If there are mass posters saying "VANGUARD IS BAD" its a good idea to take the benefit of the doubt, and wait to trial it.
Cute 41 hours already this week? Zomgz. Which level is your character?
I just cancelled my subscription after 12 RL days, almost 5 days /played, about 130 headaches due to bugs and lag on my high-end system, tedious crafting and a population of generally nice people who are deluded into thinking that anything that takes a long time makes a game fun.
The crafting, while good in concept, becomes a HUGE grind as early as crafting level 5-6. The process, which seems like fun when you're doing the tutorial, becomes SO slow and tedious when even the most basic craft takes a number of steps, which after the first couple times you do it are thoughtless clicks. Complications aren't interesting, either.
The adventuring at low levels (1-15?) is decent, with plenty of solo quests and group quests. You can get a few quests, go do them, find a group while you're there, complete them, and level. This is very deceiving - it is just enough to have lowbies RAVING about the game before they know what they're actually getting into.
As you get into the late teens and especially early 20s, you become forced to basically find a group and GRIND to level. There are missives and a few quests to speed things up, but the general consensus is that a solid group grinding 3-4* mobs is the best (and only) way to go. Even w/ a perfect party, you can grind all night and the progress is SO slow.
I have to post this to save people from the vanboys. I bought this game because so many people were raving about it ... MMOs have evolved away from the EQ1 days for a good reason. If you REALLY miss EQ1 - with the grind and the more grind and the even more grind - then this game is for you. If you don't want to grind for the next year just to experience this not-very-unique game's non-existant end-game, dont buy this game.
That is all.
Thanks for your honest look at VG, it's all true.
I found the game becoming tedious at over lvl 10 personally. It's bad because the game gives a false impression at the start, where you can solo at the beginning up to 10-15ish. You're right about the copious amounts of boring grinding. I truly thought VG would be a little more imaginative in the quest department too because right now its the same old bloody kill x number of creatures all day. The death system too harsh and also more complicated then it should be. "Third Generation MMORPG"? Honestly, hell no, not right now at the very least until they work on some pretty big changes.
Whats wrong with people like you??? Do you honestly expect a heroic epic quest at level 10!?!??!?!!?!?!? ((((DO YOU?!?!))))) Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh!!! Quests designed from levels 1-8 are called NEWB QUESTS..Its basic purpose is to get people used to in game mechanics, the lay of the land, and help u get better accustomed to your surroundings..If you don't understand this, then we don't want you in the game period..I hate people like you who would shout and yell in OOC begging over and over for ppl to tell you where such and such place is,etc..It's annoying.I want these kids and simple minded rejects out of the game as quickly as possible..The same people who don't know how to play their class, doesn't listen to instructions while in group, causes the party to wipe because they are buttmon mashing idiots, etc are all people who SHOULD NOT BUY THIS GAME.Please stick to WoW,CS,or any other game that doesn't require you to think much,,PLEASE..
Just for the record, there are some amazing rare, heroic, and legendary quests once you get in the early to mid 20's..This is where VG really takes off and you'll notice how amazing the quests start to become..You'll get drawn into the storyline, the lore behind each quest, and finally the nice reward upon completing the quest..
YOU DO NOT RECIEVE THESE QUESTS AT LEVEL 8!!!!!!!!! 90% OF MOST QUESTS FROM 1-10 ARE GO TO X SPOT,KILL Y AMOUNT OF MONSTERS,ETC.. BECAUSE SIGIL WANTS PEOPLE TO EXPLORE THE WONDERFUL WORLD THEY CREATED SO YOU WILL GET A BETTER FEELING ON YOUR SURROUNDINGS....THIS WORLD IS HUGE..
And for the record, soloing is possible from 1-50,but wheres the fun in that?If you want to solo all the time and not meet people, then why are u playing a MMORPG?? The only MMO that is very solo friends is WoW..And look at the playerbase VG is attracting..
Ex WoW peons who want the game dumbed down for them!!!!
So If you are a WoW peon, have A.D.D,an IQ of like 25,prefer a fast paced leveling experience,THEN DO NOT BUY THIS GAME,,PLEEEASE!

Cute 41 hours already this week? Zomgz. Which level is your character?
15 bard, 10 blacksmith and 53 diplomat. I play on Varking also... so PvP here and there
I don't burn the adv lvls too fast, because i know content will get better and the itemization is not completly where they want it to be. I also make sure i do all teh quests around the area i am ATM
It's not wow It's about the journey not the end game. I agree with you on te whole crafting thing. The whole compication thing pees me off. I just can't be bothered with crafting. I'm a diplomacy man and enjoying that. If all you think about is getting to the next lvl you will want to leave. There are so many places to go and see. Go out and explore. Just try to stop thinking about lvling up all the time.
People's playstyles are different. =P
Personally I actually don't care about levelling max level a.s.a.p. It's the content I'm more worried about the, quests, which are so boring at the moment. There is virtually zero imagination in them. You'd think for a "third generation mmorpg" they'd improve on such an important aspect wouldn't they?
I agree, quests aren't quests. I see them as task or "hey, check this place, that is where you are gonna hunt for a while" kinda thing.
ToD is a prime example. It starts with stuff outside, then a bit more close, and so on... You basically finish inside fighting the boss.
Once again,ToD quests are for people levels 17-19ish..If you read the lore on Dailuk,Xarkrafi, etc then the quest becomes that much more interesting..If you just get the quest and look at the main objective, and the reward u'll recieve at the bottom, complete it,then ya perhaps the quest isn't fun..But remember, its level 18,not level 50 epic quest.. When will u people realize this?
YOU DON'T START THE GAME AS A LEGENDARY POWERFUL CHARACTER!!! You start off as a little nothing working his way u to a legendary figure..U don't reach legendary status at level 10-17-24-etc..If you did, then this game would get boring in a week.,,,just liek WoW did!

Amen! Same here..My main is a level 17 rogue also on varking..But I recently just created a shaman,he's almost 15..I also play on Varking,as part of the good team hehe.. And your absolutely right.I don't wanna advance through the game so fast either since alot of the levels 30+ content isnt really in the game yet..I mean there is enough content that will get you to 40 easily, but its just like how the original eq was at launch,,just a few areas and thats it..So I'm also taking my time and enjoying everything I'm doing..

I can't believe you're actually defending VG quest blandness. "Most quests 1-10 are go to x spot, kill y amount of creatures cause they want to us to better explore the world"? Please. That's a terrible excuse no offense there are plenty of ways for them to make us explore the game world without the tried KIll X number of creatures mold. That's the dev's job. To use their imaginations. First impressions count too. Make it bland at the beginning and you'll drive people away naturally. Why do we have to wait to 20 to actually get excited with the game? It should start being exciting the minute we start playing the game.

Originally posted by slapme7times why would anyone who actually enjoyed playing vanguard, exit the game to come to these forums to talk it up, unless they were bored of it? can someone explain this? if you have played vanguard you are either 1- enjoying a brand new game 2- pissed and hating it, and thus complaining on forums. so what the hell are people who say they like the game doing on forums, unless they are bored of the game? please explain?
Some of us have to work for a living and many like me have a family, so we aren't playing 24/7 like some. When I get home from work I like to browse the forums here before I jump in the game. It's entertaining to see all these "Vanguard sucks" post and it gets even better when someone like you post something as stupid as you did.
Let me ask you.. Why do people still play WoW, when you can make level 60 in 3 months playing casually like I did? And when you get to level 60 there isn't anything left to do. If you crafted during this time, you maxed that out in just a few weeks. WoW was a huge let down for me, but millions of people still play it. Lots of WoW players spend time posting in the WoW forums, so are you wasting time posting in the WoW forums asking them the same thing?
If you don't like the game, by all means come here and post the problems your having or post what you think is missing from the game. Just keep the "Vanguard sucks", "Don't buy this game" and any other crap out of your post. I don't enjoy playing WoW, but I'm not here telling everyone "Not to buy it".
Dang Jord you have just given me a brain storm. I will make a mmo that you can play where everyone starts out at lvl 200 with all the same gear , money, mounts. A great idea!!! Now while you and people like you are playing i will play Vanguard. Some people like to feel the joy from an accomplishment and some people need to have everything done for them. I am having a blast in Vanguard. BTW my main is 17 and Ive soloed all the way cause i like to run around and explore. Different strokes for different folks.

REALLY.

I too tried Vanguard and found it (apart from the bugs and the beta-esque feeling of it) to be basically a nostalgia-based backlash type of game for gamers who think that it's all been downhill for MMOs since EQ1. It's designed to be long and tedious for people who think long and tedious is what makes a game great, and that games that are not designed that way are "easy", "dumbed down", "designed so a 5 year old can play them", etc. In other words, Vanguard was designed to appeal to more elitist types who think that the EQ1 paradigm is superior, and that gamers who like and succeed with that paradigm are the true cream of the crop, the true "elite" of gamers. In short, it's an elitist backlash game.

Nah I dont think anything went over my head. You dont like the game thats your right but i do. I look at the game different than you do .
"I will make a mmo that you can play where everyone starts out at lvl 200 with all the same gear , money, mounts. A great idea!!!"
Where did I say that I wanted a game that resembled that in any way?
I want challenge. I want an epic journey from the bottom to the top. I want a dozen different, fun avenues for character development. NOTHING I posted aligns with ANY of your reply.
So... like I said before ... my posts went RIGHT over your head.
------ Played - UO, FFXI, WAR, WoW, EVE Currently - Bored.
Most mmorpgs have the same grind as vanguard... Some like WoW dont, but even then they usually substitute the level grind with item grind at the 'end game'. I definitely prefer a slower leveling process as opposed to sitting around waiting in 60 man raids for 4 hours at a time for a 1% chance of getting the item I want in WoW... But we cant expect WoW to have a harder grind to max level because it is more aimed at casual gamers who feel like hitting level 60 makes their characters just as good as other level 60s... Little do they know or care that their lack of uber equiptment makes them much weaker than those who have completed the real WoW grind, for items, and really I think that works out well. Grinding for items means you cant really be directly compared to another players, as usually they cant even see your items, and even if they could, items have different attributes ect that keep you from being able to compare them directly. Levels on the other hand directly show character 'superiority', and I think a lot of casual gamers definitely feel intimidated by that. Well, I'm not really trying to be mean, because I feel sorta intimidated by it too ...
Its pointless to argue with them Jord. They post replies stating how they despise posters with negative complaints, then use those very same tactics and bash the complainers. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. You can't win, they could care less about your point of view and they will certainly never respect anyone's opinion but their own. I find it amusing that they even bash game critics, who are paid professionals, for giving reviews that don't match their specific criteria. Whether an argument meets your specific criteria or not, allow it for what it is. An opinon that some might appreciate and take to heart or one they can completely ignore. The fact of the matter is that people should allow discussion, positive or negative, without becoming rabid beasts whose only purpose is to badger and demean other posters.
Vanguard is not my kind of game and I certaintly think its fine for people to post their opinions so that others who are thinking about buying the game, can have a better idea on what they're getting into. In a market that doesn't let people try it before buying, at least not till the game is over a year old, its kind of nice to get different opinions on something and decide for yourself which you want to believe or agree with. When you can take in information from professional gaming sites and add that to the information supplied by the average joe who has played the game, you can get a pretty clear picture of what the game is really about, something that is absolutely not determinable from the game box or the game's own web site.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
I think I know exactly what Jorg is talking about, with the power of current home computers why are they wasting so much of it to improve the "eye candy", where are the complex algorithms that allow for truly random npc interaction and an ever changing game world, where are the quests filled with traps, tricks, riddles, and puzzles. I have also been lefting wondering why we still can have no real impact on the game worlds we play in, and why do so many firmly believe that time spent = challenge.. I thought challenge was brought about that the chance that you may actually fail, being able to repeatedly try the same quest until you succeed does not equal a challenge it equals a grind .
I apologize if I am not as clear on my thoughts on the current directions of not just this mmo but what seems to be all of them I am on hour 36 without sleep and starting to feel it a llittle .
Because my experience so far has been vvery much like the OP's.
1-10, not very exciting, but not too bad. Lots of kill-a-rat quests.
10-15 better at first, quite a few solo and small group kill-a-rat quests from 10-13 or so. But at around 14-15 it starts getting to be nothing but a grind. Very hard to find groups, travel times to a group if you find one are a total pain, and very little solo content unless you want to pound on mobs all day long at 1/6th of 1% of a level per mob.

http://vgplayers.station.sony.com/characters.vm?characterId=51539654162 In response to the post about the lvl 45. Just take 5 seconds and look at that man's blog. He is obviously exploiting just like every other lvl 40+ out there! He got from lvl 23 to 45 in the same day and in fact the same FREAKING PLACE. Picture is in the same exact place. So yes there are high lvls already, but they are doing it by cheating and I can't wait for them to get reset or banned. So in the future, plz post all high lvls and I bet they are exploting.
I was in a group today for about 2 hours just killing mobs around a achatlan. We even bagged a few namers. I enjoyed the "grind" as you put it. Maybe the game is not your cup of tea, but for me and the 5 others, we had a blast. Oh, wait I guess I'm just making myself think that, as you've put it in many of your other posts... oh silly me.
It seems funny to me that some people seem to liked this grind, but didn't like something artistically superior like lineage 2's grind ?
What gives, Lineage 2 has Castle sieges , crafting , PVP with a solid pvp system, lots of areas , Raid boss ect, But that doesn't appeal to people. Just flat out grinding does ? It baffles me how , how can i word this with out being to harsh , stuck up , some of you sound about games.
From everything i read this is the Vanguard gamer:
That is what I've gathered out of these last few days, and this is not a troll, read thru it all and tally it up. The next thing I want to say would be a rtoll so I will reframe from writing it.
lol, i so agree, it willl be funny when these so called rich guys whit there big alien ware each have a continent to themselves screaming THIS IS THE BEST GAME!
the object of war is not to die for your country, its to make some other bastard die for his. G.Paton
Its strange that people can be given a veritable cornucopia of options in a game and yet somehow manage to find the most mundane aspects of that game and do them repetitively all the while complaining about the "grind" as if it was somehow imposed upon them to play the game in that fashion by some entity that forbids them from enjoying all of the content that exists outside of those particular actions.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.

I don't burn the adv lvls too fast, because i know content will get better and the itemization is not completly where they want it to be. I also make sure i do all teh quests around the area i am ATM

I see them as task or "hey, check this place, that is where you are gonna hunt for a while" kinda thing.ToD is a prime example.

I find it sad that you played 5 days playing time in 12 days :O
don't you have a job?

I'm in my last year of undergrad and it's reading week ... so I had the time. The day I got it I played 15 hours which is a bit nuts ... yes.

You can have mine.

I have 8800's in sli

Your poor
You are the problem not the bugs
I got banned for buying gold(cause im rich)

Its strange that people can be given a veritable cornucopia of options in a game and yet somehow manage to find the most mundane aspects of that game and do them repetitively all the while complaining about the "grind" as if it was somehow imposed upon them to play the game in that fashion by some entity that forbids them from enjoying all of the content that exists outside of those particular actions.
