I would just like to add (if someone hasn´t already mentioned it) that Eve Online kind of fits a lot of what people seems to be looking for. I know that the space-scene and the lack of PVE content doesn´t appeal to many players, but if you´re looking for good PVP and real economics (ie crafters/producers/miners); EVE is the way to go.  Just a hint, give it a try if you haven´t already =)

Yep. I'm going back to MUDs. They have had years to balance out the system and tend to get their PvP pretty much as good as you're going to get it in any level/skill type game, along with great options for theft and a highly intense PvP based on a combination of character skills and your own knowledge and strategy.

The good ones also have crafting, housing, building, great economies, meaningful politics, in-depth role-play and good story lines both player and GM driven - in fact everything that anyone could possibly want from an online world, except for the graphics. I don't believe that any of the games listed on this site come anywhere close to delivering the depth of world and the kind of play options you can find in MUDs.
