Favorite all time was the first Ultima Online. From the Winter of 1997 all the way to 1999-2000. I loved the game, played it like a madman. I have played many games since, and none to me that had caught the feel of community like UO did. Back then people relied on each other for help. Then came trammel and well, there went the community. And they kept on butchering the game since Garriot left to where it just looks like UO, the mechanics are completly ruined.

Everquest was my second favorite. Although i lost interest when they increased the levels to 65. It took soooooo long to get to 47 and i was on Rallos Zek and levels meant alot for pvp. Everquest was also my worst game, just for the simple fact that so many games have since copied the treadmill type system.

Oddly enough im going to say also COH, im haveing a blast.. But there needs to be PVP. At least PVP zones, this game screeams pvp. I just hope city of villains is done right. Because if they do get the pvp right, and dont start increasing level limit, this will be right up there with early UO for me.

No game comes close to early UO though for me, especially pvp. That was a good system. I have tried player run servers since then, but it just isnt the same.

I've played a few mmorpgs over the years.  By far they are my favorite type of game.  It is very hard to pick a favorite, because many of them have different things in them that I like, but so far not one has all the things put together.  Here is what I have played so far:

Ultima Online - 1st mmorpg I ever played, great expereince, played until Everquest.

Everquest - possibly the most fun I ever had when playing a mmorpg, I lost interest as time went on, especially when DAoC came out.

Dark Age of Camelot - DAoC probably has most of the features I look for in a mmorpg.  It was well done right from the start, and constantly improving.  I still play it.

Anarchy Online -  Broken piece of crap in the beginning, when I played.  Didn't like it.

World War II Online - I don't consider this a mmorpg, but some people do.  it was alright, fun for a while, but broken when I played.

Star Wars Galaxies - A great game for a true roleplayer and for Star Wars fans, but lacking in many key areas.  It could still improve, I still play.

Horizons - I sort of liked it, it was fun to craft.  The character models were too ugly, but the world graphics were nice.  I liked the music too, but not enough substance to keep me hooked.

Final Fantasy XI - I was addicted for a couple of months, but after a while it go too hardcore, too much time to find a group and it really required more time and effort than I was able to committ, otherwise, I would still be there, it was a lot of fun, and very detailed.  Great graphics, story, and gamelplay.  Too bad I have a life . . .

Lineage II - Yes, I know what you're all going to say, but I like it.  I think it's fun.  But again, it is one heck of a grind and I don't know how long I can stick with it before I get burnt out.  It requires a lot of time as FFXI does, especially when you're in a clan and you need to try and keep up with your clan mates with the ultimate goal of getting the clan promoted, getting the castle, and participating in PvP and clan warfare.  That alone keeps me going . . .

I am waiting for Everquest II.  When that comes, I will definitely try it, and if it is half as good as it seems, I'll be in mmorpg heaven.

Hmm... I've played: EQ, RO, AO, AC2

*Sigh* (Answered this question too often) image

Ironically, the best mmorpg (one that held my attention the longest) was diablo 2

... perhaps it was the superior pvp, mindless pking or the fact that I was able to help manipulate the market during the dupe craze.....

I spent close to three years playing it..... and it's still a mmorpg even though it doesn't have a monthly fee

Shame that many things didn't learn from it.

I suggest you just wait for guildwars (if you are a competitive soul) or maybe WoW (watch blizzy blow em out of the water) .

If you are looking for high player numbers go fr CoH

If you are looking for high japanese female player numbers go for FFXI image

(some dudes in RO just joined it because of the fallacious rumor that it was mostly occupied by asian chicks... LIES ... ALL LIES)

If you are looking for a good game...... wait.....

If you can't wait then go for AO (take advantage of the 5$ a month and free trial offer)

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

    Played in order..

UO- My first graphical MMORPG. Eventually quit due to lag issues and poor customer service

Everquest - My first REAL dive into it all. Played it on and off for 2 years. The game was fun levels 1 to 50. 51 to 65 was just too much of a grind. But you can't complain about the content in EQ thats for sure

AO-- played it right at launch ugg what an experience. Quite soon after and went back to EQ. Went back after trying DAOC and found it to be MUCH improved. Funcom did a great job rebounding and making AO one of the top 3 MMORPG's imo. Considering going back now till WoW comes out.

DAOC- PLayed this from launch. Despite what some say its launch wasn't that great and in 3 hours of playing you could max out the content that was in game. So yes they touted one of the smoothest launches ever fact is it was smooth cause there was NOTHING in the game at launch notta zippo. PLayed it on and off as well. But the grind and crappy CS from Mythic finally made me shelve this game for good. It definitely is NOT as good as some reviewers would have us believe.

Neocron- a short lived experience. Nice game nice concept but the learning curve in this game made AO's look simple.

Horizons- Well this game was a major dissapointment for me thus far. Its getting better but we are starting to see now that AE is severely limited in what they can do due to poor overall engine choice. Everything and I mean everything in HZ is third party in nature. AE coded nothing of their own and just took 3rd party crap and modified it to fit HZ. If you read istaria.com and then actually play the game you will be severely disappointed. Don't let the crafting system fool you. Sure it is the most featured out of current MMORPG's but its one hell of a boring grind and with no uniqueness or immersion to the system.

Best overall I would have to say AO by far. COnsidering going back till WoW comes out. Might consider COH if the box cost comes down. After shelling out $100 plus for two copies of horizons I am never paying $50.00 for an MMORPG box again. No game is that good espicially an MMORPG which by its very nature isn't complete at launch... however I think Blizzard will set new MMORPG standards with WoW... that is just something that can't be denied.

The best gaming experience I have had thus far is EverQuest.  This game completely took me in, completely soaked up my time and immersed me into a fantastic pixel world.

The community was great, they were friendly and experienced.  As with most games you occassionally ran into someone who was on the rough end but that's what makes meeting those who are helpful all the better.

This game has a lot of implimentation and not one game to date can take my thoughts of wanting to go back, away.

The only reason I had quit this game was for the death system. The corpse I once had was taken due to the Armor Decay.  After that I decided to leave the game!

I would have to agree with this statement.  EQ was and forever will be my true introduction into the mmorpg world.   The community was great all the kids were kept to a dull roar because your reputation was something important in eq.  Hopefully it will be the same in eq2.  If you had a crappy rep in eq everybody knew about it and you paid the price.  I.E. no groups no guild invites and no respect from anyone.   This is the way a community should be.  It should be nurturing and at the same time menacing to anyone who tries to harm the community.   This was teh reason I loved eq in the beginning.  Hopefully EQ2 will have that same feel and perhaps it will ressurect the community in mmorpg's.  As of now there is nothing  on the market that will ever come close to replicating what eq did.    L2 is pathetic.  CoH has great char customization features and is fun to play but I'm more of a midevil roleplayer.  At any rate just my two cents.

King of MMORPGs is EQ. The grind was fun and meaningful the first time through. The hell levels felt like accomplishments. Getting out from behind the book was huge. Death hurt and had meaning (although I never liked the risk of corpses poofing with items). And it had hands down the best ever up to this point. I think it peaked for me in SoV. Those raids were so much fun, and the faction system actually made sense. SoL had a good idea with AAs (so you could always improve your character), but it was a massive time sink. Then PoP came out and all the content the game had for level 60s now became meaningless with the new, higher exp zones, and the new level cap. PoP actually cut down on the content in EQ. And it was an even worse time sink than SoL. LDoN was pretty good, but I have heard nothing good about GoD (I quit again earlier this year). It was a fun four years (on and off), but it has just become too much of an uber game for me.

Now, I pretty much hate PvP, but I must say that DAoC had the best PvP system I have yet seen. There was no trash talking, no dewd speak, and no getting jumped unless you were hunting somewhere that you knew it was a possibility. It had a better crafting system than EQ (slightly), but the PvE wasn't as good as it should have been (and I don't know why). And the grind through the 40s was crazy for a game where PvP was the goal and levels were everything. Overall, it was a pretty fun experience.

Best crafting hands down is SWG. The game may have lacked in other areas (like the ability to continually improve your character other than just having more money), but the crafting was top notch. The only problems in the system I could see is that it was still something of a grind without lower level items that were of much use, and there was so much customization of items, that it is extremely database intensive. I don't care what anyone says bad about it though, the crafting system in SWG was great, and I think it could be nearly perfect with just a few tweaks.

Now, the most fun I have had in a game from the very start has to be CoH. The game is just amazingly fun. So much fun that I am playing it right now and must get back to it. Hmmm, maybe I will make another character, even that is fun in CoH. image
