I'd say War of the Worlds, even though I can't stand Tom Cruise it felt more realistic.
Independence Day was way too overhyped. Come on, a scientist logs onto the aliens internet and infects it with a virus?
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
I keep going back and forth on this... Independence Day.. or War Of The Worlds... War Of The Worlds WAS wayyyy too over hyped. I'd go with Independence Day as an all around better movie.
"Holding on to what I have, pretending I'm a superman."
The new War of the Worlds was terrible. Poorly exacuted story, gaping plot holes and you could see freaking mic booms in the opening seens. Terrible, terrible movie.

Independence Day has that more inspired feel to it. Saving not only the country but the world in a threat that could destory mankind. Now, War of the Worlds...nah. It's just people running for their lives. I think that movie wasn't valid at all, espically the ending. I don't see how that kid lived and I kinda wish he died for his emo ways. That movie is a thriller and nothing else.

/Agree.
I loved Bill Pullman's (the president) speech....It was well written for that point in the movie and Pullman (excuse the pun) pulled it off really well. It was a chills moment for me in the theatre. There was nothing in WotW that gave me chills...
Soylent Green is people...it's PEOPLE!!!

I'd LOVE to see a movie from the perspective of some alien species who are about to be invaded by... humans.
Some kind of highly individualised species and civilization...
"The Matriarch turned towards me. Her tentacles gently waving in the wind as a sign of comfort. Well ,more as a sign that the situation was under control. How could she feel like that? For centuries now we fought the hu-man, ever since they almost destroyed our home world. Every planet gained on them was a painful victory... We had to adapt so many times... We had to seek out strange civilizations of distant futures simply to have a chance. But we succeeded. And here we are, on the flagship of the Eternal Blockade, guarding THEIR homeworld. But yet, we are unable to strike the final blow. Not because either of the species on our alliance doesn't want to... No, because we can't. The universe knows we tried. The Matriarch knows we tried and failed. She has commissioned thousands of invasions on the ravaged planet. And yet they won't die. Their world is nothing more than a barely coherent radioactive rubble. But now, today we know that they are not beaten. Hu-man is back.
At least, that is what the Matriarch said. Out of the blue, she simply announced that the sensors measured C2 activity inside the shields surounding their planet and moon. C2, meaning enough energy build-up to mirror the power of a galaxy. How is that possible?
It doesnt matter. No force in the universe can withstand the attack we are launching now. We mobilized every rock in the whole damned solar system. And in a few minutes they will all appear out of light speed, on a collision course with that devilish planet. To end the conflict forever.
But yet... All those stories. Their strange bodies. The way how they move like one organism. How they refuse to abandon one of their own, despite massive losses. And the simple fact that they waged war with half a galaxy. And now this.
I look at the Matriarch. She's beautiful. And yes, she calms me. Everyone on the massive bridge, no matter what species, is inspired by her calmth. Because for her, it's an entirely different matter. She's the last remnant of the first civilization to be destroyed by the Hu-man. For her it's personal.
A vibration in the floor warns us. It is time. The clouded planet is clearly visible on the viewscreen with it's shield softly glowing against the ebony background of space. And suddenly it's surrounded on all sides by countless meteorites and planetoids. All emerging from Q-time in a single soundless swirling of the universe. One by one the soulless army of rocks sets course for the most hated planet in the known universe.
Almost there... Almost... Then something is different. The shield is gone. In one split second the massive and mysterious energy build up is gone too. The creatures on the bridge each display the respective signs of total surprise, if their species has them. Are they giving up? Are they realizing that it is over? Is it over?
I don't know. I have been brought up to know that there is one danger in the universe surpassing all others... And now the source of countless nightmares, is giving up? Ohn feeble hope, be justified. Please be justified.
Bright flashes ascending trough the thick clouds of the planet mark the start of the bombardment. So many flashes that the planet seems to be nothing more than a bright white ball. It's evolving so rapidly that I hardly have time to see the massive moon crack into pieces like it hasn't survived billions of years. The planet formaly known under thousands of names, but only dreaded as "Earth" is dying. Finally. The process is almost too short to signify the end of the greatest struggle in the galaxy. But for the species who were formed by battle for a thousand years it is sufficient. We watch the trillions of pieces adrift, colliding in a ballet of the vanquished. Oh sweet victory. The beautifully formed tentacles of the Matriarch are vibrating. Is this how her kind used to expres joy? I have never seen it before. Perhaps because it's the first time there is place for joy, without the constant vigilance needed to survive under the threat of the Hu-man.
I'm too happy to notice the signs of happiness from the others. It's over. I can't believe it's over. I stare into my 3D radar, seeing nothing but the known pictures of the destroyed wotrlds they used to leave behind in their relentless crusade to be the prime species.
But despite the euphoria I notice a change. There is... A wall. A wall in the middle of my radar. A massive wall in space. Stretching all the way from Jupiter to Mars. No more cries of joy. No more vibrating.
It is not over. My screen shuts off and so do the others. Except for the viewscreen on which a shape is visible on a black background. A member of an encyclopedic species notes it looks like a Hu-Man baby, without any personal characteristics. Then I feel the air vibrating. It is speaking. Someone translates mercilessly, while I realize I do not want to know.
"We. Are. Mankind. You. WILL. Be. Destroyed."
All screens and equipment activates, the lights and indicators start blinking again and the air is filled with mechanic vibrations. But on the viewscreen there's only that last Hu-Man fleet. The greatest one of all. The one to surpass all memories. Nobody is moving. Nobody even breaths, if they breath. We can only watch in horror as the fleet of countless ships crawls out of the last emenants of what must have been some kinds of quantum teleportation pockets and sets course for us, the last alliance of the rebellion. And yet we undertake no action. We can only watch in awe while their engines burn with a fire hotter than the exhaust fumes of a black hole.
I suddenly have a felling of unspeakable clarity. There is no hope. We are not strong enough. I witness the final moments of the Matriarch as she dies in utter despair. I continue to watch the oncoming doom.
In waves their weapons are fired.
The clarity gets stronger. We are not worthy. Today we are meeting God.
The explosions create a light that casts a shadow on the sun itself, ravaging the hopes of a galaxy.
