Vanguard is the best MMO I have played in a long long time. Since DAoC I have not had this much fun grinding or exploring, the level of content is staggering. All of you rabid vanguard haters can stop posting in these forums, its making you look stupid. I mean comon if your not gona play the game stop posting about it, or keep trolling here for post scores if it makes you feel more "hardcore". I would much rather play the new hardcore MMO vanguard. I really believe that vanguard may have its bugs, but I have played many MMOs on release or near release and I am yet to find one that didnt need polish. I think vanguard is on the path to MMO greatness. But if it cant pull it off I do have WAR and Pirates of the Burning Sea to look foward to...
If you think being a politician in a mmo is greatness, I feel for you. really. I for one escape the laws and confines of the politcal world when i log into a mmo. Why would I want to reproduce that in which i am escaping? Just straight out one of the worst game concepts ever, and I will bet this has more Brad Butler written all over this, instead of Mcquaid.
Look at the 2 personalities, Mcquaid is energetic , in your face kind of guy and Butler is a dull pencil pusher . Think something happened many years prior that forced this title into the current mmo Political Opera it is now. What good is an adventurer or any other class with out having strong Diplomacy skills. People with all the diplomacy skill rule the entire game. All the action is built around Diplomacy . and I think people who are used to just being a Fighter class will soon learn that there is no real purpose for that class , at all . It is a poor concept, poorly executed title which each time I look at it doesn't even look like the game Mcquaid was promoting.
If I was Mcqauid I would say so long to Sigil , and Hello to Something else which has the ability to create his vision that even I , would greatly enjoy.
He is having fun in the game, just like me and a lot of others too. Why can't you just accept that? Some of us like this game, sure you and a lot of others don't but I do and so does sickdoll. Please go ahead and give constructive criticism of the game, but don't downtalk people(!) that actually happens to like the game. Also your post is not really a criticism of Vanguard just an opinion on diplomacy which I for one don't agree with. I think diplomacy is well executed and fun. I also happen to play a fighter (btw do you mean any class that fights or just like, say warriors?) class and liking that too.
I agree that this is a board for opinions but I get tired of seeing poorly thought out posts complete with impressions from before the game went live. This game is great, that is my opinion, buggy yes, but as a game it is very fun. And it has improved a lot the last month. They have not blown it, to answer that question. But if they had released in half a year or so they would have been a lot more successfull no doubt about that. However, as Brad stated, that was not an option (due to Sigil not having any more money, of course that is their own fault).
Even tho I am not still playing and think they blew it doesn't mean I dont think the game has potential. The question is will it be realized. The concept still sounds awesome. Big world, boats, player cities, easy to get mounts...and on and on. The problem is a major portion of todays gamers are family/working type people that play to relaxe and have fun. Seems to me the grind n group takes a lot of excess time. Time sinks are the last thing I need.
I hope they do go the eqII way and make it more solo friendly. With all the other things the game has/will have that could be something that will draw a lot of people in. If they ever get past the inital bad rep it is getting.
Yes its an opinion forum and I have 2. I like Vanguard. My guild on Thunderaxe is having a blast. Mostly peeps from WOW. Of course all you naysayers say we are lying coz you cant handle it that some are having fun and you cant. Bugs are there yes but not anything thatts gonna make me quit. I have fun exploring and looking at the many things in game that just make me stop and take a screeny. Some people are never gonna like it no matter what happens. Different strokes for different folks. I think the game will survive and go on to have a player base like EQ1 and 2. I hate some of the games out there today but do I troll around on these forums and bad mouth them, Hell no! People make their own decisions weather to play a game or not. I would never use someone elses opinion of a game to try that game.
Oh my second opinion is that Jackdog is an idiot. All he does for a life is troll these forums and flame Vanguard coz he didnt like the Beta. All I can say if anyone makes a decision based on what he has to say will prolly wind up playing these forums. Wished these forums had an ignore feature. If Vanguard is mentioned then you know he will post something and we already know what it will say.
Funny i remember when my guild from EQ1 went to EQ2. All they did was complain about the game coz it wasnt EQ1,soon they all went back to EQ1. I remember how buggy that game was at start up and all the people complaining. Look at it now, its a great game and was my favorite but after awhile its not fun knowing where every mob is and knowing where all the good spots are. I like suspense and Vanguard is giving me that in spades. BTW im solong all the time and just hit lvl 20, I was worried that after hitting 15 I would have to group which I really dont like to do.
Course this wont be read with understanding by the flameboys out there coz theres only one opinion to them and its the only one that counts. Sure am glad that I can make my own decisions.
V:SoH may not have blown it... it has the potential to be an amazing game... SOE blew it for Vangaurd by not pushing back the release date another couple months, which caused a crappy launch. Granted there would still be bugs in the game regardless of the launch date... EQII was the same way at launch and has evolved nicely into a decent game. *shrugs

I disagree with SOE blowing. Sigil had 5 years to get this game ready for release, and they just didn't have what it took to do the job. SOE is a company and they answer to shareholders just like most other companies. They are in it to make a profit, and I have a feeling that if they didn't give Sigil a drop dead date, Brad would still be working on this game three years from now.
Did having to launch early hurt them. Yes, of course it did. Will the game go the way of AC2? I don't think so. It won't put up the numbers it could have, but it won't die, either. I can hear the LotRO fans weeping from here
In response to Deaths comment about Sigil not having what it took. I disagree, to an extent. Their dev team is plenty talented. That wasn't the problem. It was the lack of a strong guiding hand from the team leads and/or upper management that caused the problems. That's the only reason I can see for them scrapping, and redoing whole chunks of the game at the eleventh hour.
There is also that small problem that many game designers, not coders, have of letting their reach exceed their grasp. So often I see a game in development with the designer(s) making these incredulous pie in the sky promises about game features that will just blow your mind, when they don't even have them working yet. A lot of things sound great on paper, but don't work so well in practice. Vanguard failed in this regard.
I do place a bit of blame at the feet of the fans that bought into the "hype", and are now howling with indignation. I could see if they were totally new to the genre, but for veterans? Sorry, just no excuse. The FAQ is not chiseled in stone, and handed down from on high like the Commandments. It's more like a wishlist. One that's completely unrealistic at that. It was that way in UO, and it's been the same in every MMO since. And there's always the same group of people that take it all as gospel, and act shocked and surprised when the devs aren't able to fulfill the designers grandiose promises. Caveat Emptor, and all that.

Might have something to do with the fact that they were targeting the 'core' player from EQ. Whatever the hell a 'core' player is...
Only games I've seen that I would say targeted UO players was, of course, SWG since it was made by Raph, though I don't think they were purposely targeting UO vets. Eve would be the other game, due to it's skill based, sandbox nature. Also not specifically targeted to UO vets, but I could see how they would be drawn there.

I wish Eve wasn't a space game. Outside of Eve and SWG, both of wich are sci-fi, UO vets don't really get many choices. I've been waiting for a game with the openess of UO, and VG is the closest I know of that's set in traditional fantasy. I would have liked VG to let me myself a little "freer" but it's cool.
If they had made ship control in Eve like it is in JtL, they'd have my $14.99 a month until I died, or the servers did. I could live without the ground game, though it would be nice, I suppose.
JTL is the twitch based one isn't it. If it's the game I'm thinking of, it's the space game I"m accually keeping an eye on. I thnk if eve was more twitch based then I could get into it more.
I want a space mmo that plays like wing commander.
Just to stay on topic. What did VG blow? I'm certian I would know if they did blow whatever it is.

JtL is Jump to Lightspeed, the space expansion for SWG. It plays like Wing Commander did. I believe you can use a flight stick if you have one, but I prefer the mouse+keyboard combo.
To my knowledge there's no upcoming space sim style MMO's, which is a huge shame. Wing Commander the MMO would be pretty slick.
But they somehow messed up with the web kids. There is a lot of hate flying around that I really don't understand considering most of the claims by the haters is overblown bs. Every game launch started with bugs and patches. Everquest had a patch a week for years.
Vanguard is very solid considering it just released. Still for some reason or another the webkids have decided to bash it. It's too bad really they are missing out on a cool game. Perhaps they will try it again in a couple months and like it.
Hard to say for sure but I think Vanguard is going to be successful. They don't have to do WoW numbers to make money and they are already off to a good start.

Ah, I got that, not the one I'm thinking of then.
It's a game more along the lines of Eve but twitch based without skills. They have some sort of engine that will dynamically render planets in true scale or something like that. Can't remember the name of the game, but it looked interesting.
