Well, EverQuest is lagging (not my interest in it, but the game), so I'm trying out EQ II, but my 3 month game card is about to expire (it was a christmas gift)... so...
I'm into day 2 of my 14 day free trial of Eve Online... still in the tutorial thing.
I have a few grumbles about the tutorial, but over all I'm pretty impressed with the sci-fi motif spsmile.gif
If your out there, I might even talk to you <lol>
>- Later the same day -<
well, I won't go into my "grumbles" over the tutorial, they may be old GUI issues...
But now I'm stuck. I've got my third (or is it second) mission, to kill some snakes - took me about 45 minutes to figure out where they were, after I got to the warp point... then I got ganked by "normal" pirates before I could even get near the snakes... now my newbie ship is on fire, I'm out of armor and can't figure out how to get any benefit from the "repair module"... or should I warp home and repair or should I do something else??? And I only have 13 days left to decide!!!
I'm thinking that Eve needs to expand it's tutorial, slightly... it's not an intuitive game.
>- Later the same day -<
So, I finally figured out where the snakes were, but got jumped by 5 pirates... these pirates were big enough that nothing I could do would get me within 500? which seems to be my best damage range (?). So, I did the best I could. Killed two before the others starting eating my hull - I warped out.
Rethought the challenge. Bought the next size up frigate that I could aford (Atron?). Went back for a second round!!
Only to discover that .... only rookie ships and shuttles can do this mission <sigh>
So, after returning to where I left my rookie ship - swapping all modules... and heading out, again (I've lost my time bonus).
This time I take out the pirates, first!
Then ... from beyond my range, the snakes take me out. Now I'm in my egg, looking for a warm nest <sigh>
Break time!

The rookie missions require a rookie ship. That doesn't mean you have to 'suck' though
1) Buy a couple longer ranged guns (small size).... the newbie ships will all hold 1 or 2 guns. Usually only 1 will fit though... get one, and fit that and your rookie gun if you can't fit a 2nd gun. Try to buy "NAMED" guns, they're a little better than the standard ones and they have lower fitting requirements.
2) If you don't have the skills for a real one buy a civillian shield booster. The rookie ships don't armor tank worth a darn so don't even try that. Get a civvie shield booster (hey get 2, they're cheap) and use those instead.
3) In your 'low' slot you can just stick a civillian cargo expander....
There are ways to fit it better but this should be *plenty* for the rookie missions.
Pay attention to the stats on your weapons. There's 2 key figures you will care about at this stage:
Optimal Range
Falloff Range
Fight anywhere within your optimal range (or beyond) up to, but not more than, your falloff.
IE:
Optimal: 6000m
Falloff: 3000m
Fight enemies anywhere between about 3500m and about 8500m. It's, obviously, best to fight them right at 6000m in the above example but anywhere within that 3000m radius of your optimal is fine.
Hope this helps. I'm not a fan of amarr ships so I can't give you more specific advice than this but it should get you going in the right direction. Also: Do not be affraid to ask in the chat channels for help/advice.

Atron isn't Amarr
Gallente FTW
Ok well how old is it?
One suggestion though is to read everything. The entire mission briefing and then ask for details from the agent as that will have more essential information or check your journal.
Another tip.. When you're in a stick, right click.
Lol wow... when I tried the trial I didn't have nearly this much trouble...
Currently Playing: WoW (somewhat)

Okay, it's the next day and I've learned a few things
The game isn't as tough as I thought. But it took a bit to figure out that the agents hate me.
First problem was the mission. The Serpenti Spies (2 of them) prolly can't be taken out with the rookie ship, in the rookie configuration (mining laser + 1 electron blaster). I actually figured that part out - but didn't know what to do about it.
See, I didn't have any ISK, cause I wasn't mining. I wasn't mining, cause I was doing the missions. The agent, with a -11 Quality sent me to my doom! <lol>
Taram's advice was actually what I needed, then just the cash to make it happen - then some ship knowledge (what would fit in which high power slot). Buddy loaned me some ISK and I was set!
Took out the spies (lost my time bonus) and then moved on.
Now, I'm looking at missiles.

So far I have have upgraded my frigate to the top one, and then lost it on a mission. I had to go back to that mission 3 times poding back after losing my ship but it was hella fun having an actuall challenge for a change. I love this game so far and think it will definatley occupy me for a good long time! fear me fellow pilots because in time, I'll be coming for YOU!
normally I do not do the whole all caps, crap but I must make sure you understand the above. That mission is in no way shape or form easy. I damn near lost my T2 Frigate on the level 1, because I wasn't expecting it. While you can do it I highly suggest that you get a group together as yuo will more and likely lose your ship solo for a while. Besides that most of the other missions are doable one you figure it out. By the way when you gain the ability to use the Armor hardners on your gallentee ships(don't bother with shield tanking them they are much better armor tanks) you can find out the damage types to resist at eveinfo.com. Also consider picking up Evemon from Evemon.battleclinic.com as it has alot of nice tools for planning you character out. Seems to be a bit easier to plan skills then doing it manually in game.
When you first enter the deadspace, turn on the afterburner and go right into the gate. Nothing should touch you.
Next pocket 2 will target you, go away from everything and kite those. Then turn on the afterburner and go to the gate, nothing will touch you.
Then once you get in the 3rd pocket you can take them all on, but not needed. Go to the cargo, open it, and then warp back to the station.
LvL 1's are easy, i dont understand why some ppl lose a ship, obviously the first week when you dont know how things work. There are a lot of expert tactics you can do to avoid death. Things like tracking etc. But for newbies your mission is to learn the basics of the game while training basic skills after a month you should be setting a goal for a cruiser and how you would fit it, while 50% you train your learning skills.
You should be training most basic skills to lvl 3. Also the community is great, ask in your npc corp chat if they could give you a few 100k. If you had 500k in isk and most of the basic skils to fit a frigate you actually would pretty much have the same type of fittings at the 30mil sp players. They will just be going that little bit faster, shooting that bit quicker, recharging cap a little faster, and doing a little bit more dmg but overal you will be suprised.
If you focused on frigates for 3-5months you would be able to fly the same frigs as me and fit them just as well and i have been playing for over a year.
Have fun
Actually, I started a second character and skipped the tutorial. Having been through it once and finding myself wrecked on the shores of a mission... I rethought my strategies.
With a different race (Calamari?) who specialize in missile tech, things are a bit different. Now it's me standing off out of range and blasting the test-pirates into vapor. Also by skipping the tutorial, I can get some mining in. Using my rookie ship for mining, I was able to buy the low end frigate and slowly equip it. Once it was ready and stocked, I swapped ships and sought out an Agent - best I could find was Quality -5 (but she was cute). Got my mission, rescue some bad guys and turn them over to the coppers! Easy as pie, cleared out all the fake-pirates and then started bashing on the transport (was worried that it had to many hit points, but I beat it), even collected my time bonus on this one.
Now, I've got my rookie ship configured for mining, spend some time bringing in ore, to work towards an actual missile frigate - slip in a few more kill missions for variety and I'm well on my way to ... somewhere nice
My problem was following the tutorial to rigidly. She may sound sweet, but she lead me straight into the kill missions, without allowing time for a finacial buildup.
Also found I needed a new skill, something I didn't have. Found out that not only can I buy equipment on/in the Market, but skills too. So, bought my Energy Upgrade Shield thingy skill and I'm now training it up to level 2. That should enable to put the right modules in my up and coming missile frigate.
Eagerly waiting for day 4 of my 14 day trial

Good on ya mate. I'll warn you though, sometime soon, when you less expect it you will lose a ship that you simply couldnt really afford to lose. You will be cross/made/angry etc and may even think about quiting the game for sometime or even for good. The point is we have "ALL" had this happen to us and we have all felt the same way as you would but this what makes this game so damn good and you know what? It will happen again the thing that you will learn from this is that 'never fly something you cant afford' obviously this will be ignored cause we have all done it.
Good luck, see you ingame and also check eve forums for tips and hints etc. Remember its just ppls opinions doesnt make the way they play the game the right way it just means that play it a different way.
wait till you get further into the game and stray from missions, flying into low sec space, join a good corp and really learn other aspects of the game
2 things that this game has that i have never seen in an MMO ever
1) real physics in the environmet - from the size of your ship to the guns you use to your flight pattern, just so realistic and so much of it depends on how well you know your ship and how to fly it
2) completely player driver environment - from trading, to mining, to actual warfare (miitary, social, psychological) just makes the game so dynamic and can never be compared to other games i have played
but to be honest 14 days is nowhere near enough time to actually grasp a game this deep. stick it out for 2 months and you will see how good it can get
First off let me say that ive just gotten off trial trying to become member.
Now let me say is you sound like i was on my first few days of my first trial.
I just like to say a few things i learned over my many many trials.
First, EVE is a game ware you can do what ever you want. i completly skimped that mission your on and went on to bigger and better things. im currently in a destroyer killings rats in low sec.
Next thing id like to say is what everyone in the game told me and thats "Get out of the NEWB ship as soon as possible!!!!!1111ZOMG!!!1111
Lastly, Since the revalations patch the EVE devs have made it alot easier for newbs to get on there feet(Read it up on the website) I suggest roleing a complete combat for your first guy. Its makes the game alot easier. I had a destroyer in 2 days.
I think it's day 3 of my 14
I was stocked up on ISK and decided to go for a mission. I had a Kestrel, setup with 4 missile launchers, a shield charger and a couple of energy thingys... and several thousand missiles. Mission was straight forward. Kill pirates until the right pirate was dead, report back and collect my fee.
I goofed. Right out of the warp. I locked on a pirate and said "orbit" him at 20k. Never looked back to see which pirate - the plick new! He went the wrong way and allowed all his friends to move in close and I got creamed! I just never looked. I knew better, too.
So, took my egg back to home base and pulled my Condor out of moth balls. I kept this sucker fully charged and ready to go... cause... like... you never know! Good thing, too.
Went back and killed pirates, for days. Finally got the right guy and the others fled! Between my savings, salvage, insurance and my mission fee - I didn't lose to much. Bought a new Kestrel and then I'll have to resupply it... We'll see that I don't make that same mistake again!!
Another thing - shopping. I got no problem picking up a shuttle and flying 8 jumps for a deal

My dog barks some. Mentally you picture my dog, but I have not told you the type of dog which I have. Perhaps you even picture Toto, from "The Wizard of Oz." But I warn you, my dog is always with me.
Welcome to the game, hopefully you keep enjoying yourself.
Day 4. Things are slowing down. I'm having to go back to work and earn some real ISK. I got my Kestrel and I'm slowing refitting it. But it's gonna take time.
I did take it out on a mission, little confused over what the tactical display showed me, but I kicked pirate booty!! Then went back to shopping. Sometimes, when I buy things, they disappear - I can't tell if I actually paid for an item and it vanished or if the purchase was voided... If I click on the "buy" button on the front page, I never loose my item - but if I go to the Detail tab and click on the buy button... the item doesn't always show up in my "assests".
Also, I wasn't looking and bought 300 missiles from "Region" when I meant "Station" <sigh> so, I just repurchased them locally, ran my mission then went the X jumps to pick them up. It's not like they'll spoil or anything <sigh> <lol>
Note to Nicoli <read with humor> We don't need a new player forum. Newbs want to talk about the game mechanics, how to do this or that... all the experienced players want to talk about is some guy named Bob and how he's impacting the game <evil grin>
Off to earn more ISK. Thanks to Atron and Sire Greywolf, I've almost refitted my Kestrel. Just need 2 more missile racks.

Whats your char name, you seem nice enough and I'm feeling generous.
As for the disappearing assets hmmm.... They were having some issues the other day with transactions had a news item up on it, not sure if you got effected by it or not. Once thing you could check is your transaction tab in your wallet, should be able to at least tell you if you got deducted the money if it's not showing up in your assets window.
Let me know if you ever need some help I have my carrier pilot up in Oichiya just sitting there ATM and I don't have a problem dumping her into a destroyer or frig to help.
