I have to agree with the thread, it shouldn't be about gear at all. I have played EQ since release and thats all the game is focused on. It's the entire focus of the game, its the only reason to play it, better gear, if I do this I will get better gear.
Everquest characters have no difference at all other then their gear, a ranger is a ranger is a ranger. And dont even try to tell me starting stats make a bit of difference. They dont, they can be fixed with gear. Skills are the same for every single person of that class, you can max every skill availible to you and its completely up to your gear on how well you perform in action. Warriors can cast a very robust line of spells with click items and now gear can even make a game that was designed for group play to make full soloability by the lowliest and most solo unfriendly classes in the game.
The bazaar is a perfect example of what everquest is about. Its a massive shopping fix. Why do you raid, for the uber loot. Why do you spend half your week sleepless and jacked up on caffeine? To get the uber loot.
Those that are the most successful in everquest are those that have the most time to do the best camps which goes hand in hand with the longest camps and waste an entire day organizing an executing a raid. But dont worry, if you dont have enough time to spend getting the best loot someone else will sell you the best loot for a nominal fee in US Dollars. Atleast til you find something better you want when the next expansion comes out 3 months after the last.

Having played pretty much every MMO out there for at least a little while, I still think I prefer EQ overall, in a way. Yeah, ever since they released SoL it's gone downhill, but it's also improved in a lot of ways as well. Some people call it dumbing down, but I think the changes they made for the newbies are pretty cool, like the armor quests, etc. And most of the other games out there have done pretty much the same thing, or have recently added stuff like that, as SWG just did.
No other game has the feel that EQ does. While some games have better graphics, or NPC AI, or physics, all those games worlds feel hollow and empty, and just look... bland. Like SWG, great graphics, but the worlds are just shells, I can travel from one end of a planet to another, and concievably not see a single thing. In EQ, while the zones may not be as big, all the content is hand crafted, and has a certain... feel to it. I can't describe it, but it's there. I remember when I first played, running my Dark Elf from Neriak to Permafrost, or whatever the newb area outside of Halas is. I looked up the route on EQAtlas to see how to get there more or less, and there were these descriptions of horrible Giants and Griffins everywhere, and running, invisible, through the zones, I was literally shaking, palms sweating, from the tension, and excitement, that at any second my invisibility would drop, and I would be left a smear on the road to Qeynos. And there was also the 'oooh factor' when I reached the bridge from East Karana to North Karana. When I finally reached my destination, I was amazed. I actually almost felt cold from the driving snow, and howling winds. And that is what sucked me in to EQ, and that feeling of atmosphere, and personality is something I've never found yet in any of the other MMOs I've played. AO comes close, but just has a bit too much empty space, I think. And yeah, since SoL, EQ has started to lose some of that magic, a little at a time, but it's a different design team, and the games what, 6 years old now.
It will be interesting to see if the folks at Sigil, who are comprised of most of the original EQ team, can reproduce that feeling in Vanguard. So far, the only MMO coming out that looks like it might succeed is WoW. At the end of the day all the games out there are what you make of them, if you want to roleplay, go out and find it, there are others out there, they just tend to keep a low profile. Not that I believe you can really roleplay in an MMOG, outside of a very limited context, due to the restrictive nature of the system involved, but regardless, it's not the job of the devs to lead you to it by the nose. You only get out what you put in, just like a pen and paper game with some friends.
Well you know listening to peoples posts on here....you knwo whats to say that EQ2 will not be the same as EQ with the whole best gear availible scenario.......

so please if your gonna complain about a game just don't play it...i mean i am sure no oen here really cares why you quit playing......I mean unless someone made a topic asking hey why did people quit playing EQ......
