polish.

When game developers decide to treat their customers with respect and deliver games as promised the masses will come.  Wether the game is Hardcore or not.
