You know, you just made that little light bulb go on in my head. It isbetter to subscribe to 2 games than pay the new Station Pass fee if you really only plan to play/pay for 2 games! ...since with 2 full subscriptions you could double-box (or share with a friend) and log into both simultaneously, whereas with the Station Pass, you can't be logged into more than one game at a time. Therefore:
Unless you play 3 or more games for >=$10/month worth each, you're losing out to have Station Pass;
So, they must actually want players of just 2 games to cancel Station Pass (poison pill?);
Or, they plan to raise individual game rates soon.
I'm guessing #3. ...Which is another self-inflicted bullet to the foot for SOE since a whole new wave of free-to-play and $5 - $10/month games is knocking at their customers' electronic doorstep. Since SWG was once my favorite MMO, it's just sad.
Sony Online Entertainment raises rate for Station Access Subscription. Looks like starting April 2 the new price will be $29.99/month.
We want to give you some important information(BULLSHIT) regarding your Station Access(SLAVERY) subscription. Effective April 2, 2007, the new monthly subscription rate will be US$29.99 per month (not including applicable taxes). We know that rate adjustments are never popular(BECAUSE WE ARE ASSHATS), but the increase is driven by our desireI(OUR BLANTANT GREED) to provide our Station Access subscribers with a consistently high quality entertainment experience( WHICH IS TERRIBLE AS WE ARE ASSHATS WHO FOLLOW SMEDLYS EVERY THOUGHT), as evidenced by our most recent addition to the Station Access subscription plan(WHICH WE HOPE TO UTTERLY DESTROY LIKE SWG AND EQ), Vanguard: Saga of Heroes™. You don't have to do a thing( EXCEPT BEND OVER AND ACCEPT THIS VIOLATION); you will automatically ( BE RIPPED OFF )be migrated to the new monthly subscription rate under your existing subscription plan when your current subscription plan comes up for renewal on or after April 2, 2007. We appreciate( DO NOT GIVE A FLYING FRACK ABOUT YOU THE CLIENT BECAUSE SMEDLY NEEDS A NEW CAR!!!) your support and continued participation in our community.
Station Access subscriptions are ( A CONTRACT WITH THE DEVIL{SMEDLY} FOR YOUR SOUL)recurring, meaning you will continue to be billed at the appropriate subscription interval, until you affirmatively( WAKE THE HELL UP AND DITCH SOE TILL THEY WAKE AND FIRE SMEDLY) cancel your subscription. Subscription fees are subject to tax and value-added tax, as applicable. The subscription charges are in addition to the cost of the games that are part of the Station Access subscription plan. All game software is sold separately. ( WE WILL CONTINUE ON OUR PATH OF MMORPG SELF DESTRUCTION UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF OUR IMPERIOUS LEADER SMEDLY THE FOOLISH, DESTROYER OF GOOD MMOS)

"You don't have to do a thing; you will automatically be migrated to the new monthly subscription rate under your existing subscription plan when your current subscription plan comes up for renewal on or after April 2, 2007. We appreciate your support and continued participation in our community."
I always love it when a company raises fees and then claims that automatically raising them is the same as being 'convenient' to their customers.
Everyone knows this is just a tactic that takes advantage of people who might not notice the sudden increase in fees and not cancel until a couple of months later.
If they were really interested in their customers they would tell people to re-subscribe at the new rate or else their subscriptions will be cancelled. Of course they won't get that income from those people who take longer to notice the hike and quit.
Of course, if you play two of the MMOs in the SP list, then for many it still works out a bit cheaper, as you only pay tax once.
So paying taxes on 14.99 twice is more expansive than paying taxes on 29.99 ?
Considering that 14.99 x 2 equals 29.98 it should be the other way around and still not worth mentioning.
Of course it might be possible that you assume that taxes will be charged for only one game, since you are not allowed to play more than one game at a time. However, i doubt that the these finer points of tax calculatiion are used at SOE headquarters. At least not for subscribers.
Its the stupiest thing they could have ever done, and ever did, unlesss they spending more than they get. Now i am pretty sure a lot of players will not play their games, thats obvious they did a huge mistake and on our game market you can't afford mistakes. I , myself not going to pay that money, a lot of people won't, there is only one thing to say......
2) Trying to win the golden loaf award. For the top company to shit on their community and customers the most.
3) Cleaning money for the mob.
4) Proving that they are completely out of touch with the gaming scene and its consumers. The deaf leading the blind, while everyone yells to him telling him there is a problem, the deaf cant hear and the blind don't see it. But they can all talk and that's all they do. Till the problem hits em right in the face.
SOE needs to get out of the "ego" bubble their in and get some fresh eyes on their situation. If i was running SOE id site down an hour out of every week and read forum notes and feeling posted by folks. To put it in perspective how my company is being perceived. And for nothing else, the bubble popping cold shower of truth. For a Japanese company I regret to say, they have no honor, And a company with no honor is a thief and a lier.
When did making games become " just a job" SOE? With honor comes pride, and um i see no pride in your lineup. i would give in depth examples of issues but , shit why, they don't read these forums, and I'm banned at Planetside forums for being honest with them about their changes to Planetside and the nerfing over and over, i don't think anyone seen the post since the next day they put up new forums and all the previous forum posts were deleted. Either that's a coinkydink or i hit a nerve. I hope its the latter since i was in the earliest form of beta. But that a whole nother deal and folks here all have their own little war story and lost fight with SOE and SOE's dismissive approach to community and product.
As my gay uncle says, b!tch you aint all that * snap* snap* snap*
I'd almost bet this brilliant idea came right after Smedly had to stand in front of the board of directors of Sony and explain just why he had thought it was a good idea to publish Vanguard and hand McQuaid a sack full of money when Micro Soft was dumping them.
I just thought of a smart way that they can spin this. They announce this higher rate, give it some time, and then come out and say that they've listened to their customers, and their issues, and are offering existing SoE station pass customers a lifetime price of $24.99, as long as their subscription is active at the time of the increase.
That way they get a flood of people signing up to the station pass before the increase just so they can ensure that they get the lower rate. Then they get all the extra money and the players think they got a nice gift from SoE. Win-win situation, in that they just make more money on us gamer schlebs.
When I read the news on price increase for the Station Access Subscription, I was shocked and puzzle why on earth did they do such thing that is so much different from the current market standard price.
At the first glance, yeah, people were comments SOE being greedy or something. But I try to look at a bigger picture (no, I'm not supporting the price increase though. But there's something else, read on.)
During the NGE release, SOE ever mentioned they are looking for a new breed of customers, they do believe old customers will leave eventually (there's no such thing as happy-ever-after). So, in order to let SWG live longer in the MMO market, they have to put in all effort to make it happen..........this problem surfaced when MS Vista come to the market.
I believe people who bother to find out what's actually Vista new feature is, know the inherent problem lies on major compatibility issue between the application and the hardware. And of course, the digital media protection stuff that will shutdown your application if it found out it is illegal (there are lots of articles on this defect if you look them up from Google search).
Well, what does that going to affect SOE? (not only SWG, it will be across the board)
Additional licensing, 3rd party accessment, application overhaul etc., you named it, these cost eventually will falls on consumers.
This is not a good sign if MS XP, eventually, been phased out from the market and left Vista, all of us will be affected. That will be a major concern for old games longetivity (I bet EQ2 may have a better chance to survive as a new game).
If now we blow our temper to SOE, but they managed to balance their cash flow in this way, I predict the rest of the software house will do the same thing.
Imagine, no more free subs on GW from NCsoft, and all those well known company will increase price gradually (or in a smarter way )
We have to face this, business is business, we gamers only interested in fun factor, not other people business. If some MMO company gone bankrupt down the road, we won't pump money to them mindlessly, we just shed a weeny tiny tears and move on to other games.
I'll certainly put an eye on the games I play right now. (I won't join in the gang stomp on a dead rat, instead, there are more of them lurking behind our back)
It wont take long until SoE will rise the monthly price for every indivual game just to make station pass good again. Just wait and see.
They already stasrted. I received this email
*----- Dear PlanetSide Subscriber, We want to give you some important information regarding your PlanetSide subscription. Funny enough, I am not a subscribed to PS. I used to own an all accfess pass though. Guess this was not meant to send out.
I agree with those who state that the All Access Plan is no longer a good deal. It was nice to have, so i could check out if SWG would be back to a game I would like to play again (it is not IMHO), MxO is nice to check out some days, so is EQ2. However, I usually only play EQLive, so subscribing only to that game safes me money. I do not intend to play Vanguard, the Beta was enough for me.
So until EQlive is completely broken, I pay that subscribtion and have to accept that i loose the 2 additional char slots. I may found a guild to make up for the lost Bankslots http://images.mmorpg.com/images/emoticons/emt_biggrin.gif
If SOE tries to raise the EQlive subscribtion any higher, I regret to say I will stop playing EQ too. Considering the age of EQ and SOEs policy to push an expansion every 6 months for an additional 30$, EQlive is alredy more expensive than most of its competitors.
I am not bashing SOE here. It is simple a matter of getting the right amount of value for my money.
Some folks here argue that 5$ more would be not that much. One poster was suggesting to get another job if one can not afford 5 $ more a month. For me these people miss the point. It is not about being able to afford. It is about wanting to afford. Why would i want to pay a premium price for a mediocre product ? Because I *can afford it* ? I leave that to Porsche drivers.
So people that are not yet old enough to recieve bills or even have to pay bills in rl will be effected by this, those that understand that some bills need to be paid will not complain, unless these type of people complain about everything wich can be raised. Maybe some of you need to get out more , see what things cost in real life, see how much bills people have to pay and yes most bills every year get higher and with these bills we do not have the choice as like people have with SOE, if you can't pay it, don't like it, or refuse to do it , then leave it at what it is, this is a choice people can make, but it seems that many people are unable to come to terms with it. Indeed just like i can not get to terms to read so many narrowminded people complaining about nothing. When people do have a social life they will know what that is costing them, and silly upgrade in SOE sub-fee is not something to get all worked out over.
I cant believe you people still havent learned, that dealing with an MMO company is a losing issue no matter who they are.
It took over 100 years for people to finally get the idea Tobacco companies were what they are.
It took over 50 years for people to realize used car salesman lied and abused thier customers, some states still havent figured this out and taken the needed steps.
It took over 20 years for people to realize cereal companies AND record companies AND OIL companies and etc.. were vastly over charging them.
So tell me,how many years before you all realize that MMO companies are going to screw you anyway they think they can make a profit at ??
Deal with companies like SOE, get screwed.
Its not a hard concept to grasp.
Its also NOT going to change until enough of you take action the only ways they care about.
Now some people, will come long and tell you your over reacting. They'll tell you its NOT a big deal.
When they do, look to history to see these people for what they are.Look at the people who thought smoking wasnt a big deal. That cereal prices, oil prices, record prices, drug prices, car prices,etc... were "just fine".
Yes, the MMO industry in general is among the worst in customer service, gaulity of product, and value for price.
BUT its YOU that allow them to be so.
Without you, they are just another greedy and arrogant collection of people who would soon need to find new jobs.
if you cant afford 5 bucks more, you shouldnt be playing any P2P games at all, and get a second job or something.
It's not about the "5 bucks more" as much as "getting what you pay for".
I was thinking about playing Vanguard and adding it to a Station Pass. Someone is using my SWG account and I can easily justify establishing a Station Pass Account. The problem is SOE's games suck. Those which are availble on the Station Pass are mediocre at best and even then, they are not good.
I would have paid 21.xx for the station pass to play a couple of their games. It would have given me a chance to retry and dabble with EQ2 (which was fair then became worse during the first 4-5 months I played it), play some vanguard (I love the resource gathering although the game is NOT complete) but have no intent to play Star Wars Galaxies (I would drop all game subscriptions I currently maintain to play the original pre-combatUpgrade version).
And $5 is nothing. I'll tip that to a cab driver. I tip $5 a week to the cute girl who makes me a cup of coffee in the morning. I'm going to head out to an all-you-can-eat Sushi restraunt today for lunch and order a few beers. Five U.S. Dollars can be obtained from gathering the spare change out of my pants pockets. But I'll be damned if I'm going to give an extra 5 dollars to some crap hole developer/publisher of a company for an unknown reason without a reasonable return in quality.
Bottom line, SOE sucks. They are a terrible development studio with a sliver of talented individuals becoming distraught with their positions and reputations. The direction and vision implemented by John Smedley is a joke.
SOE has just "New Game Experianced" themselves!! rip.
I cant believe you people still havent learned, that dealing with an MMO company is a losing issue no matter who they are.
This is something you learn in life and know prices might go up
It took over 100 years for people to finally get the idea Tobacco companies were what they are.
I’m not even 100 years and knew much sooner then that what they are about
It took over 50 years for people to realize used car salesman lied and abused thier customers, some states still havent figured this out and taken the needed steps.
Actually if you see it this way you probably see everything in a negative way
It took over 20 years for people to realize cereal companies AND record companies AND OIL companies and etc.. were vastly over charging them.
This is something I already knew before i owned a car, didn’t take me 20years to figure that out.
So tell me, how many years before you all realize that MMO companies are going to screw you anyway they think they can make a profit at??
Depence if you see everything that negative like you do you probably feel screwed over many times
Deal with companies like SOE, get screwed.
It’s not a hard concept to grasp.
It’s also NOT going to change until enough of you take action the only ways they care about.
Yes stop crying about it
Now some people, will come long and tell you your over reacting. They’ll tell you its NOT a big deal.
Which is right , if this is a big deal then really some people need to open there eyes, WAR, World hunger, Terrorist, Cancer, Aids, Drugs, those things are big deals and people need to worry bout that, not little things that happen every day on a regular basis regardless what industry.
When they do, look to history to see these people for what they are. Look at the people who thought smoking wasn’t a big deal. That cereal prices, oil prices, record prices, drug prices, car prices,etc... were "just fine".
Yes look at all these people that eventually made a diference in history regardless if one agrees or not, you must be blind not to see so.
Yes, the MMO industry in general is among the worst in customer service, gaulity of product, and value for price.
You forgot that this has been your personal opinion and based on your personal experience.
BUT its YOU that allow them to be so.
Without you, they are just another company trying to pay the bills, regardless if one likes it or not, good thing everyone is still free to either stay with SOE or leave SOE its what you really can do trust me no one is forcing you to stay with SOE because you don’t have too
Yes it is a big deal. It’s only five dollars, ok true. Extra $5 isn’t gonna break most people’s bank. But I can see how that extra cost can be a stretch for what most people are willing to spend their money on per month hence the bitching. Consider they had even a measly 50,000 SP accounts pay that extra $5 per month. That’s $250,000 more per month. For what? What do you get for your extra $5 a month? A few old games no one plays and 1 new one that’s unplayable? What do they need more money from us for? Did they re-implement the Friday’s donut and bagel cart delivery over there? Lol whatever. Really there is no benefit for paying for it since most people don’t play more than 2 games per month. Now most will only play one, if any.

I do think the same about :
Taxes, Oil prices, Food prices, Car prices, Healthcare prices, overall Goverment, Are you also that narrowminded to count everyone that is paying taxes and are you looking what is spend with your tax money, trust me we do not know half of what is spend with our tax money, atleast with SOE we have a choice, MANY OF YOU SEEM BLIND TO UNDERSTAND THAT YOU CAN HAVE A CHOICE.
Just sad to see that so many people have a hard time accepting things that are in no way a BIG DEAL, like i said before , WAR, AIDS, HEALTCARE ect ect are things that can be called big deals, unless if you are a teenager then you have no real sence yet of what big deals in life really are.
Learn to make choices, it seems that the making choices is skipping a generation as many seem not to be able to
The thing is they have had a 36% increase in less than a year. It was only last May they increased it from 21.99 to 24.99. Taking it up to $8.00 from $21.95 to $29.95 because some bad business decisions is just another bad business decision in my opinion. Bottom line is you are paying for Vanguard if you have Station Access whether you play Vanguard or not. SO if you just want SWG and EQII best thing is to buy them on individual subscriptions and pay a few months in advance.
Originally posted by LordCaptain The real kicker is that this is actually $0.01 more expensive then just subscribing to two games at the normal $14.99...Those crooks...On a side note: It was barely a "Deal" before this new price hike...
It's ever more because for a standard game you can pay a few months in advance and get it as cheap as 11.99 per month. This is not available for station pass.

I think it’s a little ridiculous to compare commodities to MMO games since their cost is based more heavily on supply and demand where MMOs are not, so you can put that comparison to rest.
So you think it’s ok to pay more for no additional content? The older games are running skeleton crews now and you are gonna pay more for less. Maybe you should be working for SOE, that's to say if you don't already work for them. If Funcom came out and said they were gonna start charging $16.99 a month for Anarchy Online due to inflation, but admitted they won't be adding much more to the game after they raise it you know what people would say? GFO. With SOE it's all about greed and nothing more. I guess it’ll take a few months for this to catch up with them but as you can see people aren’t happy with it and if it comes down to playing only one SOE game then that’s what people are gonna do since it’s no longer a good deal.

As long as people keep paying it. $OE will keep charging it.
The crying shame is, people are going to keep paying. Even for substandard content.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
I miss DAoC
