VG. American high end game?

DicharekDicharek Member UncommonPosts: 177
I have been thinking lately to buy and try VG out. But I have some questions before I'm ready to spend about $50 on somehting I don't know much about.

Don't worry there are just a few questions.

1.  Are all the VG servers situated in the USA? I live in in Europe, Sweden to be exactly. As I've heard alot of people say theres quite alot of lag, anyone who lives in Europe can tell me how bad the lag is going to be with a 2mbit connection?

2. I haven't played any other mmo with the kind of graphics VG is supposed to have. I have only played L2 and WoW with mentionable graphics. I know that saying I can play WoW at highest graphic settings  with an average of 50 fps doesn't say much since WoW grahpics isn't really good. But lets say I'm able to play Oblivion at highest settings, can I expect about the same quality/performance? And yes I understand the difference in graphic engines and whatnot, but still.

Please understand this last question right.. I'm not asking wether I can play Oblivion as well as VG at highest settings, but if the quality of the graphics and overall performance of the game may be the somewhat of the same.

I hope you understand my questions . Even more so that you have answers.

I severely disappointed that Sigil reads these boards.

FYI Sigil reps, don't read most of the posts that start with "I hate Vanguard."

You're right, how well you run WoW is no indication.

However, neither is Oblivion. I can run that game on highest settings with barely a hitch. Vanguard runs like molasses in January.

Then I'm sorry, you did not understand my question. I'll try to explain again: Oblivion is still one of the best looking games out there, thus my "comparison". I was wondering how the image quality was compare to the performance. VG may very well be better looking than Oblivion, but could I run the game at settings which will make it about the same class (as beautiful) as Oblivion (or Dark Messiah , NWN 2 or whatever) and still have a decent fps? Notice that I'm not asking wether which settings I could run the game on like som many others do. I'm merely wondering if having the same image-quality requires more performance from the computer in VG than Oblivion. That is a fair question isn't it?

Ah, so you do lurk these forums then, eh? Might I ask you, whilst you are here, why there are no official forums? Do you pay attention to the things mentioned here, as in actual arguments, since flames are probably of no use?

Back when I played, and as I understand it didn't get much better, only like 10-15%, it ate a lot of performance, taking in to account it's an unreal engine game, I'm quite surprized at how much ram it eats up. There are few show stopping bugs out there, one was fixed by a patch not long ago.

Be prepared, it will run a lot less smoothly than Oblivion, and I mean a lot.

There are a lot of guides out and about on how you can improve performance by tweaking your .ini files.

VG looks about half as good as Oblivion, and runs half as fast.

VG has the most inefficient graphics engine ever programmed, and may have potential, but runs just as bad as EQ2 in the graphics department.

If the game was programmed efficiently and didn't lag every 3 seconds, it would be awesome. Until Sigil gets off it's ass and does something about their horrible engine programming, the game is another "when will this game leave us alone?" title.

No official forums were decided upon well before I got here so I couldn't give you a specific answer as to why or how they came to that decision, nor would it be my place to relate those reasons to you, tbh.

And yes, I pay attention to concerns outlined by people, even if they are relayed in a less than eloquent fashion.  I just don't post often because my presence tends to offend some of the denizens of these forums, for reasons only beknownst to them.  And if those folks manage to refrain from flinging their poo like agitated monkeys, I'm usually harped on by folks like Anofayle that refuse to admit that I actually work at Sigil as a Designer and am not just "in the know."  Tough crowd around here, hehe

I am happy to address specific questions to the best of my ability, as long as the poo-flinging is kept at bay

I am one of the critics as well, and I want to add, that often we tell our opinions in ways that could best be described as sarcastic, but if you dig for the essence, you will realize the issues we are talking about are oft serious.

Any plans to liven up the water life?  No little fish for me to stare at in the water.  I WANNA STARE AT FISH!

    I really mean it.

  • Actually, since todays patch I am seeing a lot less crashes and video bugs - in fact none after playing about 5-6 hours.

As far as the graphics quality, I think it is much better than Oblivian - but it also takes a lot more RAM and a better card. And most of the problems I have seen have been either too low end a card, or an outdated driver.

Compared to EQ2, I would say that the detail of objects is better in VG, but the animations are much better in EQ2. EQ2 also seems to have a much wider range of landscapes. But then, EQ2 has had 2 years to work on it.

Yay for CylusSigil... Whilst I am not the biggest fan of Vanguard at the present time... I would definitely treat you with respect and have constructive dialog with you, and agree to disagree on many points, I am sure... Shame on anyone that would treat a person like an animal, over a game.

    Don't be shy Cylus .

Yea, there are plans and models are already made.  We've had little fish for a while and I just saw some big "fish" the other day.  It's always been an issue with water pathing but I've been told that those issues have been resolved, although I haven't tested that claim yet

Not sure of the exact number that have come and gone.  The character team is also responsible for NPC models, armor/clothing and other things so I've no idea who's on what.

I've spent well over half of the week so far meeting and speaking with various artists regarding weapon models, weapon particles, armor, two new NPC models and the continued design and construction of a very large premiere dungeon, the likes of which are pretty far and few between in MMOs.

An artist could be working on animations one day and armor the next.  If you have played the game, you can probably understand that I have many more important things to do than feverishly track what a particuluar artist is doing day to day

you mis understand, my perception is when you build a good team it is like a family. Cohesion imo is where you get the most out of your minute, and that is with any thing creative.  When you look at the animations they look good to you ?

You don't feel having dedicated artists working on one aspect of game is important to the overall feel of a game? And what is the over  all attitude at Sigil about all the criticism  from forums like these and others a crossed the internet? Are they taking some of the critiquing and feeding off of it to make the game better or just blowing it off like we don't know anything ?

Sorry for all these question but people want to know...

Sorry for all these question but people want to know...

The aforementioned character team is dedicated to the NPCs, PCs and their animations   There's a lot of things that go into making both PCs and NPCs look and function appropriately and we can't concentrate on one aspect without sacrificing a portion of another.  The one thing that we don't have is unlimited manpower or time; most companies don't, although we all wish we did.

To answer the other question, we all personally absorb what we can find useful in the critiques and fix/tweak what we deem appropriate.  Also, we constantly have meetings to go over what both players have said as well as what we ourselves have run into during our spare playing time.  On the other hand, i'll freely admit that I tend to read a thoughtful, well-written critique or question more thoroughly than a "wtf wus Sigil thnking? r they stoopid? Hire the janitors" type of post.

Many people here at Sigil play the game in their spare time, what little they have of it.  As such, it shouldn't surprise you that we are probably some of our worst critics

A rather specific question, but any chance of getting a dev response on the encounter script for Mara/Caia in Pantheon of the Ancients. Mara engages Caia responds to nothing before during or after the event, Mara casts the degen DoT even after she's died & people gated to khal etc.

We've tried a bunch of progressively weirder what if's each server up (it doesn't reset properly so have to wait for server refresh) and it appears broken, to our knowledge and from the thrads on fansites no1 has completed it on any server, none of the other late 20's/30's around Gelenia who've tried it have completed it to my knowledge. Any point to having another go before we out level it or is it busted? Would be great to know if it's a waste of time!

During my time iin Beta my cons :

Charater animation (as you could of guessed)

Hit Animations and position of hit effects

Bump mapping / multi layer texturing over used.

Lack of any innovation Gather quests

plainly put, nothing in the 20 levels shed any light on how epic I could be if I furthered my self into the world.

For the most part it really felt you put way to much on a players shoulder for them to turn on the light switch and see.

    Pros:

    Very nice sky

    The Dark Elf trees

    The Dwarfs Character design

Diplomacy , though it wore it welcome when i started losing lol

Chopping trees , though transporting them seemed odd.( I would been a fan for life their was a process that took you from , chopping the tree, transporting it ( oxe and cart  ) to a refinery/sawmill and watching the npc refine it until you had the option of building a player size refinery that other players could come and use. As well as you being able to create your own quest  by creating work orders for the other players to full fill)

sift through this forum cause under all this,  there is a lot of key points people made.

Thanks for you time , be well

    who me ?

The designer responsible was still actively working on fixing that quest, at least as of the last time that I asked him about it in passing.  As such, I personally have no idea when it will be fixed, only he does
