The "grind" or whatever you like to call it, is not what's killing the game for me. But the "RE-Grind" does. Due to bugs, crashes, corpse runs etc. which leads to that I get killed over and over again, and gain more and more xp debt, when it's actually not even my own fault - is making me wanna quit. Regrinding lost xp is a killer! You just can't implement corpse runs and xp debt at a stage where the game is infested with bugs and crashes!! I'm not an overall hater. This is my one and only issue with the game, and I hate to say that I'm not sure if I can take anymore of this.......
My question is why make a casual player wait 6 months to experience some high end content that the power gamers got to in 2 months?
The same reason someone who practices the piano for 4 hours a day will become better faster than someone who practices an hour twice a week (unless the second party were a prodigy or something). What makes casual gamers think they're so special that they should recieve equal reward for lesser time spent "practicing?" Even if that powergamer solo'd his/her way to that high end contennt, he/she would still get there before someone who just didnt have the time to spend. Having a busier real-life than someone else doesn't qualify you for special treatment.
I'm sorry if you, or anyone else, just dont have the time to play as much as you'd like, but that's not the game or the developers' fault. Why make a casual player wait? They dont make you wait, your schedule makes you wait.
Look at all the top MMOs, they all have a "grind" with rare exception is some of the more esoteric, low subscription games. That is fine for them, and if you like that good for you. But the fact is most successful MMOs wil, and will always have some form of leveling, and that requires you do something for it, which is always refered to as grinding by someone.

I remember this happening in WoW. There has never been any xp penalty in WoW so how could that ever have happened?
And no, WoW has not been in such a bad state play-wise.
So the OP is saying that this game has a harder levelling curve than most MMO's out there? Good. About time we got some challenge. In fact, the game that was most rewarding for me was Lineage 2 in its early stages. So Vanguard isnt that harsh at all, Actualy they dumped down the penalties and exp needed to gain levels. Some people like Britney Spears, some people like Bethoven. What ever you feel gives meaning to your life, go for it. Not that id recommend Spears. Cheers though
so beating mobs over and over again endlessly is fun? and how is that a challenge? more like a time sink. sorry but for me playing wack a mole for hrs a day to lvl is no fun or a challenge accept maybe to your social life

I'd speculate that part of the reason LOTRO is offering it's "innovative" pay in advance for large chunks of time deals is because alot of people will love the game for a week or two, be concerned by 2-3 and finished by a month. I'm sure it will do very well in the like to solo a few hours a week demographic, if you can find enough to do there for any period of time without becoming bored rigid, good luck to you.
Thanks for making a thread with such a clear agenda, but I know I and many others are quite comfortable with enjoying a game we won't have done every zone in a few weeks time.
Horses for courses, there's nothing wrong with liking what you like, however trying to rationalise your personal preferences as the only sane choice is rather egotistical though. All the best.
I have no agenda. I only got into the LOTRO beta yesterday ... but it's a more polished, better looking product.
VG sucks. It's a disgrace to the software industry to release something that far from it's "ready" point. I wish I could have my $60 back.
I've been in LOTRO beta for months, lots of people will be very impressed with how stable and bug free it is, many will like the asian style square blur filter applied to the whole screen (I personally don't - but that's a preference). However once the first few days/weeks wear off you will find out nothing is a challenge or remotely stretches you, and there's almost no payoff to doing anything, you'll never feel any sense of peril at being lead through the tiny world, and in concert very little sense of achievement or excitement.
No matter what gear you aquire you'll be exactly the same as any other of your class and the most profound customisation you can apply to your character is hair colour/style basically, there's no choices to be made that impinges on the mechanics of playing it anyway. I took all my gear off and played with nothing but my weapon for a level in the 30's, it made no real difference, it certainly didn't manage to make anything exciting for me.
LOTRO is an experience much akin to switching off and watching TV, it just floats over you requiring very little thought on your part. That's exactly what some people are looking for, and there's nothing wrong with that per se, but for the type of gamer I am and others of my guild are, if the question is Vanguard with bugs & paying to play and the free LOTRO beta slots - there's no question, we're in VanGuard. If I want to switch off I'll watch TV if I want to feel immersed I'll play VG, bugs & all.

And no, WoW has not been in such a bad state play-wise. Everyone seems to forget queueing for hours to get into the server then crashing to queue again or getting rolled back, just nod and say yes WoW was perfect at release, all the international guilds loved having to lie & create new credit cards etc to get non-US members playing and so on on, it was all perfect back then, not a fault to be seen.

Yes named mobs should require 6 man groups. No, killing npcs of same level in a 1 on 1 situation should not require a group nor take 3 minutes to solo. Do you understand now?
I like grouping for names raids and pvp.. Random grinding on npcs and quests should be 95% solo content period.
Now again, I ask you, where are these casual friendly games you spoke of that are apparently flooding the market? Again, fantasy themed, and real models with a current game engine.... Thats right, there isn't one.

yes, you will love the "challenge" when you die 4-5 times from bugs and crashes and have your xp bar at 80% red.
This is why Warhammer is going to be great, all u need is to be in the zone helping out the quest and u get the credit no need to be in a grp. Vanguard needs to start some new concept instead of just copy shlt from everyone and end up making just another typical mmorpg.

Because WoW underestimated the sheer number of players that wanted to play. The game itself was extremely stable for a launch day mmorpg. The servers being massively overloaded does not equal a buggy game.
Vanguard has the opposite problem--buggy game and underwhelming population.
I just cancelled my subscription after 12 RL days, almost 5 days /played, about 130 headaches due to bugs and lag on my high-end system, tedious crafting and a population of generally nice people who are deluded into thinking that anything that takes a long time makes a game fun.
The crafting, while good in concept, becomes a HUGE grind as early as crafting level 5-6. The process, which seems like fun when you're doing the tutorial, becomes SO slow and tedious when even the most basic craft takes a number of steps, which after the first couple times you do it are thoughtless clicks. Complications aren't interesting, either.
The adventuring at low levels (1-15?) is decent, with plenty of solo quests and group quests. You can get a few quests, go do them, find a group while you're there, complete them, and level. This is very deceiving - it is just enough to have lowbies RAVING about the game before they know what they're actually getting into.
As you get into the late teens and especially early 20s, you become forced to basically find a group and GRIND to level. There are missives and a few quests to speed things up, but the general consensus is that a solid group grinding 3-4* mobs is the best (and only) way to go. Even w/ a perfect party, you can grind all night and the progress is SO slow.
I have to post this to save people from the vanboys. I bought this game because so many people were raving about it ... MMOs have evolved away from the EQ1 days for a good reason. If you REALLY miss EQ1 - with the grind and the more grind and the even more grind - then this game is for you. If you don't want to grind for the next year just to experience this not-very-unique game's non-existant end-game, dont buy this game.
That is all.
yo jord, bet you remember who good ol zanon is, btw kharma trolls is dead let it rest in peace, plz change the sig, the memories are bad,

Thank you for your post and your opinion of Vanguard. I have yet to play it, and your post has made it ultra clear to me that I should, without a doubt, buy Vanguard and an extra GB of ram to play it as well. My reasoning: If inpatient, non thinking players like you hate it and leave the game, then the better this game will be. I don't want a million WOW lovers invading what seems to be a great game. If you can't stand an actual penalty for running into a far superior mob and dying, then for crying out loud, go back to WOW. If all you want to do is fight mobs 20 hours a day trying to level up as fast as possible and feel disappointed that you cannot level as fast as WOW, and therefore WOW is better... then by all means, go play WOW.
I'm sorry for all you newb mmo players that think WOW is a real mmo and the old UO, EQ1, and AC are crap that wasted your money on a desperately needed real mmo.
Just like the real world, my philosophy is that there should be real penalties for stupid decisions in an mmo. You lost $50 on Vanguard. Waaaa! You can't get it back, get over it already. If you never wanna lose anything again, just play WOW the rest of your life. You can make 10,000 stupid decisions and never lose anything again. You can max out from level 1 to level 70 in 6 weeks. You can level fast. You can have it all. Go play it already, and leave the real games with challenge to those of us who like something that takes more then 2 brain cells to play and enjoy.

Another elitist. Please. Vanguard challenging? If getting killed by some random idiot who pulled a mob close to you and paying the exp penalty for it, spending a solid 15 minutes running back to get your corpse and if doing boring, unimaginative fed-ex and kill anything and everything quests all day is "challenging"...OK yeah. To say VG is more challenging and requires a brain...that's just a joke.
The only challange in Vanguard is finding a group to do your quest. Because if you can't you aren't going to level for a long time. I got to 14 by the end of the head start. after that I spent 3 days trying to find a group and could only advance in adventuring because my Dip quest was bugged and crafting in Tanvu was a lag fest. So I didn't pick up my preorder.

Item-centric = cool
group-centric = lame
Why did they have to kill SWG.
That is sad but true to a large extent,
Grinding xp by killing mobs is slooow.. the only way to get a decent chunk of xp is quests. And far too often finding a group so you can do those quests can be a major effort. And it does not help that so many of the quests are broken - you get to the last part, and find out that something is bugged.

You obvious have not been paying attention.
First of all, I have never played WOW. I started with Meridian 59 long before you knew what an MMO was.
I have maxed characters in EQ and EQ2, and had the same in DAOC and Asheron's Call.
And if you think that VG takes more than 2 brain cells to play, then you obviously have not played it. If you want something that takes real brainpower, then play Eve Online.
This game has billed itself as a 3rd generation MMO - but Asheron's Call has more original content. Sorry, but having a severe death penalty alone does NOT make for a thinking man's game, and neither does a mind numbing grindfest.
... don't buy this game. Your reasoning is poor Zaxx;
From reading _Jord_'s post it is clear he doesn't find the game fun, and you criticize him for being impatient.
Why would he be patient and stick to playing a game he didn't have fun playing?
It isn't as though there is a grand reward when you get to max level.
If Vanguard does require more than 2 brain cells it doesn't require much more - you're still doing the same thing over and over again.
_Jord_ also mentions many other issues which you don't defend.
From what I gather this game is about quests and not grind. I've tried to grind and the exp is horrendous. Yet if you grab a couple of those missives from the outposts and complete them you get an exp boost because you are killing things towards a goal.
I just wish I could have more than 20 quests, I keep having to delete ones so that I can get more.
I amplaying Vanguard right now. Level 17 has taken about as much time as level 45 in WoW. Does this make a game harder or easier?
Well it certainly is difficult for me to sit at the PC for 12 hours a day, I know some of you do. If only we could all makea real living as video game players we would be rich.
I dont think the CHinese gold famers make that much though tbqh.
We should ask ourselves, why do we play these games? FOr adventure, to feel like ahero? to be good looking in a world where we are maybe ugly? Ultimately to escape from the humdrum of real life. If i Have to escape for whatever reason, I want to feel powerful. Diablo 2 made me feel that way, as I ripped through hundreds of demons with a pike in a torrent of melee so wicked it could only be called whirlwind. I feel like a puny insignificant dweeb though, when it takes me and 5 other guys to kill 3 trolls etc.
my 2c i dunno.
I want to see Mythica in redevelopment, but thanks to Mythic Entertainment we will never see the genious behind that game come to fruition.
mmmm yeeeah, thats greeat, a little to the left would be greeeat, ::sips coffee mug:::

Have a nice day.

Your reasoning is poor Zaxx;- Zaxx
From reading _Jord_'s post it is clear he doesn't find the game fun, and you criticize him for being impatient.
Why would he be patient and stick to playing a game he didn't have fun playing?
It isn't as though there is a grand reward when you get to max level.
If Vanguard does require more than 2 brain cells it doesn't require much more - you're still doing the same thing over and over again.
_Jord_ also mentions many other issues which you don't defend.
I just wish I could have more than 20 quests, I keep having to delete ones so that I can get more.
Life can be tapped
